Penelope sighed as she tried to subtly hover on the edge of the dancefloor hoping anyone would ask her to dance. Well not just anyone. She had been waiting for one particular person to ask her to dance. But these balls could be long and tedious especially when everybody including your family ignored you.
"Pen!" Well this evening was looking brighter. Colin Bridgerton, the very person she had been hoping to see was making his way towards her.
"Colin! I did not know you would be here." But she had been hoping and praying he would be.
"Sorry to disappoint you." As if that could ever happen. "Have you seen Miss Thompson?" Alright maybe it could.
"She is ill. My mama had to stay home with her." Which had been somewhat of a relief. "Papa had to chaperone." An even larger relief. "I'm quite enjoying the fact that he is here." Even though he forgot I existed seconds after we walked in the door. "Mama would never allow me to wear a dress like this. Not uh yellow enough I think." For one evening I don't look like a giant grapefruit.
"Mr Bridgerton." Of course Cressida Cowper is here. "I believe you owe me a dance this evening." Well I believe you almost stood on me. "And I have only one more space remaining on my card at present." Well go forth and get thee another card.
"How convenient." That witch has just drenched me with her drink. Wonderful, just wonderful. Now she's going to imply it was an accident.
"Penelope, I did not see you there." Sure you didn't. You sashayed over here with a loaded cup. Why couldn't she have ruined one of the yellow dresses?
"I'm afraid I can not offer you that dance, Miss Cowper." Wait, what? "I am to escort Miss Featherington to the floor." Really? Colin wants dance with me when I'm drenched in lemonade? And not a particularly good batch of lemonade at that.
Oh God! He's actually holding my hand and leading me to the dancefloor. So, I would have preferred a waltz but I'll take what I can get. Its a lively dance but I am in Colin's arms and for now it is perfect. I do not need anyone else to dance with me. My life is complete, at least for tonight.
But the dance comes to an end all too soon and Colin thanks me for the dance and disappears into the crowd. I can live off that one dance for weeks if not months. I can fool myself into believing that he sees me as more than is sister's friend.
The warmth of his hand on my waist left in his absence keeps the chill that is in the air from me. It was worth getting Cressida's drink thrown on me for a few moments in Colin's arms. My dreams will be sweet tonight and I am floating on air for the rest of the evening.
