JON

Brooding was something he often did, during dinner he would gaze at the high table. Watching his family chatter and break bread, while he sat in the corner and sulked into his food. He would brood during his lessons, the maester often mistaking his brooding for concentration. Like he needed to concentrate, the maester, while kind, was dull. Making them constantly recite the northern houses and their words, lands and sigils. His brother Rob of course soaked everything up, like a good pup. He on the other hand lost interest a long time ago. Preferring history lessons, the art of war and logistics. The maester always told him he had a knack for the lessons and praised him for his current knowledge on the subjects. The maester often told him he could travel to oldtown and forge his links. He scoffed at the thought, him a maester. "When your chain is forged, you can serve a northern house. Maybe even serve your brother someday". The maester said, he brooded harder at the thought. Why would he serve the favoured son. The one who got everything, who had everything. He cared for his brother, truly he did. However he would prefer to strike out on his own then have a hand out from the heir to Winterfell. If he did not take the black, he would travel the seven kingdoms and sell his sword to whoever.

He was broken from his brooding when he felt a hand slap on his back. He jumped slightly and looked to his left to see a grinning rob. "Daydreaming again brother"? He huffed and looked back towards the road ahead of them. "I don't daydream Stark, I ponder" Rob nodded and nudged his horse to trott closer to Jons. The brown and black horses were now shoulder to shoulder as they travelled the frost covered road. Rob looked ahead with Jon and whistled as he gazed at the ancient wonder that was the wall. Even twenty miles from castle black you were still in the shadow of the wall. Seven hundred feet up of pure ice loomed over them like a frozen tsunami. Even after a thousand years it still stood, not even melting an inch. "You wonder what it's like, to stand on top of that thing. Do you think Uncle Benjen can see us from up there"? Jon gave a rare chuckle and shook his head. "Probably not, even if the sky was clear of clouds, we would probably just look like a line of ants".

Rob laughed and stroked his mounts neck. "Aye, I am sure we do. Just think, one day you will be the watcher on the wall brother". With that Rob trotted to the front of the column and placed himself next to his lord father. Jon frowned when he watched as lord Stark rubbed the top of Rob's head. For a while Rob had tried to get him not to join the watch, saying he would always have a place in Winterfell when he was lord Stark. Recently however he never brought it up and never tried to convince him to stay at Winterfell. Ever since he bested Rob in the yard he had no issue with him joining the watch.

He had no idea what his family would think when they learned he no longer had a desire to join the watch. He can't remember when he started to feel it, but he no longer felt the need to waste his life at the wall. He wondered if it was when he heard the guards make snarky remarks. About how it was a home for thieves or rapists, a broken down castle with no real purpose. Or when Rob no longer cared if he stayed or went, did he feel like he should stay. Just to spite Lady Stark and her precious son.

When he and Rob had turned fifteen a moon ago, Lord Stark had approached them and told them it was time for a tour of the north. It was to give Rob an understanding of the lands he would rule one day, and of course to parade him to other Lords and Ladies. Each one they had met all looked at him with greed, lust and envy. They didn't see Rob, all they saw was opportunity, wealth and position. Each lord threw a daughter at him to get into Lord Stark's favour and to increase their standing in the north. So far Lord Stark had not accepted any offers, saying he was still too young, but soon enough Rob would get his pretty bride and all that came with her.

"OPEN THE GATE"

He broke out of his bitter thoughts and looked ahead to see castle black opening its gates to welcome the party that had travelled to the northernmost part of the seven kingdoms. The giant black doors creaked open slowly and they began to trot through the courtyard. Lord Stark came to a halt at the centre of the yard and hopped off his horse. He handed his reins to a steward in black and approached an elderly white haired man. They clasped arms and embraced one another, both grinning ear to ear. Jon climbed off his horse and pulled it along with the stewards. He looked back to see Lord Stark begin his introductions. "Lord Commander Mormont, I am sure you know Lord Umber travels with me". Jeor stood up straight and looked up to the famously giant Lord Umber. Jeor nodded and held his arm out "Greatjon, always a pleasure to have you at castle black." The greatjon, who loomed over the Lord Commander, grinned before taking his arm into his own. "Good to see you Jeor, the pleasure is mine. I don't take pleasure in that swill you call ale however".

They both laughed before hugging and slapping each other on the back. "Do not fear Lord Umber, tonight we will have a small feast. I can assure you we will bring out the good ale, what little of it we have." Lord Umber rolled his head back and laughed once again, his thundering laugh echoing up to the top of the wall. Jeor shook his head and walked past the two lords and stopped before Rob. He looked down at the auburn haired youth and gave a small huff. "And who is this one lord Stark". Rob stood up straighter and looked Jeor in the eye. Lord Stark placed a hand on Rob's shoulder and smiled down at him.

"Lord Commander, this is Rob, My son and heir". Rob held out his hand, trying his best to keep eye contact with the aged commander. Lord Jeor was looking him up and down, as if he was trying to size him up. He finally grasped Rob's arm and nodded. "A pleasure, Lord Rob. Your uncle Benjen speaks fondly of you. Being the next Lord of Winterfell, I am sure you have heard that the Starks have always manned the mall for a thousand years. Given us aid more than most of the lords in the realm. I hope we can continue that tradition when you rule Winterfell". Rob smiled and released Jeors arm. "Of course Lord Commander, the night's watch will always find aid from the Starks. I do not plan to break faith when I take over from my father". Jeor smiled down at the boy before gesturing to a brother in black. "This is head steward Bowen marsh. He will show you and your men to your rooms. He will gather you all for the feast tonight".

Ned gave Jeor one last slap on the back before following Bowen up the blackened steps of castle black. Jon turned back to the stable and guided his horse into one of the stalls. He began to remove the saddle from the horse's back when he heard laughter coming from one of the other stalls. He poked his head out of the stall to see three brothers in black standing by a lit brazier. Each one held their hand over the blazing fire, trying their best to warm up. "Looks like winter has come boys." Came the snark remark from one of the brothers. The tallest of the group huffed before rubbing his hands together. "Aye, The Starks. What do they know of the real cold? They sit in their warm castle, while we freeze in the gift". The other two nodded at the man's words, Jon left the stall and turned to leave when he bumped into another brother in black. He looked up to see an elderly man snarling down at him. His eyes a dark green perring into his soul, he stroked his salt and peppered beard and huffed.

"It's rude to be eavesdropping boy, a recruit like you should know better". Jon shook his head before adjusting his black cloak. "I'm not a recruit, I travelled here with Lord Stark and Umber." The man gave a cruel grin, he looked to his brothers and gave them a nod. All of them marched over to him and looked at Jon. "Do you hear that lads, this one travels with Lord Stark. Caught him listening in on your conversation". They all laughed before one of them slapped him on the back. "What's the matter boy, don't like what we have to say". Jon pushed the man's hand away from him and snarled. "The Starks have manned the wall for a thousand years. What's your family done, breed pigs"? The other two laughed, while the man Jon had insulted looked at the elderly man and snarled. "Are you sure this isn't one of the new thieves your training Ser Alliser". The now named Alliser chuckled, "No Blick, this one here travels with the Lords, probably one of their cup beares". Jon fronted Ser Alliser after the remark and looked him in the eye. "I am no one's cup bearer, I travel with Lord Stark and my brother Rob". Ser Alliser's grin faded and his eyes hardened. "Ah I see, so you're the bastard of Winterfell. Are you coming to join us? After all the Starks have manned the wall for a thousand years". Jon grinned before moving past Ser Alliser. "Your right they have. However i am a Snow, even a Bastard wouldn't want to spend his life around a bunch of thieves and rapists". He turned to give one last grin to Alliser and his group before finally making his way into castle black.

ROB

It had been a day since he arrived at castle black. Already he felt the urge to run home back to Winterfell. Not only was it warmer, but everyone there actually showed him some respect. From the moment he got to castle black, the watchmen did not show him anything. All he got from them was glares, grunts and judgement. He knew that they took no part in the seven kingdoms or their politics, but they could at least show him some respect. He frowned when he heard more cheering coming from the yard. He stood off to the side with the master at arms and watched while his brother gained the respect he so deserved.

His father and Lord Umber had some issues to discuss with the Lord Commander. So he had sent him and Jon to practise in the yard with the new recruits. While he held his own against some of them, he had yet to best anyone of worth. His frown deepened when he saw Jon disarm a recruit and put another on his arse with a punch to the face. Some in the yard laughed, some cheered while most gave silent nods of respect to Jon.

Ser Alliser marched forward and spat on the ground near the recruit who had been put there by his brother. "For fuck sake, the two of you cant even best a fifteen year old bastard". Jon walked over and offered his hand to the recruit, who gladly took it and was lifted to his feet. Jon patted him on the back and smiled at Ser Alliser. "Come now Ser Alliser The maester at Winterfell always says there is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher". Rob's eyes nearly bulged out of his head, did Jon really just say that to Ser Alliser. The yard grew silent, except for the hushed whispers amongst the Black brothers. Soom even grinned at the words. Rob once again silently seethed when he saw the looks of respect from the men of the watch. The recruits looked at him with admiration. Where was this coming from, the Jon he knew always sulked in the corner. He was never loud or boisterous but now, he was a different person. Rob looked back to Ser Alliser to see the man looking at Jon with murder in his eyes.

"You think because you beat some recruits it means you can talk to me as an equal boy. I have swung a sword long before your whore mother birthed ye". Rob winced at the words, Jon's mother had always been a sensitive topic. Jons grey eyes hardened before a grin stretched across his face. "If that's the case Ser Alliser, you won't have any issue beating me". The men of the watch began to mutter to themselves once again, Rob watched as some even exchanged coins. No doubt a lot bet against Jon. Ser Alliser nodded before picking up the wooden sword the recruit had dropped earlier.

Ser alliser juggled it in his palm before nodding. "Very well bastard, but dont think because you're Ned Stark's son i will go easy on ye". Jon chuckled before he and Ser Alliser took their positions. Both of them circled one another, each eyeing one another up. Alliser made the first move by throwing a downward slash at Jon. Rob winced when he saw his sword clash against Jon's. The man was taller and stronger and he used that to his advantage. Jon grunted before swirling underneath Allisers sword. He got behind him and tried to swing at his side, Alliser parried and tried to hit Jons shoulder. Back and forth they clashed swords and things began to speed up. The men of the watch began to cheer and egg on the duelists. Things started to get intense and he could see Jon was struggling to keep up with Alliser. Alliser put his guard up, ready for Jons next attack. Jon planted his right foot on the ground, he feigned right but twisted his grip so his sword struck the left side of Alliser arm. The man grunted and pressed through and tried to attack Jons right. Jon spun in place, batting Alliser's sword aside and struck him square in the chest. The cheering stopped, the yard fell into a deathly silence. The only thing that could be heard were the ravens squawking near the maester's chambers. Jon huffed and looked Ser Alliser in his wide eyes. He was expecting the man to make a snide remark, but all he got was a look of shock. "H-how did you do that Snow, Who taught you that move"? Many in the yard, Rob included, were eager for the answer. He had sparred with Jon many times but had never seen him use that move. Jon gave a dry swallow before holding his arms out to his side. "No one, I just made it up. You were a tough fight Ser Alliser, I had to improvise". Ser Alliser kept his shocked gaze on Jon, he looked him up and down. That stance, the hair, the moves and the purple hue in his eyes. It was as if he was fighting…

"WHATS GOING ON HERE"

All eyes snapped up to the balcony, meeting the stoney faces of the Lord commander and Lord Stark. Behind them stood a grinning Lord Umber. They watched as the three Lords bounced down the wooden stairs and approached the centre of the yard. Jeor stood in between the two duelists and looked at Ser Alliser. "Well Ser Alliser". Alliser stood up straight and addressed the Lord Commander. "Me and Snow were just showing the recruits some moves, Lord Commander". Jeor looked towards Jon and grinned "Really now, because from the looks of it, Snow was the one doing the teaching." Many in the yard chuckled, it was drowned out however with the greatjon's booming laughter. Jeor patted Jon on the shoulder and smiled. "Well done son, not many can say they have bested Ser Alliser". Jon gave a sheepish smile before looking at the snow covered ground. "Thank you, Lord Commander". Jeor Looked to the rest of the watchmen and frowned. "Well, what you all looking at, BACK TO YOUR DUTIES". With that the crowd began to fill out of the yard and continue their tasks.

Jeor Walked past Lord Stark and Umber, no doubt heading for his chambers. Jon placed his practice sword back on the weapons rack and began to take off his padded chest. He heard the crunching of snow and turned to see Alliser approaching him. Rob walked over to his father and the greatjon, all wondering what would unfold. Alliser looked Jon up and down again before slowly holding his hand out. "Not bad … Jon". Jon looked to the hand before looking at Ser Alliser. He could see he was genuine with the act of respect, he slowly clasped his hand with Allisers and gave it a small squeeze. "You fought well Ser, the only fighter i know as good as you is Ser Rodrick". Alliser nodded before letting go of the boy's hand. "Aye, I have seen Ser Rodrick on the field of battle. He is indeed a good fighter, you are a credit to him". Jon smiled and finished putting his padding on the rack. He looked back to Alliser and narrowed his eyes. "Thank you Ser, however I would like an apology. For your remark about my mother". Alliser sighed before looking around awkwardly. "Aye, that was indeed a blunder on my part. I am sorry for what I said about your mother". He didn't wait for Jon to reply, he just stormed away and disappeared into castle blacks halls.

Jon was confused with the interaction, he didn't have time to think about it however as a giant hand slammed on his back. The force of the slap nearly knocked him to the ground. "Gods be good boy, where did you learn to fight like that aye". He looked behind him to see the Greatjon grinning at him. His Father and Rob were at his side. Jon coughed before grinning at the giant Lord. "Ser Rordrick is a fine teacher, he taught me and Rob how to wield a sword". The greatjon laughed "Piss on that boy, Ser Rodrick may have taught you how to handle a sword, but that was something else. You bested a famous night, twice your senior. That was instinct and natural talent, that you can't teach. Ned, you got a good lad here. You should be proud". Jon nervously looked at his father. Ned gave him a small smile and a nod. "Aye Lord Umber, I am proud". He looked at Rob and couldn't help but see his sullen look. Rob looked up from the ground and noticed Jon staring at him. "You did good brother". Jon sighed internally, perhaps that's the best he could expect. Showing Rob up like that was not his intention, but it did make him feel good knowing he was getting recognised for once.

Ned put his hand on Rob's shoulder "Rob, can you please help Lord Umber and his men get ready to leave. I would like a word with Jon". Rob gave a small nod and followed after the Greatjon. "Come little wolf, the quicker we get this done, the quicker i get home". Ned and Jon watched as the two went into the stables and began saddling the horses. Ned turned Jon and placed a hand on his shoulder. "It appears your fitting in well at castle black, even Lord Jeor has asked when you will be joining them". Jon chuckled before following his Lord Father into the halls of castle black. "I was just showing the recruits some moves. Ser Alliser is a good fighter but a poor teacher". It was Ned's turn to chuckle, he looked at Jon and couldn't help but see his mother in him. His mother was always one to help those who could not help themselves. She was brave and fierce, something Jon had clearly inherited. "We saw the whole thing you know, me, Jeor and the Greatjon. You did well to best him in combat, however what caught me by surprise was how you spoke to the man". Jon stopped his trek through the halls and frowned at his father. "The man insulted my mother, he had no respect for me. The only way to get some was to show him up in the yard. Uncle Benjen always told me that man gets what he earns at the wall, when he earns it". Ned sighed, of course he would take after Benjen in this matter. "Jon, I understand you want the others to respect you. That will come in time, when you join the night's watch…

"AND WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO JOIN THE WATCH".

Ned took a step back in shock, it was very rare his son raised his voice. What was more shocking was the words that came out of his mouth. "J-jon, you have always wanted to join the watch. You fit in so well here, the men respect you. What else are you going to do". Jon huffed and rubbed a hand through his black curly hair. "I don't know father, but what I know is I don't want to join the watch. Everyone here was forced to join, through their crimes or because they had nowhere to go. I think I deserve better than wasting my life away on the edge of the world. I want more father, I deserve more". Ned sighed as he watched a lone tear fall down his son's cheek. He approached him and slowly embraced him. He wrapped his fingers in his black curls and kissed his head. "Aye son, that you do." He knelt down to get eye level with Jon and smiled. "Well, it looks like we will have to find something for your future, for now just keep to your studies. Let's also try and not show up so many pompous knights". They both laughed and began to walk to their chambers, they had to get ready to see the greatjon off soon. "Did you see the look on Ser Alliser's face when I won"? Ned laughed and rubbed his head. "Aye i did, it looks like he had swallowed a frog".

NED

Ned drank deeply from the mug, he placed it back on the desk and looked at Jeor across from him. The aged commander stroked his raven as he fed it a handful of corn. "So you and your boys leave tomorrow Ned, I hope they have learned a lot". Ned nodded and tapped his arm rest. "Aye, both of my boys. It appears Jon has no desire to join the watch anymore". Jeor stood up and placed his raven back in its cage. He walked over to his window and sighed. "Tis a shame, Ned. That boy could have risen high in the watch, if it means anything to you, I would have made him my steward". Ned looked at him in confusion. "A steward, why not a ranger". Jeor took a swig of his ale and shook his head. "Don't mistake me Ned, he could be a ranger. However a boy like him, taught and raised by you. Who better to lead disgraced knights and thieves". Ned nodded, he understood now. Jeor would have groomed him for command. He was saying Jon could have been the one to replace Jeor after his passing.

"That's the thing, Lord Commander, he has no interest in spending time with thieves and rapists. He says he can do better". Jeor nodded and sighed. "Ah, I can't blame the boy. He is indeed too good for the watch, what will he do now". Ned downed the last of his drink before standing up to join Jeor at the window. "I don't know, perhaps I can find a knight for him to squire for. He is tal-

"RIDER APPROACHING, OPEN THE GATE".

They looked down to the courtyard to see a lone rider trott into the courtyard. He was hunched over and bobbing up and down on his horse. He came to a stop in the centre of the courtyard, the rider made no effort to get off his horse. A watchman approached the rider, just as he grabbed the reins the rider slumped and fell off his horse. Before the man in black could shout help Jeor and Ned raced out of Jeor's chambers. They passed many black brothers through the castle, all of them joining the two when they saw they were in a hurry. Finally they made it to the courtyard and raced over to the group that surrounded the downed rider.

They pushed through the crowd and finally saw how injured the man was. He had an arrow in his back, his right eye was purple and he shivered in the cold. On his leather chest they could see a roaring giant with broken chains. Ned knelt down and spoke to the man. "You're one of Lord Umber's men, what happened lad". The man coughed and spat out some blood before looking at Ned. "We were on our way to the last Hearth, we *cough* we were ambushed by wildings. Lo-Lord Umber sent me to find you, he was taken by the wildings". The man closed his eyes and coughed again. Ned shook the man. "Where was he spotted last, come on lad where were they". The man gave no response. He lay still on the floor, his chest no longer rising and falling. Jeor put his hand on Ned's shoulder and sighed. "He's gone, Ned. The lad must have rode all day while injured. He died to bring us this message, now we must do our part". Ned nodded before slowly rising to his feet. He looked to the assembled group, seeing Stark guards and men of the watch looking at him. "Alright everyone, let's saddle up and begin to search for this band of wildings. We find them, we find Lord Umber. We will form groups of ten and spread out towards the Last Hearth. LET'S MOVE". With that everyone scrambled to gather their arms and armour. Ned paced over to Jon and Rob and grabbed them both by the shoulder. "You two are with me, stay close by, and watch out for one another". They both nodded before following him to the stables. Just as Jon was about to enter, he looked up to the balcony of the castle and saw the white head of Maester Aemon. The old man turned his milky eyes to Jon and gave a small nod. He couldn't tell if the elderly man knew it was him, but he gave a small nod back before marching to his horse. He liked the Greatjon, and he would do his best to save him. Even if it meant he had to do it alone.

Am all done, damn that was a big chapter. I know its not action packed, however its setting the tone of the story and giving you guys an idea of my version of jon. It's an insight into his relationship with Rob and Ned. The next chapter will have more action I promise. I know for a fact my fight scenes need some work so please message me with any suggestions. Other than that thanks for reading, please review and leave positive feedback. See you all next time.
