Sunday meant Royal Rumble day. It was possibly Jay's favourite day of the year, as he had always greatly enjoyed the Royal Rumble matches ever since he was a kid. This year, Hank Voight hadn't told anyone ahead of time who he had decided would win either the men's or women's matches, so the entire roster would have to find out when they got to the arena. Jay had hopes that he would be given the victory in the men's match, and therefore a guaranteed main event spot at Wrestlemania. It had been a while since he had been the WWE Champion, so he figured he was due.
Sunday also meant seeing Erin again, at last. The days they had spent apart had dragged big time, even though they had chatted over text. With Erin working day shifts at WWE HQ and Jay working nights at the non-televised events, their schedules clashed badly when she wasn't on the road. He had missed her badly, and he never felt that way about people. It showed him how deep his feelings were for her already.
Even a slightly delayed flight hadn't annoyed him too much. It had still allowed him to get the arena before the call time for talent, which saved him picking up a fine. The only negative that had come from it was having to text Erin and tell her not to wait for him at the airport. Instead, he would see her when he got to the arena.
As he walked into the building, finding Erin was his top priority, other than dropping his case off in the men's locker room. Once he had that done, he started his search.
It didn't end up taking long. After catering, his second place to look was out in the arena. People would often got out there, to sit somewhere out in the empty seats and talk privately, or to train in the ring. Jay found Erin standing by herself on the left hand side of the stage, looking down towards the ring with what looked like a troubled expression on her face. She was nervous about her first match, he realised. That was perfectly understandable.
Erin noticed him approaching just before he got to her and her face lit up with one of those impossibly beautiful smiles. "Hey! How are you?" she asked.
"Doing good. You?" he replied with a smile of his own. He wanted to give her a hug and a kiss, and could tell that she was thinking the same thing. But with backstage crew members and wrestlers milling around, that was off the table.
"Missed you," she said quietly.
"I missed you too. A lot. Today seemed to take forever to come around. I want to kiss you, but not here, right?"
"Not here," she confirmed. "Sucks, doesn't it?"
"Big time," Jay grumbled. But Hank going on the war path would suck a lot more. Mindful of what he had read about asking questions to help build relationships, and that it would be a good thing if he could help Erin with a problem, he took the initiative. "You looked worried about something. Are okay? Nervous about the rumble match?"
"Yeah," Erin admitted, moving slightly closer to him. He wasn't good at reading other people's emotions, but it seemed to him that she was taking comfort in him being there. To hell with it, he decided, and put an arm around her shoulders.
"Dad wants me to take a Chingona Bomb tonight," she announced.
The Chingona Bomb was Raquel Gonzalez's finishing move. She would lift her opponent so that they ended up sitting on her right shoulder, facing the opposite way. She would then lift them up even further, using only her right arm, before slamming them down to the mat on their backs with a tremendous impact, from about eight feet up. It was a showcase of Raquel's strength, and the most impactful move performed by a woman in WWE. And Erin was going to have to take one. Jay wasn't a fan of the idea, but it wasn't his company to run. The fans would definitely love to see Erin get wrecked, so there was that.
"Oh," he said flatly, not wanting to say anything that made her feel worse.
"It's going to hurt, right?"
Jay figured he should find a balance between being honest and not worrying her too much. "It'll hurt, yeah. But it won't be bad. Raquel's good in the ring, she's not going to injure you. You'll be fine."
"Really?" she asked, looking up at him hopefully.
"Sure," he smiled. "How are you going to end up taking a Chingona Bomb anyway? Your character and Raquel's are pretty much allies, at the other Lethal Latinas."
"They're turning her babyface and removing her from the group. The process it starting tonight. She's going to end up facing Bayley at Wrestlemania after she wins tonight."
"Raquel's winning the rumble match?" Jay asked, hugely excited for his friend.
"Yeah. Dad told us just now in his office, after he told me about taking the Chingona Bomb."
"That's great. I'm happy for her. Did he say who's going to win the men's match?"
"No, didn't mention it. But he did say he wants to see you, so you'd better go over there soon."
"I'm happy here right now," Jay said with a smile that also made her smile.
"I really did miss you, Jay. It sucked that we had to be apart for a few days after the other night, and our talk that morning. I've been thinking about you all the time, and the more I think about it, the more I appreciate the courage it took to tell me about... what you told me."
He understood why she didn't to specifically mention his child abuse, obviously fearing that it might upset him. Even so, it did bring back awful memories, but he wasn't going to hold that against her. In a way, it felt good to have someone to talk to about it one day, when he felt able.
'So tell her that!' a voice in his head yelled at him. But he couldn't. He just couldn't. All he could do was squeeze her shoulders a bit tighter.
"Oh, Jay," Erin said, cuddling up to him. He wondered if she knew what he was feeling. One thing he did know was that in that moment, neither of them gave a damn who saw them together.
"Will you come to my suite tonight for dinner?" she asked after a few moments, gently moving away from the embrace.
"Yes," he replied without hesitation. This time, he wasn't obsessing about sex, although he definitely hoped for it. In fact thinking about sex made him notice at last that she wasn't wearing any leather at the moment. But what actually mattered to him now was simply getting to spend time with her. That was what he looked forward to.
"I hoped you would. Jay, you'd better go see my dad. Whatever he wanted you for, it sounded like he meant sooner rather than later."
"Alright," Jay said. Keeping Hank waiting was never a good idea. "I'll catch up with you before the show, okay?"
"Okay. I can't kiss you goodbye. Not here."
Jay smiled, wishing she could. "I know. But tonight..."
"Tonight," she promised. "And they won't be goodbye kisses."
With that delightful promise in mind, Jay walked back through the curtain and made his way through the hallways to where Hank's office was set up. As usual there was a line of people outside, waiting to see the boss for one reason or another. Stella Kidd was currently at the front of the line.
"Hi, Jay. Hank said to tell you to go straight in if you showed up," she said.
He nodded an acknowledgement, not finding it out of the ordinary that he would receive special privilege. He knocked the door loudly.
"Yeah!" came Hank's distinctive voice from within.
Jay opened the door and walked in, discovering that Hank had been speaking to two guys who wrestled in the tag team division. He imagined they were trying to talk their way into getting the ridiculous characters that they had been given changed.
"Wait outside," Hank told them abruptly. His manner put Jay on the back foot. Although he was no good at relating to people, one emotion that he was definitely good at picking up on was anger. That was deeply ingrained in him, and would remain so for the rest of his life. Hank was giving off those vibes.
The two guys got up and quickly left the office, pulling the door closed quietly behind them. Meanwhile, Hank stood up behind his desk, glaring at Jay. He said nothing until the door closed, then he got right to the point.
"Are you fucking my daughter?"
A/N: Erin is going to take a particularly powerful move from Raquel during the rumble match. The fans are sure to enjoy it, but will she be okay?
But before that, what is going to happen between Jay and Hank?
