Ash and Wartortle were training in a forest clearing. The rest of Ash's Pokemon were also out, each one doing their own thing. Primeape and Charmander were locked in a battle, both of them trying their moves out on the other. Bulbasaur was sleeping under the sun, while Pikachu and Gengar were talking about something Ash wasn't sure about.
Wartortle's progress with the Ice Punch move, something Ash was certain the Turtle Pokemon picked up after Hitmonchan used it against him, was going great. Though the move was nowhere near complete, Ash was confident that his Wartortle could master it.
A rustle up in the tree and the sound of something falling drew all their attention from what they were doing. A Pikachu was sprawled on the ground. Ash's Pikachu rushed over to it, but the moment the other Pikachu noticed him, it ran. Pikachu watched dejectedly as the Pokemon rushed off, before giving it chase. Ash recalled his other Pokemon and ran after Pikachu.
It led to Ash finding Pikachu surrounded by other Pikachus, wild ones Ash was certain. The moment they noticed Ash, they all ran away.
It took Ash a while but he finally understood that these Pikachu had never come in contact with a human before, hence why they were afraid of him. So Ash stepped back and allowed his Pikachu to get to know the other Pikachu. He looked happy, which made Ash wonder whether he should leave Pikachu here. A conversation Ash and Pikachu had, and Pikachu insisted that he come along with Ash.
So Ash and Pikachu bid farewell to the wild Pikachu, who had grown warmer to Ash and continued their journey.
After Ash had left the wild Pikachu and dealt with a disturbingly heavy sleeping Snorlax and a town that seemed to be reeling from a clash between Pokemon gangs, Ash ended up in a town hosting a carnival. Excited Ash goes on some rides, eats some carnival food and decides to relax for the day. He then finds himself in front of a tent where a supposed magic show is about to take place. But when he walks inside, all he sees is a depressed man and some eggs.
"Can you tell me when the magic show will begin?" Ash asked the man.
"It's already done and it's flopped!" the man wailed.
Ash, not wanting to get caught up in whatever the man was going through, rushed out. Though he was curious about the egg-like Pokemon the man had with him. So he fished his Pokedex out and tried to find some information on it.
"Exeggcute, the Egg Pokemon. This Pokémon consists of six eggs that form a closely-knit cluster. The six eggs attract each other and spin around. When cracks increasingly appear on the eggs, Exeggcute is close to evolution."
"Huh… They look kinda funny" Ash noted with a smile. "I think I'll catch one for myself."
The best person to ask would be the man who already had one. But Ash did not want to get mixed up with whatever the man was going through, so instead he asked around to see if people knew anything. He found a woman who told him where he could find one and also insulted the man in so many ways that Ash had learned something new from her.
Leaf Forest, or as the locals called it, Exeggutor Forest. The woman had told Ash that he'd find Exeggcute in this Forest and its evolved form as well if he was lucky enough.
Ash was extremely lucky because all that he saw were the evolved Exeggutors.
"Exeggutor, the Coconut Pokemon, evolved form of Exeggcute. Its heads steadily grow larger from exposure to strong sunlight. It is said that when the heads fall off, they group together to form Exeggcute."
"I'll catch one of these so if a head falls off I'll have an Exeggcute too" Ash chuckled.
The only problem was that they were all grouped together like a herd. No doubt if Ash even attempted to catch one the rest would attack him. So Ash walked by them without disturbing them, while at the same time keeping an eye out for any that was not part of a herd.
He'd found one alone, drinking water from a nearby stream.
"You're mine" Ash grinned, calling his Charmander out. Fire types were stronger than Grass types after all.
It was a harsh awakening for the boy when Exeggutor used Confusion and threw Charmander aside.
A part Psychic type, just great.
"We can still win this. Charmander stop it from moving with Fire Spin!"
Charmander's move hit the Pokemon's feet and a tornado of fire formed around it, lowering visibility and movement. Exeggutor threw some kind of exploding balls out of the fire that Charmander easily dodged. Ash commanded for a Flamethrower and it the Pokemon through the Fire Tornado. Exeggutor let out a cry and suddenly the whole forest seemed to become eerily silent. Then Ash heard it.
The sound of stomping feet.
The Exeggutor had called for reinforcement.
Ash picked up Charmander and made a run for it. But he couldn't go far before he was surrounded by the grass-type Pokemon.
A little panicked Ash put Charmander down. But a confident cry from Charmander helped Ash gather himself.
"You're right, we got this" Ash grinned with confidence and ordered Charmander to use Flamethrower.
Charmander spit out a stream of fire at the Exeggutor and the Coconut Pokemon retaliated with those weird ball attacks. But Charmander spun, burning all those attacks easily before hitting the Exeggutor. The Grass-type Pokemon panicked and began to flee from Ash and Charmander. Ash celebrated the victory but Charmander pointed to an Exeggutor that had fallen over and seemed quite damaged. Ash threw a Pokeball quickly. Three shakes later the ball was sent to Oak's Laboratory.
Ash was about to celebrate but his glowing Charmander interrupted him. The fire lizard exploded with light, his form shifting and growing until he stopped glowing and revealed its brand-new evolved form.
"Charmeleon, the Flame Pokemon, evolved form of Charmander. Charmeleon mercilessly destroys its foes using its sharp claws. If it encounters a strong foe, it turns aggressive. In this excited state, the flame at the tip of its tail flares with a bluish-white colour."
In awe, Ash knelt beside it and hugged it. Charmelleon let out a huff before biting his trainer's head playfully.
Ash arrived in a town called Neon Town, where the people were the rudest Ash had ever met. So he didn't stay there long, renting a room at the hotel for the night before leaving the next day.
On his way out of town, he ran into a pink Pokemon, a Jigglypuff according to his Pokedex. The Pokemon seemed to have some kind of throat problem. Ash gave it some Pokemon medicine but it didn't seem to help, so Ash made it a proposition. He can help it by sending it to someone who can help it feel better, but only if it agrees to be caught by Ash.
Jigglypuff took a moment to think before it accepted. So three shakes of the Pokeball later, Jigglypuff was sent to Professor Oak. Ash knew Professor Oak could help it out.
Ash had read about the Grampa Canyon a long time back, about how Fossils were once found here. So he wasn't really surprised when he arrived there and learned that more fossils had been found there. What he was surprised about was finding an old friend.
Brock rushed over when he saw Ash and the two clasped hands and shook firmly.
"I heard from your father that you'd set out on your own journey. I didn't expect to find you here though" Ash said with a grin.
"I heard that fossils could be found here. As a Rock-type specialist, how could I ignore it?" Brock grinned back, before scratching Pikachu behind the ear when he jumped on Brock's shoulder.
Before the two could finish catching up, there was a loud explosion and the sound of rocks tumbling followed it. And after a moment people began to scream.
Ash and Brock rushed to the chaos and to their shock found people being attacked by weird-looking Pokemon.
"Omanyte, the Spiral Pokemon. Omanyte is one of the ancient and long-since-extinct Pokémon that have been regenerated from fossils by people. If attacked by an enemy, it withdraws itself inside its hard shell."
"Omastar, the Spiral Pokemon, evolved form of Omanyte. Omastar uses its tentacles to capture its prey. It is believed to have become extinct because its shell grew too large and heavy, causing its movements to become too slow and ponderous."
"Kabuto, the Shellfish Pokemon. Kabuto is a Pokémon that has been regenerated from a fossil. However, in extremely rare cases, living examples have been discovered. The Pokémon has not changed at all for 300 million years."
"Kabutops, the Shellfish Pokemon, evolved form of Kabuto. Kabutops swam underwater to hunt for their prey in ancient times. The Pokémon was apparently evolving from being a water-dweller to living on land as evident from the beginnings of change in its gills and legs."
"None of them looks like they've been revived from fossils" Ash noted seeing the Pokemon going on a rampage.
"Maybe they were forced into hibernation underground for some reason and the explosion woke them up" Brock muttered, "we can think of the reason later Ash, we need to stop their rampage!"
Ash nodded and sent all of his Pokemon out, Brock doing the same. The duo and their combined nine Pokemon fought against the rampaging Ancient Pokemon, ten in number. They were able to take them down, Brock capturing one of each kind of Fossil Pokemon in the process while Ash caught himself an Omanyte and Kabuto.
"That should be the last one" Brock declared as one of the archaeologists caught the final Pokemon, an Omastar.
"Where do your Pokemon go when you have six already? Like mine go to Professor Oak, what about yours?"
"Back at the Pewter City Gym. Which reminds me!" Brock rushed off to a digital phone and came back after a while. "Kabutops is still too wild. I don't want to put my siblings in danger" Brock smiled.
"I wonder what woke them up" Ash said, looking at the closed-in hole the Pokemon had climbed out of.
The earth shook and the hole exploded once again. Ash and Brock took cover to avoid the stones and rocks that had been sent into the sky. When things settled and they walked out, the reason was plain before them.
A giant machine had come out from the hole, black and with a giant 'R' on the side. And as luck would have it, someone Ash despised walked out of it.
"So we meet again" Damien said with a condescending smirk.
"Friend of yours?" Brock asked sternly.
Ash explained who Damien was, who he had been and what he'd become. Brock was disgusted, especially about the part where it abandoned two Charmanders that were now under Ash's care.
"Weak Pokemon do not deserve a place in my team" Damien said with a shrug. "You should agree Brock, you told me how weak my Charmander was."
A vein popped up on Brock's forehead.
"I never told you that!" he spat.
Damien grinned, calling his Rhydon and Primeape out.
"Enough talk, I will have your Pokemon Ash. Especially my Charmander. You can have the weaker one."
As if hearing Damien, Charmeleon popped out and snarled at Damien.
The Team Rocket member grinned wider.
"You've evolved! You just keep getting better."
With a laugh, Damien brought out another Pokeball.
"This one right here, I'll use this to bring you where you belong!"
The Pokemon popped out from the Pokeball and let out a roar.
"Aerodactyl, the Fossil Pokemon. Aerodactyl are ferocious, prehistoric Pokémon that go for the enemy's throat with their serrated, sawlike fangs."
"I just caught this beauty! The strongest of the Fossil Pokemon that woke up because of our digging around."
"So it was you!" Ash exclaimed and Damien pinned an unimpressed look.
"Aerodactyl! Bring me my Charmeleon!" Damien commanded.
Aerodactyl flew at deadly speed at Charmeleon, easily dodging Flamethrower after Flamethrower.
Ash sent out Gengar and Wartortle and Gengar to help Brock with the Rhydon and Primeape, while the other collected trainers and archaeologists took to arms against the other grunts that came with Damien.
"What's wrong, Charmeleon? Is this the best you can be?" Damien taunted, "Aerodactyle! Wing Attack!"
The attack hit Charmeleon clean and sent him flying through a rock.
"I'm disappointed! Aerodactyl Wing Attack again!"
"Charmeleon, Fire Spin!"
Charmeleon's fire spin was dodged easily as Aerodactyl manoeuvred around it and landed another critical Wing Attack.
"See how powerful it is? The King of The Skies!" Damien laughed like a maniac. "I finally have a powerful Pokemon! I don't even need you anymore if I think about it. Yeah! I don't need you! Aerodactyle! Bite its limbs off!"
Aerodactyl came rushing in, but Ash jumped in at the last moment and tumbled with Charmeleon out of the way.
"We are outmatched" Ash whispered to his injured Charmeleon. "Come back to your Pokeball before you get hurt worse."
But Charmeleon refused it, fighting out of Ash's grip to stand before Aerodactyl, the flame on his tail glowing bluish-white. He looked back at Ash and nodded.
"Charmeleon…"
Charmeleon let out a soft cry.
"Alright," Ash said with determination. "We're fighting this to the end."
Damien laughed, loud, cold and cruel.
"Oh Ash, you and your softness for weak Pokemon. I will be the end of you and Charmeleon" the boy sneered. "Aerodactyl, finish the eyesores off."
Aerodactyl dived forward, coming at Charmeleon at great speed.
"Wait!" Ash ordered and Charmeleon looked back. "Wait" Ash repeated and Charmeleon nodded.
Trainer and Pokemon waited as Aerodactyl closed in. When it was too close to dodge, Charmeleon unleashed a stream of fire right into Aerodactyl's open maw. The Fossil Pokemon let out a pained cry before flying away and coming back with a ferocious Wing Attack.
Charmeleon grabbed it, digging his feet in to absorb the move.
"You can do this Charmeleon" Ash encouraged, while Damien laughed and threw more insults Ash's and Charmeleon's way. Charmeleon grits his teeth, finding it harder to keep this up. But Ash was supporting him, Ash who had taken him in when Damien threw him out to die, Ash who'd cared for him all this time and loved him like family. If Charmeleon gave up now, both he and Ash were done for.
And worse, Damien would win.
Charmeleon's mouth flamed and Charmeleon let out a roar. His form began to glow bright, size increasing, wings forming and tail fire growing brighter.
Charizard stood there with a savage look in his eyes and Aerodactyl's wing in his hands. Immediately he took to the skies, gripping Aerodactyl's wing hard. He spun the Fossil Pokemon in the air before throwing it to the ground. Before Aerodactyl could right itself Charizard let loose a blast of fire that took on the shape of the fire symbol and sent Aerodactyl crashing hard into the ground before detonating into a great blaze.
Damien watched in shock before he was laughing again.
"You keep exceeding my expectations, Charizard! You really are the strongest of my Pokemon!"
IN reply Charizard shot a blast of fire at Damien.
Damien jumped out of the way and the fire impacted with the machine Team Rocket had appeared in, making it explode.
"Nowhere to escape now, Damien" Ash declared. Rhydon and Primeape were defeated as well.
Damien called all his Pokemon back with a smirk. His bag pack grew out into a jetpack and he took to the skies.
"One day… One day I will have you back Charizard" Damien declared, clutching a sack in his hands that Ash had not noticed before and took to the skies. Charizard went to give chase but landed on the ground exhausted.
"You did well" Ash complimented. Charizard smirked before passing out.
Ash delayed leaving the Grampa Canyon until his Charizard fully recovered and he could finish giving the police his statement about Team Rocket. The grunts that had come with Damien were all apprehended, meaning only Damien had gotten away.
As Ash was leaving, Brock approached him with a request that Ash was all too happy to accept.
And so Ash set out towards his next Gym, a new companion in Brock now with him.
