A/N: I recently went roller skating, and came up with this. Enjoy!
Courfeyrac's birthday party was at a roller-skating rink. Skating was his favorite activity, so that was no surprise to anyone. They all met up for a two-hour skating session.
The friends ranged in skating ability, from having never worn a pair of skates before (Bossuet) to looking like a figure skater on rollerblades (Éponine). Joly and Musichetta, and Marius and Cosette had already formed pairs; the latter pair were holding hands and skating so close together that their shoulders were touching. They were singing along to the love song that was currently playing.
Enjolras rolled his eyes at the lovesick couple. Éponine skated past the blond man, turned around so that she was facing him, pointed at Marius and Cosette, and pretended to gag behind her hand. Ever since the newest member of Les Amis de l'ABC had started dating Cosette, he had been the target of much good-natured jesting.
Enjolras hid a snicker behind his own hand. Unfortunately, seeing as he was new to roller skating, this action caused him to lose his balance. He flailed, and would have fallen if it hadn't been for Combeferre, who came up behind his friend and steadied him.
"Thanks, 'Ferre," Enjolras said. Éponine was now skating backwards, still looking at him. Then she changed direction and was literally skating circles around him. "Showoff!" Enjolras yelled.
Meanwhile, Grantaire, Bahorel, Bossuet, and Courfeyrac had joined hands to form a chain. They made it three yards before Grantaire's feet slid out from under him. He collapsed onto the rink with a loud smack, bringing the others down with him. They all shouted in surprise and pain.
Unfortunately, they had fallen down right in Enjolras's path, and he didn't know how to stop. He soon found himself a part of the tangled mess of college students on the floor.
Joly, Musichetta, and Éponine immediately skated over to the pile of bodies and helped the guys up. Joly suggested they all take a break.
With some help, everyone made their way to the concessions bar off to the side of the rink. Enjolras had bruised his knee when he fell, but he tried not to let on how much pain it was causing him.
Éponine did not fail to notice the way he was limping, or the discoloration visible below the hem of his shorts. "That looks ugly." She pointed at it.
"I'm okay," Enjolras tried to brush her off.
But Éponine completely ignored him. She walked up to the concessions counter and asked the person working there, "Can I get some ice for my friend's knee?" The worker quickly returned with what she had asked for. Éponine went to sit down next to Enjolras and held the bag of ice to his injury.
"I'm capable of holding the ice pack by myself," Enjolras said.
Éponine looked down, seeming to only just realize their position. "Oh, sorry." She relinquished her hold on the bag and gave it to Enjolras.
"You didn't have to do that, you know," he told her. "My knee would have been fine."
Éponine shook her head in mock disapproval. "You're not made of marble, no matter what R says. I just wanted to make sure you took care of yourself. My brother Gavroche gets into scrapes all the time, it seems, and I'm always patching him up."
Enjolras understood her desire to make sure he was okay. He hoped he hadn't offended her by his resistance. "I didn't mean to hurt your feelings, 'Ponine. I'm just not used to being fussed over. I really do appreciate you caring for me." He smiled at her and took her hand.
Éponine grinned back at him. "I'm not offended." She gestured to his knee. "We still have fifteen minutes left in our skating session. Do you think you're up to finish it?"
Enjolras squeezed her hand. "Definitely!"
The two of them stood up and skated back out to the rink, still clasping each other's hands.
