"Dude it's really fuckin' cold. You didn't have anything?," Kitsuna whined. She trudged along behind Sugawara, through the snow-lined streets. They passed several shops, and some street food stands whose smells were making Kitsuna even more painfully aware of her hunger.
"Suga," she tugged weakly at his sleeve, sneezing when the dry breeze got to her nose.
"I know, I know. Is there anything specific you want?," he pulled her hand into his own and half-dragged her along.
"Something hot? No, that's not helpful. Something spicy?," Kitsuna rambled there beside him as he pulled her into a ramen shop that he had stopped by pretty regularly with his roommate. The food was pretty good, and cheap. He felt a little bad going that route for their first actual date in a while, but there was good reason for it.
"Oh, Sugawara! No Satou toda-oh! Who's this?," a young woman approached the pair and led them to their seats. She looked a few years older than Kitsuna, and was very openly friendly with Suga. She shrank back slightly at the split-second glare from Kitsuna as they were seated.
"R-right. I'll get you guys some drinks and come back for your order," the woman looked to Sugawara to gauge his reaction, and he wore a look that was tensely apologetic.
"She's in a few of the same classes as me. Satou-uh, my roommate. She seems to like him," Sugawara rapped his menu over the top of Kitsuna's head as he offered that explanation. She gave him a look but quickly got absorbed in the menu and all the options. Suga glanced over to catch her making a priceless expression.
"Can't decide?," he teased, though the question was a genuine one.
"There's so much stuff," she stretched out her arms over the table and slumped over it. Poor etiquette but it was charming in a way, too. She pushed up on his menu from underneath, squinting at a picture on the back.
"Wait, where'd your glasses go?," Suga just realized they were gone when she had them on earlier.
"I left them back at, uh. I forgot to grab them again," Kitsuna stumbled where she was going to say they were at home. She sat up when the waitress returned with their drinks, suddenly tense due to her overreaction earlier.
"Ready to order?," the woman pulled out a notepad and a pen. Kitsuna glanced to her partner, but he was busy with his phone and left her hanging.
"Oh, sorry! Uh, two of the usual. Sorry, Kitsuna, I'll be right back," he placed the order and dipped out the door for a moment. Kitsuna confirmed the order and sipped her drink. The waitress kept an eye on her from the kitchen, watching as the girl got progressively more anxious and irritated the longer Sugawara was gone. He really was taking a while, only getting back just as their bowls of ramen were brought out.
"Sorry, really. Oh, but it looks like food's ready," he quickly deflected Kitsuna's attention with that. She picked up the chopsticks and dug in immediately, face lighting up at the splash of flavor that burned just a little bit.
"It's good, isn't it?," Suga asked when she finished her bowl. He took her satisfied look for an answer and moved to pay for their meal. The woman who tended their table leaned over the register, lowering her voice to talk to him.
"Dude! You totally just lost me a bet with Satou!," she hissed.
"Huh? What bet?," Sugawara grumbled back.
"Uh-! Shit. Well anyway, she's definitely not what I expected. How'd you manage to tame someone like that," the woman kept sticking her nose into his business, earning one of the looks Satou had grown to expect from him.
"Well that's what you get for betting on something like that," he chided her and finished paying, then went to collect Kitsuna. They slid on their coats and left with a casual wave from Kitsuna and more polite half-bow from Suga.
"Hm, it's still a bit early," Sugawara looked up toward the darkening sky.
"Hm?"
"Was there any shopping you wanted to do before we head back?," he pointed down the street to their left, toward some of the shops they had passed by earlier.
"Well, Keishin has been bugging me to get an actual winter jacket. So maybe that?," Kitsuna blew into her hands before stuffing them deep into her pockets. She left her hand warmer in her volleyball jacket and was really missing it now that the sun was setting.
"Hm? Okay. Uh, there should be something around here," Suga pulled out his phone and found a few places to look at. They walked around a shopping district, with Kitsuna finally picking one out from a shop with more alternative clothes. She paused for a moment when the clerk asked if she wanted to wear it out, torn between the new one and the borrowed one. Suga laughed a little at her hesitation and took the borrowed one from her hand, tucking it into a bag. They wrapped that up and walked for a while, ending up in front of a large fountain.
"Hm?," Kitsuna was mid-yawn when she crashed into her partner's back. He stopped abruptly, looking hard to his left. She was momentarily drawn into just studying his profile like that, with the warm lights decorating the plaza illuminating and framing his face.
"Sorry. Uh," Suga cleared his throat and turned around to face her. He pulled the bag from her hand and sat it down on the ground at their feet, mindful of the damp spots turning to ice as night settled in. Kitsuna was even more confused by that, getting more and more suspicious as the evening went on.
"What..are you doing?," she made no attempt to hide her suspicions now, and he got visibly more nervous. She cocked one brow, giving him a scrutinizing stare.
"Sorry! Really! There is a reason for this. I-I mean, uh," he glanced to the side again. His right side now. Kitsuna tried to follow his gaze while he took a deep breath, but her cheek met some unexpected resistance.
