Early Saturday afternoon, backstage at the massive SoFi Stadium ahead of night one of Wrestlemania, Hank Voigt had instructed every member of WWE's main roster to assemble in a conference room. About ten rows of metal chairs had been set out for the purpose.
Arriving ahead of most of his colleagues, Jay had managed to grab himself a seat a couple of rows back, sitting next to Gabby Dawson. He considered that it would have been a stroke of luck if he had ended up next to Clementine, bearing in mind Erin's challenge of sorts to try and form a friendship with her. But, looking around the room now that it was full, he couldn't even see Clementine. He did notice that the last wrestlers to arrive had been left to stand at the back of the room. There were not enough chairs for everyone.
"What's this about?" Gabby quietly asked him.
"I don't know," Jay said honestly. He hadn't seen Hank or Erin since breakfast, when they had headed off to talk business.
"Really?" The way she said it and the way she looked at him made it actually mean: 'We all know you're banging the boss's daughter. You must know.'
"Yes, really," he snapped back, resolving himself to ignore the woman for the rest of the meeting, if that's what this was.
Hank and Erin walked down the aisle from the back of the room to stand at the front. Now Jay really wondered what was going on. The church and state rule could be damn annoying. Erin was dressed casually in black pants and a black fleece jacket with a WWE logo on it, yet she still looked so hot to Jay.
Hank opened the meeting by thanking everyone for being there, as if it had been optional. Then he thanked everyone for their hard work over the past year, and reminded them about the traditional post-Wrestlemania party that would take place on Sunday night. All drinks and food would be at WWE's expense. It was a nice annual treat for the employees.
"I do have an important announcement to make," Hank went on. "As of this coming Monday, my daughter Erin is going to be promoted to Vice President of Creative. What that means is that all questions, concerns, discussions, whatever, regarding creative and your characters, you'll need to speak to Erin, and only to Erin. Do not try to come to me about any of those things because all I'll do is tear a strip off your ass for not listening in this meeting, then send you to see her. For anything other than character development and creative, you'll speak to me as normal. Is anyone finding that in any way unclear?"
Jay heard some murmuring around the room. It sounded pretty discontented, but no one was brave enough to speak up. It didn't surprise Jay. People, and particularly wrestlers, were resistant to change. It was also inevitable that under Erin's reign some people who had been seen as top stars would slip down the card, while other people would go in the opposite direction.
Looking at Erin in that moment, Jay felt so proud of her. She was strong and successful in the business world – a world that he had little understanding of. He wished he could tell her how he was feeling right then, but of course he could not.
Telling everyone to enjoy Wrestlemania, Hank called the meeting to a close, and he and Erin headed up the aisle, with everyone letting them be the first to leave.
Later that day, the first night of Wrestlemania was in full swing. The fourth match of the night was Sylvie Brett vs Erin Voight.
Before each match, there was a video package for the TV audience at home and the fans in the stadium, recapping the rivalry for the upcoming match.
Jay was with Erin and Sylvie at the production area just inside the curtain. He had made sure to be there for Erin, ahead of her first and possibly only match. It had seemed obvious to him that she would be nervous, but she actually seemed to be enjoying herself.
"Thank you for this, boss. It means a lot to me," Sylvie said as the two women briefly hugged each other for good luck.
"It means a lot to me too, Sylvie. Let's have some fun," Erin said.
Next, Erin came over to Jay. He looked at her in the special one piece black leather ring attire she'd had made for the occasion. It was quite a tight fit, especially around her ass, as he had enjoyed noticing earlier. To say it was hot would have been a major understatement.
"Good luck, honey," he said after she pecked him on the lips. It was the first time he had called her that, and he liked it. "You'll have a blast out there."
"Thank you. I will," Erin said cheerfully.
Out in the stadium, the video package had finished. Sylvie's entrance music hit, drawing quite a cheer from the fans. Being in the rivalry with Erin had helped Sylvie to become popular, and the fans definitely all wanted to see Erin get her ass kicked and lose. Tonight, Sylvie was the one who could make that happen.
"I'll see you after the match. Enjoy," Jay said to Erin as Sylvie walked through the curtain. He wanted Erin to have the final minute or two before her entrance alone to focus her mind on performing.
"Will do," Erin promised.
With that, Jay left the production area and hurried towards the men's locker room. He could watch the match from there, and wanted to be back in time for Erin's entrance. Out in the stadium, he could hear the ring announcer's voice over the top of Sylvie's music.
"Introducing first, from Fowlerton, Indiana, Dr Sylvie Brett!"
Jay reached the locker room as Sylvie was completing her entrance. There were metal chairs arranged for people who wanted to watch the show on room's TV. There was a free one next to Adam Ruzek, so Jay took that one.
"How's Erin?" Ruzek asked.
"Confident. Excited," Jay reported. "She's going to do a good job."
"Yeah, I think she will," Ruzek said.
Sylvie's music faded out. Seconds later, Erin's music hit. It was greeted with loud booing. The fans were definitely going to be invested in this match. That wasn't always the case, especially for a contest between two inexperienced wrestlers. One hadn't even had a match before. But to the crowd none of that mattered. If Erin lost, they would be delighted. If she somehow won, they would be furious. Jay already knew the plan was for Sylvie to win, but that was all he knew. He was going to find out along with everyone else exactly what was going to go down.
Jay watched almost spellbound as Erin walked to the ring with swagger and arrogance, playing her character perfectly as always. She looked unimaginably beautiful to him.
"And her opponent," the ring announcer began, "one of the owners of WWE, Erin Voight!"
Erin entered the ring and posed with her hands on her hips. More boos rained down, but she only seemed to revel in them.
The match soon got underway. It wasn't an impressive contest athletically, which Jay had frankly expected, but he discovered that Erin had written a way to keep the heat going. The stories of the match became Erin cheating, and the suspicious behaviour of the female referee, Deonna Purrazzo, who kept allowing the cheating to happen even though she could see it. The commentary team were soon speculating as to whether Erin had paid off the official. The rule-breaking and the referee's inaction to stop it had the fans raging, and therefore even more behind Sylvie than they had been at the start of the contest.
After almost fifteen minutes, longer than Jay had thought the match would go, Sylvie finally managed to hit a big move on Erin. The move was called a DDT, and resulted in Erin's head being driven into the mat with a loud crash. Jay couldn't tell if Erin took it really well and made it look good, or if she took it badly and it ended up looking good because it actually hurt her. Either way, the fans popped, expecting it to be enough for Sylvie to get the three count and the victory.
Sylvie rolled Erin onto her back and lay on top of her, pinning her down. But the referee didn't get down to make the count. Instead, Purrazzo stood there with her arms folded, shaking her head, a stubborn pout on her face. The noise from the crowd rose even more, now in anger at the blatant conspiracy that was unfolding.
Livid at being robbed, Sylvie got up and started walking towards Purrazzo, looking like she was ready to knock the official out. But suddenly Kim Burgess rolled into the ring as if from nowhere, and she cracked Sylvie in the back of the head with her nightstick. Naturally, Sylvie collapsed to the mat.
Then Zelina Vega appeared in the ring, also on Erin's side. Vega and Burgess set about kicking the hell out of the helpless Sylvie, while Purrazzo helped Erin to her feet.
With the fans booing, Vega and Burgess slowly hauled Sylvie to her feet. At this point, she was barely conscious.
"Now you'd better count to three. You hear me?" Erin snarled at Purrazzo, apparently ready to apply a finishing touch to Sylvie and win the match.
The arena filled with sound of a diamond breaking, the intro to Clementine's music. Known as the Diamond in the Rough, her character was a badass who only had loyalty to one person – herself. At any given time it was hard to tell who she might attack or why. But given the timing of the intervention, it seemed obvious on this occasion that she was coming to help Sylvie. For that reason, plus the shock return of a fan favourite, the crowd erupted. Jay saw people jump out of their seats, hands in the air. It had been a long time since he had heard a reaction like it.
"Oh shit!" Ruzek exclaimed in excitement, caught up in the moment even as a member of the roster.
With the commentators and fans alike losing their minds, Clementine came walking menacingly down the long entrance ramp, carrying a black baseball bat.
Erin was shown in the ring with a panicked look on her face. Directing traffic, she sent Vega and Burgess out to deal with Clementine before she could make it to the ring.
Burgess was the first one out of the ring, rushing up the ramp with her nightstick at the ready. Clementine met her halfway down the ramp, and had a greater reach with her weapon. She blasted Burgess in the stomach with the baseball bat, to another thunderous cheer from the fans. Now they knew for sure that Clementine was coming to attack Erin, not to help her.
Vega came next, also receiving a shot to the stomach with the baseball bat. Another cheer erupted.
With two of Erin's lackeys knocked down, Clementine proceeded to the ring, where only referee Purrazzo was standing, Erin having bailed to the outside. As Clementine slid under the bottom rope, Purrazzo had her hands up, trying to beg off what was coming. It didn't work. Clementine swung her bat a third time, smashing the referee in the stomach and taking her out of the equation.
Incredibly, Burgess was back on her feet and back in the ring. She rushed Clementine, but not quite quickly enough. Clementine was able to smash her in the stomach with the bat for a second time, this time taking her out for good.
Up on the ramp, Zelina Vega was getting to her feet. Thinking better of trying to go back to the ring, she started retreating up the ramp.
Meanwhile, Erin cautiously slid back into the ring behind Clementine, obviously hoping for a sneak attack. But, like Burgess before her, she wasn't quick enough, and she too got a baseball bat to the stomach. That one got the biggest pop of all from the fans.
With everyone in the ring dealt with, Clementine rolled under the bottom rope and set off up the ramp after Vega. Zelina saw her coming and ran, holding her stomach, reaching the stage and disappearing through the curtain. Clementine wasn't far behind her, moving well on her rebuilt knee, with the fans still giving her a standing ovation and cheering her on. Both women disappeared from view.
"Kicked four women's asses and her baseball cap didn't even come off," Ruzek commented to Jay in the locker room.
Jay laughed, but his attention was still on the screen. The match was not over. So far, he loved what Erin had written, but a poor ending could still spoil it.
Erin was down thanks to Clementine, and Sylvie was down thanks to the ass kicking she had received prior to Clementine's arrival. A replacement referee came down the ramp, sliding into the ring.
Both selling their injuries, Erin and Sylvie started to get back up, regaining their feet at roughly the same time.
Erin swung for Sylvie, missed wildly, and Sylvie hit her with Clementine's finishing move called the Diamond Cutter, slamming Erin face first to the mat. Borrowing the move seemed fitting after what had just happened.
Exhausted, it was an effort for Sylvie to roll Erin onto her back and cover her, but she managed it and the referee was right there to make the count. The crowd delighted in counting along.
"One!"
"Two!"
"Three!"
"Very good," Jay opined, immediately getting up. He wanted to be at the curtain when Erin came back through it to congratulate her.
"Yeah. Erin did good considering she's not a wrestler," Ruzek said in admiration.
Feeling very proud, Jay left the locker room and walked to the production area. When he got there, Erin hadn't yet returned. Kim and Zelina had apparently made themselves scarce. Clementine was the only wrestler there, standing there with her fake baseball bat and a smile on her face. Jay figured he could strike up a conversation, not that he was particularly good at doing so. Out in the arena, Sylvie's music was playing as she celebrated her victory.
"Nice job, Clem," he said. "That must have felt good?"
"Amazing. Thank you," Clementine said, shaking her head at how incredible she found it. "All that rehab was worth it for that crowd reaction. It blew my mind. Erin's so good too, considering she's not even a wrestler."
"I'm very impressed. And proud," Jay said, smiling.
"You should be," Clementine said.
Then Erin walked through the curtain. She looked roughed up, tired, but on top of the world. Clementine stood back, allowing Jay to be the first to go to her.
"Erin! Wow! You did so well. I couldn't be more proud right now," he said as they embraced each other.
Erin hugged him tightly. "Thank you, honey. That was awesome. Can't even tell you how much I enjoyed it. And I don't think I screwed anything up?"
"Absolutely not," Jay said, and gave her a peck on the lips. "You smashed it out of the park. What a finish you wrote too, with Clem's return. Chef's kiss."
"Thank you," Erin said again, beaming. "What a night."
What a night indeed, Jay thought. And it wasn't over. He still had Raquel's main event match to look forward to.
A/N: I hope you enjoyed what Erin came up with for her match?
Happy new year everyone. Thank you all for your amazing support in 2022. Only love.
