Kitsuna stood outside, just around the corner of the main door. She lit a cigarette and took a drag, headphones blaring in her ears. That rocky ride had agitated her nostalgia in the worst way. She tried to shake the memories, focusing on her first game instead. She tried to, anyway, but a series of screams from inside echoed even over her music. She put out her smoke, ripped the headphones off, and tore into the building.
"Would y'all shut the hell up!," she shouted at the four boys in the hallway. She was louder than them, and got the first round of Daichi's ire.
"What were you doin' outside?," the captain finally asked at the end of his rant. Kitsuna clammed up and froze. There wasn't a single safe answer here, so she was stuck.
"Fresh air?"
"Don't give me that, you reek of smoke! I can't believe you! Where're you keepin' 'em! Empty your pockets!," Daichi commanded.
"What? Piss off," she argued, but did as ordered when he took a singular step forward. There weren't any cigarettes, but there was a lighter. He snapped it up, and dragged her to the room where everyone was sleeping. They hadn't fully settled in yet, and scrambled to the edges of the room when they spotted their peeved captain.
"What's goin' on?," Tadashi asked finally. Daichi grabbed her bag, and dumped it out. The other four made it up just in time to see her kneeling in front of him. The incriminating items laying neatly between the two. A half-empty pack of cigarettes, and a lighter. There was a second lighter, too. One that Daichi found in Suga's bag. Both of them stared at the floor, and the other guys didn't know where to even start.
"They're Keishin's?," Kitsuna eventually tried that excuse again, her voice barely a squeak.
"Mhm. Kitsuna. Sugawara," Daichi used his final power move, emphasizing each syllable. The two flinched, fully expecting a full-blown smack down.
"Yes, sir!," they both shouted.
"You're runnin' extra laps tomorrow. You're lucky nobody else found out," Daichi snapped up the items and left the room.
"That doesn't mean waking up extra early, does it?," Kitsuna asked. She almost pleaded, hoping that wasn't the case.
"We both know it does. Maybe he'll at least let us sleep til breakfast?," Suga shared her sentiment. The door slammed shut, and they jumped as if they'd seen a ghost.
"Six. Sharp."
That was the end of it, and everyone climbed into their futons for the night. Kitsuna's was positioned somewhat off to the side, against the wall. She tried to sleep, but rolled over and was greeted with the light of a phone screen pointed straight at her eyes.
"Dude. Go the fuck to sleep," she groaned. Then her eyes adjusted and she saw Suga scribbling down on a paper.
"Sorry, did I wake you up? I'm almost done," Suga whispered, not even looking up from his work. Kitsuna rolled closer, squinting at the paper trying to see without her glasses.
"Whatcha workin' on? More signals?," Kitsuna asked. She startled Suga, but he launched into an explanation to hide that. At least she didn't notice his face in the poor light. She ended up dozing off while he talked, in an unfortunately close position.
"Am I that boring?," Suga pouted, pushing his phone away along with the notebook.
"Sor'y. Not…'night," Kitsuna mumbled out, apparently still half awake. She pushed herself away a little, then was completely out. Suga went not long after, jolted awake by Daichi's alarm before the sun rose.
"Get up," Daichi growled. He yawned, forcing himself out of bed and tiptoeing around the others. He stopped dead, Suga staring up at him with a frightened expression. Kitsuna had moved around in her sleep, now half using Suga as a pillow. Or a punching bag, more like. Daichi sighed, suddenly remembering many nights' sleep lost to her violent slumber fits.
"Kitsuna. Wake up," he knelt down, gently slapping her cheek until she grumbled back at him.
"Get. Up! Poor Suga's gonna die if you don't move," Daichi flicked her nose. That pissed her off, and she shot up to a sitting position. He placed a hand over her face, holding a finger over his lips to signal her to keep quiet.
"Hm? Suga?," she squinted around, not following at all. She got up anyway, and sidled her way out of the room to get dressed.
"Suga. Get up," Daichi prodded his frozen friend. His reaction was funny, but not enough to convince Daichi to let up on their punishment. He pinched Suga's cheek as he thought that, and the other boy finally snapped to attention.
They met up outside, all yawning as the sun rose over the mountain. Daichi was the loudest, despite getting the most sleep out of the three.
"Get movin'. I wanna be done before breakfast is ready, so we can wash up," Daichi smacked their backs, somewhat gently.
"Daichi, do we really gotta?," Kitsuna whined.
"If you've got energy to complain you've got energy to burn. Get stretchin'," the captain growled at her. Suga was well aware by now that forcing Daichi to wake up early was a sure way to get a good smack.
"Tch. Whatever. Why's he out here, though? Could've let him rest," Kitsuna asked, slowly gaining consciousness as she started moving around.
"He's here," Daichi patted Suga's shoulder, "because he knew and kept quiet. And even had a lighter on him. So either he's started."
Suga shook his head violently, keeping weirdly silent the whole morning.
"Or he was supporting your shit habit," Daichi struck the nail on the head, shutting Kitsuna up as well. Once he was satisfied with their warmups, he had them line up on the road. They were going to be heading uphill at first, looping back around and stopping where they started.
"Ready, go!"
And they took off, with Kitsuna losing steam on the uphill climb. Suga stopped with her and they doubled over, wheezing.
"We can take a break here, right?"
The question was met with silence. Kitsuna felt a wave of dread, for the first time ever being worried that Suga was actually mad at her. She was used to it from Daichi, but if she actually managed to piss off Mr. Sunshine it was one hundred percent over for her.
"Hey. Uh. I'm sorry. Really. I won't make you buy breakfast anymore! Suga?"
"Huh? Well that's a relief for my wallet at least," he laughed. He studied her face, confused by her sudden outburst. Maybe the running was really getting to her, or some kind of withdrawal symptoms?
"Hey. Don't worry about it. I knew it would make him mad," Suga patted her back. They stood up, taking a deep breath to steady themselves, then took off with a jog the rest of the way up the hill. They made it back down and were immediately sent back around. Repeating that until the sun was climbing higher, and the heat started to set in.
"Alright. Go clean up," Daichi released them finally, and Kitsuna dunked her head in the stream of water from a large sink. She stayed like that for several minutes, earning a weak laugh from the other two.
"Food?," the girl stood up, staggering from side to side. She let the water drip from her hair, and it soaked her shirt. Daichi led them inside, half-carrying Kitsuna. Suga sat down with her in a chair, and Daichi bought them drinks from the vending machine. Kitsuna's color slowly came back, and she tried to wring out her hair before shaking her head and tucking the fringe behind her ear. Kiyoko arrived just then, and stalled when she spotted the trio.
"Shimizuuuu!"
Suga and Kitsuna called out to her in a manner rivaling Tanaka's and Noya's swooning. Daichi smacked them both, and dragged them back to the room. Kiyoko joined Takeda in the kitchen, making a simple breakfast in large portions. Yachi wasn't present, not having the permission form signed before it was time to go.
"Dude, are they dead?," Noya freaked out when Daichi dropped his two victims in the middle of the floor. Both groaned, and had only a moment's peace before everyone else was woken up and sent to get dressed for the day.
"Why the hell are you wet?," Tadashi asked. He received no answer, and everyone got seriously concerned at that. Daichi wouldn't let anyone try to help them, though, so they just laid there doing their best impression of opossums.
