Chapter 4

Mystic Falls, Virginia August 18, 2009

It was officially the first day of high school for Iris. What an amazing thought that was. Honestly, she never thought she would have made it this far alive. Iris still believes that Dumbledore had planned for her to die. After all of the tests that he had put her through in school and then being sent back to the Dursleys. No child should have to live like that. That was part of the reason she had planned to run and take Siri and Remy with her. Dobby was just a lovely little stow away.

Getting herself out of her own head, Iris got up to shower and get ready. She honestly couldn't believe she was going to a muggle high school. She wondered if it would be like those movies Dudley would watch.

She had spent the two months since they had gotten their papers trying to catch up. She was actually a smart person but was never allowed to do better than Dudley. Merlin forbid, the freak get better grades than perfect Dudders. Then at Hogwarts, she was never able to upstage Ron.

Iris could have started her Senior year but wanted to start as a Junior. She wanted to experience as much as she could while they were here. Hopefully she would meet people her own age and make actual friends. Nev and Luna were the only people she really had at Hogwarts and while she missed them, they still didn't know the real her.

Iris finished getting ready, checking her outfit to make sure she looked normal. She didn't really use makeup but added a little just to make herself feel better. Hoping for the best she grabbed her bookbag and headed out of her room.

Iris hopped down the stairs to find Sirius and Remus eating their breakfast. Dobby was setting her a plate down as she walked in.

"Goodmorning" Iris chirpped.

"Goodmorning" Both men replied.

Dobby came back with his own plate and sat down next to Iris.

"This looks delicious Dobby! Thank you!" Iris said.

Dobby smiled back, "Missy Iris needs a good breakfast for her first day"

Sirius looked at Iris and asked, "Are you nervous pup? It's a big change from Hogwarts."

"I think I'm going to like it. It can't be worse than Hogwarts, right?" Iris replied.

"Right" Remus said smiling

Iris finished eating and looked at the time, "I had better get going or I'll be late", standing up she gave both men a hug, she leaned down to hug Dobby.

"Have a good day and we will be at the shop so call if you need us" Sirius said. Iris waved at them as she drove off.

Driving to school, Iris put the top down wanting to enjoy the beautiful weather. It wasn't a long drive, so she arrived with plenty of extra time. She headed to the office to check in and get her schedule. She noticed all of the students staring at her as she walked by. Unfortunately, that was something she was used to. At least here it was for being new and not the 'Girl Who Lived'.

After getting her information she walked to her locker. Standing next to her locker was a beautiful blond girl, someone who could only be described as perky. As she opened her locker the girl stuck her hand out for Iris to shake.

"Hi! I'm Caroline Forbes, you must be new. I can help you out if you need. What's your name?" Caroline said all at once. Just from looking at this girl, you could tell she was someone who was a good person.

Iris took Carolines hand, letting go she smiled and said, "Hi, I'm Iris Black. I'm a new transfer from London."

Caroline looked ecstatic that the new girl seemed nice. Plus, she loved her accent. She asked Iris for her schedule to compare with hers, "Luckily I can be your buddy for the day. We have the same Junior classes. Do you play any sports or do extracurriculars? I'm Cheer Captain. We have tryouts after school if you want to come. You look like you're athletic."

Iris kind of just stared at her for a moment and then remembered to reply, "Oh, um maybe I can come and check out practice, see if I'm a fit?'

"Of course you can!" Caroline replied, "There's a couple of my friends, come meet them" Iris was then dragged by the hand over to meet two new people.

Caroline walked up to the first girl, " Elena, my god, how are you?" she asks, hugging Elena.

Elena looks to the other girl before responding to Caroline, " Thanks Caroline, I'm fine".

"Oh! I almost forgot, this is Iris Black. She just moved here from London. Iris, this is Bonnie Bennet and Elena Gilbert" Caroline introduces everyone. Iris waves to both girls and they begin to walk. Bonnie walks next to Iris and she feels like a dull spark is jumping from her skin. Iris tries to shake it off and keeps walking.

Elena sees something and heads off away from the group. The rest keep walking until Caroline suddenly stops, "Who is this?" she asks.

"I only see back" Bonnie replies. Iris is looking over her schedule and doesn't hear the whole conversation. Suddenly she notices the girls are quiet. Looking up she see they are all staring at a guy in the office. Iris watches them, amused. The guy walks out and both Caroline and Bonnie stare him down. Iris giggles at their reaction. Iris looks at him as he walks by, and she frowns. Iris and Caroline head to class. Trying to ignore the oddness of the other new student, something was different about him. She could almost feel as if he had a magic about him, it was the same with Bonnie.

After classes are done, Iris follows Caroline towards their lockers. Bonnie and Elena walk with them and the topic seems to be the new guy. Caroline joins the conversation, somehow she seemed to get his life story in the few hours since they had seen him and now. 'Shes better than the FBI' Iris thinks.

Caroline spins to look at Iris, "Please tell me you're coming to practice, we could always use another girl. Who knows, you might like it!" she pleads.

Iris replies, "I guess I can watch and see if it's something I might be able to do it". Caroline grabs her arm and pulls her along, smiling.

Since all three of the girls are on the cheer team, they walk together. Caroline is talking with Elena but Iris isn't paying attention. Her attention is on the football players heading out to practice on the giant field. It's all so new to her, it really does look like it does in movies. Iris hopes it's not as dramatic.

Iris must have missed something because Elena is walking off the field and towards the parking lot. She looks to Caroline who looks confused but snaps her eyes to Iris. "Looks like a spot is open if you want to try", Caroline says cheekily.

Iris is nervous but replies, "I guess I can try".

~~~~~~~~
Practice was interesting to say the least. Iris is in shape, from quidditch and running from Dudley and his gang. Honestly, she thought it was a lot of fun. Maybe this could be a good thing. Iris is getting ready to say goodbye when Caroline stops her.
"We are meeting up at the grill later. Please come with! It's the all-American experience. Please!!" Caroline pleads.
Iris laughs but agrees, "Okay I'll meet you there. I have to run by my uncles shop first and tell them where I'm going."
Caroline smiles, "Perfect! I'll meet you there in one hour. I have to change really quick."
"See you soon" Iris replies.
Iris drives to meet her uncles at the garage. She's actually excited to hang out with Caroline later. Now she just needs to see Siri and Remy.
~~~~~~~~

Pulling up to the garage she can see Siri through one of the open doors. Remy must be in the office. Iris runs up to Siri, hugging him from behind.

"Hey pup! So how was your first day of muggle high school? Didn't it end at three?" Sirius says, looking at the clock. Remus walks out hearing Sirius.

"School was really good, different but good. I'm late because I was somehow talked into becoming a cheerleader" Iris says looking at them both. Waiting.

Both men look back at her, then Sirius starts giggling. Remus smacks the back of his head then looks at Iris, "A cheerleader" he asks.

Iris smiles, "The first person I met today was Caroline. She is probably the most bubbly and happy person I have ever met. She's also Cheer Captain and somehow talked me into going to practice. Next thing I know, I'm on the team. I have a uniform and all!"

Remus smiles and Sirius lifts her up in a spin, "Oh pup, I'm so happy for you!" "I'm glad you made a friend" both say.

"I actually came by to ask if you cared that I met up with her and some other girls at the grill. Her friends Bonnie and Elena are going too." Iris asks.

"Of course you can go, just don't stay out to late and be safe" Remus replied. "Be sure to have fun too" Sirius adds.

Iris laughs and hugs them both, "Okay, I'll be home later! Love you guys"

"Love you pup" "Love you cub" both men say

~~~~~~~
Iris walks from her car up to the grill entrance, reaching towards the door another hand comes out and opens it. Looking up she notices the new guy holding the door and Elena standing with him.
"Oh, hi" Iris says "thanks"
"Hi Iris", Elena says, while quiet guy nods.
"I'm meeting up with Caroline, are you meeting her too?" Iris asks.
Elena nods while the new guy just stares past me. 'He is definitely not normal' Iris thinks. Iris walks up to the booth Caroline is sitting at and scoots into the same side. Elena and new guy sit across from us. I can see that something is upsetting her.
Caroline looks over to Iris, "I'm glad you could make it"
"My uncles were happy that I was hanging out with someone. My uncle Siri had a laugh at me trying out for cheerleading" Iris says.
Caroline smiles at Iris then asks, "How long have you been in Mystic Falls? I was visiting my dad over the summer, so I didn't notice anyone new in town until school."
"We moved to town almost four months ago. My uncles wanted to get me away from London because people were being horrible to us. Luckily, we found this quiet little town and now my uncles own the garage that just opened up. It's been a big change for all three of us" Iris replies.
Caroline gives her shoulder a squeeze, "Well I for one am happy you chose to live here. We need more people in this town"
Bonnie comes running into the grill, "Sorry I'm late, I got caught up with my grams."
Caroline smiles and then looks to new guy, "So Stefan, our other new kid" she proceeds to question him through a bit of the meal. Caroline, Bonnie and Elena take turns asking both new people questions. Everything is good until the parent question is brought up.
Bonnie looks to Iris, "So you said you're here with your uncles, what happened to your parents" she asks.
Iris knew the question would come up eventually, but it really was a mood killer. Taking a breath she answered, "They passed away in a car accident when I was a baby. My uncles adopted me and wanted to get away from the attention back home, so we moved here. Some people were really awful to us"
Knowing she needed to move the topic elsewhere, Bonnie looked to Stefan, "What about you" she asked.
"Both of my parents are dead" Stefan replies simply.
No one is really sure how to recover the conversation until Elena speaks up, "That's terrible. I'm sorry" it's meant for both Iris and Stefan, but everyone can tell she said it more towards him.
Caroline pops up with another question, "No siblings"
Iris laughs and replies, "I'm an only child, unless you count my uncle Siri. Uncle Remy would definitely say he's another child"
Caroline and Bonnie laugh at that. Elena looks to Stefan for his answer.
Stefans's answer is another simple on, "None that I speak to"
Knowing that she needed to get home, Iris motions to Caroline. Standing she says, "I should probably head home, thank you for today Caroline, it was great" Waving goodbye to everyone she heads out the door.
As Iris is trying to unlock her car she sees Stefan come out of the grill. Quietly getting in, she sits there and watches him for a minute. Something is definitely off about this guy. From where he is standing on the sidewalk, he looks around and then he's gone. How? She knows only three magicals live in this world so what exactly is Stefan Salvatore.
