She's a Rainbow
Racing down the halls, Luna Lovegood tripped over the laces in her muggle sneakers. She knew that they were impractical, but she had loved the shiny sequin patter that decorated the soft canvas fabric. Her father, always eager to support self expression, had fumbled with muggle money and immediately bought them for her. Only a few students had given her a hard time about them and she considered that a victory in its self.
Gathering the books that had left her arms when she tripped, she continued on her way. As she rounded a corner, she spotted two Slytherin boys shoving around a round faced Gryffindor boy. One of the bullies pulled the poor boys cloak over his head and went to push him down a staircase that suddenly swung into place.
Filling her lungs with air Luna projected her voice as best she could.
"You cannot do that!"
Startled by the witness, the bullies scrambled away. Luna rushed over to the other boy nad helped him away from the stairs, pulling his cloak back down so he could see.
"Thank you," he squeaked.
Luna beamed.
"I'm Neville." The boy stuck out his hand.
Luna shook it daintily and then grabbed it.
"I'm Luna and since we're already late very late for and I'm assuming we're friends now. I'd like to show you something."She said this all in a light airy voice. Not a tad rushed, but all in one breath.
And with that she lead them down a sunny corridor, a look of mild terror on Neville's face. After a few twists and turns, Luna pried open a door, that looked not unlike all the others, but the room inside was truly unique, even for a magical castle.
It was built with floor to ceiling windows. Golden, afternoon sunlight poured in from every possible angle, bathing the pair in a warm glow. Luna dropped Neville's hand and turned her face to the light. Watching her absorb the warmth, Neville felt his hear beating in his chest, louder than it had been moments before. He was captivated, when suddenly, with her eyes still closed, Luna pulled up her cloak to above her ankles and began to twirl in the light. Neville was captivated by the way the light bounced off her unusual shoes, casting little rainbows all around the room.
"Luna," He whispered, not wanting to disturb her moment of bliss. "Look around."
She opened her soft blue eyes slowly and grinned as she saw the hundreds of rainbows dancing on the walls and reflecting on their faces.
"Its funny that something muggle made could be so magical," she stated. "I'm happy I met you Neville."
She suddenly got a bit shier.
"Thank you for following me…you didn't have to."
Neville shook his head.
"Don't thank me. I hadn't a clue what was going on but I know for certain I don't have many friends. Besides," he said grinning, "you saved me. It wasn't a very big risk on my part."
A wave of relief washed over Luna as she settled into a corner in the room. Neville took on opposite of her and the pair basked like housecats, in sunlight and rainbows.
