Two days later, Jay had a night off. It was a rare luxury, offering him a chance to spend some time alone at his apartment. Alone time was something he had always enjoyed. In fact it was something he needed. Lying on his couch, with the TV on but not being listened to, he was thinking about whether it would be a good idea to move into Eagle's Nest with Erin.

On one hand, he wanted to spend as much time as possible with her. Their schedules had become quite different recently, meaning he got to see her less than he wanted to. He knew that was a problem for her too. Living together wouldn't solve that problem as he would still need to be on the road for work, but it would help to mitigate it.

There was also the fact that Eagle's Nest would be an unbelievable place to live. He had never seen anywhere like it in person before the day he had viewed it with her, let alone lived somewhere like it. Now it could be his home, in an idyllic setting and with luxury that seemed out of this world.

But the question was would it actually be his home? Or would it be Erin's home that he was living in? Raquel had said Zelina's house had felt that was to her at first, and Zelina's house was nothing like Eagle's Nest.

In addition, by moving in with Erin, Jay would deny himself nights like tonight, where he had his own space and his own company. He wasn't sure he was ready to completely give that up.

"Maybe there's a middle ground?" he muttered to himself. He considered the possibility of moving some of his things into Erin's place, while leaving some at the apartment. It was probably the best solution for him, but he worried that she might see it as a lack of commitment if he suggested it. Damn, relationships were tough, even with someone who low maintenance.

There was a loud knock on his apartment door.

"Who the fuck is that?" Jay grumbled to himself. Since he had lived there, the only people who had knocked his door were food delivery drivers, and this evening he hadn't ordered his dinner yet.

Dismissing his first instinct to ignore the knock and pretend there was no one home, Jay sighed and got up off the pouch.

Whoever was at the door knocked again.

"Alright, Jesus Christ," he grumbled to himself on the way to the door. Feeling ready to tell whoever was there to fuck off, he yanked the door open.

"Surprise!" Erin said, standing there with her arms spread out triumphantly.

Jay stood there looking at her, lost for words, totally surprised. She was wearing a smart, expensive dark blue suit and white blouse, and apparently didn't have any luggage with her.

"Want me to help you with that?" she asked with a giggle.

"With what?" he asked as his mouth reluctantly started working again.

"Picking your chin up off the floor," she said, giggling. "Safe to say my surprise worked. Are you going to invite me in? And maybe smile?"

Jay's brain finally caught up. Erin had been in the office that morning, he knew that. To be here by now she would have had to leave early afternoon at the latest to get a flight. She had no travel case with her, so it had presumably been a spur of the moment decision to come.

"Of course, come in. I'm just... not processing. No one has done something amazing like this to surprise me before."

Erin stepped into the apartment and gave him a peck on the lips. "I was missing my man. And, thinking that you've been making more effort than me in this relationship recently, I talked my dad into letting me have the afternoon off and borrow the jet to come over here. Full transparency, he only did that because of something that happened this morning. He wants me to 'take time to prepare myself mentally.' Anyway, here I am. I didn't even go home to pack a case."

WWE had a corporate jet. Jay had been on it once, but not for a jaunt halfway across the country to spend the night with someone. But the boss wasn't his dad. Forget the damn jet, he told himself crossly, and hugged her. Simply being able to hold her felt so nice.

"This means the world, Erin. I just... don't know what to say. Thank you for making the effort. I love you."

She kissed him again. "That's all you need to say. I love you too. Can I get myself a drink? I'm dying."

"My place is your place," Jay said openly, following her into the kitchen. "I, uh, don't have much in as far as drinks are concerned. Water, milk, coffee or beer."

"Beer is what I was looking for, since I knew you wouldn't have wine. I need a drink today." Erin opened the fridge and took out a bottle of beer. She handed it to Jay, then took one for herself.

Jay's keys were on the kitchen counter. There was a bottle opener on his key ring. He used it to crack open both of their bottles, then touched his against hers. "Cheers. Thank you again for coming over. You make me so happy."

"Likewise. Cheers." Erin smiled, then gratefully downed most of the beer in one go.

Jay stood there staring, surprised yet again.

"What?" she asked with a laugh. "You think I can't drink because I've got a rich dad?"

He laughed too. "Something like that. I should know better by now. Grab another couple of bottles and we'll go sit down."

"You grab the beers, I'll hang my jacket up."

They went through to the living area after Erin hung her jacket by the front door. Jay carried the beer bottles over to the coffee table, and they settled down together on the couch.

"I was actually thinking about you right before you knocked on the door," he said to get conversation going again. He was getting better at that, at least when talking with Erin.

"Oh, really? Now I'm interested."

Jay looked at her, sitting there wearing a smart blouse and half of a perfectly tailored suit, with a bottle of beer in her hand and a relaxed smile on her face. She was a contradiction in some ways, but damn she was such an amazing, down to earth person, and she was beautiful too. The love of his life, that was what she was.

"Honestly, I'm hoping I'm not about to offend you. I was thinking about your offer to move in."

Erin remained relaxed. "Unless you're about to tell me you'd rather drink sulphuric acid than share a house with me, I doubt you'll offend me."

He laughed nervously. "I'm definitely not going to say that. Obviously I want to live with you. I see our future as living together of course. I love you, and I want to spend as much time as I can with you. Eagle's Nest is incredible too."

Erin took his hand as he spoke. "There's a 'but' coming. Don't feel uneasy, Jay. Tell me what's on your mind. Communication is key in strong relationships."

Jay felt his anxiety flaring up, but he got the words out. "I'm afraid to completely give up my independence. And I'm not sure if at first it will feel like I'm a lodger in your house, not that Eagle's Nest is my home."

For a moment, Erin considered that. Jay, as always, waited for a hammer to fall on him. But it didn't. "I think that's fair enough," was her initial verdict. "If I had expected to ask you to move in so soon I would have gotten you involved in choosing furniture and stuff, but I can't go back now. And I understand why you feel like you want to keep this place as a... can I say a safety net?"

She really does understand, Jay thought, feeling emotional all of a sudden. A safety net was exactly what he wanted. "Yes. Yes that's exactly it. So I was thinking maybe I could kind of part time move in to begin with?"

"That works for me," she readily agreed.

"Great," Jay said, breathing a sigh of relief.

"Have a drink," she encouraged, handing him his beer bottle. "We'll make plans whenever you're ready."

"You said something happened this morning?" he enquired, diverting the conversation away from himself at the first opportunity.

"Yes, it did. Can you open this please?" Erin pushed her second beer towards him along the table top. She finished her first bottle as he opened the second for her.

"Thank you," she said. "So, today was the board meeting where the top item on the agenda was the official vote on me being appointed Head of Creative. The vote was a formality, as they had all given verbal approval on it at a meeting weeks ago, and of course it went through today. However, someone threw a curve ball afterwards, bringing forward a motion that as I'm going to take on one of the company's most important positions, I should be on the board of directors."

"I thought your dad didn't want that?" Jay asked, listening intently now.

"He didn't. He told me that himself, and he told the board at the previous meeting too. Some of them didn't agree, clearly. It went to a vote this morning, and it passed by one vote."

Jay didn't understand much of the corporate stuff, but he thought he understood what the outcome was. "That means you're on the board of directors?"

"It sure does," Erin said proudly. "With the way our company structure works, it changes my new job title. I'll now be Vice President of Creative."

"That sounds great," Jay said with a big smile on his face. "Forgive my ignorance, but what benefit is there to being on the board? Like, why is it important?"

"It gives me a vote on all significant company business. It increases my reputation in the business world. And it pays, too. With my on-screen talent contract, my VP of Creative contract, and being on the board, I'll almost make as much as you." She gave him a cheeky grin.

Jay's contract was for a million dollars a year. Only the top guys on the main roster made that kind of money. He felt proud of Erin for her accomplishment, even though he still didn't really get the significance of being on the board.

"I'm proud of you, Erin. You deserve it," he said, giving her a kiss.

"I'm not sure about that in all honesty, but I'll take it. What matters most to me is that I have someone to celebrate it with."

"Who's that?" Jay said deadpan.

As always, his humour worked and she laughed loudly. "That would be you."

"Oh! Right," he said, laughing too. "If we're celebrating, I'd better order us some food in. Whatever you want, you can have. You are the boss now after all."

Erin winced. "I am not the boss. My dad is the boss, and that's going to be the case as long as he's around."

"I know. But teasing you about it is fun."
