Chapter Text

Ochako stood under the shower in the girls locker room, washing away the dirt and grime from their unsuccessful rescue training. Her thoughts and emotions were all over the place as she tried to process the events of that afternoon.

Recovery Girl had fixed up her sprained ankle and the rest of her scrapes and bruises in no more than three seconds, just as she had done with Bakugou's broken leg and other minor injuries. After making sure everything was in order, Ochako was given some candy and sent on her way. Recovery Girl had insisted that Bakugou stay for a few more hours - despite his very loud and aggressive protests - in order to make sure that he recovered fully from his concussion, so Ochako had left without him.

And that's how she found herself left alone with her thoughts, the locker room already empty of her fellow classmates. Today hadn't been more difficult than any other training, necessarily, and it wasn't that uncommon for someone to get hurt or for an accident to occur during their hero classes, but something about it still affected her more than usual. She couldn't figure out exactly what she was feeling but decided that it was just the whirlwind of everything that had happened that was causing the jumbled mess inside her mind. She would probably figure out her weird feelings after clearing her head a little more and getting some food in her belly.

After cleaning herself up and gathering her things, she met Tsu, Deku, and Iida for dinner in hopes of having a fun and relaxing evening. But, as dinner went on, she found that she was having difficulty paying attention to her friends as her thoughts swirled chaotically through her mind. She even failed to notice when the conversation slowed, the others exchanging glances of concern with one another.

"Is everything okay, Uraraka?" Deku asked, finally getting her attention.

Deku was Ochako's best friend - anyone with eyes could see that. She admired him, and being his friend inspired her to do more; take risks, and be the best hero that she could be. She was really grateful to him, and it would be a lie to say that he didn't hold a special place in her heart.

However, her feelings for him were not romantic ones. She had thought so at first, just as most of her fellow classmates likely did, but something inside her knew that it was just admiration and the excitement spurred on by their shared trauma causing her to have her first crush. When she had decided to let go of those feelings it was actually much easier than she had anticipated. Thinking of Deku as just a friend rather than as someone she was in love with came so naturally that when it finally hit her how silly her crush had been she couldn't help but laugh. It's not that she didn't love Deku; in fact, that was the opposite of the truth. But she wasn't in love with him. She loved him in the same way she loved Iida and Tsu; not romantically, but as a best friend. Once she had realized her true feelings she even worked up the courage to talk to him about it and it turned out that he had been feeling exactly the same way. Maybe in another universe they were meant to be together, but in their reality they knew now that their friendship was the most important thing to both of them.

No matter what her feelings towards Deku were, it didn't change the fact that he was someone she cared for and trusted with her whole heart. Which is why when his question finally registered through her brain fog, she was able to answer it honestly, her thoughts suddenly becoming clearer.

"Yeah, I'm okay. Sorry guys," she said, rubbing the back of her head in embarrassment. "Today's just been a long day."

"You've seemed a little spaced out since you got back from the infirmary, ribbit. Did something bad happen while you were trapped in the mountain?" Tsu asked.

"No, nothing serious really, besides Bakugou getting injured obviously. But that wasn't too big of a deal and Recovery Girl was able to patch him right up. It was just…" How could she phrase it without making them worry? "Weird, I guess."

"What do you mean?" asked Iida. "Did he say something rude to you?"

She laughed which seemed to relax her friends a bit. "Well, yeah, he's Bakugou after all. But nothing worse than usual. That's actually why it was a little weird. At first, he was his normal, explosive, shouty self, but then he seemed to change. He came up with a really good plan and didn't insult me or Aoyama for pretty much all of the training, at least up until we were trapped anyway."

"Really?" Asked Iida and Tsu, both looking skeptical.

"Yeah. I think he's finally taking some criticism to heart and learning how to be a better team player. He still tried to take charge but he's a natural leader so that isn't something he could easily break from I think. But at certain points, usually when we were rescuing a dummy, he would listen to me and actually follow my lead. It's like… he knows I want to be a rescue hero, obviously, and he could tell that I knew what I was doing. He listened to my instructions and did what I asked... for the most part."

"That is a little weird," said Deku, rubbing his chin contemplatively, "but not completely unexpected. He has been getting friendlier this past year. Well maybe not friendlier, but definitely less hostile. And he's been more inclined towards working with others, especially after fighting against the Paranormal Liberation Front. He did take the hit for me from Shigaraki during that fight. Endeavor actually touched on that a lot while we were working at his agency, because he also isn't the best at teamwork, and I think he secretly attributes that as a part of the reason why he was never able to surpass All Might. Kacchan's really strong, but nobody is perfect at everything so I wouldn't be surprised if he's starting to realize that other people have strengths he doesn't, and you are the best rescue hero in our class, so he was probably taking that into account. He's never been the best at first aid on others, and he's more of a fists-first type of hero, so we all know rescue training really isn't his strong suit, and-"

"Midoriya, you're rambling again," Tsu said.

"Oh, sorry!" He rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment, mimicking Ochako's earlier gesture, and focused his attention back on her.

"It's okay, Deku. And I agree with everything you said, but that's not actually what was so weird to me. I mean, it was weird for sure, but I've seen him growing and changing in other training sessions so I wasn't too surprised. What really struck me was when we were caved in. He completely blacked out at first, but once he was awake it was strange. He was still talking like his usual self, cursing and calling me weird nicknames, but there were certain times when he was actually…. Kinda nice?" Saying it out loud sounded odd, but now that she was thinking over his actions in her head she didn't have any other word to describe it. "At least kinda nice by 'Bakugou' standards."

"That is rather odd," said Iida. "Perhaps it was a positive side effect of his concussion, and for our sake let's hope he stays that way." He looked proud of his attempted humor as Ochako and Tsu giggled.

"Maybe," Ochako said when she had relaxed a bit more, "but honestly it didn't feel like it at the time. He asked me about my injuries and, until we started fighting towards the end, it seemed like he actually wanted to have a conversation. Every time there was a short period of silence he would ask me another question. I don't really know what to make of it."

Tsu looked slightly concerned again. "You got in a fight, ribbit?"

"Well not really a fight, but you know how arguing with Bakugou goes. And after that we didn't talk much at all, and he was completely silent in the infirmary besides yelling at Recovery Girl that his concussion was fine and he didn't need to stay." She sighed, pushing around the last few pieces of food on her plate. "Maybe I'm just overthinking things, but I wish he could be more like that all the time. It was kind of fun talking with him."

"I think we would all like that, but I don't know if Bakugou will ever change that much," said Iida, offering her a small smile.

"You're probably right, Iida. But…" She trailed off, lost in her thoughts again. Would her friends judge her for feeling this way? Was it worth it to even mention? She herself felt like she was strange for feeling like this.

But she was done second-guessing herself. Deku's determination this past year and everything they had all gone through together encouraged her to be honest and not leave anything to regret. Deku smiled at her, waiting for her to continue, and she knew that no matter what she decided he would be there to support her.

"I think I'm going to try and become better friends with Bakugou," she said, solidifying her determination.

Iida and Tsu briefly shared shocked expressions, but after a second their faces relaxed and they nodded at her.

The grin on Deku's face could power the sun as he excitedly said, "I think that's a great idea, Uraraka!" Leave it to her best friend to always make her feel at ease.

Her mind made up, she finished her dinner as the topic changed to a discussion about the homework they needed to finish that night. She quickly glanced around, looking for her explosive classmate, but Bakugou was nowhere to be seen. Either he was still in the infirmary or he wasn't hungry.

She would just have to try talking to him tomorrow.

The morning came and Ochako, though confident in her decision, was feeling a little nervous; talking with Bakugou was normally anything but easy, and just because she was motivated that didn't automatically mean he would play nice. It took her a little longer than normal to get ready for the day, but she eventually made her way to class with Deku and Tsu, secretly hoping that Bakugou wasn't still angry from yesterday.

When she arrived there was a cute little package on her desk that turned out to be a small cheese platter wrapped in iridescent plastic and tied with an excessively glittery bow. The note on the gift said "Je suis désolé mon amie !" There was an identical package on Bakugou's desk, but he definitely hadn't arrived yet, or she suspected the gift would have been immediately tossed into the trash.

Aoyama made his way over to her desk and bashfully repeated his apology to her, clearly feeling guilty about yesterday's training mishap.

"Please don't worry about it, Aoyama! It wasn't your fault, these things just happen. It's part of the risk of becoming a hero," she said, patting his arm gently.

Placated by her gesture, he returned to his seat, glancing towards the door every few seconds no doubt mentally preparing for whatever insults Bakugou had ready to throw at him.

But when Bakugou did arrive a few minutes later, he didn't approach Aoyama or even his own desk, instead making a beeline directly towards Ochako herself. Was he going to chew her out for yesterday? She hadn't done anything wrong, but leave it to Bakugou to find something to yell about.

"Good morning, Bakugou," she managed to choke out mostly normally as he stopped, looming over her, a very dense aura seeping out of his every pore. She knew her surprise was evident on her face based on his scowl and the way his lip curled as he dropped a paper bag unceremoniously onto her desk.

He breathed aggressively out of his nose in place of an actual greeting as he shoved his hands into his pockets. Ochako figured that was the best she was going to get, but it was better than nothing so she couldn't complain. Reaching into the bag she pulled out her gym uniform jacket that she'd used to stop the blood flow in his leg yesterday. It was slightly damp but completely clean and very neatly folded. As she held it, she noticed it smelled like a much fancier brand of detergent than she normally used.

"Thanks," Bakugou grunted. "For the tourniquet."

"Oh," she said, blinking up at him. "You're welcome."

"Your first aid and crisis response ain't totally shit, but you should be careful floating someone who's unconscious before you know how severe their head trauma is." Even though their other classmates had all paused their conversations to watch the unfamiliar scene his eye contact didn't waver, his glare focused on her.

"Um, thank you." His expression was anything but happy, but Ochako was actually rather pleased with the way this conversation was going. He had so far thanked her, given her constructive feedback, and given her a compliment. Sort of. She couldn't help but think back to Iida's joke that this was simply a positive side effect of his concussion, but she'd take what she could get for now. "And I know, I was careful to support your head and only moved you a few feet away to avoid any more falling rocks. But how did you know I floated you? I thought you still weren't awake at that point."

"Tch," was all he gave in response. She thought she noticed the tops of his ears become slightly pink, but she had to be imagining things. "I washed it. It's still kinda wet so hang it to dry or whatever."

Evidently he was done with the conversation because he turned around to head to his own desk before she could say anything else. She unfolded her jacket, draping it over the back of her chair to dry during class, her heart rate increasing in excitement.

"What the hell is this?!"

Oh. He'd found the cheese.

"That is an apology gift from me," Aoyama said, adopting his nervous demeanor from yesterday, looking anywhere but directly at Bakugou.

"Hah?! Don't apologize! Just learn to control your fuckin' quirk!" Bakugou yelled as he did what Ochako could only describe as the sitting equivalent of aggressively stomping his feet (butt?) into his chair. "I'm not eating this crap!"

Aoyama clearly didn't want to upset Bakugou further, so he simply said "Oui!" and sat down at his own desk.

Ochako watched Bakugou shove the cheese platter into his bag and wondered if he was maybe just unsure how to accept an apology. He was obviously uncomfortable with most friendly interactions and was actually a bit socially awkward once you got past the Baku-rage. But, she noticed that he didn't immediately throw the cheese away.

Deciding that there wasn't going to be any other morning drama, her classmates all resumed their conversations while waiting for their teacher to arrive. Ochako once again found herself lost in thought, thinking of how she could kick off plan 'Befriend Bakugou Katsuki'. Talking with him more would probably be a good start.

The last class before lunch was almost over and Ochako wished the time would go just a little bit faster. She hadn't eaten breakfast that morning because she had been so nervous about confronting Bakugou and now she was regretting it. Her stomach grumbled at the thought of lunch and the fancy cheese waiting in her bag.

Not wanting to start drooling all over her notebook, she returned her attention to the front of the classroom just as Present Mic Sensei was finishing up the lesson and assigning that night's homework.

"Alright, listeners, that's the end of our show for today! Don't forget you have a quiz tomorrow, so make sure you tune in to your textbooks when studying later! Have a good lunch, yo!" Ochako was used to her teacher's yelling by now and was honestly just glad that this year his class was right before lunch and not first thing in the morning. He gathered up his materials but turned back before leaving the classroom to add, "Oh, Aoyama, Bakugou, and Uraraka, could you three please head over to the teachers office before you eat? Eraserhead wants to speak with you."

Ochako and Aoyama agreed while Bakugou grunted noncommittally. He left the classroom first after Present Mic, and Uraraka nearly had to run to catch up with him, quickly telling Iida and Tsu she would meet them at Lunch Rush.

The three of them, Aoyama bringing up the rear, knocked on the door for the teachers office and waited for Aizawa Sensei to call them in.

"How are the three of you feeling?" their teacher asked when they finally entered the office.

"Much better, Sensei."

"Magnifique !"

"Hungry. Let's just get to the point."

Leave it to Bakugou to be rude, even to a teacher.

Aizawa Sensei - who was clearly used to Bakugou's attitude by now, and also never one to waste too much time on small talk - obliged his request.

"You three were unable to finish the rescue training yesterday. Based on what you were able to accomplish, you won't get a failing grade, but you won't get very high marks either. I know that, as future pros, this is probably not acceptable to you, so you will have an optional 30-minute supplementary rescue exercise after class today."

Though he said it was optional, Ochako got the impression that not attending the supplementary training would be a bad idea - not that any of them would skip out on it anyway.

She and Aoyama nodded while Bakugou offered his usual, "Tch," but didn't argue. Aizawa dismissed them, and as they made their way to Lunch Rush Ochako's gaze fell to Bakugou walking in front of her. There was no way he would miss the optional training; his grades had to be perfect for him to achieve his goals and meet the incredibly high standards he set for himself. Maybe she could try and talk with him some more afterward.

"I am sorry again, you two. It is because of me that we have to attend this extra training," Aoyama said, his head hung low.

"I said don't apologize. Just get better." Bakugou's hands were in his pockets as he walked ahead of them, but Ochako noticed his words didn't hold their usual bite. He was direct but he wasn't going out of his way to be mean. She couldn't help but get that same feeling she got during the rescue training. Was he being… nice? Again?

"I think what Bakugou means is that it wasn't your fault the cave-in happened. Anyone could have caused it," she added, offering Aoyama a friendly smile which he returned.

"Whatever, Pink Cheeks," Bakugou grumbled. Though she couldn't see his face, she imagined him rolling his eyes. "Belly Button, perfect your aim so that shit doesn't happen in a real rescue."

There it was again. Bakugou was trying to encourage Aoyama, not tear him down; he was offering feedback and encouraging him to improve. Sure, he was doing it in his usual gruff Bakugou Katsuki way, but he wasn't insulting Aoyama or just yelling at him for no reason. Her resolve strengthened. Bakugou wasn't a bad person; he was rough around the edges but underneath there was someone who was just determined to succeed and confident in his abilities, and Ochako could respect that.

"Merci," Aoyama said as they parted ways, running off back to the classroom to eat before Bakugou's explosive attitude inevitably returned.

Ochako continued to follow Bakugou for the remainder of their short walk to Lunch Rush. Too late, she realized that this would have been the perfect time to initiate her plan and try talking to him in a more friendly setting. She looked up to try and catch his attention but he was already gone, heading to his own friend group. She would just have to return to her idea of trying to talk to him after training.

Her decision made, she bought lunch and found her way to her usual table, sitting in the spot saved for her between Todoroki and Tsu. Though she wasn't as absentminded as she had been during dinner the previous night, she kept finding herself glancing over to Bakugou's table. It would have been impossible to make out their conversation, but she could tell that his friends were all joking around and laughing while Bakugou yelled at them, back to his usual explosive self. Ochako grinned to herself as Ashido pulled the cheese out of his bag and Kaminari started eating it enthusiastically, reminding her about her own cheesy gift.

As she offered some to her friends, she couldn't help but notice Bakugou grumpily eating his too.

After hero course ended for the day, Ochako, Aoyama, and Bakugou waited together in U.S.J. for Aizawa Sensei's instructions. Ochako was tired from the day, but she was still ready for whatever supplementary training their teacher had in store.

Bakugou, though visibly annoyed, didn't look nearly as tired as she felt. Was he ever unprepared?

"For your supplementary lesson you will be doing a similar training to yesterday. Since you've already rescued three civilians, this time you will also only have to find and rescue three. Everything else will be the same, except you'll only have three minutes to plan your strategy since you've worked together already." Aizawa Sensei turned to leave before adding, "Oh, and today you will be in the Downpour Zone. Good luck."

Downpour wasn't too bad. The rain would cause surfaces to become more slippery, but there wasn't too much risk of things collapsing. And her quirk would work just as well in this zone as it had in the mountain zone. This would be a piece of cake! They would just have to avoid their previous mistakes and the rescue would be finished in no time.

Taking charge had worked out pretty well for her last time so she decided to give it a shot again. "I think this time we should all stick together instead of splitting up. There won't be any crazy caves and we will be safer in an ambush if we're all together."

Bakugou looked her up and down, a scowl on his face. "Don't act like you always got the best ideas, Round Face. I was gunna say the same thing."

Okay, so maybe his attitude wasn't totally better, but there was no yelling so that was a good start.

"Mon Amie," Aoyama said, turning towards Uraraka. "I think that we've only passed so far because of Bakugou's plan and your teamwork yesterday, but I was still not much use. I would like to play a bigger role today if that is okay?"

Though Aoyama had asked Ochako, Bakugou responded before she could even open her mouth. "Fine. You and Uraraka can do the rescue bullshit, and I'll guard your backs." He turned away, but Ochako was close enough that she thought she could hear him mumble, "I'm not as good at that shit anyway." She must have misheard; there was no way he would actually admit to that, so she chalked it up to her imagination.

"Fantastique ! Any injured civilians will be so charmed by my twinkling that they will recover immediately," Aoyama said, winking at her as she chuckled along, awkwardly.

Bakugou clenched his teeth and stormed towards the downpour zone, Ochako and Aoyama hurrying behind him. Despite the fact that he was definitely in a typical angry-Bakugou mood, Ochako suspected things were going to go well because he still hadn't yelled even once.

Just like Ochako had predicted, things were going relatively smoothly. Though they were all soaked to the bone and freezing, she and Aoyama had easily rescued the first dummy (who had some 'fractured ribs') from underneath a fallen lamppost with her quirk and their combined first aid knowledge. The second dummy was more of a challenge to find because it was trapped inside a broom closet (and marked as 'stabbed in the abdomen'). But, once they found its location, Bakugou ripped the door off its hinges - causing only minimal property damage - and granted them easy access to save the fake bystander.

Things were going well. Too well. Which, despite the fact that she tried to always look on the bright side, should have been a big red flag to Ochako that something was about to go horribly wrong.

The trouble finally came when they found their last dummy.

It was on top of the tallest building in the zone, its injury labeled as 'severe head trauma (conscious)'. "Floating them down will be difficult. If there was a flat surface, like a ramp, I could more easily support their head, but I wouldn't risk that 25 stories up. I think we're going to have to find something we can use like a stretcher to support them so that they can be transported," Ochako whispered to her teammates, looking around for anything that could be of use.

"I will go look in the building, Mon Amie! I think I saw a coffee table in a conference room that we could use!" Aoyama excitedly ran into the stairwell before either she or Bakugou could answer.

"I thought we weren't splitting up," she sighed as she turned to 'tend' to the dummy's other injuries and 'reassure the civilian' that everything was okay while Bakugou stood guard. "Everything will be okay, don't worry. My companion just went to get a stretcher so that we can transport you to the hospital. Just keep taking deep breaths and focus on me," she said to no one in her cheeriest hero voice.

She should have seen it coming, but things were going too well and she had gotten too confident. Plus, she was frozen solid thanks to the intense rain - her mind just wasn't in the right place.

Without warning she was aggressively shoved out of the way by Bakugou as he exploded one of Ectoplasm's clones that had been silently coming right for her. She didn't have time to think as another clone attacked, causing her to grunt in strained effort as she blocked punch after kick, unable to get a hit in herself. Her combat skills had been improving, but she still wasn't fast enough.

How would she be able to defend civilians if she couldn't even take on one villain by herself? Fighting Toga during the war had been a challenge even though she had faced her in the past, and she was just a teenager, like Ochako herself, and probably not formally trained in any type of hand-to-hand combat. Who knew what kinds of extremely capable villains Ochako would have to face in the future? She needed to be better than this. Her frustration was getting to her, and the rain on the roof was distracting and preventing her from getting her footing.

Finally, she saw an opening and was about to take it when her sneaker slipped out from under her and she fell flat on her butt. Determined not to lose, she ignored the pain and rolled to the side in an attempt to get back up, but before she could a hand reached in front of her, grabbing Ectoplasm's clone by the wrist and flipping him onto the ground. Bakugou let off another explosion in the clone's face, ending him on the spot.

Ochako's breathing was heavy as the adrenaline coursed through her body, trying to escape. She frantically looked around but there were no more attackers, allowing her a second to catch her breath and calm down - just enough time for her emotions to register.

She was furious.

At herself, at the 'villains', at the situation, at Bakugou - no, that wasn't right. She was just mad at herself. Because she had been too slow. He had just done his job to help her, and -

"Why did you interfere? I had that!" She yelled before she could stop herself, stomping over to Bakugou's side as he made a half-assed attempt to 'look over' the person they were rescuing for further injuries.

Why was she yelling at him? That's not what she'd intended on doing.

"No you didn't," he grunted, not bothering to look at her.

"I would have gotten him!"

Rationally, she knew she wasn't mad at Bakugou and that he didn't deserve to be yelled at. But logic was the last thing on her mind right now. He was the only thing there to take her anger out on, and her adrenaline was still too high from the fight.

"Back off, Round Face!" He was also yelling now, his glare piercing through her soul. He shoved his finger into her chest, his expression furious. "I just fuckin' saved your ass because no, you wouldn't have gotten him! Anyway, I thought we were supposed to be on a fuckin' team! I'm the bodyguard! I was doing my damn job! Don't be pissed at me because you were too slow!"

Okay, now she was a little pissed at Bakugou, too.

"Don't look down on me!" Her fists balled at her sides as she stood her ground, defiant. "I could have handled it!"

"I ain't looking down on you, I'm just tellin' you the facts! If you wanna get better at combat, you have to work on combat training!"

"I am working on combat training!"

"Then train harder!"

She couldn't believe how furious she was; she normally never allowed herself to get this angry, but something about the situation caused her to snap. Maybe it was the freezing rain, or the fact that she was upset with herself for not being at the skill level she wanted to be at. Maybe it was because she was sick of people thinking all she was good at was rescue. Or maybe it was simply because Bakugou's lack of yelling throughout the training had caused her to need to fill the void.

Whatever it was, she wasn't thinking.

She was about to fire back at him again, something about him being a total jerk with an awful attitude, when Aoyama appeared on the roof, out of breath and clutching a coffee table.

"I heard shouting, is everything okay?"

With a seconds pause, her thoughts had the opportunity to catch up, and she realized that she didn't have time to be upset right now. She shoved her anger down as she got to work securing the dummy to the makeshift stretcher and floated it, herself, and Aoyama back to the street. She didn't offer to float Bakugou, who jumped off the roof on his own, using a blast to cushion his landing.

By the time the training was over she had calmed down significantly, and during Aizawa's debrief she was thoroughly embarrassed with herself.

"Good work, you all did relatively well. Aoyama, good observational skills and quick thinking. Next time try to increase your physical speed," Aizawa Sensei said as Aoyama nodded along, a smug look on his face while stars somehow twinkled around him.

"Bakugou, excellent job on filling your role in the team and taking down the villains. You were successful in having your teammates back, but you still need to work on your rescue abilities and demeanor around civilians. I thought you would have learned that lesson during the provisional licensing exam, though you weren't yelling at the dummy so it didn't impact your score too harshly." Bakugou simply grunted and folded his arms.

"And Uraraka, great rescue work as usual, but surprisingly you also need to work on your demeanor." She knew it was coming, but that didn't make it any less mortifying. "At this point, I shouldn't have to tell you that fighting with a partner in front of someone you're trying to rescue is inappropriate. I don't usually expect that kind of behavior from you, so it won't significantly impact your score, but it better not happen again. Also, continue working on your close combat skills; you've improved but still have a long way to go if you want to make hand-to-hand combat a strong part of your repertoire."

"Yes, sensei. Sorry," she said quietly, bowing her head as her mortification reached its peak.

"Regardless, you've all passed. You're free to go."

Ochako gathered her things and ran to the locker room to shower and change. Her teacher was right; she wasn't sure what had come over her, but she had acted ridiculously. Why would Bakugou want to become better friends with someone who yelled at him for helping her?

But Bakugou's words and her teacher's advice had given her an idea of how they could interact more and get to know each other better. She would have to hurry and apologize to him or he would never agree to her proposition.

Notes: I know these first two chapters were mostly set-up, but starting next chapter we finally get into the "plot" of this nonsense fic!
