The day had begun in the usual way for the special agents of the FBI's BAU division. A body had been discovered in an alleyway, bearing strange symbols on their skin. This was where it got complicated. These symbols were not recorded anywhere. Garcia hadn't been able to get anything out of them, and the whole investigation was at a standstill.
A few days later, Aaron Hotchner had news and introduced it to the unit.
"Good morning, everyone. In view of the... specificity of this case, the FBI has put us in touch with a team of specialists who will work with us until the investigation is resolved," Aaron Hotchner told his team that morning. "I haven't met them myself yet, and their department is so secretive that we have no information about them."
His gaze was then drawn to Penelope Garcia, who was beginning to open her mouth.
"If you manage to find some unknown elements for me, I'll be forever grateful."
Garcia took this as a challenge and nodded, already beginning to draw up a precise plan on how to find such hidden data. Spencer caught a glimpse of Derek's amused look before he answered.
"When are they coming?
- We're here," replied a voice coming from a man who would surely go unnoticed in a crowd. The man was quite small in stature, looked to be no more than 30 years old, and had black, unkempt hair. The only thing peculiar about him was his uncommon emerald-green eyes.
He was accompanied by two others, a tall redhead with piercing blue eyes who seemed to defy anyone he came across, and who appeared to be about the same age, as well as an older man, bald and dark-skinned.
"Pleased to meet you, gentlemen, I'm Aaron Hotchner, FBI special agent and head of the BAU unit whose members are David Rossi, Derek Morgan, Emily Prentiss, Penelope Garcia, Spencer Reid and Jennifer Jareau" With each name, they nodded or stepped forward to introduce themselves.
The man who had already spoken replied.
"Likewise, I'd like you to meet agents Ronald Weasley and Kingsley Shacklebolt. As for me, I'm Harry Potter." He spoke clearly and seemed quite sure of himself. Spencer was surprised that he seemed to be in charge of the team. He'd have put his money on the older man. Although Hotchner wasn't the oldest member of the team either, and yet he was in charge. "Since we're going to be working together over the next few days," he resumed, "we'd like to have a quick update on what you've been able to observe and learn since the body was discovered."
Spencer exchanged glances with his team members before JJ stepped forward and presented the elements.
"To tell the truth, we don't have much. We know she's between 25 and 28, and has been working as a waitress for 2 months in the neighborhood where we discovered her. She has no background, no family living nearby, and her colleagues don't know much about her.
- What surprised us," resumed Emily, "were the symbols that covered his body. We didn't find any matches in our databases. She appears to have been killed as a result of severe blood loss, caused by multiple fine cuts on her skin. No weapon was found."
Spencer watched as the three men of the special team exchanged mutual glances and nodded their heads. They seemed to be talking to each other without uttering a word.
"What we are about to reveal to you must be kept secret and nothing must leave this room, is that understood?" Said the black man.
To the reserved nod he received, Agent Shacklebolt continued.
"I might as well get straight to the heart of the matter: magic exists. All three of us are wizards from England and this murder was perpetrated by wizards against a Muggle or a Squib, that's yet to be determined."
No one spoke any more, and even a fly was heard flying. Then Spencer spoke up.
"What is a Muggle or a Squib?
- You're throwing everything away far too quickly, Kings," said the redhead, who hadn't said anything until now. "They're people with no magical powers, like you. However, a Squib is someone who was born into a wizarding family and is therefore familiar with the world of magic, unlike a Muggle who is normally ignorant of this world.
- I see. And we have to believe you, because…?"
The dark-haired Harry Potter, if he remembered correctly, smirked at him. Was he amused by his question, or did he appreciate the beginning of his repartee? He came forward in turn.
"We know it's hard to believe. That's why we've asked permission to show you some magic, just to prove it to you. Expecto patronum!"
To the amazement of the whole team, some kind of animal emerged in the form of blue smoke and began to gambol around them. It was a majestic stag. Everyone was stunned.
"The cuts on the victim's body were caused by a spell called Sectumsempra. Few people are familiar with it, since it's an invention that hasn't been made public. This allows us to narrow down the list of suspects, but that doesn't mean it's going to be easy.
They are members of an organization of evil wizards, part of a former terrorist group that attacked magical England a few years ago. Although their... leader was killed, some of them managed to escape our radar.
As for the symbols you've discovered, they seem to be mostly runes, and this is the symbol of that particular organization. However, I'm not a specialist in runes, although we can send it to our contact who will be able to explain the meaning of these elements together."
After which, this little meeting came to an end, but all the BAU members had their heads full of questions about this hidden world. What was the magical world? How had they never heard of it before?
The investigation was finally solved in record time, thanks to the benevolent help of these three wizards. Spencer was quite impressed by their helpfulness in every respect. They answered each other's questions without ever seeming to be exasperated by them. For a little genius like him, who asked a lot of questions of everyone, it was quite refreshing not to be looked at like a freak. In fact, he spent half his time with Harry. The latter was a pleasure to be around.
On the morning of the final arrest of those responsible for the murder, Spencer had even asked Harry a few more personal questions.
"Harry?
- Yes, Spencer?
- How come you know so much about the spells practiced by this organization?
- I've been the primary target of the dark mage who represented their leader for as long as I can remember.
- Oh... How come?
– It's a bit complicated, to tell the truth... There was a prophecy about him that a soon-to-be-born child would have the power to defeat him. Being rather paranoid, this Dark Wizard decided to respond to the threat as soon as possible in the child's life. So he went to his parents' home when he was just a year old, killed the parents and tried to kill the child. However, the child was protected by an ancient form of magic, formed by his parents' love for him.
The Dark Wizard was instantly destroyed, but only the physical part of himself. He tried to return several times in succession during this same baby's childhood, before succeeding at the age of 14. At the age of 17, the previous baby finally succeeded in defeating him once and for all, and has been trying to contain the entire organization ever since."
Spencer had listened religiously, but was now completely stunned. How could someone so young have gone through all this?
"And that child was you, wasn't it?
- Yes, it was.
- I'm sorry for your loss, Harry. I hope you'll be able to move on one day.
- I've never known anything else in my life so... I'm not sure I will, but thank you. I really appreciate it."
Spencer smiled at him, then plunged back into work.
At the end of the day, they finally found the 3 wizards working together to eliminate the deatheaters (that was the name of the organization, Ronald Weasley, the redhead, had taught him) and children of deserted deatheaters. An important point in the team's portrait.
"Spencer?
- Yes, Harry?
- Would you like to go... for a drink tonight? Just you and me? To... well, to celebrate the end of the investigation?
- With pleasure, Harry," Spencer replied, smiling calmly at the dark-haired man's nervousness. He was kind of cute when he blushed like that.
- Cool! I mean, great! Shall we meet at 7pm in front of the Elephant & Castle? It's a pretty nice bar-restaurant.
- You're on, Harry, see you tonight.
- See you tonight!"
With these last words, Harry fled the room while Spencer gloated in his corner. He had a date! The day could only get more perfect, and was sure to end on a high note.
Spencer had been right, because that evening, Harry was perfectly dressed and seemed more sure of himself, flirting shamelessly with Spencer, who reciprocated the gesture in a very positive way. The two men spent the evening talking more about themselves than about work, and finally decided to head over to the FBI Special Agent's place to end the evening in perfect harmony.
"That's what I call a perfect day, darling."
