Out in the northern wilderness at their encampment, Jon, Sansa, Aldarra and Davos are riding horses through the encampment.
Aldarra said flatly, "Stannis camped here on his way to Winterfell. It was where they tried to burn Shireen alive."
Sansa said sarcastically, "And this place is to be a good thing?"
Davos said, "He was the most experienced commander in Westeros. He chose this place for a reason. Those mountains are a natural fortification. There's a stream down there for the horses."
Jon said, "We're not staying here long. Another storm could hit any day." Aldarra nodded.
Davos said, "Aye, the snows defeated Stannis as much as the Boltons did."
Jon said, "We have to march on Winterfell now while we still can." They all dismount their horses and begin walking side by side.
Aldarra said, "2,000 Wildlings. 50 of my soldiers, 200 Hornwoods, 143 Mazins- -"
Sansa said, "62 Mormonts."
Davos said, "It's not what we'd hoped for. But we still have a chance if we're careful and smart." Davos spots two men fighting.
Davos said, "For fuck's sake." Davos hurries over to the men. Jon, Aldarra and Sansa watch him go and then continue walking.
Aldarra said, "Lyanna confronted Jorah. Called him a disgrace to her people. She wondered why I had him with me."
Sansa asked, "What did you say?"
Aldarra said, "I told her that he has pledged himself to me as my shield. She said she hopes he is more reliable than he was to her family. I told her that I know he is a different man now."
Sansa said, "I hope so. He betrayed the North."
Aldarra said, "Perhaps, he will be able to have already changed and will redeem himself. He seems to have to me, but we will know in a battle."
Sansa said a bit spitefully to Jon, "So Davos is your most trusted advisor now? Because he secured 62 men from a ten year old?"
Jon said, defending him, "Ser Davos is the reason I'm standing here talking to you and he served Stannis for years."
Sansa said sarcastically, "Stannis who lost the Blackwater, who murdered his own brother, tried to burn his daughter to death, and who doesn't have a head?" Sansa stops walking. Jon keeps walking a few paces and then turns to face her.
Sansa said emphatically, "It's not enough. We need more men."
Jon said, "There's no time.
Sansa said, "If we went down to Castle Cerwyn, I know that Lord- -" Jon moves close to Sansa.
Jon said, "We fight with the army we have. And pray that Aldarra's idea of using one of the dragons evens out the men we lack."
Jon looks over Sansa's shoulder at Davos. He is standing in front of the fighting men, who are wrestling on the ground.
Davos said, "Friends, this is not worth fighting over!" Jon walks past Sansa and away.
Davos said, "This'll be it, now. Right now, we don't need to be fighting." One of the men gets in Davos' face.
One man asked aggressively, "Who the fuck are you?"
Davos said, "Hold on."
The other man said, "Yeah, who the fuck are you?"
Sansa spies the maester of Bear Island handling some crates containing ravens. He holds up one of the crates to Lyanna Mormont.

Sansa is writing a letter inside her tent. She signs her name, pours wax, and presses the wax with the direwolf sigil of House Stark. She picks up the letter and rereads it, then stares ahead.

At Riverrun, Brienne and Podrick arrive on horseback. They stare out at the Lannister/Frey encampment from an overlooking hill.
Podrick said, "Looks like a siege, my lady."
Brienne said, "You have a keen military mind, Pod."
Brienne spots Jamie riding a white horse among his men.
Podrick said, "My lady. My lady."
Several Lannister soldiers ride towards Brienne and Podrick, and then encircle them.
A soldier said, "Who goes there? State your business!"
Brienne said, "My name is Brienne of Tarth. Please inform Ser Jaime Lannister I've come to speak with him. Tell him I have his sword.
—--
In Jamie's tent, Brienne and Jamie stand across from each other.
Jamie said, "I never thought you'd find her. I just assumed Sansa was dead."
Brienne said, "Why would you assume that?"
Jamie said, "In my experience, girls like her don't live very long."
Brienne said, "I don't think you know many girls like her. Lady Aldarra has been taking care of her this whole time along with her son."
Jamie said, "Well, I'm proud of you. I am. You fulfilled your oath to Catelyn Stark against all odds. I have a little baby brother. My father will be pleased. He will increase that bounty on her head to get her back. He shutdown emotionally again when she left. It's like he was before. I think he was falling in love with her and she left him. When he finds out he has a son. I'm really not sure what he will do."
Jamie walks around the room and comes to a stop on Brienne's other side. Brienne turns to face him.
Jamie said, "Of course my sister had wanted Sansa dead, along with Aldarra and Tyrion, but my sister is gone now. She was poisoned in The Great Sept by one of those fanatics in the Faith Militant. They are all dead now too thanks to my father, but I think the Faith took over King Tommen and Queen Margaery. He was easily influenced by them. What the hell are you doing here?"
Brienne said, "I've come for the Blackfish."
Jamie said, "You're welcome to have him."
Brienne said, "Lady Sansa desires to take her ancestral seat back from the Boltons and assume her rightful position as Lady of Winterfell."
Jamie said, "With what army does she plan on taking Winterfell?"
Brienne said, "The Tully army."
Jamie said, "They're a bit occupied at the moment. I was sent here to reclaim Riverrun, currently defended by the Tully rebels, so you can see the conundrum."
Brienne said, "The Tullys are rebels because they're fighting for their home?"
Jamie said, "Riverrun was granted to the Freys by royal decree."
Brienne said, "As a reward for betraying Robb Stark and slaughtering his family."
Jamie said, "Exactly." Jamie and Brienne stare at each other.
Jamie said, "We shouldn't argue about politics."
Brienne said, "You're a knight, Ser Jaime. I know there is honor in you. I've seen it myself."
Jamie said, "I'm a Lannister. Don't ask me to betray my own house."
Brienne said, "I do no such thing. Take Riverrun without bloodshed. Ride south with your mission complete and your army intact."
Jamie said, "What do you propose?"
Brienne said, "Allow me to enter Riverrun under a flag of truce. Let me try to persuade the Blackfish to give up the castle."
Jamie said, "Why would he abandon his ancestral home?"
Brienne said, "Because you'll allow him to lead the Tully forces safely north."
Jamie said, "Have you ever met the Blackfish?"
Brienne said, "No."
Jamie said, "He's even more stubborn than you are." Brienne looks down. Jamie walks back around the table to Brienne's other side.
Jamie said, "All right. Try to talk some sense into the old goat. He won't listen, but his men might. Not everybody wants to die for someone else's home."
Brienne said, "I need your word. If I persuade him to abandon the castle, you'll grant us safe passage north."
Jamie said, "You have my word. You have until nightfall." Brienne nods and undoes her sword belt. She hands Oathkeeper to Jamie. Jamie sighs.
Brienne said, "You gave it to me for a purpose. I've achieved that purpose."
Jamie said, "It's yours. It will always be yours. I think it is part of Aldarra's ancestral sword. My father melted it down and made two out of it. I have Joffrey's now. You keep that one."
Brienne stares into Jamie's eyes, then ties Oathkeeper back on her waist and begins to walk out. Jamie follows her to the entrance of the tent. Brienne turns back.
Brienne said, "One last thing, Ser Jaime."
Jamie said, "Yes, Lady Brienne?"
Brienne said, "Should I fail to persuade the Blackfish to surrender, and if you attack the castle, honor compels me to fight for Sansa's kin."
Jamie said, "Of course it does."
Brienne said, "To fight you."
Jamie said, "Let's hope it doesn't come to that."
Brienne and Jamie stare into each other's eyes. Brienne exits. Jamie watches her go.

As they approach the keep, Brienne and Podrick follow Brynden holding a piece of parchment as he walks along the walls of Riverrun.
Brynden said, "I've said no three times already."
Brienne said, "I have a signed letter from your niece."
Brynden said, "I haven't seen her since she was a child. I don't know her signature. I don't know you. And I will not surrender." Brynden turns to one of his soldiers.
Brynden said, "Double the guards tonight." Brynden looks out at the Lannister/Frey encampment.
Brynden said, "The Kingslayer wants to try us. I can feel it." Brynden turns on his heel and walks inside. Brienne and Podrick follow him.
Brienne said, "As I have said, my name is- -"
Brynden said, "Yes, Brienne of Tarth. I know your father. A good man."
Brienne said, "He always spoke highly of you."
Brynden said, "And if he were here now, I'd tell him the same I'm telling you." Brynden makes his way down a set of steps.
Brynden said, "If you think I'm abandoning my family's seat on the Kingslayer's word of honor, you're a bloody fool."
Brienne said, "Riverrun cannot stand against the Lannisters and the Freys."
Brynden said, "We can stand longer than your one-handed friend thinks we can."
Brynden, Brienne, and Podrick emerge into Riverrun's main courtyard.
Brienne said, "He's not my friend."
Brynden said, "No?" Brynden stops and turns back to face Brienne.
Brynden said, "Who gave you permission to cross the siege line and enter the castle? Who gave you that sword with the gold lion on the pommel?"
Brienne said, "Ser Jaime kept his word to your niece Catelyn Stark. He sent me to find Sansa, to help her as Catelyn wanted. He gave me this sword to protect her. That is what I have done and I will continue to do until the day I die."
Brienne holds out the piece of parchment to Brynden. Brynden takes it, unfolds it, and reads its contents. He smiles and chuckles under his breath.
Brynden said, "She's exactly like her mother." Brienne smiles. Brynden turns back to face her.
Brynden said, "I don't have enough men to help her take Winterfell."
Brienne said, "You have more than she does."
Brynden said, "She wants her home back. I understand that. But this is my home. And if Jaime Lannister wants it, he can bloody well take it the way everyone else does." Brynden hands the letter back to Brienne. She takes it. Brynden walks away.
Brienne said to Podrick, "Find the maester. We need to get a raven north to Sansa."
Podrick said, "What should I write?"
Brienne said, "Tell her I failed."
