In a room filled to the brim with books, a six year old boy with slicked back green hair, pointed ears and bright blue eyes wearing a purple and red collared long sleeve shirt sat on a small chair with a bunny doll in front of him. "Okay. If my theory is correct, magic is like a program. Theoretically, I can split a spell into multiple functions that can be called upon at any moment." The boy said in a tone unbefitting of his young age before he very slowly drew a purple magical circle in the air with his finger. Once the circle was complete, the doll started to glow purple. "Let's try it with telekinesis. A small program that moves the X and Y values."
The boy moved his finger to the left of the magic circle, causing the doll to start moving in the direction of his left. The boy threw his hands in the air with a cheer before he heard a loud splatter. He looked up to see his doll with its insides covering the ceiling of his room. "They make it look so easy on tv." The boy grumbled before sighing. "Let's start over."
"ODWIN!" Exclaimed a loud female voice from downstairs, causing the boy, Odwin, to flinch. The boy grumbled silently before turning around and heading for the door of his room.
"Coming!" The boy exclaimed followed by a silent grumble before he started heading downstairs. Odwin's mind wandered to his current circumstances as he took on the stairs step by step. He wondered how he got here again.
He used to be a teenage programmer with a future in the tech industry. All that was ended by a single loose wire that led to death by electrocution. When he woke up, he found himself a baby in the world of a cartoon he watched once with a friend as a witch no less. A baby belonging to the worst family in the entire goddamn show. The Blight Family. A greedy control freak of a mother, a neglectful father and siblings who'd bully each other. Odwin was glad they were at least rich.
Once Odwin made it downstairs, he found his mother, Odalia Blight standing with crossed arm and an equally crossed expression. Next to her were a duo of four year olds and a two year old napping on the couch. His younger siblings, Edric, Emira and Amity. Just the sight of them made Odwin groan as he met "his mother".
"Finally! What took you so long?!" Exclaimed Odalia pinching the bridge of her nose in exasperation. Odwin didn't answer, opting to avoid eye contact instead. "Whatever. Watch your siblings and keep them out of the workshop while me and your father are out. They've been making a ruckus in there and we can't have any defects in our products in front of the investors."
"What?!" Exclaimed Odwin with widened eyes before making an X with his arms as his mind thought back to his failure of an experiment. "Absolutely not! I have important stuff to do!"
Odalia scoffed at her eldest son. "You? Important?" She said with a frown as gestured towards Odwin. "You can barely make a simple spell work. The most useful thing you can do is help your family. So go do something actually useful and take care of your siblings."
Odwin was about to argue before Odalia glared down at him. He never really considered Odalia as his mother, but the boy's body froze under the pressure of Odalia's gaze. "Y-yes, ma'am." He said fidgeting with his fingers. Hearing this, Odalia raised a brow in confusion before shaking it out of her mind.
"We'll be back at 8." She said firmly as she walked towards the front door, opening it as she gave her son a frim gaze. "I expect to find nothing out of place when I come back." She declared with a frown before leaving, closing the door behind her.
Silence descended upon the room. The four siblings stared at each other with varying thoughts occupying their minds. Edric and Emira were the first to break silence. "Hey, let's go into dad's workshop again!" Said Emira cheerfully, prompting Edric to nod and Odwin to sweatdrop.
"Absolutely not!" Exclaimed the eldest blight hurriedly as he stood in front of the twins. "Your mom's gonna kill me if she finds something wrong! You want that? You want me dead?" After a momentary pause, Edric and Emira nodded cheerfully. Odwin froze at his two's gesture, staring at his younger siblings in shock before the twins dashed past their older brother towards their father's workshop. Odwin quickly tried to catch them only for a nearby curtain to wrap around his body, keeping him in place as the twins left the room uninterrupted. "Hey! No fair! You know I'm bad at magic!"
Odwin grumbled as he struggled to get out of the curtains before he turned to the sleeping Amity. "Suppose you won't be helping me any time soon." Grumbled the boy tiredly before continuing to struggle until he was finally out. "What did I do to deserve this? I didn't even watch the show by choice!"
Odwin grumbled grumpily as he trudged towards the basement, also known as his father's workshop. The man was brilliant with his creations, even a software person like him could say that. It brought upon a feeling of inferiority when looking at his own meagre magical ability.
Whether it was the programmer part of his mind or some undiagnosed illness, something hindered his ability to control magic. He couldn't make it do what he wanted up front, he had to insert his own controls into the spell itself. Something resembling a computer program. This approach was far from flawless; it was less fluid and much MUCH slower to cast than regular spells as it required him to focus and put all the instructions into the spell line by line.
"But Odwin, why not learn glyph magic? You can do all kinds of stuff." Remarked the green haired boy mockingly with a deep frown as he descended down the stairs. "Of course, cause I can definitely draw a perfect circle 50 times without getting carpal tunnel." He muttered sarcastically before finally reaching the workshop and hearing the sounds of the brats who started this mess as they stood in front of a large bulky abomination.
"Woah!" "Think we can take it out?" Said the twins one after the other, not noticing the shadow looming over them. In a split moment, a pair of arms wrapped around them making sure to keep their hands immobile.
"Gotcha!" Exclaimed Odwin with a satisfied grin before Emira bit his arm almost instantly. "Ow! What the heck?!" The boy exclaimed in pain, giving the twins the chance to push his arms off of them, but not without Edric tripping into the large abomination next to them. Odwin and Emira watched in horror as the abomination eyes glowed green as they locked onto poor Edric.
"Uhh, why are you guys looking at me all weird?" He asked innocently, unaware of the danger behind him as the abomination raised its fist into the air ready to crush the poor four year old. "Do I have something on my face?"
Odwin quickly pulled Edric out of the, leaving the floor where he was standing to be crushed by the abomination. "Run!" The eldest Blight exclaimed, his siblings sharing the same sentiment as they all rushed upstairs with the abomination right on their tail. "Wait- Amity!" Exclaimed Odwin as he remembered his sleeping little sister, causing the twins to freeze as they also remembered their defenseless youngest.
The three quickly ran to the living room where Amity was sleeping, Odwin quickly carrying her away as Edric and Emira went on ahead while the abomination flung away the couches of their once neat living room into the walls, ruining all the decorations. "Oh, she's gonna kill me." Muttered Odwin staring at the destruction behind him before he and Amity were suddenly pulled into a room out of the abominations sight and shut the door. "What the-"
Odwin blinked in confusion at the sudden change of scenery. "The guest room?" Muttered Odwin blinking before turning around to find Edric and Emira standing in front of the shut door with relieved looks on their faces. Odwin placed the still sleeping Amity on the bed of the guest room before turning his gaze to his other siblings. He glared at the two troublemakers with the anger of a thousand suns, practically digging holes into their souls as they smiled nervously.
"We're sorry?" Emira took the initiative with an "innocent" expression as Edric did the same. Odwin went silent at the twins' act, his eye twitching as he restrained himself and his anger. The 6 year old sighed before ignoring his siblings and heading for the door. "What are you doing?" Asked Emira worriedly.
"That thing's still out there!" Added Edric in a panic, causing Odwin to sigh.
The blue eyed boy rolled his eyes. "Your mom's gonna kill me anyways." He said, a feeling of defeat seeping into his words. "I might as well risk it with the beast."
"But your magic's broken!" Odwin didn't know whether it was Edric or Emira that spoke, but hearing that made something inside him snap. His face went red as a tomato with frustration.
"Well, what am I supposed to do then?! Live my life locked up in the guest room because I suck?!" He yelled angrily, causing Edric and Emira to sweatdrop, not noticing Amity waking up behind him. "I'm sorry my brain isn't like yours! I need time and I can't just save my instructions for later!"
"Why not?" He heard a young voice behind him ask. It was Amity yawning as she woke up from her nap. Her innocent question made the eldest Blight's mind go into overdrive. It was such a simple question, yet it made him question everything. It made him think back to the most important part of the show, Glyph magic.
The boy suddenly rushed towards the nearest grabable object, a small pillow before he quickly drew a magical circle and left it floating above his palm before slowly drawing another. Once the second circle was completed, Odwin used the first circle to push it into the pillow, etching the spell into said pillow. The boy's younger siblings watched curiously as Odwin held the pillow to Amity with a serious expression before he quickly drew a magical circle, quicker than the norm for him and the pillow started to glow before the 2 year old Amity started floating.
"IT RUNS!" He exclaimed happily before he heard a crash from behind him as a large abomination hand broke through the door. Odwin quickly stopped his spell on Amity and turned his focus onto the abomination before drawing the activation circle once again, aiming his telekinesis spell inside the pillow at the abomination.
Odwin's spell quickly started to make the abomination float in the air. The abomination quickly started holding onto the doorway, trying to regain its footing. Seeing this, Odwin began to panic. "Uhh, you guys know how to give a spell more juice?"
Almost as if to answer his question, two telekinesis spells joined his against the abomination helping him push it harder towards the ceiling. Odwin looked around him to find the twins joining in against the abomination. The abomination was slowly but surely getting pushed back.
"Kids, have you seen my-" the Blights went silent hearing a certain voice speak. They turned to see its owner, a man with unkempt hair and messy clothes. It was their father, Alador Blight and he was blinking at their battle in confusion before dispelling the abomination with a swift spell circle.
"Uhh, please don't tell mom." Pleaded Odwin with widened eyes as Alador went silent.
He told mom and Odwin got grounded. But the boy was glad. He got something far more valuable that day. A reliable way to use magic and a way to keep his siblings in one place.
