She woke up to a noise, something got torn up. She heard a pained hiss, the kind of noise someone makes when they're seething in pain quietly. She was always a light sleeper, and that little noise was enough to wake her up. She heard this alone.

It was the noise afterwards that woke up Hero and Kel. The loudest, most gut-wrenching wailing they'd ever heard, coming from Basil's room. They all rushed to his room. Polly must have heard it too because she was already at Basil's door, asking him to let her in. She tried to open the door, but it wouldn't move. "Polly, let me try," Hero offered and grabbed the handle. "It's so wobbly…" Aubrey's ears perked up at the sound of the doorknob jiggling in Hero's hands. That's exactly what the doors in her house sounded like for a couple months until they finally…

Thud.

The knob rolled down the hall. Kel stopped it with his foot, "Should we try to shove it open?" He asked his brother.

"No, that'll just break our shoulders, but maybe we could kick it…" Hero replied.

While they deliberated on a physical approach, Aubrey took a look through the hole left by the fallen doorknob. It was too dark for her to make out any details, and the wailing was louder than ever with the doorknob gone. She took a pin out of her hair and shifted the metal plate until it slid out with a clink as it hit the ground. They all watched as Aubrey tried to push open the door, but it was a little heavy for her. "I've got this!" Kel was getting ready to leap forward.

"WAIT!" Aubrey screamed.

Kel froze. Aubrey scrambled to get her words together, "Just help me push the door open, but be gentle."

Together, they opened the door, getting it only about a quarter open when they realized Sunny was slumped up against it on the other side. Basil was screaming at the top of his lungs, and Sunny was silent. Aubrey slid in through the opening, and stared in shock at Sunny on the ground. Her mouth was agape. There was a trail of blood flowing from his right eye. Basil was still screaming, but she noticed the sound of Polly's tender voice behind her, trying to soothe Basil. She wanted to do something for Sunny. Her words faltered as she tried to speak, "S-s-sun… Sunny. Sunny, a-are you…" He lay motionless. She began reaching out towards him.

Hero grabbed her hand, she was so focused on Sunny she didn't realize Hero was standing next to her. He spoke with such an authoritative tone. "Aubrey, he just had a traumatic head injury. Whatever you do, don't move him. You absolutely cannot move him," Hero's voice carried a weight she'd never heard from him before, "He could die."

"Ah, ah," Basil was struggling to stay standing, "D-d-d-don't… move hiiiiiiiiiii…" and his howling started to stammer into a soft whimper as Polly tried to support him.

"Whoa! Whoa!" Kel swooped into place to catch Basil before he dropped, stopping Basil's full weight from falling onto Polly. While Kel gently set Basil onto his bed, Polly whipped out her phone and called for emergency services. Hero's hand had changed place now, Aubrey just noticed. He wasn't gripping her at the wrist anymore to stop her from reaching Sunny. Now he was gently holding her hand in reassurance. Sunny was completely still. If not for everything that happened leading up to now, if not for the blood dripping off of his cheek, he would have seemed to be soundly asleep.

The tears streamed down her cheeks as she looked up at him, "Hero, will Sunny be okay?"

She couldn't really read the expression on Hero's face, it was like she saw the briefest glimpse, maybe just her imagination, of a grimace. But she couldn't tell for sure, she didn't want to think it could mean the worst. He looked mature, having a calm but concerned face.

In a very hushed tone, he said, "Everything is going to be okay."
