Chapter 25
"This place is an assault on the senses," Aranix muttered, his antennae twitching as he weaved through the throngs of Magnolia Town. His regal robes, adorned with intricate silver embroidery, seemed to suffocate him in the humid air, each jostle from a passerby a grating offense against his refined sensibilities.
"Viperion described it as 'vibrant'," Caspian countered, his tone a touch more amused than annoyed. "She said it's typical for human settlements of this size. They thrive on the chaos, apparently." He paused, a subtle smile playing on his lips. "Besides, isn't it intriguing to witness their customs firsthand? It's not every day we have the opportunity to study them in their natural habitat."
Aranix let out a long-suffering sigh, his amber eyes narrowing as they swept over the kaleidoscope of wares displayed in the market stalls. He abruptly halted before a stall overflowing with bolts of fabric, each more garish than the last. "Explain the purpose of these... textiles," he demanded, gesturing with a disdainful flick of his wrist towards a particularly lurid shade of pink.
"Fashion," Caspian replied with a chuckle. "Humans use it to express their individuality, to set themselves apart from the crowd."
Aranix's brow furrowed in disbelief. "Individuality? But all of them seem to be adorned in variations of the same garments."
Caspian's smile widened. "True, but even within those variations, they manage to distinguish themselves. Observe that woman," he said, directing Aranix's attention towards a figure draped in a flowing gown of shimmering green, her head crowned with a hat festooned with exotic feathers. "She certainly possesses a flair for the dramatic."
Aranix tilted his head, his antennae twitching as he appraised the woman with a newfound curiosity. "Indeed," he conceded, "that is... rather striking."
The enticing scent of sizzling meats and sugary confections drew Caspian's attention to a nearby food stall. His stomach rumbled, a sensation he'd only recently become familiar with in his human form. "Come, Aranix," he urged, a hint of eagerness in his voice. "Let's sample the local cuisine. This is called 'barbecue.'"
Aranix wrinkled his nose, his antennae twitching as he eyed the skewers of glistening meat with suspicion. "I prefer our traditional fare," he declared, the scent of smoked chitin and honeydew melon lingering faintly on his breath.
"But you haven't even tried it!" Caspian insisted, his mouth watering as he gestured towards the sizzling grill. "Viperion's letters were full of praise for human culinary creations. Surely there must be something here to tempt your palate."
Aranix hesitated, a flicker of curiosity warring with his ingrained aversion to the unknown. He finally relented, plucking a skewer from the vendor's outstretched hand with a cautious grip. A tentative nibble turned into a surprised widening of his eyes. "Hm," he murmured, his tone thoughtful. "Not entirely unpleasant."
Caspian beamed, a sense of triumph warming his chest. "See? There's more to human culture than meets the eye." He paused, a nostalgic glint in his amber eyes. "Viperion's letters often mentioned how the humans of Emerald Oasis treated her with kindness and respect. Perhaps there's something to be learned from their ways."
Aranix remained silent, chewing thoughtfully on the skewer. His initial skepticism seemed to soften as he savored the unexpected flavors. Perhaps, he mused, there was more to these humans than their chaotic and seemingly illogical customs.
Their culinary adventure continued as they sampled various treats, from crispy fried dough sprinkled with cinnamon sugar to delicate pastries filled with sweet cream. With each bite, Aranix's curiosity grew, and his rigid worldview began to crumble.
As they ventured deeper into the market, a stall laden with shimmering trinkets and glowing orbs caught their attention. Caspian, ever the curious one, gravitated towards a display of intricately carved amulets. "Look at the craftsmanship on these," he marveled, running a fingertip over the smooth surface of a wooden pendant. "Each one seems to radiate with a unique energy."
Aranix approached with a more discerning eye, his gaze sweeping over the collection of baubles and charms. "Human-made trinkets are often mere baubles," he remarked, his tone dismissive. "They lack the raw power and elegance of our own creations."
Caspian chuckled. "Perhaps, but there's a certain ingenuity to their methods. They often blend magic with everyday materials in surprising ways." He held up a small, glowing orb that pulsed with a soft, rhythmic light. "This one, for instance, seems to harness the power of moonlight."
Intrigued, Aranix reached out and gently took the orb from Caspian's hand. His antennae twitched as he examined it, a flicker of interest sparking in his amber eyes. "Moonlight," he mused. "A curious source of energy. Perhaps there's something we could learn from these human mages..."
As Aranix finished speaking, a familiar figure emerged from the crowd. Viperion, her antennae quivering with excitement, rushed towards them, a wide smile spreading across her face. "Aranix! Caspian!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with joy. "I didn't expect to see you here!"
Beside her stood Gideon, Fiora, and Luna, their expressions a mix of surprise and cautious welcome.
"What are you two doing here?!" she asked excitedly.
"We've come to visit you, of course," Caspian replied. "It has been a while since we've seen one another. We became curious about the human society you've written so much about and wanted to see it with our own eyes." He glanced at Aranix, who nodded in confirmation.
"Yes. Even though you're a part of a human colony, you're first and foremost the queen's royal guard," Aranix stated seriously, his gaze sweeping over the group.
Viperion's smile only widened as she ran to the older Fenrir Ant, embracing him in a tight hug. "I've missed you too, Aranix," she chirped, her voice full of genuine affection. She then turned to Caspian and repeated the gesture, her embrace equally warm and enthusiastic. "I've missed you too, Caspian."
"It's good to see you, Viperion," Caspian replied, his voice softening as he returned the embrace.
Aranix gently pulled away, his gaze now fixed on the humans standing before him. "These are the humans who came to our colony," he said, his tone slightly less guarded than before. "I recognize them all, except for the one." He approached the group, his antennae twitching as he scrutinized each individual.
Gideon, Fiora, and Luna felt a wave of nervousness wash over them under Aranix's penetrating gaze. They had faced dangerous foes before, but something about the Fenrir Ant's unwavering intensity sent shivers down their spines.
"You've all grown considerably stronger since our last encounter," Aranix noted, his voice deep and resonant. "I expect nothing less from those who are in the same 'guild' as Viperion."
"Um, thank you, sir," Gideon stammered, his voice a mixture of gratitude and unease. "We appreciate the compliment. It's an honor to meet you. It has been a while since Sconeson."
Luna stepped forward, her movements graceful and precise as she offered a respectful bow. "Welcome to Magnolia Town," she said, her voice soft yet steady. "We appreciate you coming to visit. Viperion has told us much about you both."
Aranix inclined his head in acknowledgment. "Thank you," he replied, his tone softening slightly. "We have come to ascertain that Viperion has integrated well among your kind. We are relieved to see that this is the case."
His gaze then shifted to Fiora, a flicker of interest sparking in his amber eyes. "The fire human," he said, a hint of admiration in his voice. "I recall your impressive display of power. In our colony, you would be considered an excellent mate."
Fiora raised an eyebrow, a spark of indignation igniting in her emerald eyes. "The hell is that supposed to mean?" she retorted, her voice laced with a fiery challenge. "And what exactly do you mean by 'mate'?"
Gideon, sensing a potential conflict, stepped forward, placing a calming hand on Fiora's shoulder. "Fi, remember that they don't quite grasp human customs," he whispered, his voice gentle but firm. "I believe he's saying that in their culture, you're a very powerful female who would be considered a desirable partner."
Fiora's cheeks flushed with a mixture of anger and embarrassment as she turned to glare at Gideon. "A desirable WHAT?" she sputtered, her voice rising in pitch. "Are you saying this creep wants to... to..." Her mind raced through a series of increasingly absurd scenarios, each more humiliating than the last.
"I'll uh... see you all back at the guild," Gideon mumbled, hastily grabbing Fiora's arm and steering her away from the bewildered Fenrir Ants.
"Oh, HELL no!" Fiora roared, her voice echoing through the market as Gideon dragged her away. "I'm not some prize animal for you to ogle and drool over! I'll show you what happens when you mess with the Flame Empress!"
Luna watched the spectacle unfold with a bemused expression, a hint of amusement flickering in her eyes. She then turned back to Aranix and Caspian, offering another graceful bow. "I apologize for Fiora-san's... enthusiasm," she said, her voice calm and measured. "She is not accustomed to such... direct compliments."
Caspian chuckled, his antennae twitching with amusement. "Her outburst is a testament to her strength," he remarked. "In our colony, such a display of passion would be considered a desirable trait in a mate."
Luna's eyes widened slightly, but she quickly regained her composure. "Would you care to join us at our guild hall?" she offered, gesturing towards the direction of Emerald Oasis. "We can offer you refreshments and a place to rest after your journey."
Aranix hesitated for a moment, glancing at Caspian. "Perhaps another time," he began, but Caspian quickly cut him off.
"We would be delighted," Caspian said, a warm smile spreading across his face. "And I must say, her fiery spirit is quite... captivating." He winked at Aranix, who merely sighed in exasperation. "Come along, Aranix," Caspian continued. "Just because you're not interested in human culture doesn't mean I'm not."
"Very well," Aranix conceded, though his tone remained skeptical. "Lead the way, Viperion. I wish to observe this 'guild' you speak so highly of."
Viperion beamed, her antennae practically vibrating with excitement. "Right this way!" she chirped, taking Caspian and Aranix by the arm and leading them towards Emerald Oasis. "I can't wait for you to see it! It's the most wonderful place in all of Fiore!"
As they walked, Viperion excitedly chattered about the guild's activities, traditions, and the unique personalities of its members. Caspian listened attentively, his curiosity piqued, while Aranix maintained a stoic facade, though a flicker of interest occasionally betrayed his true feelings.
"Most wonderful place?" Aranix echoed, his tone laced with doubt as he cast a wary glance around the bustling market. "Do you truly enjoy it that much?"
Viperion's enthusiasm was undeterred. "Oh, yes!" she chirped, her eyes sparkling with genuine joy. "It's where we all work together, relax, and celebrate!"
"Celebrate?" Aranix questioned, his antennae twitching with curiosity. "Like a feast?"
"Exactly!" Viperion exclaimed, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "We have all sorts of celebrations there, like birthdays, festivals, and even parties!"
"Ah yes," Caspian interjected, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Parties. A human tradition centered around communal revelry and merriment." He turned to Aranix, a playful glint in his eyes. "From what I understand, it's like a grand feast, but with less focus on sustenance and more emphasis on... well, frivolity."
Aranix frowned, his antennae twitching in disapproval. "A waste of time and resources," he muttered under his breath. "Back in the colony, we only engage in festivities when there is a clear purpose and objective."
"Don't worry, Aranix," Viperion assured him, her voice gentle and reassuring. "You'll understand once you experience it for yourself."
Luna, who had been observing the exchange with quiet amusement, spoke up. "I believe I shall take my leave now," she announced, her voice calm and measured. "I am going to join Onee-san and Abe-san."
"Okay, bye Luna-san!" Viperion chirped, waving a cheerful goodbye.
With a final bow, Luna turned and walked away, her shadow flickering for a moment before disappearing into the crowd.
-Emerald Oasis, Guild-
"Hey, Coral? When can I go by myself to places again?" Zephyr whined, sprawled across the bar, boredom etched onto his face.
Coral, her hands momentarily pausing on the gleaming glassware, shot him a warm smile. "Since Sylph is resting, you don't have any supervision. I know better than to let you run around unsupervised," she replied, her tone gentle yet firm.
"But I'm bored," he groaned, dragging out the word as he slumped further onto the counter. "And tired of waiting around."
"Oh, bored are we?" Coral's smile turned playful, a mischievous glint in her eye. "In that case, you must be ready for a lesson."
Zephyr's eyes widened in alarm. "Aww, c'mon! Not now! I just wanna go outside and..." He trailed off, unable to think of a specific activity, his desperation evident.
"And do what, exactly?" Coral pressed, her smile unwavering as she leaned closer, her gaze piercing through Zephyr's facade. "Concoct another one of your infamous pranks?"
He shifted uncomfortably, avoiding her gaze. "Well, no..." he mumbled, a faint blush creeping onto his cheeks.
"Uh-huh," Coral replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "I thought so. You still have a few lessons to learn about respecting others' boundaries, young man. One more prank and it's bathroom duty for six months. And that includes scrubbing the grout with a toothbrush."
Zephyr's eyes bulged in horror. The prospect of spending countless hours cleaning the guild's grimy facilities made his stomach churn. "Okay, okay! Fine! I'll study," he relented, his voice laced with begrudging acceptance.
Before Coral could respond, the guild doors burst open, revealing Viperion, her antennae twitching with excitement. "We're here!" she announced, pulling Caspian and Aranix inside. "This is my guild, the Emerald Oasis!"
The two Fenrir Ants gazed around the guild hall, their eyes wide with curiosity. "I've yet to see an oasis," Aranix remarked, his voice dry and pointed. "Rather peculiar for a place named after a lush, verdant paradise." He gestured towards the wooden beams and stone walls. "Do humans truly believe there's vegetation growing here? Such peculiar creatures."
Caspian sighed, a hint of amusement in his voice. "You always see the glass half empty, Aranix," he chided gently. "Don't you find it fascinating how they've recreated nature within these walls? It speaks to their resilience and adaptability."
Aranix merely grunted in response, his gaze still fixed on the guild's decor. "I believe they call this a 'metaphor,'" Viperion piped up, her voice filled with newfound knowledge. "The building is a representation of an emerald oasis, not a literal one."
Aranix scowled. "Humans and their roundabout ways of communication," he muttered under his breath. "Why not simply call it 'Green Indoor Plant House'? That would be far more accurate."
Just then, Coral approached the group, her smile warm and welcoming. "Oh my, hello there, Viperion! And who might these distinguished guests be?"
"This is Aranix and Caspian," Viperion chirped. "They're ants from my colony. They came to visit!" She turned to her companions. "This is Coral. She's super nice."
"How delightful!" Coral exclaimed, clasping her hands together. "Are these your family?"
Viperion tilted her head, confused. "Family? I do not understand. These are my fellow soldiers, serving the same queen."
"We're more like comrades in arms," Aranix clarified, his tone matter-of-fact. "The concept of 'family' as you understand it does not directly translate to our society."
Coral's smile faltered for a moment before returning in full force. "Ah, yes, of course," she said, quickly recovering her composure. "However, even though you're part of the same guild, you trust each other and love to spend time together, correct?"
"Absolutely!" Viperion replied, her enthusiasm infectious.
"Well, then, that's exactly what family is, silly!" Coral chuckled, placing a reassuring hand on Viperion's shoulder. "It means you have a deep bond and care for each other."
Viperion considered this for a moment, her antennae twitching thoughtfully. "I do care for them," she admitted, a hint of warmth in her voice. "And I would be sad if they were not around... Then, I suppose we are family."
Aranix opened his mouth to speak, but Caspian nudged him with an elbow, silencing him with a stern look.
"I'm glad to hear you think of us that way, Viperion," Caspian said, his voice warm and sincere. "However, I am curious... why did you call her 'Vi'?"
"Vi is just a nickname we sometimes use," Coral explained. "It's shorter and easier to say than her full name."
Aranix pondered this for a moment, his brow furrowed in concentration. "It seems humans are too lazy to respectfully pronounce one's given name," he concluded, shaking his head in disapproval.
Caspian shook his head, a wry smile touching his lips. "It's simply a shortened version of her full name," he explained. "Sometimes humans give each other nicknames as a sign of affection. It's quite common, actually."
Aranix's antennae twitched in disbelief. "I'm disturbed by your sudden fascination with human customs," he remarked, his tone a mix of amusement and exasperation. "There was a time when you were just as wary of them as I am."
"Times change, old friend," Caspian replied with a philosophical air. "As our species evolves, so must our perspectives." He turned to Viperion, a warmth in his eyes. "Your name is beautiful in its entirety, but I must admit, 'Vi' has a certain charm to it. Perhaps I shall adopt the nickname as well."
Viperion beamed, her antennae practically vibrating with delight. "Yes, please do!" she chirped.
"Well then," Coral chimed in, her ever-present smile widening, "why don't you all take a seat at the bar? I'll fetch the guild master to give you a proper welcome. Make yourselves at home!"
Viperion eagerly hopped onto a bar stool, her excitement palpable. Aranix and Caspian followed suit, taking a seat beside her. Zephyr, who had been observing the exchange with wide eyes, leaned in, his curiosity piqued.
"Whoa... are you guys really ants?" he asked, his voice filled with wonder. "I've seen Vi with her exoskeleton on, but I forget you're ants sometimes."
Aranix leaned forward, his amber eyes scrutinizing the boy. His antennae twitched, detecting the faint hum of magical energy emanating from Zephyr. "You possess a considerable amount of latent power," he observed, a hint of surprise in his voice. "Intriguing."
Viperion nodded, her antennae bobbing in agreement. "This is Zephyr," she explained. "He's an S-Class mage in our guild. The wind spirit Sylph has chosen him to wield her power."
"Impressive," Caspian remarked, his eyes alight with interest. "You have achieved much in a short span of time." He paused, a thoughtful look crossing his face. "The name Zephyr... it sounds familiar. Is this the human you trained with, the one who helped you refine your flying abilities?"
Viperion's smile widened. "That's him, alright!" she exclaimed. "He's a really good friend."
Zephyr blushed slightly under their combined attention, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "Thanks," he mumbled. "But Vi is a really talented mage too! She took down a Wyvern all on her own!"
Caspian nodded, a hint of pride in his voice. "Indeed, she is quite exceptional. Viperion has always been gifted when it comes to combat," he said, reaching out to pat her on the shoulder. "In fact, she might even surpass me one day."
Viperion's eyes sparkled with determination. "I hope so," she declared. "I'm eager to show you both what I've learned. You two are very important to me."
Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Guild Master Basil, who approached them with a warm smile and a welcoming demeanor. "Welcome to Emerald Oasis," he greeted them, his voice gentle and inviting. "Family members of Vi are always welcome here. Please, allow me to offer you some refreshments. Anything you desire."
Aranix nodded, his expression impassive. "Blood of a slug and leaves, topped with tonic of dew," he requested, his voice devoid of emotion.
Caspian raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Are you sure you wouldn't prefer to explore the local cuisine? I was hoping the barbecue we sampled earlier would have piqued your interest."
Aranix merely glared at Caspian, his antennae twitching impatiently. "Blood and dew," he repeated, his tone firm. "Now. Make it quick."
Caspian sighed, a hint of exasperation in his voice. "My apologies," he said, turning to Basil. "My companion is... particular about his preferences."
Basil, unfazed by the unusual request, nodded politely. "Of course," he said, his smile unwavering. "We may not have those exact ingredients, but I can certainly concoct something similar. Perhaps some wine mixed with fresh lemon water and a touch of honey?"
Aranix grunted in agreement, though his expression remained skeptical. Caspian, however, shot him with a disapproving look. "We are guests here, Aranix," he hissed under his breath. "Try to show some manners."
Basil returned a few moments later, carrying a tray with two glasses. "Here you are," he said, placing a glass of red liquid before Aranix. "Lemonade with a dash of wine and a touch of honey. It should be to your liking." He then poured a generous amount of sake into a traditional cup and placed it before Caspian. "And for you, sir, I recommend our finest sake. It's a popular drink on this continent, made from fermented rice."
Caspian eyed the cup curiously, inhaling the sweet, pungent aroma. He took a delicate sip, his eyes widening in surprise as the complex flavors danced across his tongue. "This is... surprisingly pleasant," he remarked, a hint of wonder in his voice. "Quite different from what I expected."
Basil chuckled. "Indeed, it is. But be careful, it has a high alcohol content."
Meanwhile, Aranix had already drained his glass in a single gulp. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, a thoughtful expression on his face. "It was... tolerable," he admitted grudgingly. "The wine had a peculiar fermented taste, and the alcohol leaves a strange burning sensation. However, it was not as repulsive as I had anticipated."
Viperion beamed, her antennae twitching with pride. "Master Basil is the best guild master in all of Fiore!" she declared. "He's the strongest of us all, and incredibly kind to boot!"
Basil blushed slightly, his cheeks turning a faint shade of pink. "Oh, well, I wouldn't say the strongest," he demurred, his voice barely above a whisper. "Perhaps just... experienced."
Aranix scoffed, his gaze sweeping over Basil's slender frame. "Experienced? It's highly doubtful that this weak, scrawny human possesses any significant power."
"Um... scrawny?" Basil repeated, his voice barely audible.
Zephyr, who had been observing the exchange with barely concealed amusement, patted Basil on the back. "Don't worry, Master," he said, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "He clearly doesn't understand human anatomy."
Aranix leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as he studied Basil with renewed intensity. Basil, feeling increasingly uncomfortable, shifted in his seat, unsure of how to respond to the Fenrir Ant's scrutiny.
"Perhaps I was mistaken," Aranix finally said, his voice low and thoughtful. "You are indeed powerful. Your meek and unassuming facade is quite convincing." He nodded slowly, his antennae twitching in approval. "Even though you lack an exoskeleton, your magical energy is remarkably potent. An impressive feat, considering the inherent weakness of your human shell."
Basil blinked, his confusion evident. "Um... thank you?" he offered, unsure if it was a compliment or an insult.
"You are most welcome," Aranix replied, oblivious to Basil's bewilderment.
Just then, a familiar voice cut through the air, filled with indignation. "Excuse me? What's this about someone being called weak?"
Everyone turned to see Fiora storming towards them, a fiery aura radiating from her form. Gideon trailed behind, his expression a mix of amusement and resignation as he attempted to calm her down.
"Who's calling who weak?" Fiora demanded, her voice a low growl. "I'll take you on right here, right now!" Her fists clenched, sparks of orange flame dancing between her fingers.
Aranix, unfazed by her outburst, simply tilted his head and replied, "You are not what I seek in a mate."
Fiora's jaw dropped, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Mate?! You think I want a man to mate with?!" she sputtered, her face turning a deep shade of crimson. The flames on her hands intensified, flickering dangerously.
Gideon, sensing the situation escalating, quickly intervened. "Fi, calm down," he urged, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "Remember, they have a different culture and..."
"Shut up!" Fiora snapped, shaking off his hand. "I'm not letting some creepy old man call me a mate! What the hell is wrong with these ant people anyway?!"
Aranix frowned, his antennae twitching in annoyance. "I am a mere forty years old, hardly past my prime," he retorted. "But perhaps Caspian is a more suitable candidate. He is, after all, seeking a mate to perform a courtship dance with."
Fiora's eyes nearly bulged out of her head. "A WHAT?" she shrieked, her voice reaching a pitch that could shatter glass. Flames erupted from her body, scorching the air around her.
Coral, who had been watching the scene with a mix of amusement and concern, burst into laughter, unable to contain herself any longer. Gideon, however, looked increasingly worried as he tried to restrain Fiora's fiery rage.
Caspian, meanwhile, blushed a deep shade of crimson, his antennae drooping in embarrassment. "Aranix," he hissed, his voice barely a whisper. "I thought we agreed not to mention my... personal matters."
Aranix waved a dismissive hand. "It is time you started thinking about the future, Caspian," he said. "You are a powerful and respected member of the queen's guard. A courtship dance with a strong human female would be a fitting display of your prowess." He turned back to Fiora, his tone matter-of-fact. "I believe you humans call this... 'fighting'?"
Gideon's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Dance? Fighting?" he asked, his voice laced with uncertainty.
Aranix nodded. "It is easier to demonstrate," he said. He turned to Basil, his gaze unwavering. "Guild Master Greenbloom, is there a suitable location for combat?"
Basil, startled by Aranix's sudden intensity, hesitated for a moment before nodding slowly. "Um, yes," he stammered. "Right this way. I'll show you to the training grounds."
With a curt nod, Aranix followed Basil towards the back of the guild hall, Caspian trailing behind him with a sheepish grin. Viperion, caught between excitement and apprehension, exchanged a nervous glance with Gideon and Fiora before hurrying after them.
Basil led the group towards the back of the guild hall, Caspian and a bewildered Viperion trailing behind him. They emerged into an open clearing, the terrain smooth and rocky, ideal for a sparring match.
"I wanna watch!" Zephyr exclaimed, bouncing on the balls of his feet with uncontainable excitement.
Coral sighed, rolling her eyes. "Sure," she conceded, knowing it would be a losing battle to argue with the excitable wind mage, "as long as you stay behind the sidelines."
Caspian stepped forward, and with a confident grin, began to pull off his armor. Fiora's jaw dropped, her face flushed crimson.
"W-what are you doing?!" She sputtered, completely flustered.
Unfazed by her reaction, Caspian continued, shedding his tunic and trousers until he stood completely naked in front of them. Gideon and Basil averted their eyes, faces beet red. Zephyr, however, doubled over in a fit of laughter, tears streaming down his face. Coral, her maternal instincts kicking in, swiftly covered Zephyr's eyes.
Just as quickly as they came off, a soft blue light enveloped Caspian. Ethernano swirled, his human form disappearing as it was encased in the familiar click and clack of his hardened exoskeleton. Insect wings unfurled, strong and iridescent, and his expression morphed into one of unwavering focus.
Zephyr, having wriggled free from Coral's grasp, stared with wide eyes. "Well, I wasn't expecting thiiiissss..."
Caspian's demeanor had transformed entirely. He was no longer the awkward suitor, but a hardened warrior.
"I will demonstrate my strength," He declared, his voice a deep resonance that echoed through the clearing. "I will ensure you are impressed. Do not hold back."
His amber eyes, gleaming with a warrior's challenge, fixed on Fiora. "Now begin."
Fiora gritted her teeth, the flames around her already crackling with anticipation, even though the blush still lingered on her cheeks.
"Like I need you to tell me that," she scoffed. Fire danced across her arms and legs, turning from a vibrant orange to a menacing dark red. "Guess I don't need to hold back."
"Wait, Fi!" Gideon interjected, worry lacing his voice. "Why are you getting mad?"
She shot him a withering glance. "Hah? Who's mad?"
Coral, observing the exchange with a mix of amusement and growing concern, placed a calming hand on Gideon's arm.
"For some reason, she doesn't acknowledge how she channels her magic," she explained softly. "It's something I learned when we trained in the Emerald Grove. She just... does it. Although, this is the first time I've seen her tap into her true potential."
Fiora, ignoring their conversation entirely, locked eyes with Caspian. "Let me show you I'm not some prize to be had," she snarled. "Blazing Soul: Devil's Descent!"
In a flash, she vanished, a fleeting outline of flames the only evidence she'd even been there. Caspian's eyes scanned the training ground, desperately searching for his opponent. Before he could react, a red-hot fist slammed into his face, sending him skidding across the ground. Claw marks etched into the earth, a testament to the force of the blow.
"Damnit… That hurt!" Caspian grimaced, pulling himself to his feet. Realizing that a grounded approach wouldn't work against such a swift opponent, he spread his wings, taking to the air. He whipped them with a practiced flick, launching a volley of razor-sharp chitin plates towards the airborne fire mage.
Each plate hurtled towards Fiora with the speed of a bullet. She didn't flinch, a wild, almost devilish grin spreading across her face.
"Where ya aimin'?" She taunted, her voice echoing with a playful menace. Then, with a powerful kick that cracked the earth beneath her, she activated her magic.
"Blazing Soul: Hell's Jet Explosion!" Fire roared around her hands and feet, propelling her higher into the air. She twisted gracefully, her body a fiery blur as she aimed her palms at Caspian.
"Blazing Soul: Inferno Shot!" She cried out, unleashing a barrage of fiery projectiles. Caspian, his wings now serving as shields, was engulfed in a symphony of explosions. Smoke billowed, obscuring the duel momentarily. Then, he emerged, wings tattered but still beating, forced back towards the earth with a desperate flap. He landed with a heavy thud, bracing himself against the impact.
"Damn it..." he muttered, clutching his chest.
"Giving up? I'm not surprised you can't keep up, with your old age," Fiora sneered, a triumphant smirk gracing her lips as she descended slowly, her flames crackling with unabashed power.
Caspian glared up at her, his pride stinging. "In human years, I'm only twenty years of age," he retorted, refusing to concede defeat. "Age shouldn't mean anything if I have the skills and abilities to overcome my opponents. Besides," he added, a steely glint in his eye, "the fight's not over yet."
His aura flared, pushing back any lingering smoke and debris, a silent declaration of his unwavering resolve. The battle, far from over, was about to take a turn.
His aura flared, pushing away any remaining debris in the battlefield.
"Magic, as you humans call it, is merely a tool." Aranix explained. He looked over to Gideon, a thoughtful look on his face.
Aranix watched the exchange with a thoughtful frown, his antennae twitching as he analyzed Caspian's struggles. Turning to Gideon, he posed a question, his voice deep and resonant. "Have you ever seen Viperion fight? Or do you rely solely on your 'magic'?" He paused, his gaze intense. "As a warrior of the queen, her strength is her armor. Magic is simply a sword."
Gideon, startled by the unexpected query, stammered a reply. "Y-yeah, I have." He glanced at Viperion, who was watching the duel with a mixture of concern and fascination. "She's incredibly strong. Much stronger than most people I know."
Viperion blushed, ducking her head shyly. "Gideon... You're making me blush."
Aranix smirked, a flicker of approval in his eyes. "Well, that's excellent news. With her prowess, you'd be a fool to not acknowledge how skilled she is."
Gideon shifted uncomfortably, unsure how to respond to the Fenrir Ant's pointed observation. "When we first met, she was incredibly strong. I had a hard time defending myself against her." He chuckled nervously. "But then again, I can't bring myself to hit a girl." Then, with a mischievous grin, he added, "Except Fiora. She's not a girl."
Fiora, her focus momentarily broken by Gideon's teasing, whipped her head around, her eyes blazing with fiery indignation. "The hell you say about me?!"
"Fi, no!" Gideon cried, his warning lost in the wind as a searing fireball hurtled past him, scorching the very spot where he had stood seconds before.
Fiora, her anger momentarily redirected, turned back to Caspian, a predatory glint in her eyes. "Now I'm really mad," she snarled. "Come here so I can knock that exo-whatever off you."
She launched herself towards Caspian, flames swirling around her like a living tempest. He braced himself, his newly formed claws glinting as he prepared to counter her attack.
"I hope to match your ability soon," Caspian stated, his voice ringing with a newfound confidence.
A soft blue light suddenly enveloped Caspian, a spherical barrier of concentrated Ethernano forming around him. Fiora skidded to a halt, her fiery charge interrupted, her anger momentarily eclipsed by bewilderment.
"What the hell...?" she sputtered, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her face for the first time.
Aranix, observing the unfolding battle with keen interest, stepped forward, his voice booming across the training ground. "Viperion told us of her battle with the Wyvern," he explained. "She explained that she had unlocked a connection to our ancestors. Caspian and I strived to keep up with her. This," he gestured towards Caspian, whose blue aura was starting to fade, "is the result of our efforts."
The light vanished completely, revealing Caspian in his transformed state. Razor-sharp claws, resembling talons, extended from his fingertips. His amber eyes, now narrowed into vertical slits like a predatory cat's, gleamed with an almost feral intensity. His fangs extended slightly, glinting in the sunlight, and his shoulders seemed broader, his exoskeleton stretched taut over a more powerful physique.
"Primal Exoskeleton: Claws!" he roared, a wave of potent mana erupting outwards. He charged towards Fiora, claws slashing through the air where she stood mere moments before. She ducked, barely avoiding the blow, the wind from his swing powerful enough to send a shiver down her spine.
Behind her, a tree shuddered, its bark stripped away, leaving a deep scar of claw marks etched into the wood. Fiora, her bravado shaken, scrambled back, the flames surrounding her body taking on a more frantic, unpredictable dance.
"Blazing Soul: Hell's Erupting Pillar!" she screamed, slamming her fist onto the ground. A pillar of dark red fire erupted beneath Caspian's feet, forcing him to leap back with a startled cry.
"How bout this?!" Fiora yelled, her voice laced with a manic energy. She raised her leg, fire engulfing it in a blazing inferno.
"Blazing Soul: Infernal Meteor!" she shouted, launching her foot towards Caspian's face. The flames concentrated into a drill-like shape, a terrifying fusion of power and speed.
Caspian, his instincts honed from countless battles, reacted instantly. He crossed his arms defensively, bracing himself for the impact. The inferno crashed against him, an explosion of fire and force that sent a shockwave rippling through the clearing. Smoke billowed, obscuring the combatants from view.
Gideon gripped Viperion's arm, his knuckles white. "Vi, aren't you going to stop this?"
Viperion shook her head, her gaze unwavering. "It would be rude to interfere," she replied, her voice calm despite the chaos unfolding before them. "Caspian accepted the challenge to face off against a worthy opponent. Win or lose, this is his resolve as a warrior. To ask for me to interject would dishonor his pride."
"But he's… y'know…" Gideon stammered, his worry evident.
"I understand your apprehension," she reassured him. "But I wish to remind you, Gideon, even though I may look human, I am still a Fenrir Ant. We take pride in displaying our talents. Our lives are built upon survival and protecting our colony. Our queen chose us because she believes not only in our strength, but in our ability to emerge victorious."
Gideon looked back towards the swirling smoke, his expression conflicted.
"I hope that it doesn't get out of hand," he murmured, his voice barely a whisper. "Fi's not known for her awareness of her surroundings."
As the smoke cleared, Caspian emerged. His exoskeleton was barely singed, a testament to its resilience. Fiora, however, was breathing heavily, her flames flickering with a mix of exhaustion and fury.
"Give up yet?" she taunted, forcing a smirk despite the tremor in her voice. "I'm not surprised you can't keep up, with your old age."
Caspian glared at her, his pride stinging. "In human years, I'm only twenty years of age," he corrected, his voice laced with a hint of annoyance. "Age shouldn't mean anything if I have the skills and abilities to overcome my opponents. Besides," he added, a steely glint in his eye, "the fight's not over yet."
He stood tall, his posture radiating an almost defiant confidence. "Come at me with everything you've got," he challenged. "I need to gauge what you're capable of."
Fiora grinned, a predatory spark igniting in her emerald eyes. "Yeah, I'll finish this right now, bug boy," she snarled, taking a step back to gather her strength. She suddenly unbuckled her jacket and tossed it aside, revealing a simple tank top that clung to her toned form.
"What is she doing?" Zephyr asked, his eyes wide with curiosity. Coral, with a sigh, covered his eyes again.
"Perhaps it's time for you to go inside, hm?" she suggested sweetly. "You've already seen enough…" she added under her breath, glancing nervously at the discarded jacket.
Basil, however, watched with an intrigued frown. "Well, this is the first time I've seen her do that," he mused, his voice thoughtful. "I was almost sure her jacket was like her second skin. To see it come off in battle must mean that she's getting serious."
"Master Basil!" Fiora called out, her voice ringing with a newfound intensity.
"Uh, yeah?" Basil squeaked, startled by her sudden outburst.
Fiora turned to face him, a determined glint in her eyes. "I've been trying to replicate those blue flames – the ones that came out when we fought that Wyvern bastard. But no matter how hard I try, it hasn't worked. So," she took a deep breath, her fiery aura flaring, "I made this instead."
She channeled her magic, the flames surrounding her body intensifying, transforming from a vibrant orange to a more menacing, pulsating crimson. The flames danced and swirled, engulfing her legs and arms, then converged around her stomach like a molten corset. A pair of horns, sculpted from pure fire, flickered to life above her head, casting eerie shadows across her determined face. Tiny flames danced at the corners of her eyes, mirroring the burning intensity within.
The group stared in awe. The ground beneath their feet cracked, wisps of smoke and steam escaping from the fissures. Basil, his brow furrowed in concentration, quickly traced a circle in the air, pushing a surge of green energy into the earth. Trees began to sprout around them, growing with unnatural speed, forming a protective barrier.
"Just in case," he murmured, his voice tinged with a hint of worry.
Zephyr, his eyes wide with awe, gaped at the spectacle unfolding before him. "Whoa… What is that?" he exclaimed, his voice trembling with excitement. "It's like when I invoke my contract with Sylph. But this… This is much cooler!"
Coral, however, was speechless. She'd never witnessed such raw, untamed power radiating from Fiora. A flicker of concern mixed with pride crossed her features.
"Unbelievable… Fi…" she whispered, her gaze locked on her friend's transformation.
"I call this spell, Red Hot Boom." Fiora grinned, her voice a husky rasp against the roar of the flames surrounding her.
Caspian, his amber eyes narrowed with a warrior's focus, tilted his head slightly. "That's certainly an interesting technique," he remarked, his curiosity piqued. "I'm intrigued to witness its properties."
"Glad you think so," Fiora replied, her grin widening as the fire danced around her, twisting and contorting with a terrifying grace. "Enjoy it while you can. Because this fight is…"
She vanished in a flash. A ring of fire hovered where she had stood mere moments before. It expanded rapidly, engulfing the clearing in a searing inferno, then imploded with a deafening BOOM that shook the very foundations of the guild. Shockwaves rippled through the air, sending a powerful gust of wind and debris hurtling towards the spectators.
"…Over."
Caspian, caught in the heart of the blast, staggered, his exoskeleton now riddled with tiny, smoldering craters. Before he could recover, a blur of red and orange slammed into him. Fiora was upon him, her flames crackling with a renewed fury as her fists pummeled him with relentless power. He blocked with his forearms, but even his reinforced exoskeleton couldn't withstand the onslaught. Each strike cracked and shattered his armor, sending shards flying through the air.
Fiora, fueled by an uncontrollable rage, moved with a speed and ferocity he'd never witnessed before. She materialized before him, her fist reared back, engulfed in a monstrous, howling inferno of crimson fire.
"And THIS!" she roared, her voice a primal scream against the roar of the flames. "IS MY RED HOT BIG BANG!"
She unleashed the full force of her magic. Coral, reacting instantly, threw up a shield of water, desperately trying to protect the spectators from the ensuing blast. The water boiled and hissed as the flames crashed against it, a wave of superheated steam engulfing the clearing.
A moment later, silence descended. The steam dissipated, revealing Fiora standing amidst a scorched and shattered landscape, her flames still dancing around her, but dimmer now, tinged with a hint of exhaustion.
She looked around, her emerald eyes scanning the battlefield until they landed on Caspian. He was kneeling on one knee, his exoskeleton shattered, revealing the battered flesh beneath. A lone tree trunk, its bark charred and smoking, stood between them, a testament to Basil's quick thinking.
"I believe you've made your point," Basil said, his voice stern yet laced with a hint of pride.
Fiora let out a harsh laugh, her fiery aura flickering. "Heh," she rasped, wiping a trickle of sweat from her brow. "I was hoping I'd get to use this in the Grand Magic Games. But, I guess this works too."
Basil chuckled, his usual warmth returning to his eyes as he surveyed the scene. "I'm happy to see you've been improving," he said, his voice gentle. "I'm a man of my word, after all."
Caspian, struggling to regain his footing, looked up at Fiora, his amber eyes filled with a strange mixture of admiration and defeat.
Aranix, who had remained silent during the fight, strode towards Caspian, his regal robes billowing as he moved. He offered a hand to the younger Fenrir Ant, helping him to his feet.
"You've performed admirably, Caspian," Aranix said, his voice deep and resonant. "Do not allow this loss to hinder your progress. Use it to improve. As the humans say," he added, a subtle smile playing on his lips, "'there's always tomorrow.'"
"He glanced at Aranix, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Was that a metaphor?" he asked, his tone playful. A flicker of amusement crossing his face. "And here I thought you didn't like humans not expressing themselves directly," he quipped, his voice laced with gentle teasing.
Aranix's stern façade cracked momentarily, "I suppose you could say, I am slowly beginning to understand humans better. After all, this demonstration has shown me that we were right in letting Viperion join this guild. They are indeed worthy of being called... 'family'."
Coral looked over to Viperion. Suddenly, she runs over and pulls Viperion into a big hug.
"You really think so Vi? We're family? You're just the cutest little ant! Oooh, I just love how adorable you are! Thank you!" She squealed. Viperion struggled.
"Of course! I think of you guys like family!" She squirmed. She was gasping for air and tapping Coral on the arm. "Coral-san!" She cried out, suffocating within Coral's grasp. Zephyr had run over to Fiora, stars in his eyes.
"That was so cool! What was all that? Those powers and the fire and-and the wind! And the explosions!" he said quickly. Fiora ruffled his hair.
"Hey, kid. One thing at a time." She laughed. Gideon walked up to her with her jacket.
"You continue to impress me, Fi. Means I gotta step up my game." He complimented. She grabbed it and put it on.
"Yeah well, can't keep still, I got someone who I can't let surpass me." She grinned.
Caspian, now fully clothed, approach the fire mage.
"That was an impressive show of strength. I am in awe of you. I am grateful you did not hold back. To do so would insult my skills as a soldier." He explained.
"You asked for it, and I always aim to deliver." She bragged. Caspian bowed politely.
"Never have I experienced such a satisfying fight." He placed his right hand over his heart and bowed. "That is why I would like to ask for your permission to become 'Forever Mates'. Or as you humans call it, marriage." He asked.
Zephyr laughed loudly, falling to the ground. Fiora grew red, turning away.
"What?!" She yelped. Caspian looked at her confused, antenna twitching. Viperion gasped, her face becoming flushed with heat. Aranix had his arms crossed, nodding in approval.
"Your power was unlike anything I've ever seen. To think, I would have never known a female such as you existed had I not left the nest. And I consider it very lucky that our first meeting resulted in a promise to join each other." He explained, his eyes lighting up. He moved in closer, lifting Fiora's hand. "Your strength is far greater than anyone else I've ever faced, and I am willing to dedicate my entire life to you." he said proudly.
"Eeehh?! Waitwaitwaitwait!" She sputtered out, pulling her hand free. Caspian looked at her confused.
"Is it the name? Would you prefer 'fiancé' to 'forever mate'?" he asked genuinely. Fiora turned to Viperion.
"Vi! What is happening?!" She asked. Gideon was shocked, his face flushed as well.
"Fiora-san! Caspian is saying he loves you! He wants to court you and marry you!" He answered.
Coral gasped excitedly.
"How romantic! An unrequited love that has blossomed before your eyes!"
Zephyr had nothing to say, for he was still rolling on the floor, laughing. Basil approached the pair.
"W-well, it seems we have an interesting development occur here." He coughed. Fiora's face turned into a scowl.
"Why me?! I don't even know this guy! I don't want to be married! I haven't even been to the Grand Magic Games! How am I supposed to become Flame Empress if I'm tied down? Huh?! How!" She cried out. Caspian walked over to her and held her hand once more.
"All of your objections have been accounted for. I would not dare stand in the way of such a powerful mate. I would support you wholeheartedly on your journey to achieve greatness. But as you walk to the top, I too shall walk alongside you to catch a glimpse of that glorious view." He vowed. Fiora's eye twitched, her face steaming red. She reared a fist and decked him in the face!
"NO!" She yelled out, causing him to tumble across the ground. He stood, brushing off his shirt nonchalantly.
"I assure you, you are the only one for me. I promise to win your affections with this dance." He stated calmly, moving to an open space. He stood with legs wide and hands behind him, closing his eyes.
"Wha-what's happening now?" Fiora asked extremely puzzled. Viperion gasped.
"He's going to do it!" She exclaimed. Aranix nodded in approval.
"As a warrior should." He stated firmly. Coral giggled.
"Oh, isn't this exciting~!" She cooed.
Caspian opened his arms, his right hand high, his left low. His body swayed as his feet tapped together, then spun, his left hand above his head, he moved across the dirt arena in a mesmerizing dance. Fiora froze.
"He's 'dancing' for her." Viperion explained happily, clapping along to the rhythm Caspian created with his movements. Zephyr laughed even louder.
"This is the greatest day ever!" He howled, tears in his eyes. "Fi is gonna get married!"
"Quiet you damn brat!" She shouted. Gideon looked at the spectacle in shock and awe. Fiora gritted her teeth.
"If you're going to do this... I'll burn you to a crisp!" She yelled.
"Now now Fiora. He's just expressing himself. It's no different than you do. However," he turned to Aranix and Caspian, "I'm sure you understand, she's one of my guild members. And if she declines," Basil continued, removing his glasses. His eyes narrowed, his usual cheery demeanor gone. "I'll have to insist on honoring that." He threatened.
Aranix was about to speak before Caspian cut him off.
"No, of course. I respect Fiora's decision. I understand in human culture, both party's feelings on subjects matter. I simply was expressing myself as I could from my culture. However, I am enamored by her, and I wish to properly convey my feelings. I aim to fully understand how I can do that in human terms. I apologize for any inconvenience I've caused. I meant no harm." He explained with a bow.
Basil replaced his glasses, sighing. "I know. But just as Fi's my family, they all are as well. And if anything happened to any one of them, I couldn't live with myself. But, tell you what. Let's let bygones be bygones. I, of course, am not one to stand in the way of love. But, as you say, her feelings on the matter are important as well. Right, Fi?" He asked. Fiora scowled.
"Ugh... Fine. Look, bug boy. I appreciate the sentiment and everything. But if you wanna start dating a girl like me, you gotta bring your A game. I'm not taking no loser as a husband. So either you get better or get gone. Got it?" She snapped.
Caspian stood up straight, looking at her seriously. "Then I shall make it my life's mission to become a worthy suitor for you. Is that acceptable?" he asked.
"Tch, I guess it works for me. Whatever."
"In the meantime, Magnolia Town is holding a festival today. Why don't you two come with us? It'll be a great opportunity to mingle with humans, no?" Coral suggested with a knowing smile. Caspian nodded in agreement.
"I see... That seems reasonable enough."
"Thank you for the invitation. But, if I may, I actually wish to speak with the guild master first." Aranix requested. Basil gestured to his office.
"Of course. Let's discuss in private." He replied. "Everyone else, please wait outside. There are some matters to take care of, especially concerning our guests."
They made their way inside, the door shutting behind them. The room was mostly composed of wood and greenery, plants hanging off of walls and bookcases filled with tomes and scripts. Aranix looked around curiously, adjusting his uniform. Uno, Dos, and Tres woke up in their potted plants, eyeing the guest curiously.
"Don't worry. We know he's not human." He told the wooden golems. The two sat, with Basil behind his desk.
"What is it you would like to talk about?" Basil asked. "And how do I address you, anyway? By rank, or...?"
Aranix shook his head, a laugh leaving him.
"Of course not. Formality is not required here. I come at the request of our queen, Queen Calypso. Neither Viperion nor Caspian know of this. But it will involve them." The older Fenrir Ant reached into his jacket and pulled out a letter. He leaned forward and placed it on the desk.
"I believe it customary to call this a, 'quest', as Viperion has explained. We would like to ask for your guild's help." Aranix said, the golem watching the Ant closely. Basil took the letter, noticing the crest on it.
"What exactly do you need, sir Aranix?" He asked.
"The truth is a new enemy has been discovered. Since the day that your guild arrived at our nest all that time ago, the queen had realized the damage the relationships we have with others as a species that has been done. I'm sure you're aware that some eggs of ours were stolen. At the same time, strange Fenrir Ants have been attacking human settlements." Basil sighed, opening the envelope.
"I feared something like this would happen. Is there a reason for this attack?" he questioned, carefully reading the contents of the letter.
"Our queen suspects that another faction of Fenrir Ants has arisen, but it's hard to distinguish from where. They, as I said, are abnormal." He paused. "The Fenrir Ant race itself has a history of conquest, in some ways. But we are not a race that take more than is needed. We pride ourselves as warriors to defend our colony from any threat, no matter how powerful. I do not mean to insinuate that our attacks on others have been righteous...but, the main purpose for that behavior was due to necessity. When resources grow scarce, and when we expand too far, wars are inevitable. However, these Fenrir Ants are purposefully attacking human villages." he clarified. "They don't appear to steal, rather, they destroy."
"Are you suggesting that there is a colony actively trying to expand?"
"Yes. Or more specifically, build an army. Which leads to another pressing issue: some of those stolen eggs were royal lineage." Aranix admitted with a hint of guilt in his voice.
"I was not strong enough to stop them. As the letter states, they were human, which is why we were so aggressive to your guild when they came to our colony. And for that, I deeply apologize. Please forgive us."
"There's no need to apologize," Basil interjected, placing his hand in the air to silence him. "You've suffered greatly because of this, I can tell. My guild will assist you to the best of our ability. Now, tell me, what would you like us to do?"
Aranix sighed with relief, bowing his head. "Thank you, Mr. Greenbloom." Aranix sat up. "We have been actively sending out spies to investigate this matter. And we believe we've finally found the culprits. Our queen somehow knows that you are familiar with the ones responsible."
"Hmmm..." Basil hummed.
"They too come from a guild. However, as our spies informed us, they are not like normal guild's as Viperion described. They go by the name, the Shadowvein Covenant."
Basil's eyes widened and his heart began to race. He clasped his hands and squeezed sweat forming in his forehead.
"A-are you sure?"
"Unfortunately, so. We do want to risk being misinterpreted by humans when we attempt to retaliate. The queen thought it best to leverage our connection to you through Viperion. So, she chose to ask for your assistance instead, in order to prevent unnecessary violence." He explained. Basil nodded, trying to hold it together.
"I understand. If you don't mind, I'll need some time to consider this request. I'll have a meeting with my guild, and we'll discuss our way forward." Basil stood, a smile tugging at his lips. "I'll be but a moment, but I'll join you and the other momentarily downstairs." He reached a hand out. Aranix looked at the hand. He reached out a hand as well, mimicking the gesture. They stood there for several seconds...
"Um, yes. In human culture, we call this a handshake. It is a gesture to solidify an agreement or greeting." Basil grasped Aranix's hand and shook it.
"Ah, I see. This is most peculiar. To be honest, I am somewhat hesitant to indulge in the customs of humans. I do not want to tarnish the integrity of my people by adapting to such frivolities... But seeing Viperion and the way she is here has thoroughly changed my mind. From the deepest reaches of my warrior soul, thank you for allowing her to join this guild."
"Please, think nothing of it. She's always had a kind heart. So, it comes as no surprise to me that she would fit right in here. Besides, after that display of dedication and skill out there, I would be stupid if I didn't accept her as one of our own. Vi is a mighty warrior and she has done nothing but made me proud to be her guild master. Just as any one of my other guild members."
Aranix laughed warmly, pulling Basil close into a friendly hug. "Forgive me, sir Greenbloom, I cannot help myself. That is how my kind express friendship. Are you comfortable with this?" he asked worriedly.
"Hahahaha, of course! Your friendliness is most appreciated. It shows just how far your people have come. So don't worry so much!" Basil replied, returning the hug.
"You are very wise indeed, sir Greenbloom." He replied, separating. "I am glad to see that things have changed for the better since my people have last met your guild members. We sincerely wish to have a prosperous alliance with a human guild. And, I can only hope we can form a positive reputation amongst others." He nodded.
"And I'd like to extend the same to you. With your unique talents and expertise, you've given us a great chance to learn so much about you and your people."
Aranix nodded. "We shall wait until you are ready to escort us to this festival." The older Fenrir Ant left the office. Basil took a moment before throwing his arms down to catch himself, his breathing becoming labored and nervous. His eyes widened in fear, shaking as his mind raced. He felt panic in his heart, his vision blurring. He tried to steady his breath to calm down, but he was in turmoil.
"Th-this can't be. They were behind bars. How are they back? Did they escape? How? What now?" He mumbled to himself. He walked to a cabinet near the end of his office. He pulled out a large bottle of whiskey. He poured himself a glass and drank. His office door opened.
"Master? Is everything alright?" Coral asked. "The rest are getting antsy out here. Especially Fiora."
"Yeah...yeah. Give me a moment." He replied. Coral closed the door, returning to the group outside.
Basil put his hands on his desk, letting out a shaky breath. He chugged the drink down.
"My past...will always find a way to come back. Won't it...?
-Magnolia Town Square-
"I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but please, no fighting," Basil instructed, his eyes landing squarely on Fiora. "This goes for everyone." He added, his eyes never leaving Fiora's. "Am I clear?" Fiora gave him a lazy salute.
"Sir yes sir." She quipped sarcastically.
"Of course, master." Viperion said with a bow.
"I'll keep her out of trouble." Gideon promised with a wave, Zephyr running off excitedly ahead of them.
"Oh, I see Lyra, Luna, and Abe! Can I go to them?" He pleaded to Coral. Coral grinned and nodded.
"Only if you behave." She warned, playfully waving a finger. Zephyr nodded, using the Galestride technique to zoom through the crowd. Everyone could hear from the distance.
"Hey Lyra, Luna." Zephyr took a deliberate pause. He executed a dramatic bow. "Your majesty." Abe growled.
"I told you not to call me that!" He scolded, knocking Zephyr on the head. The young mage rubbed his head.
"Wha? It's what you are." He stated in confusion.
Lyra smiled, giggling slightly.
"You're looking to have fun aren't you? So, what did you want to do first, Zeph?" she asked with a playful grin. Abe huffed, grabbing Zephyr by the top of his head.
"I got him Coral. Go have fun!" He called out. He dragged him through the crowd, along with the star weavers. Coral waved to him.
"Is it me or has Abe changed a little." She said thoughtfully. Basil nodded, smiling.
"It seems so. I'm happy he confided in us." He mused. Caspian craned his neck, his amber eyes wide with wonder as he took in the bustling square. The vibrant colors, the joyous music, and the enticing aromas of food stalls filled him with a sense of wonder. "This…this is truly extraordinary," he murmured, his voice barely audible above the din.
Aranix, however, remained stoic, his gaze flitting over the crowd with a detached curiosity. "It's disorganized and chaotic," he remarked, his tone disapproving. "But I suppose there's a certain…energy to it." He paused, his antennae twitching as he caught a whiff of something sweet and savory. "What is that aroma? It's…intriguing."
Basil chuckled softly. "That's the smell of freedom, Aranix," he replied, his voice laced with a hint of pride. "Magnolia Town loves a good festival, and this one is for celebrating the return of peace after the Wyvern incident."
Just then, a cheerful voice called out, "Coral! So good to see you here!"
Coral turned, a bright smile spreading across her face as she spotted Mirajane Strauss approaching, her arm linked with Elfman and Lisanna. "Mira!" she exclaimed, rushing forward to embrace the Take Over mage in a warm hug. "It's good to see you all! What brings you to the festival today?"
"Well," Mirajane replied, her smile equally radiant, "Magnolia Town knows how to throw a good party, and we wouldn't miss it for the world. Though," she added, her voice softening slightly, "it's not quite the same without the others." Her gaze flickered towards the guild hall, a hint of longing in her eyes.
Coral's brow furrowed in concern. "They're still away on that long journey, aren't they?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. "I hope they're being careful."
Elfman, ever the boisterous one, puffed out his chest and flexed a bicep. "Don't you worry, Coral," he boomed. "Natsu's got this! He's a real man, after all!"
Lisanna giggled, a playful glint in her eye. "Elfman, you're always so confident in Natsu. But I'm sure he's doing just fine. He's with Erza and the others, after all." She then turned her attention to Viperion, her curiosity piqued. "Wow, she's pretty!" she exclaimed, walking toward her and leaning closer to examine Viperion's unique hairstyle. "Is that how you always wear your hair?"
Viperion, taken aback by the attention, blushed and instinctively reached up to touch her antennae. "Th-thank you. That's the first time has complimented my hair." she said with a flushing smile.
"It's really pretty!" Lisanna gushed, her eyes sparkling with admiration. "It looks so unique and elegant. I've never seen anything like it."
Elfman, his usual boisterous confidence faltering in the face of Viperion's beauty, mumbled, "Yeah...she's a real knockout. Strong and beautiful. A real man's dream."
Before Coral could respond, a wave of cheers erupted from the nearby crowd. A sea of banners bearing the words "Antenna Goddess Fan Club" surged toward them, parting the festival-goers like a tidal wave. Dozens of men, their eyes alight with fervent admiration, chanted: "Goddess! Goddess! Goddess!"
Viperion's eyes widened in alarm. She instinctively took a step back, her antennae twitching nervously.
Caspian and Aranix looked at each other with bewilderment.
Basil let out a nervous chuckle, adjusting his glasses. "Um, well, it seems Viperion has quite the... following."
The chanting intensified, the crowd now a swirling vortex of adoration focused solely on Viperion. At the front of the throng, a man with a meticulously groomed mustache and a banner proclaiming "President - Davian Mohallan" beamed with pride.
"Behold, the Goddess!" he declared, gesturing towards Viperion with a theatrical flourish. "She who graced us with her presence during the Wyvern crisis! She defended our town with her unmatched beauty and elegance! She who..." He paused, his eyes misting over with emotion, "… wears those antennae like a crown of celestial glory!"
The crowd erupted into a thunderous applause, their cheers echoing through the square. Viperion, overwhelmed by the attention, shrunk back, seeking refuge behind Caspian and Aranix.
Mirajane, however, watched the spectacle with a mix of amusement and a seasoned mage's understanding. "Looks like someone's become quite famous," she said, a knowing smile gracing her lips. "Maybe you should give them a wave, Viperion. They seem quite devoted."
Coral, sensing Viperion's discomfort, patted her on the back reassuringly. "Don't worry, Vi," she whispered, her voice gentle. "They're harmless. Just a bunch of admirers who appreciate your unique…style."
Viperion, her blush deepening, offered a hesitant wave to the cheering crowd. The Antenna Goddess Fan Club roared their approval, their devotion unwavering as they continued to shower her with praise.
Caspian leaned in close to Aranix, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Seems like human males have a particular fondness for antennae," he whispered, barely containing a chuckle.
Aranix, his expression a mask of disapproval, simply muttered under his breath, "Humans... so easily distracted by superficialities."
"YOU GUYS AGAIN?!" screamed Fiora as jumped in front of Viperion. She lit herself on fire. "WHAT DID I TELL YOU LAST TIME?!"
The group turned in horror.
"It's the Demoness! She's come to deprive us of the Antenna Goddess. Quick! Chant her name to protect her!" Yelled Davian.
"Vi-per-ion!"
Fiora raged like a wildfire, causing the group to panic.
"Quick! Back to meeting place theta!" Davian yelled. The group dispersed like mice, some falling over others. Viperion approached Fiora.
"Thank you, Fiora-san. You're always looking out for me." Fiora sighed loudly and shook her head.
"You're lucky I was here, Vi." She put an arm around her shoulder. "What did I tell you to do the next time you saw them?" She quizzed. Viperion tapped her fingers together.
"You beat them all up." She recited.
"Hell yeah you do! You smash their faces in till the pervert falls out of 'em! These losers deserve it!" She yelled.
Basil cleared his throat. "Fi?"
"WHAT?!... Ahem, I didn't fight. You saw!" She retorted. Basil sighed.
"As I suspected. I do hope that this doesn't cause an issue later. But I'm sure they've learned their lesson." He replied calmly.
"Fiora?! Master Basil?! It's great to see you all out here!" Tiffy shouted hopping over. She was in her human form, followed by Ewan.
"Yo. Fancy seeing you all out here?" He greeted.
"Ewan-senpai? We haven't seen you for a few weeks." Gideon expressed. Ewan scratched the back of his head sheepishly.
"Yeah, I got wrapped up in some research the old man found for me." He admitted.
"He wouldn't come out of his room for anything. I had to pull him by the ear for him to take a shower." Tiffy informed them.
"You didn't need to say that!" Ewan whined.
"Then don't embarrass me!" She shot back.
Zephyr appeared, walking with Abe, Lyra, and Luna.
"Hey, everyone's here. Been a while." Abe pointed out. Lyra nodded.
"We've all been so busy with quests I've almost forgotten what it was like to all be at the same place." Lyra added. Coral wave Mirajane off.
"I'll keep in touch, Mira!" She bid her farewell.
"You too! I'm sure we'll meet again sometime." Mirajane said before returning with her brother and sister. Coral returned to the group. She stopped upon seeing Lyra next to Abernathy.
"Oh my. Lyra, is that where you've been all this time? Next to Abe?" she teased.
"N-no way!" She stammered as her cheeks turned red. "I was making sure he didn't escape and go take a nap behind a stall or something. Tell them, Luna!" Luna merely shrugged as if saying, 'What can I say?' Abe folded his arms and snorted.
"I'd never do that. The nap would be more enjoyable than this noisy festival anyway. Plus, I couldn't leave you three to the mercy of these people. I know Fiora well enough to expect a fight and poor Gideon would be apologizing profusely to the crowd of people she just annihilated." He said before noticing Lyra glaring at him. "W-what?!... It was a joke..."
The laughter and banter swirled around Basil, yet it seemed to reach him from a distance, muffled as though underwater. His gaze drifted across the faces of his guild members – Fiora's fiery defiance, Gideon's quiet strength, Abernathy's playful facade, Lyra and Luna's tentative reconciliation, Zephyr's boundless energy, Viperion's innocent wonder, Coral's unwavering loyalty, even Ewan's focused intensity and Tiffy's boundless cheer. A bittersweet ache settled in his chest.
They were his family, the ones he'd vowed to protect. But the shadows of his past, of the Shadowvein Covenant and its twisted legacy, loomed large. The carefree joy of the festival felt like a fragile illusion, a temporary respite before the inevitable storm. His smile, usually so warm and genuine, faltered, his hand unconsciously clenching into a fist.
How long can I shield them? he wondered, a tremor running through him that had nothing to do with the ground. How long before my past comes back to shatter the peace I've built?
"-aster Basil. Master Basil?" Luna's voice, a gentle ripple against the chaotic current, pulled him back to the present. "Are you alright?"
He blinked, forcing his usual smile back into place. "Hmm? Oh, why yes," he said, his voice a touch too bright. "I was simply… lost in thought. It seems we should show our esteemed guests all the wonders of a human festival. Such opportunities are rare, after all."
"-aster Basil. Master Basil?" Luna asked. "Are you alright?"
"Hmm? Oh why yes. I was thinking we should all go together and show our esteemed guest all the human things to do. Festivals like these only come around once every so often." He responded. Zephyr's face dropped into a frown.
"But Sylph isn't back. She's still resting from our fight with the Wyverns. So... we're not all together yet." He sulked. Ewan ruffled Zephyr's hair.
"Like Coral told us, she said she would be back. She wouldn't leave you hanging. Besides, you think she would want you to be bummed out like this." He countered. Zephyr straightened up.
"You're right, Ewan-san! I shouldn't dwell on it and just enjoy the festivities. Did you make any interesting discoveries recently?" he asked him, stars in his eyes. Tiffy rolled her eyes and sighed.
"You sound just like him when you're talking about discovery and the unknown. I guess I can see why the two of you get on so well." The Lupicyn crossed her arms.
"Are people talking about me?" Sylph said fluttering up, sunglasses on and a sun hat, wore a sundress and sandals. Zephyr went and hugged her tightly.
"Sylph!" He cheered, tears welling up. "You're back! And you got a tan?! Wait... Have you been back this whole time?!" He yelled outraged. "Doing whatever without telling me! You're terrible!"
Sylph blushed, patting Zephyr on the head, who nuzzled into her touch.
"I needed time to think. And by that I meant after the stress you put me through, I took a much needed elemental spirit vacation. However, I did get you a souvenir." She said. She pulled a green studded earring. Coral gasped.
"Sylph! What are you trying to teach him?" She scolded.
"It's not going IN his ear. It's going to clip on. I figured that while we're not fighting, we can slowly collect Ethernano in it. And Zeph's gonna get to train with a badass spirit! No need to thank me~"
Zephyr's eyes watered.
"No... thank you. Thank you, Sylph!" He shouted grabbing her into a hug again. "I missed you so much!"
"O-of course... Me... too. Missed you." She said with difficulty as she hugged him back, the force of their hug strong enough to shake them both. After a short time, she pulled apart.
"I don't want to ruin a touching reunion, but now that the whole guild is together again, let's party!" Basil declared. He placed a hand on his hip.
"Everyone together, follow me!" He led them all to a table set in the middle of a large festival area.
The festival swirled around the Emerald Oasis guild, a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and delicious aromas. Laughter echoed through the air, mingling with the lively strains of music and the excited chatter of the crowd.
Fiora, her initial annoyance at Caspian's marriage proposal quickly forgotten, found herself captivated by the festival's energy. She relished the competitive games, her Blazing Soul flames crackling with delight as she demolished the competition in a strength test, sending a poor, unsuspecting challenger flying across the plaza. Gideon, ever her steadfast companion, stood nearby, chuckling as he shook his head.
Zephyr, finally free from Coral's watchful eye, and the looming threat of bathroom duty, zipped through the crowd like a whirlwind, Sylph perched on his shoulder with a mischievous glint in her eyes. They sampled every sugary treat imaginable, leaving a trail of sticky fingerprints and delighted giggles in their wake.
Lyra and Luna, their sisterly bond solidified by their recent victory, strolled arm-in-arm, their gazes lingering on stalls filled with shimmering fabrics and glowing crystals. The allure of beautiful things transcended species, it seemed.
Abernathy, true to form, managed to find a shady spot beneath a giant oak tree, where he proceeded to doze peacefully, his snores a gentle counterpoint to the festival's lively rhythm.
Coral, ever the social butterfly, flitted between conversations, her warm laughter ringing out as she shared stories and insights with fellow mages and townsfolk alike. She found a kindred spirit in Mirajane, their shared understanding of magic and family creating an instant bond.
Aranix, however, remained a stoic observer, his amber eyes scrutinizing the human customs with a mix of curiosity and disapproval. The sheer volume of noise and seemingly pointless activities grated against his refined sensibilities. He found himself inexplicably drawn to the flower stalls, the vibrant colors and delicate scents a welcome respite from the surrounding chaos. He even, much to Caspian's amusement, purchased a small bouquet of lavender, its calming aroma a soothing balm against the sensory overload.
Caspian, on the other hand, embraced the festival with unrestrained enthusiasm. He sampled every culinary creation, his antennae twitching with delight at the unexpected flavors. He attempted to impress Fiora with his newfound knowledge of human customs, showering her with compliments and awkwardly attempting to engage her in a spirited debate about the merits of spicy versus sweet foods.
"These 'takoyaki' are truly delightful," he declared, offering a skewer to Fiora. "The octopus is cooked to perfection, and the sauce has a delightful tangy sweetness."
Fiora, her arms crossed and a skeptical frown on her face, eyed the skewer with suspicion. "Octopus? You expect me to eat that?" she retorted. "I'd rather stick to my barbecue. At least I know what I'm getting."
Undeterred, Caspian pressed on. "But you haven't even tried it!" he insisted. "It's a culinary masterpiece, a symphony of flavors and textures." He took a dramatic bite, closing his eyes as he savored the taste. "Exquisite! A true testament to human ingenuity."
Fiora rolled her eyes. "You're such a weirdo, bug boy," she muttered, but a flicker of amusement touched her lips as she watched his over-the-top enthusiasm.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the square, the festival's energy shifted. The lively tunes of the marching band gave way to a more romantic melody. Couples twirled and swayed on the makeshift dance floor, their laughter echoing softly against the backdrop of twinkling lights.
Viperion, her gaze fixed on Gideon who was trying his best to teach Aranix how to play darts, felt a tug in her heart. This new sensation, a mix of warmth and longing, puzzled her. She had witnessed humans engaging in this activity on numerous occasions, but she had never fully understood its appeal. But now, seeing Gideon laughing with his guildmates, she felt a surge of desire to share in that joy.
"G-Gideon-san," she stammered, her antennae twitching nervously. "W-would you... Would you like to dance?" Gideon paused.
"You want to dance with m-me?" He asked. She nodded. "I... I've never danced before." He admitted quietly. "I-I probably won't be very good." Viperion gently took his hand.
"That's okay," she assured him. "Me neither. But, we can learn together. That's... That's part of what this guild means to me, ya know? Learning."
Viperion gently tugged Gideon toward the dancing couples. "Let's just... Follow their lead. I think. I hope."
Gideon froze. "Wha- what are you doing?!" He yelped as Viperion grabbed his hand, pulling him along with surprising strength.
"Learning to dance," Viperion replied matter-of-factly, her antennae bobbing with enthusiasm. She pulled him close, her grip firm but her touch surprisingly gentle. "Here, put your hand on my waist."
Gideon hesitated, his cheeks flushing crimson as he felt the warmth of her skin beneath his fingertips. What am I doing? He wondered, his mind a whirlwind of confusion. I don't even know how to dance. And what if Fiora sees…?
He glanced over, his heart sinking as he spotted Fiora watching them, a scowl etched on her face. Her hand, usually ablaze with fiery orange, was clenched into a fist, sparks of crimson flickering menacingly. Beside her, Caspian was oblivious to the tension, humming along to the music with an eager grin.
Viperion, unaware of the turmoil brewing within him, pulled him closer. "Come on, just follow my lead." She began swaying gently to the music, her movements surprisingly graceful for someone with such a unique physique. Gideon, however, stumbled over his own feet, nearly tripping over her.
"Sorry, sorry," he mumbled, his voice a flustered whisper.
Viperion giggled softly. "It's okay," she assured him. "It takes practice. You'll get the hang of it."
As the couples around them twirled and dipped, Viperion and Gideon's dance was more of a series of awkward shuffles and near collisions. He stepped on her toes more times than he could count, his face burning with embarrassment each time.
"Ow," she winced, a faint frown creasing her brow.
"Sorry!" Gideon exclaimed, his voice laced with panic. "I... I told you I wasn't very good."
"It's okay, really," she reassured him, her smile returning. "I'm not exactly a natural dancer myself."
They paused for a moment, catching their breath, and their gazes met. Gideon felt a warmth spread through him, a strange mix of comfort and anticipation. Viperion's eyes, usually filled with a childlike curiosity, held a softer light, a spark of something he didn't quite understand. He was about to say something, to break the silence, when Fiora's voice cut through the air, sharp and filled with mocking laughter.
"Looks like someone needs a lesson in how to move those feet!" she called out, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Gideon's heart sank.
Fiora grabbed Caspian's hand and yanked him towards the center of the dance floor. "Come on, bug boy," she challenged, her emerald eyes blazing with a competitive fire. "Let's show them how a real couple dances."
She twirled, her red hair swirling like a fiery halo, her movements a graceful blend of strength and precision. Caspian, clearly outmatched, stumbled over his own feet, a bewildered expression on his face as he struggled to keep up.
Gideon watched them, his stomach twisting with a knot of jealousy he couldn't quite explain. His gaze flickered back to Viperion, who was watching the spectacle with wide eyes. For a fleeting moment, their gazes met, and a spark of unspoken understanding passed between them. Gideon felt his heart skip a beat.
Viperion let out a sigh, her antennae drooping slightly. "They make it look easy."
"I... I'm sorry." He apologized. "I can't seem to catch on. Here." he said. He took her hand and led her away from the crown and music. Fiora looked over Caspian's shoulder and watched them go.
"I can see where you attention lies." Caspian stated. Fiora's head snapped towards him.
"Huh!? What are you talking about?!" She snapped.
"The other male. Your friend." He clarified.
"Gideon?! Mole man?! Psh! He can't dance to save his life. I'd be surprised if he's made it this far." She denied.
"I may not be of the same species, but some things are universal. Like jealousy. Why else would you have reacted in such a way to my proposal? Though you made it clear then that your answer is a no." Caspian explained. Fiora blushed.
"Th-that's because it is! It has nothing to do with him! It's... it's..." She stammered. Caspian twirled her to the beat of the music and dipped her, showcasing his moves. He lifted her back into another spin.
"You're so fiery when it comes to things that matter to you. Does he not matter?" He questioned. Fiora's face was bright red.
"Of course he does! Gideon is one of my closest friends. I've known him forever, and I... I can't lose him." she admitted. She let Caspian's hands go and ran off.
Caspian watched her go. "Fiora is like the flames that lick at the earth. So warm and passionate, but a force to be reckoned with should she be provoked." Aranix approached, his eyes scanning the fading visage of the fire mage.
"I'm sure you knew from the start, and yet you still tried to romance her." Aranix pointed out. Caspian chuckled.
"Yes. In hindsight, it was quite foolish. Though, there is still hope for me yet. Perhaps a human could win her heart. Her and her guild have proven to be strong and capable allies. But, as a warrior, that doesn't mean I have given up. If anything, it gives me a goal to strive for. To win a human's love." Caspian said, his eyes gleaming with a mix of determination and amusement.
"Come along. It's nearly time to return to Queen Calypso. The evening is ending. It's a shame, it was quite entertaining to say the least. Even though, I only saw half of it." Aranix commented.
"Oh? Did you admit you liked human customs? What would the others think of that?" Caspian teased.
"They wouldn't. Because they would hear nothing of the sort. The only one who hears this is you." Aranix ordered. Caspian chuckled.
"Of course, captain. My lips are sealed." He promised.
Gideon had pulled Viperion along, a look of determination on his face. He stopped near a fountain.
"Gideon-san. Are you alright?" She asked.
"Yeah. I... I wanted to ask you something important. Something that's been on my mind." He replied. "It's about the dance."
"What is it?" She asked. He took a deep breath.
"I... I want to ask you to teach me." He stated. Viperion tilted her head to the side.
"But, I already have. Haven't I?" She queried.
"N-no. Not that. I want to ask you to be my dance partner."
"Y-you... what?" She stuttered, her antennae quivering in shock.
"I... I'm not very good at dancing. You've seen that. I'm a mess. But, I want to learn. Everyone around me is getting stronger and better at something. And I feel like I'm being left behind. So, I want to ask you, as my guildmate and friend, to help me grow stronger, and to teach me how to dance." Gideon explained.
"Gideon-san..." Viperion murmured, her voice trembling with emotion. "Of course. I'll teach you, as well as anyone else from our guild. I don't think you're weak. You're one of the strongest people I know." She smiled warmly, her eyes shining with admiration.
"T-thank you. I... I appreciate it. I promise, I won't let you down." Gideon said, a relieved smile breaking out across his face.
"You've never let me down, Gideon-san." Viperion grabbed his hand. "I'm not sure if you remember, but... You're the reason I wanted to join this guild."
Gideon's eyes widened in surprise. "R-really?"
"Yes. I was taught that strength could only be one way. That you had to fight and can never lose. But when you, Fiora-san, Luna-san, And Abernathy-san came to our nest, you all had a look of determination that I've never seen. Even when you fought me, you didn't fight back. You were so adamant in trying to help me see that as a Fenrir Ant, I'm whatever I want to be.
"I would not expect much to come from my life. I am a Fenrir Ant who looks human. I could live in the city, but my instincts and desire to fight will always be present. No amount of change could fix that." She responded. Gideon reached up and tried to move the needles away with his dangling hand.
"You may not be able to change it completely, but you can learn to control it. There are people you can talk to that'll help. It may not seem like it, but not all of humanity is the same. I joined Emerald Oasis Guild to be the change I want to see in the world, to protect everyone, not just humans. You Fenrir Ants aren't evil, you just want to live."
"In the end, I was grateful for that. It's why I wanted to join. Now, I can finally be the Fenrir Ant I want to be." She finished. Gideon patted her cheek and looked down at her with a smile.
"I'm happy you joined. You are an amazing person and a great fighter. You are part of Emerald Oasis, and I'll be here to support you, and I know everyone else will too." He assured her.
"Thank you, Gideon-san... Do you think we could dance a little more, here?" She asked.
"I-I'd like that." He agreed. They started to dance, their movements clumsy and uncertain. Viperion giggled softly.
"Why are you laughing?" He asked.
"I'm not laughing at you, I promise. It's just... interesting to see how we've gone from enemies to... something much more." Viperion replied.
Gideon nodded, his cheeks flushed pink. "I'm glad we did. I never thought I'd find a friend like you, Viperion."
Viperion's eyes sparkled with happiness. "Thank you, Gideon-san."
Darkness. To most, it is an ally. But even those who thrive in the dark can learn to fear it. The most frightening darkness often comes from within.
Sounds of screeching could be heard. Test tubes and equipment surrounded a single Fenrir Ant. It writhed and squirmed, trying to find a way back to its nest. But there was no escape.
"Subject 2,538. Shows the most promise to far. I've elicited different responses from her, compared to the other subjects. This could be the one. I need more time."
The subject's antennae twitched as her vision went white.
"Interesting. Subject 2,538 has developed a form of magic. That is another checkmark. Five different elements? You could rival God Serena at this rate. If only you weren't a pest."
The ant's vision returned to normal as her body twitched and convulsed.
"Her magic is nothing like her peers. I've never seen a Fenrir Ant be able to control the elements as well as this one. Maybe she could be useful for what I have planned. A few more tests, and I'll have built the perfect specimen of evolution. You will be my greatest creation!"
The ant screeched, as her body shifted and twisted, slowly becoming human. She had short black hair and gray eyes. Her body was toned and voluptuous. She coughed, finally able to breathe air properly.
"And another check. Achieved human form without royal jelly. Eager to prove yourself worthy, aren't you?"
"Ugh... What? Where... Am I?" She questioned.
"Your new home, my dear. You shall serve me for the rest of your life. Consider it a gift of gratitude for helping me achieve the pinnacle of evolution. You will be the ultimate queen... Hmm. I guess at this point calling you Subject 2538 would be cumbersome. Very well, I shall give you a name. How about... Isis. Yes, that will do."
"My name... is... Isis." She said.
"Yes. And I am your master. You belong to me."
Isis' antennae twitched as she sat up. "Master..." She repeated, her voice a hollow echo.
The man smirked. "Good girl. Now, let us begin the next phase of your training. You will command the ultimate army, one that will bow before you. And you will lead them to victory, as the queen they so desperately need."
"Queen." she echoed. "I will be their queen. I will lead them to victory."
The scientist grin turned twisted, memories of his past resurfacing. Boundless freedom to research as he pleased once more. "Good girl. You're learning. Just wait till they see you. They will worship you."
Isis' antennae twitched, her eyes clouding over as she stared blankly ahead. "Yes, master."
