(In the morning, Ichigo is dreaming about the night of his mother's death, as he is awakened by the Mod Soul, now a stuffed lion, and is named Kon.)
Kon: Hey! Wake up, Ichigo! The sun's out! You know that means… It's morning! Hey, let me go!
(Ichigo grabs Kon and throws him across the room.)
Ichigo: I thought I told you to act like a normal stuffed animal, Kon! You're probably wondering why a stuffed animal is moving right now? I guess this is where the problem begins. Am I right? This stuffed animal is… Yeah… That guy… After the Mod Soul Incident, we had to find a body for him, so we looked around the city for a bit. We didn't want to put him into a living body because the soul would be pushed out like mine was. It was much harder to find fresh corpses than we thought. Then we found an abandoned teddy bear that we found on the street and put him into it. There were mixed results… It didn't even need an organic body! What a twist. We decided to call him "Kon," because he's a mod soul.
(Kon then gets back up.)
Kon: Ow! I told you to be kind to me! You know how-
(Rukia then gets out of the closet as she yells at Ichigo for bothering her.)
Rukia: Will you stop bothering me, Ichigo! Can't a Shinigami get dressed up in peace?!
(She looks down to see Kon staring at her panties.)
Kon: You're fine… Stay right here!
(She then stomps on him.)
Kon: Ah! Stop! My stuffing's coming out!
Yuzu: Ichigo!
(Yuzu calls out to Ichigo as he hides Kon and Rukia in the closet.)
Yuzu: Mind if I come in?
Ichigo: Sure!
Yuzu: Ichigo, what are you doing?
Ichigo: N-Nothing! What do you want, Yuzu?! It's early in the morning!
Yuzu: It's not that early! Mizuiro is waiting for you outside!
Ichigo: Mizuiro? What time is it? Oh, shit!
Yuzu: Hurry up and get ready. And apologize to Mizuiro from Dad's window. He's waiting for you.
Ichigo: Sorry, Mizuiro! I just woke up! Can you come in for a minute?
Mizuiro: Sure.
Ichigo: The memories of the incident that Kon caused were erased from the mind of my classmates. Rukia says that Mr. Hat and Clogs told me his name, but I forgot about it somehow. But I'm glad that I forgot his name. He's just better as Mr. Hat and Clogs.
Rukia: Bye, Ichigo! See you at school!
Ichigo: Yeah. Why didn't Dad wake me up?! He usually barges in and-
(Ichigo looks at his Apple Watch as he sees the date and time.)
Rukia: What is it? What's with the look?
Ichigo: It's nothing. Wow… Tomorrow's the day…
Rukia: Ichigo?
(Cut to Karakura High School as Orihime and her friends are doing an art challenge.)
Michiru: Tatsuki! You're in art, right?!
Tatsuki: Yeah.
Michiru: Did you do the "My Future" assignment?
Tatsuki: Yeah, why?
Michiru: Can I see it? Mine's very bad.
Tatsuki: Yeah, sure.
(Tatsuki pulls out her drawing which shows her as a wrestler holding a championship belt.)
Michiru: Wow! This is great!
Tatsuki: I'm gonna be a Vale Tudo champion!
Michiru: Mine's so bad I can't even show it… What did you draw, Orihime?
Orihime: I'm glad you asked! I'm most likely proud of it!
Michiru: I wonder what she drew…
(Orihime pulls out her drawing which shows her as a robot in an apocalyptic future, shocking Tatsuki and Michiru.)
Orihime: Maximum Speed: 240 miles per hour! Flames of 20,000 degrees shoot from the mouth, and my eyes can project destruction beams!
Michiru: No, Orihime! That's not what the assignment's about!
Tatsuki: You'll probably get detention again! Or jail time!
(Orihime then sees Ichigo only for him to respond suspiciously nice.)
Orihime: Ichigo!
Ichigo: Hey, Orihime! How's your day going?
Michiru: Huh? Why is Ichigo acting all friendly?!
Orihime: I don't know… But something seems off.
Michiru: What do you mean? I have never seen him smile like that before…
Tatsuki: Michiru… What day is it?
Michiru: Um, June 16th. Why?
Tatsuki: I see. Orihime… You're very perceptive. It took me three years to find out. If you have anything to do with Ichigo, finish it today. Because Ichigo won't be at school tomorrow.
(Cut to Kurosaki Clinic as the family discusses the trip they'll be taking.)
Sign: We regret to inform you that the facility will be closed on June 17th. We're sorry for the loss of life or any inconvenience. -Kurosaki Clinic
Isshin: All right! Let's have a conference and go over everyone's job for tomorrow! And as chairman, I make the decisions!
Karin: What kind of meeting even is this?!
Isshin: If you want to speak, raise your hand, Chief of Staff!
Karin: Chief of Staff…
Isshin: Yuzu, you'll be in charge of lunch, as usual.
Yuzu: Okay.
Isshin: Karin, you carry the luggage.
Karin: What?!
Isshin: And Ichigo, you're in charge of security.
Ichigo: Got it.
Isshin: I also got a haircut for this event. How do I look?
Karin: Exactly the same!
(Cut to Ichigo's room as Rukia talks about the family meeting.)
Rukia: That sounded fun.
Ichigo: What?
Rukia: The family meeting. So, you're skipping school and going on a picnic, right?
Ichigo: Look, Rukia… About my Shinigami duties… Can I take a day off?
Rukia: What? Taking a day off?! Of course not! What's been going on with you?! You've been acting weird today.
Ichigo: Tomorrow… It's the anniversary of my mother's death. No… Not the day she died… The day she was killed.
(Cut to commercial: KEYWORD: Kon)
(After commercial: KEYWORD: June 17th)
(Cut to the next day, as the Kurosaki family are exhausted from walking up the hill.)
Yuzu: Ugh! This hill is very tough!
Karin: Not for me!
Isshin: You can make it, Yuzu! Let me show you! See! I can walk the rest of the way with my hands!
Karin: Don't make eye contact, Yuzu. Attention is the only thing that encourages him.
Isshin: That's not true. I don't need attention to run with my hands, I'm just self-motivated!
Karin: Run!
(Isshin then slips and is kicked by Karin.)
Yuzu: Woah! Dad slipped!
Karin: Hat kick!
Isshin: Knockout! Due to my knockout, there will be chaos at the Tokyo stock market!
Karin: You can start from the bottom!
Ichigo: Phew! It's June and it's already hot. This day is another June 17th, but it's a lot different from that day.
Yuzu: Hey… We got another visitor. I think she also came to see Mom.
Karin: Maybe. She's turning this way.
(Ichigo turns around to see Rukia waving at them.)
Ichigo: What on earth is she doing here?!
Yuzu: She's waving at us. Is that a friend of yours, Ichigo?
Ichigo: No! I've never seen her before!
Karin: She looks kinda familiar…
Ichigo: Oh, now I remember! We were best friends back in junior high! We were like brother and sister! It's been a while! Give us some time alone! You guys go ahead to Mom's grave!
Yuzu: Okay! See you, Ichigo!
Karin: I guess it's time that we give Ichigo some space! He's at that age now.
(Cut to Tatsuki as Orihime comes to see her.)
Tatsuki: Oh… Hey, Orihime!
Orihime: Hey, Tatsuki! Is it alright if I could come in?
Tatsuki: Sure…
Orihime: I need to ask you about something.
Tatsuki: What is it?
Orihime: You looked concerned about Ichigo yesterday… So, I wanted to ask you about Ichigo's childhood.
(Tatsuki looks at Orihime shocked but also worried at the same time.)
Tatsuki: Orihime… I think you might want to get some snacks for this one. I sometimes wonder when he stopped smiling?
(Cut to a young Tatsuki and Ichigo as they do karate.)
Tatsuki: I met him when we were four, at the dojo we usually go to. He had the brightest hair and the biggest smile. He also has a beautiful mother who he always holds hands with. He was slender and smiled all the time. He was a very weak kid, as well. Every time he loses, he starts crying. I was basically the first in the dojo to make him cry. However… As soon as he sees his mother coming to pick him up, he'll put on this huge grin. I always hated that… What kind of kid smiles after he loses? Every time I see that grin, I think. What a baby clinging on to his mommy. But, he was so happy. His smile was also nice. But that's how he was in the beginning.
(Cut to Ichigo as he yells at Rukia for coming to him.)
Ichigo: What the hell are you doing here?!
Rukia: You idiot! You're gonna need my help if a Hollow shows up.
Ichigo: But, couldn't you've been more sneakier?!
Rukia: Sorry. Never thought about it.
Ichigo: Are you mad?
Rukia: No. I'm confused. You said she was "killed," right. Who killed her?
Ichigo: I never said that. Just drop the act.
Rukia: You told me that you saw ghosts at a very young age. So tell me this. Was your mother killed by a Hollow? It's possible! If you have enough spiritual pressure to be able to see ghosts as a kid, a Hollow might have accidental-
Ichigo: You've gotta be fucking kidding me! You don't know anything. Why does everything have to do with Hollows with you? That's crazy. To blame a Hollow… That didn't happen!
(Ichigo then sees a young girl watching them, shocking him even more.)
Ichigo: What the hell is she doing here?
Rukia: Who?
(Ichigo then runs away as Rukia looks behind her to see the girl disappearing.)
Rukia: There's no one there… Did she run away? Ichigo! Wait up!
(Rukia catches up to Ichigo and throws him on the ground.)
Rukia: Why did you run like that?!
Ichigo: It wasn't a Hollow that killed my mom… It was me…
(Cut back to Tatsuki and Orihime as she continues telling her Ichigo's story.)
Tatsuki: His mother died when he was nine. I was also nine but I didn't understand. He hasn't shown up to school for a few weeks. So I searched for him. I found him by the river where she died. Walking around with his backpack every morning and night. It was like he was looking for her. I couldn't even bear to see Ichigo like that.
(Cut to Karin as she prays at her mom, Masaki's grave.)
Karin: It's been a while, Mom… How have you been? Well, you're dead. So not good, I guess. We're all fine. Me, Ichigo, Yuzu… But Dad over there is also doing well and it's annoying.
Isshin: It's time for the annual "Kurosaki Family Tombstone Dominoes Tournament!" Two and a half hours of family fun and tombstone dominoes! The first match is Ichigo vs me! Losers have to be the winner's servants for a week!
Yuzu: Dad, stop!
(Cut to Rukia as she looks over them, thinking about what Ichigo had said.)
Ichigo: It was me…
Rukia: Ichigo would never kill his own mother. It was probably a homicide or an accident. It's possible! A Hollow might have accidentally- I'm such an idiot.
(Kon then comes out of her backpack.)
Kon: Rukia!
Rukia: What is it, Kon? I didn't say you could come out yet.
Kon: C'mon, Rukia. It's so hot and stuffy here. Have some sympathy on me! Let's go home. Ichigo wants to be left alone today, anyway.
Rukia: I told you already… I need to stay close to him just in case a Hollow shows up. That's my duty.
Kon: I knew it. It's always Hollows with you! There's nothing even here! Let's just go!
Rukia: I think you're right.
(Cut to Ichigo standing over his mother's grave and flashback to the time where he told Tatsuki that he could see ghosts.)
Tatsuki: Is it true, Ichigo? Can you really see ghosts?
Ichigo: Of course not.
Tatsuki: That's what I thought. Those guys were full of crap. Mikami told me that you could see something that no one else sees. She told me they were ghosts.
Ichigo: Haha… I've seen ghosts for as long as I can remember. I saw them so clearly that I couldn't tell if they were dead or alive. People sometimes ask questions like that. I usually just laugh it off, then they drop it. I didn't think it was a problem… until that day.
(Cut to a young Ichigo walking with his mother, Masaki in the rain as he gets splashed by a truck.)
Masaki: That mean old truck! Are you okay, Ichigo? I'm so sorry. Let's switch sides
Ichigo: No! I'm fine! My raincoat always keeps me dry.
ICHIGO KUROSAKI, AGE 9
JUNE 17TH, RAIN
Ichigo: I will protect you from things like that!
Masaki: You're very brave, Ichigo! But… Roadside duty isn't for someone who couldn't beat Tatsuki once!
Ichigo: Come on… I won the other day!
Masaki: There… You're clean! Let's go!
Ichigo: I loved my mother. I never saw her cry or get mad once. A parents' mood has a huge effect on their kids. She already knew that. If I was with her, I would be okay. Not just me. Yuzu, Karin and Dad all loved her as much as I did. She was just like the universe. My dad once told me that…
(Flashback to what Isshin said to Ichigo.)
Isshin: Ichigo… You always wanted to protect everyone including us… Because that's what your name means… One who protects.
Ichigo: That was when I remember to always protect my mother who always protected me.
(Ichigo then sees a girl who looks like she is about to jump.)
Ichigo: It was raining that day. Also the day before. So the river was way up. The girl was standing there with no umbrella like she was deciding whether to jump or not. And back then, I couldn't tell from the dead or the living.
(Ichigo then goes and tries to stop the girl from jumping.)
Ichigo: Wait here, Mom.
Masaki: What? Ichigo?!
Ichigo: First, I wanted to protect my mom. Then my sisters were born and I wanted to protect them as well. That's why I started taking karate. As I got stronger, I wanted to protect more people.
Masaki: No! Ichigo!
(Ichigo then awakens to see his mother dead as if she was protecting him.)
Ichigo: M-Mom… I didn't see what cut her. I thought it was a piece of glass or some bent metal from a passing bus. But she died trying to protect me. And the girl disappeared shortly after. I loved my mother. Not just me. Yuzu, Karin and Dad loved her as much as I did. She was just like the universe. But I destroyed our universe. Me!
(Cut to Karin and Yuzu as she comforts her.)
Karin: Don't cry, Yuzu. You're getting too big to cry every time you come here. We're almost 11! We're practically grownups!
(Karin then hears the whistle that Isshin brought for the trip.)
Karin: Let's go, Yuzu! Dad's blowing his stupid whistle! We gotta go!
Yuzu: Okay.
(Karin then sees a girl standing on a cliff.)
Karin: What's she doing over there?
Yuzu: Where?
Karin: Yuzu can't see her… So she might be a ghost. Wait here. Hey! Why are you staring over the cliff like that? If something's bothering you, there's a priest who's down that hill.
Girl: You can see me?
Karin: Yes, I'm one of them. But don't tell anyone, it would be embarrassing.
Girl: You can hear me as well. How nice…
(The girl then turns to Karin menacingly and reveals a monster's shadow.)
Girl?: How tasty you look!
Karin: Oh crap…
Yuzu: Karin! What's wrong? We gotta go!
Karin: Stay back! What are you and what's that thing behind you?!
Girl?: So you can see it,too? You're really talented!
(Cut to Isshin as he looks for a better whistle.)
Isshin: Which is a better whistle? Dog, snake, lips! No! Oh, here's a chicken whistle! Let's see how this works…
(Isshin blows it super hard as Ichigo comes and covers his ears.)
Ichigo: Will you stop blowing that thing so hard?! You didn't have to use that damn whistle to call us!
Isshin: Oh, there you are, Ichigo.
Ichigo: Yuzu and Karin aren't here yet?
Isshin: Of course not! Why would I be blowing this chicken whistle? Go look for them!
Ichigo: That's weak. Go look for them yourself.
Isshin: Who are you calling weak?! Don't you love your sweet little sisters?!
Ichigo: Give me a break! They're probably off peeing! They'll show up!
Isshin: Let's split up and look for them! You go that way! I'll look here!
Ichigo: Ooookay…
(Ichigo then feels the sensation of a Hollow.)
Ichigo: This sensation… It's a Hollow!
Isshin: Hey… You've decided to go look for them now! That's my boy… Hey! Don't just storm off! Are you going to look for them or not?! What the hell has gotten into him?
(Cut to Rukia as she also feels the sensation of a Hollow.)
Kon: What is it, Rukia?!
Rukia: It's a Hollow?! But there hasn't been an order yet.
(She then hears a bleep from her communicator.)
Rukia: No! It came late!
(Cut to Ichigo as he's going to see what Hollow it is and meets Rukia on the way.)
Ichigo: Hey, Rukia! If you're here, then we might be going to the same location.
Rukia: Of course! I'm an expert.
Ichigo: Is there something you want to tell me?
Rukia: If I did, would you answer me? It's your problem. It's a very deep problem. I don't know how to ask about it… I don't have to practice stepping into the darkness of your heart without getting dirty. So I'll wait. When you feel like talking… I'll listen.
Ichigo: Thanks, Rukia…
(Cut back to Karin as she is attacked by the invisible Hollow.)
Yuzu: Karin!
Karin: Yuzu… Stay back!
(The Hollow then stomps on Karin.)
Yuzu: Karin! Something's on top of you. What is it? No! Get off of my sister!
(The Hollow then uses one of its tentacles to choke Yuzu.)
Karin: Yuzu!
Girl?: This girl is so noisy! You're too weak to stop me! It's the black-haired girl I want to eat. Even if you don't make a good meal, I'll eat you first!
(The Hollow prepares to eat Yuzu, only for Ichigo to slice off one of its tentacles and it tries to attack him to have its arm cut off.)
Girl?: A Shinigami!
Ichigo: What the fuck is this? You! It was you by the river that day six years ago. What are you doing here? Why are you with a Hollow?!
Girl?: Six years? It was such a long time ago that I can't even remember… But you've seen me before.
Ichigo: Yes I have! Who are you?! Are you a sidekick of that Hollow?! Are you being controlled?! Answer me!
Girl?: I am neither. Boy.
Ichigo: What the! What are you?
Girl?: It's incredible how you saw me and lived… You're very lucky.
(The face of the girl begins to peel off, revealing itself to be the Hollow, Grand Fisher.)
Ichigo: What is that?!
