Spontaneity was one of the most alien concepts for Jay. He was a creature of routine, craving predictability and stability in his life. But today he had decided to be spontaneous. Even better, the idea was entirely his own. For that reason alone, he felt proud of himself.

A rare couple of days ahead without any WWE shows to work had made this little trip possible, heading from Pittsburgh to New York before flying home to Chicago. He had just parked his hire car in the lot at WWE HQ. Erin would be inside, working her day job in accounts. Soon, she would be moving way up the ladder to head up the creative department. That would give her a lot more power, and pay her a lot more money. Both of those things were a turn on for him.

By design, Erin had no idea that he was coming. He had actually been able to come up with a plan to surprise her, and he looked forward to her reaction when she saw him. He looked forward to seeing her too. It was now at the point where he missed her greatly whenever they were not together.

It was a few minutes after noon when he walked into the building's lobby. It wasn't his first visit to HQ of course. He'd had meetings with Hank here in the past, and all contract renewals were handled here. It had been some time though, but to his eye the only thing that had changed in the lobby was the receptionist. One pretty blonde replaced by another. On the wall behind he the reception desk there was a large illuminated WWE logo. Off to the right stood a security guard in a suit, trying and failing not to look overtly like security.

The receptionist recognised Jay of course. He was one of WWE's biggest stars, how could she not?

"Mr Halstead. Good afternoon. Uh, I don't have you down to come in today," she said, looking at her computer screen with an air of panic, assuming someone had made an error.

"I'm not down to come in today, don't worry. I was, uh, passing, and I thought I'd come in and see Erin Voight."

"Oh," the receptionist said, smiling now that she knew there was not going to be an issue. "Ms Voight works on the third floor, in accounts. I can issue you with a visitor pass, and I'll call to let her know you're here."

"Yes to the visitor pass, no to the call ahead. It would ruin the surprise."

The woman looked troubled, unused to rules and regulations not being followed. "Sir, I'm supposed to call anyone who has a visitor." A phone started ringing on her desk.

"She'll be glad you didn't," he assured her. "If anyone does say anything though, you tell them to call me."

Jay was surprised by how confident he had been during the exchange. Maybe Erin was having an effect on him?

Convinced, the receptionist issued him with a visitor pass, ignoring the phone for now. "Take the elevator to the third floor. The accounts department will be on your right."

"Thank you," Jay said, leaving her to answer the persistent caller. He went over to the elevator, where he had to scan the visitor pass before the call button would respond to his touch. When it did, the elevator was actually at the lobby. The doors slid open right away.

Jay took the elevator up to the third floor. When the doors opened, there were two men in suits there waiting to use it. They were understandably surprised to come face to face with Jay Halstead.

"Oh. Hi," one of them said as the other nodded shyly.

"Hey," Jay said. Moving past them, he headed to the right, directed to the accounts department by a sign on the wall opposite the elevator as well as by the receptionist's instructions. His stomach suddenly knotted up, as that ever annoying part of his psyche that was always negative told him that Erin was about to blow up at him for showing up at her place of work unannounced. For a second he wanted to turn around and leave. But no, he had come this far. He would go through with it.

The accounts department consisted of several individual offices and a bullpen arrangement with men and women at work at the various desks. There was some chatter, and the sound of a phone ringing. He could see Erin at one of the desks at the far end of the room, attention entirely on her computer screen. Just setting eyes on her made him smile. To him she looked stunning in a light grey suit and a black blouse. He wasn't sure why he liked her in a suit, but he did. A lot.

Erin didn't notice him walking across the bullpen until he was almost at her desk. She looked up nonchalantly, then almost did a double take when her mind registered who it was. Her face lit up in a smile, and that alone made the effort worth it for him. She definitely wasn't angry with him.

"Jay! What are you doing here?" she cried. As she stood, she ran her left hand through her hair and Jay saw an obviously very expensive silver watch with a black face on her wrist. He had never seen it before. It was obviously only office wear. Or maybe it was a new purchase? Lately, it helped him in these situations to imagine what Raquel might tell him to do if she were there and able to offer advice that Erin couldn't hear. In this case, she would tell him to comment on the watch.

"I thought I'd surprise you. Nice watch you've got there. Is it new?"

"It is," she said, holding her wrist where he could get a better look at the watch. It was a Rolex, of all things. Had to be worth more than most people's cars, he figured. Fittingly, it gleamed under the bright lights of the bullpen. "Dad gave it to me last night. It's to celebrate... Well, you know..."

The promotion that couldn't yet be mentioned, Jay realised. "It's so nice," he said. "You didn't mention it last night or send me a picture of it."

Erin shrugged. "I don't like to show things off. Yes, it is nice, but it's nothing like as nice as you showing up here. I can take my lunch break if you want to go up the street and get a sandwich or something?"

"I'd like that," Jay said with a smile. His understanding of Erin had just been further confirmed. She possessed some of the finer things in life – could afford them, enjoyed them, felt comfortable with them. But what really mattered to her was when her man put effort into spending time with her and making her happy. The thought truly counted, and he had to make sure not to ever forget that.

Erin's attention went to her computer for a moment. "Let me just set myself to out of office. There. We've got an hour."

You're the boss, you've got as long as you want, Jay thought. But then he corrected himself. She wasn't the boss. She was an employee in accounts, and wouldn't allow herself to be treated any differently to the rest of the people in the bullpen. He respected that greatly.

After logging out of her computer, Erin opened the bottom drawer of the three that her desk had. She took out a black scarf and quickly wound it around her neck, then took out a pair of black leather gloves and worked her hands into them. Jay just smiled, not surprised in the least.

"Couldn't go without them," she said with a cute little grin.

"Of course not."

Their conversation didn't really begin until they walked out of the building's main entrance, where they had privacy.

"Jay, you do the absolute sweetest, most adorable things, you know that? I cannot believe you flew up here just to come see me," Erin gushed. At the same time, she took his hand in hers. Jay liked the cool, soft, smooth leather against his skin, which told him her kink really was affecting him. But now wasn't the time for that.

"I'm glad it made you happy. That's why I did it. It makes me feel... I don't know how to explain how it makes me feel when I make you happy. But I love doing it."

"It is hard to explain. But I know the feeling you mean. There's a sandwich shop at the end of the block. Does that work for you?"

"Sure."

"Nice promotion gift from your dad. When does it stop being a secret?"

"After Wrestlemania. Until then I'm working on my ideas for the women and running them through my dad. There's one I want to talk to you about actually." Then she chastised herself. "Christ, listen to me. You come all the way here to see me and I start talking about work. I'm sorry I do that so much."

"Don't apologise. I like talking to you about work, and I'm happy to be a sounding board for you if that's what you need. I'd like to hear your ideas."

"Okay. You're the best," she said, smiling broadly. "Before we do that, I was texting with Z last night about the double date. They're up for it, and they've invited us to stay at their place in Orlando. Haven't arranged a date for it yet as I wanted to speak to you first. So, what do you think?"

"Let's do it," Jay said, although his anxiety flared up again. He really wasn't at ease with Zelina 'five feet of attitude' Vega. Not yet anyway. He would only get there by working on it though, he knew that. So maybe the double date would turn out to be a good thing? That was what he had to tell himself.

"Okay, great. I'll check everyone's schedules and fix up a date when it works for everyone. I'll let you know."

"I'll look forward to it," Jay said as they walked into the sandwich shop. It was true, mostly. He saw that the shop was quite small, with only two tables for customers who wanted to eat in. One of them was occupied. They had timed it well at least, as no one was currently being served. "What's good here?" he asked Erin.

"I'm going for pulled pork and cheese. It's one of my favourites. Terrible for you, but worth it."

"What the hell, I'll join you," he decided.

Erin ordered for them, making small talk with the old guy who was serving. She insisted on paying, then they sat down at the table. Erin took her gloves off and put them on the table. Wouldn't want to get cheese on them, Jay thought, suppressing a smile.

"Mmm, that really is good," he said after his first bite of the foot long sandwich crammed full of pork and dripping with melted cheese. His praise was an understatement.

"Right? Can't eat one of these often, but they're so nice when I do."

"So, what idea did you want to talk about?"

"Forget work for now. We'll talk about it another time," she said, waving it off with a hand gesture. "While we're talking about making plans though, I want to talk to dad about inviting you over to our place soon. Are you okay with that?"

No, but I have to say yes, Jay thought. "Sure," was what came out of his mouth.

"I'm convinced he'll calm down about us being together once he actually sees us together. I know it won't be easy for you, Jay. In fact it probably worries you a lot, right?"

"It's not exactly something I'm looking forward to. But I'll do it if it fixes things between me and Hank."

Erin had bought a Coke for each of them. She drank some of hers then smiled at him. "Thank you. It means a lot to me. On the off chance that he decides to be a dick to you, I'm going to give him a proper telling off, believe me."

"In a way, I'd love to see that," Jay said, glad to be able to put some humour into the conversation.

"Don't," she replied with a giggle. "Anyway, seems I've got some plans to make. I'll get on that and let you know when it's sorted."

They chatted away over their meal, and her lunch break flew by. To Jay is seemed like they had only been there for ten minutes when she looked at her fancy new watch and announced, "I had better get back to work. Are you hanging around? We could do dinner and a hotel tonight?"

"I've got a flight home in a couple of hours. This was more of a stop off on the way, just without actually being on the way."

Erin giggled again. His silly humour always worked on her. "Okay, well it was a very, very sweet thing to do. Give me a kiss."

Jay leaned across the table and kissed her on the lips. Out of nowhere, he almost told her he loved her. But it was to soon for that, wasn't it? In truth, he had no idea. He decided to wait, in case he stepped over a line. Nonetheless, he knew by now that he did love her. He could only hope the feeling was mutual.

A/N: Jay nearly told Erin he loves her. Do you think it's too soon for that, or should he come out and say it?

We have a double date coming, and Jay going for dinner with Erin and Hank. Which would you like to see first?
