"We got the day right, didn't we?," Asahi asked. He was standing outside Kitsuna's house, with Daichi and Sugawara. But there was no Kitsuna present, and no sign of life inside. There were some sort of workers milling about who barely acknowledged the boys' presence. Daichi pulled out his phone to double check the time, and to call her. They heard a ringtone from behind them suddenly and all spun around.
"Sorry! I," Kitsuna doubled over, panting hard with her phone in her hand. "I forgot to tell you. Heat's busted, they're doing an inspection today. Um."
"Huh? Well, that's not great," Asahi responded first.
"Where did you just run from?," Daichi spoke up next, with a question.
"Doesn't matter. Uh, about today," Kitsuna stood back up straight. She was still out of breath though, struggling with the much colder air.
"We can just go to my place, I guess," Suga offered. They agreed to go with that, and headed out after Kitsuna spoke with the maintenance crew for a minute. Daichi and Asahi noticed that the movements of the other two got more and more tense as they got closer to the Sugawara residence.
"Just open the door, it's cold! I'm sure it'll be fine," Kitsuna whispered to Suga, who was hesitating with his hand on the doorknob.
"I know! Just..give me a minute," Suga hissed back. Kitsuna rammed her hand under his scarf, and he yelped when the cold fingertips touched his neck.
"Come on! You're makin' this weirder than it actually is," she prodded him on again.
"Right, they're gonna think something is definitely up now. But-"
"Wanna share with the class?," Daichi's tone was hard like the icy patches on the ground. That gave just enough push for Suga to open the door and everyone to head into the entrance area.
"Koshi? I thought you were going over to-oh! Kitsuna!," Sugawara's mom was sure enough right there to greet them. Suga's face tensed up, and Kitsuna tried to signal discreetly for her to stop being so friendly for now.
"Oh, you've got two more. Change of plans?," Mrs. Sugawara switched gears a little slowly. Everyone settled around the table in the living room, shedding their coats and bags. The boys started studying, while Kitsuna looked through some of their old notebooks. The information in each one was slightly different at certain parts, with Suga's being the most detailed.
"Kitsuna, you left some clothes here last time. They're on top of the dryer!"
"Oh, I thought you didn't actually study much. Poor Koshi almost lost it over the last test scores."
"Can you go tell Koda to get ready for dinner?"
Mrs. Sugawara was already used to Kitsuna showing up at random, and ended up relying on her for different things out of habit. Suga reminded her that the girl was trying to do something, so his mom relented a little bit. Kitsuna asked for an explanation on something that didn't line up between the different sets of notes. Suga started explaining it, and Kitsuna drifted off a little bit. Mrs. Sugawara brought over a hot cup of coffee, perking her back up.
"Alright," Asahi was nearing his limits. He and Daichi were trying to ignore the familiarity between everyone, but it was starting to get to them. Not only did they feel like outsiders somehow, but Kitsuna was almost too comfortable.
"Who's house is this again? Yours, or hers," Daichi and the others all looked toward the end of the table. Kitsuna was talking with Suga's mom, and looked right at home.
"Sorry," Suga growled, feeling the most on edge right now. He stood up and pulled his mom aside, having a hushed argument with her. Kitsuna looked over her shoulder at them for a minute, then shrugged and turned back to the notes.
"You can stop staring any time," Kitsuna finally acknowledged the looks she was getting from Daichi and Asahi. She didn't look up from what she was reading at all, but they knew she was getting annoyed.
"Sorry," Asahi apologized as Suga returned to the table.
"How often are you here?," Daichi asked after a few more minutes. Kitsuna choked on her drink, suddenly realizing just what she had done. Suga tensed up and tried to pretend he didn't hear it, with Kitsuna attempting the same.
"Guys. You're making it worse by acting like that," Asahi mumbled.
"Suga, Kitsuna. You can't just ignore me forev-"
"Kitsuna! Whatcha doin? You never look that serious about studying," Suga's little brother ran up and hugged her neck from behind. Kitsuna jumped at the sudden contact, losing her hold on the coffee mug. In an instant, Suga tried to catch it, Kitsuna leaned back so Koda didn't get caught in the splash zone, and the cup tipped over spilling the steaming hot liquid all over her lap and shirt. There was a brief period of silence, before everything went nuts.
"Sorry!," Koda panicked and apologized.
"Fuc-It's fine!," Kitsuna jumped up, pulling her clothes away from her skin. It was probably too late to prevent a burn entirely though. Suga placed the mug hard on the table, where it fell back over, and shook his hand where some extra coffee spilled. After a few minutes the panic died down and everything was sorted out. Kitsuna wore some spare clothes, for the second time borrowing from Suga's closet. The table was cleaned up and any potential burns were tended to. The boys were finally able to start studying for real, but every so often they'd steal glances at Kitsuna. She was trying to focus like earlier, but her face told them all that she was really feeling flustered now. So flustered that she yelped and kicked the table when an alarm on her phone went off. She grabbed her stuff in a hurry and left, leaving the others to their studying.
"Uh," Suga started up, trying to think of something to say about all that. Daichi just laughed, somehow setting everyone else more on edge.
"Sorry. I guess it's been a while so I forgot, but she's got a knack for just blending into another family like that," Daichi was laughing so hard he was tearing up. Suga laughed nervously along with him, while Asahi and Suga's mom instinctively kept quiet.
