This chapter, and this story as a whole, is dedicated to the little boy who still lives within me; the little boy I'm still attempting to love.
Author's Notes: Well, one visit to the hospital later, and I've returned. Thankfully, exams are also finished, so I should be able to, in theory, write more in these few weeks to months before going off to law school. In any case, I'll do my best to keep up with uploading, even if life is quite hectic. Regardless, some things are out of my hands, so I suppose it is best to get on with it. However, do take note that this chapter will be a long one.
Also, since someone asked in PM, I'll state any sources I've used to write, well, anything in general.
1) Modern Man in Search of A Soul, and Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious - both by Carl Jung
2) Trauma and Recovery - Judith Herman
3) The Body Keeps The Score - Bessel Van Der Kulk
Harem(Not in Order of Appearance): Fem!Sasuke(Satsuki), Fem!Haku, Anko, Koyuki, Yugito, Ryuuzetsu, Fuu, Guren
Review Responses
atengawchok: That was meant to be Sakura's mother, Mebuki(filler), apologies if it wasn't clear. I doubt either Sakura or Ino will be in the harem though, I suck at writing both.
Midnight Lost: Well, that is still in the cards, just not sure she's that thrilled with the idea that her only friend is fated to go around slaughtering people.
freedomringer: Well, I've got some things planned for Haku's section of the story, it's all just a matter of me managing to implement them properly. And, a small spoiler here, Satsuki will be butting heads with Jashin throughout.
Animeharem: I likely won't have them become Hanyou, but I'll consider those two suggestions for the harem. (Update: Okay, going with Guren.)
HouseofErebus: There isn't much regarding Jashin lore, so a lot of it is mostly the author's headcanon alone. I'm mainly mixing in what was given in the manga and the anime, whilst also using parts from Japanese and other mythologies.

Alright, enough of me yapping on, let's conclude this short prologue.
-Two Years Later-
Standing silently under a slowly dimming sky, Naruto faced forward, facing the many headstones within the cemetery with a blank expression. The blond looked ahead, eyes narrowing at the headstone that belonged to one Uzumaki Kushina, specifically at the first part of the epitaph that read: "Family before Duty; Loyalty before Glory", with the other parts being obscured by years of age and memories.
"You promised..." A voice whispered, seemingly exclusive to Naruto's hearing alone. "That man murdered us... Two years ago..." Another continued, as the blond shook his head. "Kill him, kill him, kill him, kill him..."
'Be quiet,' Naruto thought in response, only for the voices to continue.
"It's far, far too hot here... Won't you join us?" A fourth voice began to say, only to be cut out by the third voice soon after. "Liar, liar, liar, liar-"
"Naruto," A familiar voice cut in, pulling the blond away from the silent moment as he turned over to the source of the voice.
"Hmm? Oh, sorry, I didn't realise... Nevermind..." Naruto explained, looking upwards slowly and coming face-to-face with Satsuki moments after, the latter's eyes reddened with fresh tears still slipping down her cheeks.
"It's alright," Satsuki assured, sighing as she stepped over to look over Naruto's shoulder, wiping some tears whilst out of view. "Thank you for accompanying me here... Were you...?"
"Yeah, well, kinda, I don't know anyone here..." Naruto continued, looking back at Kushina's tomb moments later.
"Well, what of her, then?" Satsuki asked, gesturing towards the very same grave. "What do you... Hmm... What do you deem her soul?"
"... I wouldn't know, it's... It's hard to declare someone's soul as... Well, whatever it is," Naruto stated, turning around moments later. "Shall we leave?"
"Alright, we can," Satsuki began to say, walking away as she did, "It'd be better if I don't spend that much more time here, anyhow."
The two began to walk away, the falling sun slowly vanishing into the mountains behind them, as a near-completely wilted Higanbana sitting at the foot of Kushina's grave swayed gently in the wind, at times seeming to be on the verge of being lifted off its spot, but ultimately staying still moments after the gust's departure.
"I'd say her soul was pure."
-One Hour Later-
Naruto slid back on the tatami mat, right knee and left foot grinding his backward traverse to a halt, as sweat dripped unperturbed down his brow and onto the ground. Propping his hands on the mat, Naruto panted heavily, tilting his head upwards and staring ahead as Satsuki planted her foot on the ground again, the fabric of her robes waving before coming to a halt alongside her movements.
'He's gotten better, yet...' Satsuki thought to herself, still holding her guard as she stared ahead for a moment, before dropping it and stepping over to offer a hand. "Well played, I suppose... Your strategy was sound."
"Was it? Well, I thought you put me down easily," He explained, slowly reaching up and accepting her hand, "As per usual."
"That... I suppose that's less to do with strategy..." She admitted slowly, ensuring he was alright before taking a few steps back. "Still, you've gotten better."
"Thanks, I guess I did," Naruto mumbled, standing back up as he stretched for a moment, before straightening soon after. "... It's almost time."
"... I suppose it is. I assume your mind is made?" Satsuki asked, turning towards the blond, the latter now donning a dark robe with a hood, his face obscured by that of a white fox mask.
"Yes, it has," Naruto stated, stepping over before lifting his mask slightly. "I..."
"Save your tongue for your return, Naruto," Satsuki chided, shaking her head as she reached into her robe, retrieving a Higanbana before passing it over to Naruto. "Just... Promise me that you'll return, alright?"
"... I promise, I'll be back before the sun rises," Naruto assured, moving towards the bloodstained doors, opening them before walking out moments after, the silent swirl of the wind breaking the silence Satsuki was left in.
"You'd better," She muttered under her breath, turning on her heel after shutting the door to her home.
-Twenty Minutes Later-
"That one... That one killed us..." A voice stated as Naruto shook his head, his feet carrying him across rooftops and towards the outskirts of Konoha; towards a dilapidated district that contrasted the developed one before it; towards the lawless slums and the heart of its criminality.
'Wait, hold on...' Naruto argued in his head, leaping across rooftops and doing his best to remain stable.
"Youuuu... Musn't let him run..." Another voice continued, ignoring Naruto's request before another overtook it soon after. "Please... Avenge us. Condemn him..."
'I've not arrived yet, please, hold on...' Naruto began to say in his head, only for other voices to speak their piece.
"Don't be afraid, reaper..." One voice stated before another continued. "That woman... She said you'll free us..." The voice muttered before a voice from earlier began to speak again. "Coward, coward, coward, coward-"
'I said hold on!' Naruto demanded internally, stopping in his tracks momentarily atop the roof of a large building within the run-down district, itself situated in front of the intended building. 'How do I even start...'
Shaking his head lightly, the blond stared at the streets below, eyes narrowing as several hooded figures leapt down from other buildings. Seemingly unaware of Naruto's presence, the several figures looked around momentarily, before ducking into the building next to the one Naruto had been perched atop.
"They... They are of the same cloth as the one who killed us..." A voice began to whisper once again, as Naruto rose to his feet, whilst another voice also began to speak. "Not of here... Of the north..." The voice explained before a third voice began speaking again soon after. "Bringers of Sound..."
'Of the same cloth... Of the north... Bringers of Sound...?' Naruto thought to himself, rubbing the sides of his head whilst readjusting his mask slightly to allow himself more room to breathe. 'What are they talking about... Sound... Sound... Oto? Can't be, why would they...'
"Why, hello there," An unfamiliar voice suddenly stated from behind Naruto, startling and prompting the blond to turn towards the source of the voice soon after and come face to face with a bemused smirk, framed by long strands of light blue hair. "Quite late now, don't you think?"
Not being given much time to react, Naruto soon found the shinobi's foot planted upon his chest, launching him off the rooftop and onto the ground below, wincing in pain as he slowly stumbled back to his feet.
"Ugh... What...?" Naruto mumbled, looking around before holding up his right hand, successfully blocking a roundhouse kick launched by the stranger. "Who...?"
"Oh, you'll be great fun," She stated with a smirk, pushing further against Naruto's wrist, before using the leverage to launch herself forward, planting her left foot into his face, shattering part of his mask whilst forcing him back. "Try not to make this too easy now... Alright?"
"Fight back... Fight back..." A voice began to whisper again, as Naruto slowly got up to his feet again, giving way for a second to speak. "Don't let her... End your promise... Fulfill..."
'Tch... I will! Shut up!' Naruto thought back, shaking his head fervently.
Watching as his adversary began performing several hand seals, Naruto took a step back, reaching into his robes before withdrawing a strange wooden shaft about the length of his forearm, holding it by what resembled a handle, the weapon's most defining feature being its hooked tine.
Tilting his head slightly, the blond ducked back, holding up his jitte as the girl dashed over and swung upwards with a curved crystalline blade attached to her wrist. Not waiting any longer, Naruto repositioned, catching the blade by his weapon's hook before twisting it by the handle, locking her in place before he glared directly at her through the eye holes in his mask.
"I... I come only for the one inside," Naruto began to say, voice starting shaky but seeming to find its resolve as he went on. "I wish not to fight you, just-"
"Well, that's too bad, I've been itching for a fight," The girl stated, a mirroring crystalline blade emerging from her free hand. "Now... Try not to scream."
Not giving Naruto any further time to react, the girl jabbed forward with her free hand, plunging the tip of the blade into Naruto's exposed stomach and causing him to wince in pain, as blood slowly seeped from the wound, flowing down the blade's edge before dripping onto the ground they stood on.
'No reasoning with her at this point...' He thought to himself, panting for a moment.
"You don't fool me, you realise? Hide behind a mask, wear a robe, yet... Beneath that, I know what I face," The girl mocked, twisting the blade and forcing a gasp from Naruto's exposed mouth. "A coward who wouldn't dare try this without a disguise."
'No other choice...' Naruto pondered, holding up two fingers, before fading into his own shadow.
"What the..." The girl mumbled, looking around in confusion at her vanishing opponent. "Where'd you go? That scared of me, are you?"
"Ignore her... Run..." A voice began to say in the blond's head as he slowly reconstituted himself behind the girl, moments before a second voice spoke up. "Bypass her... Go... Kill him..." The voice stated before a third continued. "Go in... Kill him... Avenge us!"
'Be... Quiet,' Naruto thought, slowly forming several practised hand seals. 'Can't just walk around her... That won't work, gotta make her move.'
Reappearing behind the girl, Naruto tapped her on the shoulder, not giving her time to react past that before launching a swift kick to her back, launching her forward and drawing a growl from his adversary.
"So that's how it is," The girl grumbled, blades on both hands primed and ready, as Naruto glared ahead through his mask. "Have it your way, then. It's your funeral."
'Taking a cue from you, Satsuki... I will return... I promised, after all...' Naruto thought, finishing his seals before sucking up large amounts of air. "Katon: Gokakyu no Jutsu!"
Placing two fingers by his mouth, the blond exhaled a large ball of fire through his exposed lips, causing it to slam into the girl and forcing out a pained shriek as it soon dissipated, causing her to fall to her knees with her robes slightly charred.
"Guren!" A voice called out, prompting Naruto to spin around as five shinobi, also of the sound, burst out of the room they had prior entered. "Who are you?! Speak!"
"Again... I come for the one inside, and not you," Naruto stated, stepping backwards and into the empty road's centre. "Step aside... Please."
"Nice try, boy," Another one of the shinobi stated, as the five began to withdraw a series of different weaponry.
"You've just attacked one of us, what makes you think we'll let you out alive?" A third asked, drawing a ninjato and stepping closer as he did so, whilst a fourth ran over to Guren's side to help her up.
"No, I want him alive," Guren stated, causing a momentary pause as several of the Sound Shinobi turned towards her.
"What? But Master-" One began to say, only to be cut off by a sudden glare from the azure-haired girl.
"Master will understand, you think he wouldn't want him either?" Guren asked, eyes narrowing as she took several steps back. "Quickly, before he gets away... I'll get some things sorted with our... Compatriot, first."
As Guren's figure slowly vanished through the door the five shinobi had exited moments earlier, Naruto looked around, holding up his guard as his eyes noticeably narrowed through the eye holes of his damaged mask.
'Might have no other choice here...' Naruto thought, looking around as he reached into his robe, finding nothing but a lone nekote that he had experimented with days prior. 'Would have to do, I suppose.'
Not being allowed much more time to consider, the blond slipped on the clawed glove upon his right hand whilst leaping upwards, dodging an attempted slash by the shinobi with the sword, only to be met with a barrage of shuriken from another, one plunging into his shoulder upon his descent.
'That one guy has a sword, the other projectiles...' Naruto analysed, doing his best with the amount of time he had been given as he looked up, lifting his arm and blocking a kick from a third shinobi, only to be met with a swift punch from behind. 'Tch... That's four... The fifth...'
Tilting his head, Naruto flicked his elbow upwards, slamming it into a shinobi's wrist and forcing the dropping of a kunai, moments before the blond flicked his arm back, spinning for a moment before launching his foot into the shinobi's chest, sending him flying into the wall of a building. Seeming to gain a second wind, Naruto swiftly spun back, ducking under an attempted slash before retaliating by clawing forward, hitting his target and leaving four deep cuts upon the shinobi's chest.
"Don't waste time... Go..." A voice began to whisper once again before another spoke up. "Kill... Him... Don't let him escape..."
'Shut up...' Naruto growled inwardly, the temporary distraction proving sufficient as a kunai dug itself deep into his leg, forcing out a pained and surprised yelp, and causing him to fall onto a knee.
"Liar, liar, liar, liar..." A voice began to say again, only for Naruto to cut it off immediately after it started.
"I said shut up!' Naruto yelled inwardly.
Placing a head upon his temple, Naruto ducked back, then to the left, then backwards once again, dodging slash after slash from the injured shinobi, only to be kicked in the back once again, sending him face-first onto the cobblestone below.
"If you knew what's good for you, you'd yield," The sword-bearing shinobi stated, bringing his blade next to the blond's neck as Naruto slowly attempted to wobble back onto his knees, at least to an upright position. "You can't win."
"Had it not been for Guren's mercy, your head would be on the ground now," Another stated, walking over before reaching for some rope within his pockets. "Who knows how long she'll maintain this mercy... But I wouldn't push your luck."
"I... Would, honestly... But..." Naruto began to say, reaching downwards and pulling out the kunai from his leg, before flinging it at the lone lantern illuminating the battlegrounds, plunging the street into darkness. "I've already made a promise."
"Where'd he go?!" The sword-bearing shinobi questioned, swinging blindly as Naruto limped several steps back.
"He couldn't have gone far! For Kami's sake, can one of you idiots light a match!" Another shinobi yelled out in the darkness.
In the centre of the street again, Naruto fell to his knees, pulling out the shuriken from his shoulder before tossing it aside. Panting for a moment, the blond reached upwards, tugging on his mask before slipping it under his robes, placing both hands together moments after.
'Got no other choice,' Naruto thought, wincing in pain as he flicked through several hand seals, whilst multiple voices began to speak once again.
"Kill them, kill them all..." A voice egged on, another joining in soon after. "Kill them, and then the one that killed us..." Whilst another voice seemed to have another idea. "Fail... Die... Join us... Await the next..."
"... Grand... Almighty Jashin, heed my word..." Naruto began to say in a raspy voice, licking some blood from his lips and swallowing it moments after, incantations and markings appearing upon his exposed skin as he did so. "Bear witness, as I show you, the will of your devoted... The power of your emissary... The strength of your creation."
"There!" A shinobi called out, lighting a match as Naruto stood back to his feet, a faceful of rage coming to be illuminated in the light. "Kami..."
His shadow long and monstrous, Naruto dashed forward, staying mostly silent as he flung a wild yet swift punch at the first shinobi, sending teeth flying onto the cobblestone grounds before the match followed suit. Not relenting by any margin, the blond slammed his foot into the right knee of the shinobi, eliciting a pained scream before crumbling to the ground, only for the blond to follow his descent, screams soon being cut out by rampant and brutal punches.
"What did you..." The sword-bearing shinobi questioned, prompting the blond to look upwards, incantations and markings emerging upon his face as he soon broke an unnaturally wide grin. "Just like those heretics..."
Seeming eager to not allow his opponent any further time to react, Naruto dashed forwards, scampering forwards in a foxlike manner before launching upwards, using his hands as if they were a springboard, launching forwards and slamming both feet into the shinobi's chin, staggering him temporarily. Not seeming willing to let up either, the blond dashed forward at his still-recovering opponent, slashing over and over with the nekote upon his right hand, before flicking his right leg upwards, slamming it against the shinobi's face and sending him to the ground in a pool of blood.
Watching their comrades fall, the three remaining shinobi looked between one another, before charging at Naruto in unison. Smirking in response, the blond dashed forward in return, parrying and countering attack after attack, dodging and weaving between kunai and shuriken, only to be caught in the midst by a punch that connected directly with his jaw.
"You... You will pay..." The shinobi sputtered, eyes widening as his hand remained in place. "No way..."
Undeterred, the blond flashed a small smirk, blue pupils shifting slightly to ones of deep lilac, as he slowly tilted his face back towards the shinobi. Moving swiftly, the blond launched his elbow directly at the man's jaw, knocking him back slightly, only for the attack to be followed up by a chain of rapid punches to the shinobi's chest, each growing heavier and heavier, the last drawing blood before the blond pulled back.
"Please... M-mercy..." The shinobi stammered, attempting to move his hands upwards.
The blond smirked, lifting his right hand before slashing forth, stealing the man's vision and plunging him into darkness, moments before launching his foot into the man's throat, sending him onto the ground moments after. Panting slightly, the blond turned towards the two remaining, frightened shinobi, licking his lips as shadows coalesced, a large scythe soon finding itself within his hand, before he slowly walked towards the two petrified shinobi.
-Uchiha Complex-
Seated silently within her room, Satsuki reached forward, lighting another candle before staring at the largely empty piece of paper on her table.
'He's still not back...' Satsuki thought with a sigh, tilting her head as she came face-to-face with the small vase of Higanbana flowers placed on her desk, ones identical to the one she had parted with hours earlier. 'Perhaps... No, he...'
Rising swiftly to her feet, Satsuki stepped out of her room, and out into the mostly abandoned hallway of her home, layer after layer of dust caking each step as she wandered back and forth, her hands placed together as she came up to the window.
'He'll be back, Satsuki, he'll be back... Naruto...' She thought, coming to a stop as she leaned against a dusty wall, facing the bloodstained front door of her home once again. 'He promised... He'll be back...'
The raven-haired girl slowly slid onto a seated position, still leaning against the wall as she looked down into her hands.
"Please be safe... Please... Don't leave me too..." Satsuki whispered, letting a tear slip unrestrained down her cheek, her last few words sounding, even to herself, as gibberish. "I..."
-Naruto, Ten Minutes Later-
Naruto stepped forward, slamming his fist into the final shinobi over and over, moments before the purple hue in his eyes lightened back to blue, his shadow shrinking back to normal as he slowly rose to his feet.
"Not bad," Guren stated, stepping up behind the blond as the latter looked around, eyes widening as he did so. "Oh, don't look so shocked. It's not like they were worth much to begin with, anyhow."
Naruto remained silent, staring head with a blank expression as Guren walked over to the downed shinobi, crouching down before placing a hand upon a neck.
"Oh, good, and they survived," Guren stated, standing back up as she held up her hands, translucent crystals forming around the bodies before each shrunk into the ground. "Now... What to do with you?"
The azure-haired girl stepped forward, as Naruto took several steps back, reaching into his robe and retrieving his barely intact mask, gingerly placing it over his face once again.
"I suppose we'll both be quiet about this, yes?" Guren asked, continuing without awaiting a response. "Much as this has been fun, I am rather busy. Let's hope that, the next time we meet, your first instinct is not to hide behind a mask. Take the rat, we have no further need for him."
The azure-haired girl smirked, stepping back before leaping atop a rooftop, glancing back at Naruto once more as she did so.
"But I do warn you, do not meddle against us again," Guren stated, leaping off moments after. "You have no idea the powers you stand against."
"Ignore her... Go on..." A voice began to say in Naruto's head, seeming to urge the blond on as another spoke as well. "Kill him... The murderer... He took our lives... Take his... Free us..."
Taking a silent breath, the blond slowly stepped forward, finding the right door before kicking it down, coming face-to-face with a wounded shinobi moments after, one with the headband of Konoha presented proudly upon his head.
"You..." The shinobi coughed up, trying in vain to move as the blond stepped forward, a hand swiftly wrapping around the man's throat soon after.
"You have sinned," Naruto stated, his tone blank as shadows slowly moved up his hand.
"Who... Are you..." The shinobi began to say, only to be thrown onto the table once again, the structure shattering and sending him plummeting to the ground.
"It matters... Little, who I am," Naruto stated, eyes slowly shifting away as several shadows took form next to him, one of a woman in her middle age, one of a boy around Naruto's age, and one of a girl whose height seemed to suggest she was barely a toddler. "See something familiar?"
The shinobi's eyes widened at the sight of the shadows, tears slowly slipping down his cheeks as he slowly inched back, holding his face in his hands as he repeatedly muttered a single phrase. "Can't be, can't be..."
"It very much can," Naruto asserted, shadows wrapping around the man's arms and legs and forcing him to face his masked opposite. "Now... Say. It. What have you done?"
"... It happened last year. I... You know, I was struggling. Missions didn't pay much, it was all, well, hopeless," The shinobi began to confess, tears slowly streaming down his cheeks. "Those... Weird Shinobi approached, asking me about maps, schedules, and other things. They offered me a lot, and, well, I... Couldn't refuse..."
The blond stepped forward, sharpened claws from his glove slowly digging into the man's side, elicitating a pained groan as he did so.
"To the point," Naruto ordered, shadow growing larger as several incantations began spreading upon the parts of skin that had been exposed. "Before I pass judgment."
The man slowly looked up at the frightening figure before him, acquiescing to the demand immediately after.
"O-one day... We met at an alley, and... A woman saw us," The man continued, the shadow of the woman next to Naruto growing larger as a result. "I... She had her kids, one boy, one girl... And... They... They said to kill them. All of them, I... I had to-"
"... For your crimes against these souls... I deem yours to be corrupt," Naruto stated, stepping back as a large scythe of shadows formed within his left hand.
"N-no! Please!" The man sputtered, only to be ignored as Naruto lifted his scythe.
"With word of the Almighty Jashin... Heed my word as I say," Naruto continued, before slamming the blade downwards through the man, causing his physical form to fade completely into dust. "That I sentence your corrupt soul to an eternity of damnation."
The deed completed, Naruto stepped back, scythe vanishing as he fell to his knees, mask slipping off his face as he held it in his hands, only for the several shadows in the room to envelop him, hugging him gently before speaking again.
"Thank you... Thank you, reaper..." A voice began to say within his head once again, with the voice this time sounding feminine, as it slowly began to fade away into nothingness. "Thank you for freeing our souls."
-Uchiha Complex, Half an Hour Later-
'That's it, I need to go look for him,' Satsuki thought to herself, looking over at the slowly lowering moon at the window momentarily, before rushing for the door, only for it to fling open moments after. 'I-'
Slowly looking up, Satsuki soon came face-to-face with a familiar mask, one she swiftly knocked off to reveal the face of Naruto moments after. Not wasting a moment, Satsuki took a step forward, before wrapping her arms tightly around the blond.
"Satsuki, I..." Naruto began to say, unsure of what to do as he slowly wrapped his arms around in return.
"Be quiet, idiot... You..." Satsuki began to say, tearing up nearly immediately as she rested her chin on his shoulder. "Don't... Don't you dare worry me like that... Again..."
"... I won't," Naruto assured, pulling away as Satsuki did, whilst turning to face the bloodstained door he had entered through. "... I promise, I won't do that, ever again."
Author's Notes 2: About the chapter... I suppose you're owed an explanation. I will preface that I do not seek any sympathy by sharing this, and will do so regardless. On Thursday, 23rd May, I was sent to the hospital's intensive care unit as a result of a medical emergency that was diagnosed as Paracetamol Poisoning. Whilst I may have been too afraid to share beforehand, I suppose I won't get better without daring to face it. My grandfather, who had essentially raised me in place of a father figure in my life, passed away on the 3rd of May this year. Hard to describe as it is... Everything felt, dark, from then on. On the 22nd, I... Have no clue what took over my brain, but I took several pills I found in my drawer and would black out soon after, before my roommate would find me.
As silly as it may sound, words cannot describe how alone I felt in those moments, and words still cannot describe how alone I still feel, even after having woken up and being told that I would survive it without issue. Regardless, even if I cannot describe it very well, do seek help if you feel similar thoughts. There will always be someone willing to listen if you are willing to try.
I also apologise if the second half to this chapter proves inferior. Originally, I had planned for it to be out by the 20th, but I had left it unfinished before the whole fiasco described above. As I write this now, I will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow, so I can hopefully withdraw the chapter if need be. Thank you for your patience, I love you all and will forever be grateful.
Regardless of which, do tell me what you guys thought about this chapter in the reviews down below! I'm always eager to see what you guys have to say!
