It was Kim's doctors appointment today. She was having her IUD removed so that when she and Adam were ready for kids they could start trying right away. Kim was nervous but she knew it was the right thing to do. Adam was only nervous because he didn't know what to expect. He had never been to this type of appointment before. He hoped she wasn't harmed in the process. Kim told him that it could be painful hence why she took the day off from work. So he hoped that she was going to be okay. It was worth it though. He hoped in the next year they would be pregnant. Expecting a child that was the perfect mix of both of them. It was the life he dreamed of since he was 13. The fact they had kids already albeit from other people was a bonus in the life they were creating together. He didn't care if it was a boy or a girl he just wanted a child with Kim.
"Baby you ready to go!" Kim yelled up the stairs. "Yeah just grabbing my badge and sidearm. Be right there." Adam yelled back. He grabbed his things then headed down the stairs to meet his family. "Alright let's get the kids in the car and head out!" Kim stated as they moved towards the car. As they drove the kids filled the car with chatter about their upcoming day. It was fun filled conversation and took the nervousness out of the air. After dropping Allie at school they headed to drop Riley off at Bobs house. Once Riley was safely at Bobs they headed to the doctors. "Are you nervous?" Adam asked. "Not really. Not the first time I've been there. Not looking forward to the pain But otherwise it's fine. What about you? You seem nervous." Kim replied watching him. "I've never been to one of these appointments before. So yeah I'm nervous." Adam replied. Kim squeezed his hand as they continued the ride.
They arrived at the doctors office heading inside Adams hand started to sweat. "It's gonna be fine! Don't worry!" Kim stated as they waited. "This is just strange. It's new for me." Adam shrugged but didn't have time to really think about it as her name was called. They were taken into the examination room where vitals were taken by the nurse. "Okay I just need you to change into the gown and the doctor will be in shortly." The nurse left the room leaving Kim to get undressed and put on the lovely paper gown. Adam was kind on edge looking around the room at all the tools. "So these get inserted to check things out?" He asked pointing towards the set of tools laid out. "Yup! You should see what gets inserted when you're pregnant. It seriously looks like a vibrator." Kim laughed at his horror. They heard the knock on the door before the doctor entered.
"Good Morning Ms Burgess. Are you ready you have your implant removed?" Dr Eli asked. "Absolutely. This is my boyfriend Adam. We were hoping to get on the pill or patch instead of doing another implant. We don't want to wait 5 years to try for another one." Kim replied nervously. She was fine till now. But she could do this. "Sounds like a good plan. Thought out and planned. We can make that happen for sure. For now let's remove the implant and then we can discuss further options. Im just gonna need for you to get on the table and your feet in the stirrups." Eli stated as Kim moved Adam watched shocked at how her legs were spread and her feet were supported. Kim reached out to grab his hand for support. He did take her hand but looked like he was going to either pass out or throw up.
Kim found it funny how her tough guy boyfriend was falling apart during this procedure. It wasn't long till the doctor was finished and Kim sitting up again. She took the pain pills that were offered as she found some cramping was starting already. It was uncomfortable but nothing compared to giving birth so she could handle it. "I'm going to step out so you can get dressed. I will be back so we can talk more." The doctor exited the room leaving Kim to dress and Adam to breath. "You okay tough guy?" Kim asked almost laughing. "Yeah that was just kind of scary! Watching him put something inside you made me very uncomfortable. I didn't expect to feel like this. How are you feeling?" Adam asked knowing that this happened to her. "I'm good. Cramps have started but that's normal. And it's not to bad just a little uncomfortable. I promise I'm good." Kim smiled as she got dressed hoping he would calm down some. "Good I'm glad!" Adam stood up to kiss her softly before taking his seat again.
When the doctor returned they went over all the options available. The pill, shots, the patch. It was a lot to consider but knowing her job the patch seemed like the best option. The doctor sent the script over to her pharmacy and the couple was on their way with a reminder of no sex for 48 hours. Kim laughed at Adam who looked like someone kicked his puppy. It was adorable but funny at the same time. "Since we still have a bit before I have to work. Do you want to grab some breakfast? I noticed you didn't eat much this morning." Adam offered knowing she had to be hungry. "Yeah that's a great idea. I am kind of hungry now that the appointment is over." Kim admitted looking at Adam who looked smug with his ability to read her. They headed to a near by diner that they both liked. A place they brought the kids often.
They were led to a booth near the back of the dining area. It was quiet and they could talk while enjoyed their meal. "So what is the plan for Christmas? I kind of don't want to drive the kids around all day. I would like them to open their gifts and enjoy them." Adam hated that when he was a kid. And he knew Kim hated that too. "Well we could invite everyone over for Christmas Eve? Then Christmas Day it can just be us. But I'm also not sure what Eric's plans are right now. Hopefully he's good with it. Last year he took Allie to his parents for a few days after Christmas. And we know that's not happening this year." Kim shuddered thinking of the shit storm that was Allies birthday party. "Well I like that plan. And I think the family would be fine with it. Even if they can't all come on the Eve they can come Christmas Day but they have to come to us. I never want our kids feeling like we did as kids." Adam stated strongly.
"Agreed! Whole heartedly. I want the same thing. Trust me I do. I think a simple Italian dinner would work. We don't have to have appetizers but dessert is a must. I'm thinking cookies, Italian Ricotta Cake, Tuscan Apple Cake. Baking season is crazy in this house by the way. You are in for a treat!" Kim laughed as Adam looked confused. "13 types of cookies, breads and cakes. We gift and we eat! I do 8 types of cookies in one day. And on that day don't come in the kitchen. It's not pretty!" Kim laughed thinking of a day from the past when she dumped a whole bowl of dough on Eric's head. "Well I'm happy to taste test anything you make. I'm here to serve!" Adam joked but was totally serious about taste testing. "Well I'm basically a pro at this point but you can taste test if you like. But you have to carry the flour and sugar in for me. 50 pounds of flour and 25 pounds of sugar!" Kim laughed as Adams eyes bugged out. "What I bake a lot!" Kim kept laughing.
"Well sounds like a good time to me so I'm down for it all. We should get the tree this weekend. More time to enjoy it." Adam suggested. He didn't do a tree at his place with Riley before so he thought it was important. "Agree.we should also allow Riley to pick out a few ornaments for the tree that he likes. I want him included on the tree too." Kim was adamant that Riley he treated like her own and vice versa. "I think he would like that. We all need to make it our own tree this year. It will be crazy but great!" Adam knew Kim liked things a certain way but he also knew she would do anything for the kids. "Of course! And hopefully you will do the outdoor lights this year?" Kim asked hopefully. "Of course. You didn't even need to ask. It's my job going forward." Adam winked knowing it's exactly what she wanted to hear.
When they finished eating Adam drove Kim home before he headed to work. "Alright well I have to head into work. But call if you need anything. I love you so much Darling!" Adam leaned over to kiss before she started to get out if the car. "I love you too so much! Be safe today! See you tonight!" Kim smiled as she got out. She closed the door behind her and headed into the house. She had a whole day to do whatever she liked. It was unusual for her but she kind of like it. She decided to be somewhat productive and send a mass email to the family about Christmas Eve. After she sent the email she started to do online shopping for presents for the kids. It was easy when the kids weren't around. And since she was supposed to rest this was the perfect thing to do.
"Hey baby! I just placed an order at Target for gifts for the kids can you pick it up after work?" Kim asked in a text. She would pick the kids up but didn't want them to get curious about the bags holding their gifts. "Yeah no problem. The kids snoop to much so it's better I do that!" Adam grinned knowing she was being busy but resting too. He loved her ability to multitask. Kim decided to take a bath to help calm some of the cramps she was having. It was relaxing and she didn't have this time often enough. Adam was busy working a drug case. It was a normal case for them. He was just happy being busy and not having the time to worry about Kim. He knew she said she was fine but he still worried about her. So busy was the best thing for him.
He did have some time to think about what to get Kim for Christmas though. It would take some planning but he was certain he could pull it off. His idea was to take Kim away to the beach, their beach, in February. Specifically over Valentine's Day. He would then purpose to her on Valentine's Day at the spot of their first date. He would also plan to have the kids stay at home with family so they could have alone time. So the long and short of it was he needed to find a ring and get time off for both of them. So he got to work planning right away. His secondary plan of getting the ring would involve Erin helping him to find the perfect one.
"Hey boss! Could I get two time off request forms? I'm planning to take Kim away in February for a few days." Adam explained as he sat in front of his boss. "Yeah I assume it's a surprise?" Voight asked curious why Adam was asking for Kim. "Yeah I'm thinking for her Christmas present. But the bigger plan is to... um yeah I ah want to propose while we are in NC. Right where we had our first date years ago. The place we took our kids on the first day together." Adam felt relieved getting his idea out to someone who knew Kim so well. Voight looked shocked. Like the air had left his body. "Um wow. Okay. Well I'm not opposed to the idea. I'm just surprised it's so soon. But you two found your way back to each other after 13 years so I think it's the right move. I've seen Kim come back to life since she found you again. It's pretty amazing to see." Voight handed over the forms for Adam to fill out. As soon as they were done Voight took the papers to sign off on Adams and would get Kim's over to Platt and let her know about the secret.
When Kim finished her bath she worked on getting dinner prepped so it was easier for later. She also cleaned the kitchen to get it prepped for the cookie baking that needed to take place soon. She made sure to have a list of all the supplies she needed to pick up at the store. It was getting closer to pick up time so Kim headed to the store to buy all the supplies she needed plus some groceries they needed. After the store she headed to pick up Allie from school. As she waited in the pick up line Kim looked for the perfect Christmas gift for Adam. She had no real idea of what to get him but she wanted something nice and meaningful. She had a lightbulbs moment. She headed to Etsy to look for the perfect sign. She wanted something with the stars from the day if their first date 13 years ago. The day that changed their lives forever. In a positive way. They didn't need to dwell on the negative anymore. They felt like they had moved past that terrible time in Kim's life.
Kim was brought out of her thoughts by her daughter yelling for her as she ran into Kim's arms. "Hi my sweetheart! Did you have a good day?" Kim asked as she held her. "Yes it was so much fun! I drew a picture for you and Daddy Adam. What to see?" Allie asked. "Of course!" Kim was excited to see her latest creation. "See it's me, you, daddy Adam and Riley. And that's a puppy!" Allie giggled loudly. "It's beautiful sweetie! But I'm not sure about the puppy. We can talk more about that later. We have to go pick Riley up from pops house." Kim suggested to try to move from the puppy conversation. "Yay let's go!" Allie was ready to head out. Kim buckled Allie in to her car seat before getting in the car to head out.
They drove to Bobs house with Allie singing along to the radio. She was always a happy, active child and loved to sing and dance. They had successfully worked past Allie wanting to do dance classes at this point but knew it would probably come back again at some point. Kim wanted to give her daughter everything but that was something she didn't know how to give it. As they arrived outside Bobs house Kim was hoping the puppy conversation was dead for now and that Allie wouldn't spread that thought process. She got Allie out of the car as they headed to the door. Allie rang the doorbell and waited for bob to open the door. They could hear giggles through the door and sound of feet headed towards the door. As the door opened Riley was giggling in Bobs arms. "Hello ladies! Come on in!" Bob stated as he opened the screen door for them.
"Thanks Bob! Looks like you two had a good day!" Kim stated as Bob let Riley down to play with Allie. "Yeah it was fun. We had a good day. What about you?" Bob asked watching the kids. "It was good. I got some shopping done for the 25th. Adam is getting it after work so the kids don't snoop. I did some grocery shopping, cleaned the kitchen. Nothing too special but good." As they spoke they heard Riley squealing. Kim ran into the room followed by Bob. "What's wrong?" Kim asked scared. "Puppy! We get puppy!" Riley screamed in happiness. "Ugh Allie I didn't agree to a puppy! I said we would talk about it more! It's not just me who has to be okay with it. Daddy Adam has to approve of it too." Kim hated crushing their happiness. "Yeah a puppy is a big responsibility. Mommy and daddy need to think about whether they can take on more stuff." Bob chimed I'm seeing how upset Kim was getting over the puppy issue. "Thanks Bob!" Kim was thankful for the back up.
"Alright let's head home kids! We have stuff to get in the fridge and kitchen so we need to head home." Kim grabbed the bags of Riley's stuff before they headed out. The kids hugged Bob goodbye before getting into the car. Kim buckled them in and they headed out. As they made their way home the kids both danced in their seats. Kim was smiling wide watching them. They entered the home dragging the grocery bags as they entered the home. The kids ran into the living room to play as Kim put the food away. Kim took a moment to call Adam and give him the heads up about the puppy issue. "Hey Darling! You okay?" Adam asked as he answered. "Yeah just wanted to pass along a heads up that a certain little miss wants a puppy! And then proceeded to tell a certain little man that we are getting a puppy! I think we have two very crushed little kids right who want a puppy!" Kim explained in her most sarcastic voice."
"Oh lovely! Where did this puppy idea come from?" Adam sighed heavily. "Lord knows! She drew a picture today of the 4 of us with a puppy and she hasn't let up much about it. Just be prepared." Kim hated saying no but this was a big no. They had no time for a dog let alone a puppy. "Well thanks for the heads up. I appreciate it. But I'm in agreement, no puppy!" Adam was stern with his words. They got off the phone soon after. Adam shaking his head watching the team chuckle hearing his side of the conversation. He got back to work trying to finish up so he could get out at a decent time. He needed to stop on the way home for Kim and then to get the kids gifts. He knew she wouldn't remember to stop at the pharmacy today so he would take care of that for her. He also planned to get a few extra items to make sure they were covered while waiting for her new birth control to kick in.
"Alright guys I'm finished. I'm headed home to two upset kids. Wish me luck!" Adam joked as he headed out. A round of good lucks rang out as he headed down the stairs. He definitely wasn't looking forward to that at all. He loved the kids with everything he had but he didn't want a dog. Maybe one day but not now. Life was too crazy at the moment. He also knew Kim was more of a cat person than a dog person. She had been attacked by a dog when she was a teenager and while she didn't hate them she didn't really want one. Definitely didn't like being jumped on and the barking was annoying to her. So the kids would just have to get over it. Maybe he would take them to visit the K9 dogs. Though that could make the want worse for them. He would need to think about that.
As he headed into the pharmacy he headed right to the family planning aisle to get several boxes on condoms before he got her new script. After he left he headed to target to get the toys for the kids. He was thankful that Kim selected car drop off so he didn't have to leave the warmth of his car. As he waited he texted Kim to let her know what he was up to. Kim started to cook right away so dinner would be ready when he arrived. It wasn't anything super fancy but it was hearty and filling for her family. Kim loved to cook and bake. It reminded her of family times with her whole family. Her grandmother always baked and Kim followed in her footsteps. She even made several of her grandmothers recipes. It made her feel close to her grandmother who was unfortunately no longer with them.
As she tidied up the kitchen she heard Adam coming into the home. The kids running to greet him was one of his favorite things. "Hey guys! I missed you today! Can I get a hug?" Adam asked only carrying the pharmacy bag. He bent down to pick both kids up in his arms. Getting big hugs from both his kids. He brought them to the kitchen with him to see Kim. "Hey Darling! Got your script and some back up." Adam handed her the bag. "Thanks baby! I need to start that tonight. And thank you for the back up. It's definitely a good idea." Kim lifted up on to her tip toes to kiss him. Both kids gagged. The couple laughed hard. Adam put them down so they could play a bit longer. "How are you feeling really?" Adam asked holding her body close to his. "I'm good the cramping went away hours ago. Maybe a little tired but I'm good. Can you help me get the patch on?" Kim asked as she lifted her shirt to get her arm out. Adam got the patch and put it on her arm for her before she put her arm back in.
Dinner finished shortly after. The family ate dinner together and somehow they avoided the topic of a puppy for the time being. Adam heard all about the kids days which helped him feel connected to the kids when he's at work. After dinner they decided to do a family movie night since Kim seemed to be overly tired. As the movie dragged on the kids slowly fell asleep curled up between their parents. Adam took both kids to bed only to return to find Kim asleep on the couch. "Okay darling. Let's get you into bed now." Adam scooped her up and carried her to their bed. He helped undress her and got her under the covers. He kissed her forehead before heading to take a quick shower. After his shower he climbed into bed pulling her against his body. He took several deep breaths inhaling her scent before he fall asleep with the love of his life.
