Ch. 43 Amity's rising stars

"...lovely weather isn't it!"

"Shut it RNJR! You better lose quickly, I don't want to get wet!"

Nora was about to provide a witty retort when a countdown interrupted her.

"3…2…1!"

The booming voice of Peter Port filled the coliseum and set the stage for the first match of today.

The stage was already set, environments picked and the teams stood against each other. One side a winter wasteland sparsely covered with trees. The other a stormy looking mountain range with dark clouds looming above.

Team RNJR stood ankle deep in snow, almost expecting a snowstorm to descend on them. Opposite them stood team BRNZ, equally dreading the coming storm.

"Begin!"

Ruby wasted no time in getting away from the action, distancing herself from the centre of the arena and into the snowy wastes.

Jaune and Nora on the other hand pushed team BRNZ into close quarters, while Ren provided support.

"And so we begin! As team BRNZ's May Zedong retreats into a sniping position, so does the leader of RNJR, Ruby Rose! It would seem RNJR is acutely aware of BRNZ's strengths and are keen to force a mirror match! And the gloves are off! Shots sound out from both sides as the respective snipers provide support for their teams! What's this!? BRNZ seems to have decided to split the fight further. Oh, mister Arc retreats further into the frozen wastes, followed by messrs Stallion and Porfirio. Leader of BRNZ seems to be planning to take on both mister Ren and miss Valkyrie! But Lie Ren engages Brawnz Ni in close quarters, providing miss Valkyrie the opportunity to go after miss Zedong!"

"And in true mirror match fashion mister Porfirio attempts to go after the team leader of RNJR, but to no avail! Ladies and gentlemen, we've lost sight of Ruby Rose!"

"And we have our first out! Mister Lie Ren suffers broken aura from being shot by miss Zedong! I wonder how that will affect the match, Bart."

"Speaking of affecting the match, the weather effects have entered the game! The mountain range is being ravaged by lightning, while the frozen wastes are covered by a raging white snowstorm!"

"Truly unfortunate for team BRNZ and those of you unfamiliar with miss Valkyrie will no doubt soon find out."

A crack of lightning sounded above the mountain followed by a "GET FUCKED BRNZ!" from Nora.

"Language miss Valkyrie! And… oooh that looked like it hurt. Both miss Zedong and mister Brawnz suffer an out of bounds knockout! You'd think miss Valkyrie was playing golf with her opponents! How's the other side looking, Peter?"

"Things are heating up around mister Arc. Quite literally might I add. As both remaining members of team BRNZ battle against him, mister Arc seems to have produced a veritable firestorm around himself, turning the ground around him into slush. Miss Rose's continued sniper support is accompanied by flashes of red throughout the whiteout as miss Rose uses her semblance to keep moving. A stark contrast to miss Zedong's approach."

"Ah yes, and I have just received information about mister Arc's firestorm. It would appear miss Rose and mister Arc have filed multiple patents focusing on dust alloys and this is simply an application of their latest one. A semi stable combination of fire and air dust alloys, likely incorporated into mister Arc's armour."

"Fascinating stuff Bart, but it seems the match is nearing its end, as mister Stallion succubus to aura exhaustion and is OUT! Can mister Porfitio reverse the outcome? No, as he avoided Arc's blade he stumbled straight into the way of miss Rose's final attack! And as the weather dies down we have our winners! Team RNJR wins against team BRNZ while only losing a single combatant!"

"And our next match of the day is about to begin! I hope everyone in the audience is sufficiently refreshed and back to their seats. Let's see which teams the lottery pits against each other, as well as the arena environment!"

"And the results are in! The arena is currently taking its shape as its environments move into place! As you can all see, the environments chosen for this match are the grassland and the desert. Both of these are fairly simple straightforward biomes, however don't let that fool you there is still plenty the teams can do with these environments. Speaking of teams, Peter, why don't you introduce them."

"Of course, Bart. Starting in the grasslands we have a team of second year students from Vale! They have distinguished themselves as the strongest team in Beacon. Their teamwork is legendary! Welcome to the stage team CFVY! And starting in the desert sands we have a first year team from Vale! Home to the most terrifying partnership Beacon has seen in decades. Hailed as the infamous strongest first years! Welcome team SWNY!"

"Team CFVY is well known for their team leader, the Queen of Fashion and Destruction, Coco Adel. And today she seems to have brought out the big guns from the start. And for good reason. Team SWNY contains not only the Champion of Mistral, the invincible girl herself, Pyrrha Nicos, but also her partner, Beacons Sunny Dragon, Yang Xiao-Long! This is going to be a difficult fight. Peter, do begin the countdown."

"3…2…1! Begin!"

"And miss Adel is the first to attack! Laying down fire from her machinegun, making sure SWNY has to either run, or get through her attack! And the team SWNY responds by splitting into pairs! While their team leader mister Sky Lark along with his partner Cardin Winchester take advantage of the terrain and disappear behind the sand dunes, miss Xiao-Long chooses to propel herself towards CFVY. Blowing clouds of sand into the air, providing cover for miss Nikos to close the distance as well. Their well coordinated attack proves to be effective as miss Adel is forced to move, leaving mister Yatsuhashi Daichi to deal with the force of nature that is Yang Xiao-Long."

"And while those unfamiliar with the abilities of miss Xiao long may assume her weakened after being on the receiving end of the hell of bullets, the opposite is true. Mister Daichi, despite his large stature, is pushed back after each blow he blocks! Meanwhile mister Fox Alistar took advantage of the sand screen created by Xiao-Long and disappeared into the dunes, no doubt going after the male half of SWNY! Miss Nikos meanwhile engages Velvet Scarlatina in close quarters. It's a close matchup, but it seems miss Scarlatina is being pushed back. And in an incredible show of coordination miss Scarlatina jumps out of the way of her own leader's string of bullets! Miss Nikos is forced to move and defend herself with her shield. But what is this?"

"It would seem miss Scarlatina is discarding parts of her armour! Perhaps she believes the extra weight to be slowing her down. Let's see how well that strategy pans out! And not a moment too soon does she return her focus on Nikos as a long distance shot from mister Lark interrupts miss Adel! It would seem that mister Alistar failed to occupy both combatants and let the leader of SWNY escape."

"Back to miss Scarlatina though, it seems her gamble paid off as she is currently successfully pushing back the Champion of Mistral! Miss Scarlatina seems to be able to predict the direction of the incoming blows!"

"On the other side of the arena, the match between Fox Alistar and Cardin Winchester is coming to a close. While both combatants lost around half of their aura during their initial interaction, since mister Lark took his vantage point on top of the dunes, the match turned distinctly in mister Winchester's favour. Mister Lark of course has been on the move ever since the beginning of the battle, and continues to change his position in order to avoid miss Adel's machinegun. Despite this, miss Adel's support fire, whether aimed at Nikos or Xiao-Long is always short lived, as mister Lark interrupts her and pulls her attention to himself."

"Indeed, excellent analysis, Bart. And we have our first knockout as mister Alistar's aura dips below the limit and is OUT! Things don't look good for team CFVY."

"Ah, but while the team leaders provide support, we have two very different fights on our hands as mister Daichi continues to struggle against miss Xiao-Long in a match of strength and endurance, miss Scarlatina is pushing back against miss Nikos in a fight of skill and technique! Truly excellent showmanship, wouldn't you agree Peter!"

"Yes of course, but let's not forget mister Winchester as he approaches the fray, unnoticed by the other combatants! And miss Scarlatina dodges his surprise attack and returns a vicious blow to the nether regions. A painful sight for all male members of the audience, especially since it broke his aura. Mister Winchester is OUT! But he made up for the loss by providing miss Nikos a much needed opportunity to retaliate! And Velvet Scarlatina is OUT as her aura dips below the limit, courtesy of a devastating blow from a thrown shield."

"This decisively turned the tides against team CFVY as miss Nikos engages miss Adel in close quarters. It's a close matchup, however mister Lark comes to assist miss Xiao-Long. A wait… No, it would seem that mister Lark took miss Xiao-Longs place against mister Daichi! And the infamous pair of first years team up against the leader of team CFVY! I'm afraid miss Adel stands little chance against two masters of close quarters combat. She is putting up a good fight but miss Xiao-Long activates the full extent of her semblance and delivers a devastating blow! It would seem it was the plan all along to let miss Xiao-Long charge up her semblance to use against the nearly uninjured team leader. And with that final blow from miss Xiao-Long miss Adel is OUT on account of broken aura. But where miss Adel failed mister Daichi succeeds as despite mister Larks best efforts, Yatsuhashi Daichi's superior physical prowess proves victorious, knocking mister Lark out of the arena!"

"Yes, unfortunately for mister Daichi, he now faces the combined might of the Champion of Mistral and Beacon's Sunny Dragon. Oh and what a shocking finish! Indeed mister Daichi surrenders, and with his aura mere slivers above the limit I'd say it was a wise decision. After all, a true warrior knows when he is defeated."

"But with that, without further ado, we can officially announce the winner of this match - team SWNY!"

"Welcome back everyone! Our last match of today is about to begin, so without further suspense let us see who'll end up participating in this match!"

"And we have our results! On one side, in a model of ruined urban environment, an all male team from Haven! Please welcome team SSSN! And on the other side of the arena, on a ship beached in the shallows of the ocean, The all female team from Beacon. Welcome to the arena team BSMT!"

"Team SSSN is comprised of huntsmen that no small part of the female audience will no doubt recognise. Though the most recognisable member would no doubt be mister Sun Wukong, team leader and infamous troublemaker. On the other side, team BSMT's members are both attractive and dangerous, yet there's one huntress the public will no doubt recognise! Miss Weiss Schnee, a celebrity in her own right thanks to her voice, and heiress to the Schnee Dust Company."

"I have no doubt both teams will put up a good showing. Now if you would Peter?"

"Of course! 3…2…1! Begin!"

"And the match begins with a lightning fast retreat into the urban ruins from Neptune Vasilias, swiftly followed by Sage Ayana. In pursuit of them are Cocra McMahon and Maroon Tailor from team BSMT, passing by Sun Wukong and Scarlet David without either pair engaging. Mister Wukong is quick to focus on the other team leader, miss Blake Belladonna, as both climb the masts of the shipwreck. Mister David meanwhile is engaged by miss Schnee before he could even reach the boat in question."

"Indeed, meanwhile within the ruined city a high speed chase is taking place, as mister Vasilias flees from miss Tailor. Mister Ayana is proving to be the braver man by engaging miss McMahon in combat. Unfortunately, Miss McMahon has the advantage in this environment, since mister Ayana is restricted by the size of his sword."

"Meanwhile on the other side of the arena, mister David is struggling against miss Schnee's control of the elements, as she manages to bring the temperature down enough to freeze the water around misted David. While he returns fire with his flintlock pistol, miss Schnee blocks those attempts with her semblance. As for the team leaders, a battle of clones has developed as mister Wukong has secured the crow's nest for himself and is relying on his semblance to chase after miss Belladonna. Miss Belladonna meanwhile is using a combination of her own semblance and her weapon to move around the ship's masts."

"And in an unfortunate turn of events, mister Ayana is OUT. His tactic to deal with confined spaces of tight alleys by moving the fight to the roofs has backfired on him as miss McMahon pushed him out of bounds."

"And it seems miss Schnee is preparing to end her fight with Scarlet David. And… Oooh, what an upset. Mister Vasilias's mad scramble to escape from miss Tailor ended up with him jumping out of a window, straight into miss Schnee's attack. As messrs David and Vasilias are now encased up to their necks in ice, it is up to mister Wukong to do something about it before they get eliminated."

It was then that Sun called out to Blake.

"I would like to offer conditional surrender!"

"What conditions?"

"I want you to promise to go on a date with me later."

Blake blushed, considering the offer for a few seconds.

"Fine, but you're paying for everything."

"Great, it's a date! Team SSSN surrenders!"

"And what an end to the day! Team SSSN surrenders under conditions that are sure to break some hearts in the audience! And with that, team BSMT is victorious!"

Author's note:

A little bit of flirty fun at the end there, though I absolutely believe this is something Sun would do in that situation.

Regarding the stadium commentary style most of this chapter is written in, I'm just trying something different in how I write my fight scenes, though I probably wont write the rest of the festival like this.

As for my personal life, exams are killing me. I've slept three hours today, had an exam in the morning and I think I'm coming down with a cold. The joys of a mortal body I guess.
