Bonesborough (Day)
If you were to ask Luz how she thought her day would go, tumbling out of a portal would not have scratched the top twenty.
"Ugh, that was not pleasant." she said, clutching her head. Next time she saw a tiny owl run through a glowing door with her trash, she'd leave it alone. "Now where the heck am I?" It looked like she was in some sort of tent. Inside with her was an assortment of strange items, most of which looked shiny.
"Ah, you're back." a female voice said from outside the tent. Curious, Luz peeked through the entrance and saw a woman with bushy white hair and pale skin. On top of the woman's staff was the owl Luz saw before. With a twist of her hand, the woman transformed the owl into a wooden carving decorating her staff, amazing the girl.
The woman took the bag the owl was carrying, checking several items within. She took out a gold bar, a piece of paper with a pentagram on it, and a glowing chalice, but deemed them all worthless. Eventually, she found something she liked.
"This. This will make me rich!" she proclaimed, putting on a pair of google-eye glasses.
In her stupor, Luz unconsciously inched forward. Unfortunately, she accidentally stepped on a chew toy and fell out of the tent. "Ow, my head." the girl said, putting a hand to her bruised cranium. Looking up, she saw the woman staring down at her.
"Hmm, what do we have here?" she asked.
"I'm sorry for spying on you. I just wanted to see where the tiny owl was going." Luz said, standing up. Now that she was outside, she could see a wide variety of strange beings walking about the marketplace. "This place is gorgeous." That's when she remembered something rather important. "I, uh, need to get back home now."
Pressing a button on a wooden key, the woman closed the portal door. "Oh, no. You're not going anywhere. It's been a while since a human's come all the way out here. You could be useful."
"Human? Does that mean you're not human?" Luz asked. The woman looked mostly human to her.
"Nope!" the woman said, showing off her ears. Unlike Luz's own, they were pointed at the end. "I am Eda the Owl Lady! Most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles! I am respected, feared,-"
"Busted!" a male voice interrupted as a gloved fist broke Eda's stand. "Eda the Owl Lady, you are under arrest for misuse of magic and demonic misdemeanors!" a masked man wearing a black uniform said, holding a wanted poster of Eda. "You are sentenced to life in the Conformatorium!
"Wow! Witch criminal!" Luz exclaimed, excited.
"Agh, quit following me around already! I haven't done anything!" Eda said, irritated.
"And you're coming too! For fraternizing with a criminal!" the guard said, grabbing Luz's wrist.
"No! Not again!" the girl cried.
"Hold it!" Eda said. "I'll go quietly, just give me a sec." She bent down to pick up her staff, then used it to whack the guard in the head, denting his mask and knocking him unconscious. "C'mon, kid!" Eda grabbed Luz's arm and pulled her through the marketplace before getting on her staff and flying off with the girl.
"That was incredible!" Luz shouted as they flew through the sky. Now that she had a bird's eye view of where she was, she was even more amazed. It looked like there were bones protruding out from the ground, and wherever there weren't houses or stores, there were wide open plains and red forests.
"What is this place?" Luz asked.
"Welcome to the Boiling Isles." Eda said, gesturing to the world around her. "Every myth you humans have is a result of a bit of our world spilling into yours."
"Woah. So it's like a mystery world." Luz said, filled with wonder.
"Say, kid. You sounded like that wasn't your first run-in with the law back there." Eda said, impressed. "What'd you do back home?"
"Nothing!" Luz said, defending herself. "It's just, I may have accidentally bumped into a few people. With my fist. But they all started it!"
"Sure, kid." Eda said, smirking. "Say, I don't think I got your name."
"Oh, I'm Luz." the girl introduced. She didn't feel like giving her surname until she was sure this woman wasn't dangerous.
"Hmm, strange name." Eda said as her staff floated closer to the ground. "But, who am I to judge?" As she stood up, her hand detached from her body and remained tightly gripped onto the staff.
"Uh, you forgot something." Luz said, grabbing the hand and giving it back to the woman.
"Ah, thanks, kid." Eda said, screwing her hand back onto her wrist. "C'mon, my house is just behind these trees."
Following behind the woman, Luz bore witness to a small white house near the cliffside. "Do any of the people looking for you know about this place?" Luz asked, worried.
"Some of them do. But I've got a state-of-the-art defense system." Eda explained as she approached her front door.
An owl face seemingly carved onto the door blinked, then started speaking. "Password!" it called out. Eda promptly poked it in the eye.
"We don't have time for this, Hooty. Let us in." the witch said.
"Okay, geez, ow, HOOT." Hooty said, opening his mouth wide enough for both Luz and Eda to pass through.
"Welcome to the Owl House!" Eda announced, snapping her fingers and illuminating the living room. What drew Luz's attention more than anything else, even the fact that the walls were breathing, was the giant wanted poster on the wall behind the couch. "This is where I lay low to hide from the pressures of modern life. Also cops. And ex-boyfriends, heh."
"This is so beautiful. Do you live here all alone?" Luz asked. Just as she said that, a loud thumping noise came from upstairs.
"Actually, I have a roommate." Eda admitted.
"Who dares disturb the King of Demons!?" a bellowing voice called out. A small furry creature with a skull-like helmet walked into the room, clad in a bathrobe and holding a rubber duck.
Luz's eyes sparkled as soon as she saw King, and she lunged at the small being to hold and pet him. "Oh, he's so cute! Who's a little guy? Is it you? Is it you?"
"Agh! I don't know who your little guy is! Eda, who is this monster!?" King cried out.
"This is Luz, the human. She's here to help us with our little problem." Eda explained.
"Oh, hooray!" King said, now indifferent to the fact that he was being held by someone much bigger than himself.
"What problem?" Luz asked, curious.
"Well, you see..." Eda cast a spell circle, creating an illusion of a mighty beast with the same dark fur and skull mask as King. "King was once a mighty king of demons. That is, until his crown was stolen and he was reduced to...this. The crown is being held by the Warden Wrath, behind a barrier of magic that only a human can pass through."
"Sounds like fun! I'll do it!" Luz said, smiling ear to ear.
'Woah, right off the bat?' Eda thought to herself, surprised by how eager the girl was to help. Especially since they only just met and she was keeping her from going home. "Okay then, let's go!"
"Where are we going?" Luz asked, excited.
"Somewhere super fun!" Eda said with a chipper tone.
Conformatorium (Night)
"The Conformatorium." Eda finished, standing outside the imposing building with King and Luz. "This is where they keep people deemed unsuitable for society."
"So, it's a prison." Luz said, a grim look on her face.
"Don't worry, kid. We know how to slip away from the guards." Eda reassured, seeing how uncomfortable the child looked.
"Try catching me when I'm covered in grease! I'm a squirmy little fella!" King proclaimed.
"The crown is being kept in that tower." Eda said, pointing to a tower in the center of the prison. "You and King will make your way up there while I keep the guards busy."
"You got it!" Luz said, saluting as King climbed onto her hoodie. Smirking, Eda used her staff to create a disc of golden energy underneath Luz. The disc rose into the air like an elevator, allowing the human to enter the prison through an open window.
The cold atmosphere was unsettling for the young human girl. Something King was able to pick up on. "Uh, Luz. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, just a bit rattled." Luz said, walking past several empty cells. If she wasn't careful, that could've been her.
"Hey, purple lady!" a female voice said from inside one of the cells. Turning to face the source, Luz saw a woman in a dress with dark hair. "How'd you get out of your cell?"
"Oh, I'm not a prisoner." Luz said.
"Not yet, you're not!" King playfully said, not knowing how much it affected the girl.
"None of us should be here!" the woman said, angry at her situation. "I like to write fanfics of food falling in love, and I got locked up for it!"
"I'm here because I like to eat my own eyes." a demon with several eyeholes said, picking out one of his eyes and eating it.
"We are agents of free expression! You will never silence us!" a tiny demon with a large nose shouted.
"Yeah, she's big on conspiracy theories." the fanfic writing woman explained.
"The world is a simulation! We are playthings for a higher being!" Tiny Nose desperately screamed.
Unfortunately, that outburst got the attention of the one person Luz and King were trying to avoid. "I can hear you. What are you fools whispering about?" Warden Wrath said in a deep voice as he walked into Luz's view. The demon wore a similar uniform to the guards he commanded, only with much more detail put into the design of his mask. Looking down, he noticed one of Eda's wanted posters. "Ah, the Owl Lady. Soon, she will be mine. As for the rest of you, remember: There's no place in the world if you can't fit in."
"You will never be able to control us, you old creep! We will escape this hole, and we will conquer you!" Tiny Nose proclaimed. Groaning, Warden Wrath walked over to her cell and opened it. "Hooray, I'm free!" she said happily before being crushed in Wrath's grip. With that, the warden left.
Luz opened the cell she was hiding in, quickly rushing to the lever next to the woman's cell. "Don't worry, I'll get you out of here!" Curling her hand into a fist, she prepared to punch the lever.
"Stop." the woman said, halting Luz's attack. "It's no use. Even if we escape, there's nowhere we can go that the warden won't find us. But, at least you'll be able to enjoy freedom for us."
"But..." Luz said, not wanting to accept this reality. "I'm sorry." she said, walking away with her head down.
"Hey, kid!" Eda said, flying in on her staff. "The warden's busy tormenting some tiny creature. That'll give us the perfect distraction to sneak to the barrier and get the crown."
"I guess." Luz said dejectedly.
"What's eating you?" Eda asked the human.
"It's just, the people here are innocent." Luz explained. "None of them have done anything wrong. Is it really such a bad thing to not fit in?"
Before Eda could reply, King jumped out of Luz's hoodie and ran ahead of them. "My crown! I sense its power!" he said, clambering onto the doorknob of the contraband room before eventually tearing it off.
"Ah, he's so cute when he's thirsty for power." Eda said, forgetting about Luz's dilemma. "Let's get in there before he hurts himself."
When Luz and Eda entered the contraband room, they were met with a radiant pillar of light. King was trying to get through, but the light was preventing him from entering.
"So, I just need to walk into the light?" Luz asked.
"Yep. It shouldn't have any problems with letting a human through." Eda explained.
Taking a deep breath, Luz entered the barrier and was able to seamlessly enter. Inside was a giant pile of junk, things the human wouldn't bat an eye at if she saw them any other day. But at the top of the pile was the crown she was looking for. Only, it was made of paper. Grabbing it, she exited the barrier and gave it to King.
"I thought it would be made of metal. Does it really give him powers?" Luz asked, watching as the small demon took a stuffed bunny and proclaimed it as a general in his army of darkness.
"Yeah, no. King and I don't have a lot in this world." Eda admitted. "But if that stupid crown makes him happy, then it's important to me too." Luz smiled at that. "Now, let's get out of here before the warden loses his head."
"Too late." Warden Wrath said, morphing his arm into a blade and decapitating Eda with it.
"Ow! Oh, I hate it when that happens!" Eda's dismembered head complained.
"How did you survive that!?" Luz screamed. To her knowledge, only one person could survive that kind of injury.
"Eh, this is just something that happens when you get older." Eda said, not wanting to get into the specifics of her curse.
"I finally have you, Eda the Owl Lady." Warden Wrath said, picking up Eda's head by her hair. "My guards couldn't trap you, but I knew if I took your pet's toy, you'd come running." He swiped the crown off King's head and ripped it apart, much to the furry demon's anguish.
"What do you want from me!?" Eda asked, outraged. "I've never broken any of your stupid laws...in front of you!"
"I want you..." Wrath used his free hand to get something from inside his cloak. To everyone's surprise, he got out a bouquet of flowers. "to go out with me."
"What?" everyone said simultaneously.
"You've always eluded our capture. You've always been the one who got away. I found that alluring." Wrath explained.
"This is getting too weird for my taste." Luz said, creeped out.
"You stay out of this!" Wrath shouted, elongating his arm to grab the human. "So, Owl Lady, what do you say? The most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles and the feared Warden Wrath! We'll be the greatest power couple of all time! I mean, it's not like you can say no right now."
Eda looked at Luz and King, then came to a decision. "Fine, can you just come closer?" Wrath obliged, expecting a kiss, only for the Owl Lady to spit in his face. The large demon recoiled, dropping Luz in the process. "Hah! Get over it! You ripped up King's crown and then you cut off my head! I am NOT going out with you!"
"If you're declining me, then I have no choice but to-" Wrath was cut off when Luz, still on the ground, kicked his leg and forced him to drop Eda's head.
"Nice one, kid!" the woman congratulated, using her body to reattach her head. "Owlbert, get us out of here!" Eda's staff started levitating, whisking King onto it before Eda and Luz mounted it.
"No! You're not getting away again, Owl Lady!" Warden Wrath bellowed, chasing after the trio.
As they sped through the corridors of the prison, they eventually got to the room Luz entered through. "Eda, can you fly us closer to the levers?" the human asked. Knowing what the girl wanted, Eda flew Owlbert close to the levers, allowing Luz to flip them up as they passed by.
'Huh, the kid's stronger than she looks.' Eda thought to herself, surprised.
Owlbert flew out of the Conformatorium, managing to make it all the way to the courtyard. But they were swatted down by Wrath, who morphed his arm into a hammer. Luz braced herself for a fight, only for Eda to stand in front of her and use the Portal Key to summon the Portal Door.
"Luz, go back to the Human Realm!" Eda said, worried for the human.
"No, I can help!" Luz shouted. "My punches are as strong as pistols!"
"If you think this guy is bad, you should've seen her last boyfriend!" King told the girl.
"Not my boyfriend!" Eda shot back, firing magic bullets at Wrath. "But seriously, kid! Get out of here before you get hurt!"
"No!" Luz shouted. "I won't let you fight on your own! Human-Human..." Luz pulled back her arm, causing it to stretch far beyond what a human should be able to, shocking Eda, Wrath, and King. "Pistol!" Luz's arm shot forward, striking Wrath's face and breaking his mask.
"Kid, what the heck was that!?" Eda asked, completly lost for words.
"I ate a Devil Fruit! The Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika!" Luz explained, stretching her cheek before it snapped back into place. "I'm a rubber person who can stretch any part of my body!"
"Well, that's new." Eda said, still in shock.
"I know how to fight, so let me help you!" Luz pleaded, preparing another attack. "Human-Human...Whip!" She kicked, stretching out her leg and hitting Wrath in the stomach, sending him crashing into the prison.
"Ugh, who are you, human?" Wrath asked, pulling himself out of the rubble and running toward the girl.
"I'm Monkey D. Luz, and I'm going to be the greatest pirate ever!" Luz proclaimed, stretching both her arms back. "Human-Human...Bazooka!" Her arms snapped forward, colliding with Wrath's body and launching him into the distance.
Owl House (Night)
"So, there's a lot we need to talk about, kid." Eda said, sitting on her couch. "In all my years, I've never heard of a Devil Fruit."
"Really? They're super common back home." Luz said, confused. "A lot of my family's eaten them. The Human-Human Fruit, the Flame-Flame Fruit, the Revive-Revive Fruit..."
"Okay, I get it." Eda said, pinching the bridge of her nose. "So, these fruits give special powers to people who eat them?"
"Yeah! And my mom has one of the strongest ones out there!" Luz said proudly.
"Speaking of which, we should be sending you home now." Eda said, summoning the Portal Door.
"Actually, would you mind if I stayed here a while longer?" Luz asked, much to the Owl Lady's shock. "When I came through the portal, I was supposed to be training my Haki. But if I stay with you, I can train with Haki and Magic! I can become a witch like you!"
"Don't be ridiculous. Humans can't become witches." Eda said, not wanting the child to endanger herself by staying in the Demon Realm.
"Have any Devil Fruit power-users come here before me?" Luz asked rhetorically.
"Fine, but you'll have to pull your weight around here." the woman compromised.
"You got it! I used to mop the deck back on the Sunny." Luz said with a smile.
'Sunny?' Eda thought to herself, confused.
Monkey D. Luz
The youngest of the Straw Hat Pirates, known as "Rubber Boa Luz", grew up on the Thousand Sunny with her family. As a child, she accidentally ate a Devil Fruit that turned her body into rubber. Like other Devil Fruit power-users, she can't swim. She wants to get strong enough to be worthy of her powers.
Devil Fruit
Also known as "The Incarnation of the Sea Devil", those who eat the fruit acquire various abilities depending on their types, at the cost of being hated by the sea and being unable to swim for the rest of their life. What's more, it is said that if you eat two or more, you will die. There are three main types: the "superhuman" type (Paramecia); the "beast" type (Zoan); and the "nature" type (Logia). Luz's Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika is a Zoan-type.
Haki
Special abilities that lie dormant in humans. There are three types: Armament Haki, Observation Haki, and Conqueror's Haki. Armament Haki can be used not only for defense but also to attack, and even to attack Logia-power users. Observation Haki is a skill that allows you to improve all of your five senses, which makes you able to foresee enemy attacks. Conqueror's Haki gives the ability to intimidate and make those around you faint. Armament and Observation Haki can be achieved through disciplined training, but Conqueror's Haki is something one must be born with.
Thousand Sunny
The ship belonging to the Straw Hat Pirates, a crewmate who shares the soul of the defunct Going Merry. Designed by Franky and built by Water Seven's shipwrights. Iceberg named it in the hopes that it could "transcend a thousand harsh seas like the sun." The hull is built with the strongest wood from the Jewel Tree Adam, and it has a Soldier Dock System that can switch between various functions, and a cola-powered emergency accelerator.
