CLARIFICATIONS: I DECIDED TO REWRITE THIS STORY, BECAUSE I FEEL IT WAS NOT RIGHT, IT STAYS AS I WANTED: CLEANED CONTENT, NEW WEAPONS AND MORE DEPTH IN SOME AREAS.
Foreword.
War, war never changes.
In the year 1945, my great-great-grandfather served in the army.
Wondering, when would he return home to his wife and the son he never saw?
And he got his wish. When the United States ended World War II.
Dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The world expected Armageddon, and instead something miraculous happened.
We began to use atomic energy not as a weapon, but as a new, inexhaustible source of energy.
People enjoyed luxuries thought only of science fiction: home burglaries, fusion-powered cars, laptops.
But later.
In the 21st century, people woke up from the American dream.
Years of rampant consumption led to a lack of major resources.
The whole world collapsed.
Peace, became a distant memory.
It is now the year 2077.
We are on the brink of all out war and I am afraid.
For me.
For my wife.
For my little son.
Because my time in the army taught me one thing.
that the war
war never changes
As the steam cleared from the mirror and cleared the view, a man who had finished shaving would look tired in the mirror. He had tanned Caucasian skin, hazel eyes, black-browed hair, a shaved beard leaving his skin exposed, and groomed hair. He was wearing a white shirt with jeans.
"War, war never changes" The tired man said to himself. He had heard it from a soldier who hated being in Alaska. Although he had finished his military service, he felt as if he were in the cold trenches, listening to explosions and gunshots.
"Tonight you're going to rock the Veteran's Hall, honey" Said a woman with fair skin, black eyes, eyebrows and light brown hair, her hair was cut to her neck with a wavy hairstyle, his wife Nora. He said as he approached him to kiss him on the cheek, he just gave a smile when he received the gesture. Perhaps he was a man traumatized by war, but he was still stable enough for a normal life.
"So you think?" I ask looking at her with a smile.
"Of course" she said. "Now finish it up and stop hogging the mirror." He would listen to his wife to get out of the bathroom and go to the kitchen to eat breakfast.
I turn right to go to the dining room where there was a shiny silver Mr. Handy, three eyes with the same number of tweezers he used for housework; It had a saw, a torch and a normal clamp to hold objects. He named himself Codsworth so that the family would recognize him, in his gripper he had a coffee pot. He was serving the contents in a white cup on the table. He turned one of his eyes to see his master.
The house had white and light blue paint, a blue kitchen, wooden furniture, red sofas, a television, a bathroom, his room with a double mattress, two pieces of furniture, a sofa, an American flag, a radio, a painting and a camera. Her son's room had a spaceship tapestry, a rug with the same design, a crib with a mobile, a red sofa, and a piece of furniture with his clothes.
"Ah, good morning, sir!" Codsworth said with a British accent. "Your coffee. Eighty degrees Celsius. Unbeatable!" He said to stop serving. "And today's newspaper, just delivered!"
"Thank you Codsworth" The man said as he took the cup and drank its contents. "Nothing bad".
"Of course Mr!" He said to retire and go to the laundry room.
He sat down in a chair at the table to continue drinking his coffee. He saw next to him a blue plastic plate with two holes. He lowered his head at that.
"I will never find that dog" he told himself. Two months ago the dog Milo was lost, a beautiful five-year-old Siberian Huski.
While he drank his coffee, a baby's cry would be heard in the distance.
"Ah, it seems that someone has evacuated! I must attend to young Shaun" Codsworth said to stop doing his homework and go see him.
"Haha. I was a little nervous at first, but Codsworth does great with Shaun."
"Yes, it was just like you when we bought it" Responding to his wife who had taken the newspaper and read the news.
"But I help a lot during my studies" He said while reading.
Nora was by far a smart woman, not for nothing had she graduated from Suffolk County Law School and was planning to get a job helping around the house.
He simply worked as a mechanic at a Red Rocket shop near Sanctuary to be close to his family. Besides, it helped him a lot when he had the aftermath of PTSD.
When you want to finish your coffee, the doorbell of the house will ring indicating that there was someone waiting outside.
"Can you take care of it? It must be that salesman, he's been looking for you every day."
The man would get up to go to the front door and open it. In the neighborhood there was a man in a trench coat and a light brown hat and he was wearing a white shirt with a red tie. Behind him was a dark blue car with white VAULT-TEC lettering.
"Good morning! I'm from Vault-Tec!" He said to raise his hat to say hello and then put it back on.
"Good morning." Returning the greeting, the name Vault-Tec caught his attention. "Vault-tec? Can you tell me who they are?"
"We care about you, sir! And we help secure your future. You know, Vault-Tec is the leading builder of modern underground nuclear shelters." The man remembered who they were. A company determined to save people from the "imminent" nuclear holocaust. "They are chambers, if you will, Luxury Rooms in which you can wait out the horrors of nuclear devastation. I cannot express how pleased I am to speak with you. I have been trying for days. This is a matter of the utmost urgency, if I assure". Now that I could see his face it was: orange hair, eyebrows, hazel eyes and white skin tanned by the sun leaving a light red color.
"For fear of the holocaust?" I ask bluntly while leaning against the wall.
"Yes, it's…inevitable. And it could happen sooner than you think, I don't know if you understand me" he said uncomfortably. "Well, I know you're a busy man, so I'm not going to take up too much of your time. Time is…mmm, a precious commodity" He said before taking a deep breath. "I have come to tell you that because of the service your family has provided to this country, you have been shortlisted to enter the local shelter. The one hundred and one shelter" He said to raise his hands and lower them to the sides so that the name was striking .
The man was flattered that they were chosen, but he had a question.
"But there's room for my whole family, right?" I ask hoping it was big enough
"Of course! Of course. Except for your robot, of course. In fact, your access has already been authorized. You just need to check some data" He didn't like that, he felt that Codsworths was part of the family. "We don't want any delays…in the unlikely event of…*ahem*…total atomic annihilation. It'll only be an instant."
"Okay, let's do it" The man said.
"Excellent!" He said to give him his board with the data sheet and give him a pen.
The man would put his home, family, and contact information next to his name: Nate, his wife Nora, and their son Nora. He would hand her the sheet along with the pen.
"Perfect! That... that's all" He checked that it was complete. "I'm going to take this to the shelter! Congratulations on preparing for the future!" He said to raise his hat and leave.
"Amm, thanks" He said to close her, he didn't see a nuclear holocaust as funny, his time in the army taught him that atomic energy is not a game and should be taken seriously.
"It's for peace of mind. And he deserves a bit of paperwork, isn't he?" Nora teased.
"For Shaun and for you, I would do anything," Nate said without thinking, his family was everything.
"Ha ha ha Good answer" He said after laughing and sitting down on the sofa to turn on the TV and watch the news.
"I have my moments" Returning the joke. I was going to sit next to her, but Codsworth will come back into the room.
"I've changed Shaun, but he adamantly refuses to calm down. I think he needs a dose of that paternal affection that he's so good at," he said to return to his previous task.
"Heh. You heard Codsworth. Go" Nate paying attention to him would go to his son's room. He saw him crying, he just breathed a sigh of relief and would scratch his belly, he would stop crying and laugh at the gesture.
"What do the most important men in my life do?" Nora asked, looking at them while she was leaning against the wall and then approaching the crib. "Turn the mobile a bit, he loves it" Paying attention to him, he would make the rockets move making the child have fun.
"How is my little one? Much better, hmm?" I ask friendly, I would turn to see Nate. "Hey, after breakfast we could go to the park for a bit. It looks like it's going to be nice."
"Sure, some fresh air wouldn't hurt me" He said to later see his son happy, that would make his heart happy.
"Sir? Ma'am? Should you guys come check this out?" Codsworth yelled to get his attention.
"Codsworth? What's up?" Nora asked worried. She would take her son in her hands.
Nate without thinking would go to the room where he would see the robot watching television, especially the news channel, the presenter was distressed.
"Followed by…yes, followed by flashes. Blinding flashes. Explosive sounds. We're…we're trying to confirm…"
"What? What did he say?" Nora said trying to understand what he was saying.
"It seems that we have lost connection with our studies…" He said reading the latest news.
"This is not good" Nate said knowing what he meant by flashes and explosions.
"Eh... We-we have, we have reports that... I repeat, we have reports that confirm that there have been nuclear explosions in New York and Pennsylvania... My God" He said to put his hand on his forehead in anguish and the signal was cut off and the worst what Nate feared came true, the nuclear alert sirens began to sound in the surroundings.
"Oh…god" Nora said scared. "I've got Shaun. Let's go!"
"We have to go to the Refuge… Right now!" I yell opening the door for her to come through. He saw Codsworth, it hurt him to leave him, but he had no choice, their time was running out.
"Take care Codsworth" He said to go out the door leaving the robot alone.
"And your family too, sir. Oh wow" He said looking out the window at the people running towards the shelter and a car trying to pass.
"Sanctuary Hills residents, if you are registered, come to the one hundred and eleven shelter immediately!".
A helicopter's horns blared as it flew up the hill. Several people were running towards the shelter, a tank would block the way to the Sanctuary Hills bridge.
Nate ran as fast as he could with his family. Nora was trying to calm Shaun who started crying at the sound of the alert. On the path leading to a wooden bridge he saw his neighbors with suitcases trying to reach it, but Mr. Burke would trip by falling and the suitcase would be opened.
"Stop that! Let's move on!" the woman yelled.
"Help me put it back in!" Nate hoped they were registered as well, but now he had to move on to the shelter.
They would go up the hill to see several people piled up trying to get in and a group of soldiers trying to hold them off along with the only one in power armor using a heavy machine gun. Nate together with Nora would move to the front watching the Vault-tec representative arguing with one of the soldiers.
"That's absurd. I AM from Vault-Tec!" I yell at the soldier.
"If it's not on the list, it doesn't get in!" Said the soldier standing firm.
"Mister!" The one in the power armor said pointing at him while turning the barrel of the weapon. People would freak out.
"Wow! Okay!" The Vault-Tec representative said raising his hands and would try to back away, but would see Nate. "They let you in? And not me? Someone will find out about this!"
"We need to get in! We're on the list" Nate said trying to support his family. The man quickly checked his data tablet.
"Boy…Grown man…Grown woman…Okay, go ahead" Letting them through as people yelled to let them through. "Good luck, and may God help us all."
"I swear we'll meet again!" The representative yelled as he tried to back away from the people.
"You two! Follow me quickly!" Said an officer wearing blue overalls and security gear.
"And what is going to happen to all those people who have been left out?" Nora asked as she followed him.
"We do everything we can… Don't stop!" He said leading them to a platform with several people in fear. "Hurry, get on the platform, in the center!"
Being on top of the metal plate they'd see in all directions if anything was heard, Nora saw Nate trying to see the mushroom cloud.
"Alright, that's it. Send them downstairs."
Nate tried to calm his wife down.
"We're almost there. Everything's going to be okay. I love you…both of you." Without thinking, I would hug them to calm them down and protect them from the blinding light that comes from detonating a nuclear explosion.
"We love you too" She said only for the world to have a blinding glow that did not last long and the nuclear cloud appeared in the distance.
"Oh God!" Said a terrified woman.
"GO! GO! SEND THEM DOWN NOW!" Said an officer forcing the console to activate the button causing the platform to go down.
"HOLD ON!" He said holding them firmly. Nate saw the mushroom knowing it was all over and then the shock wave hit. He held onto Nora with all his strength as the platform lowered and they took the impact. After reaching a certain distance the roof would close leaving them in the dark.
There was a few seconds of darkness until a white light appeared along with cold air and some metal bars that separated them from the entrance of the cave. Nora would look up to see the blue color and behind the grate the entrance to the vault.
"Finally. We've made it. We're good."
Nate looked up at the door to the shelter and how the gate rose. I would release them to see the yellow gear shaped entrance.
"Please, everyone get out of the elevator and go up the stairs in an orderly manner" Said an officer who was waiting for them outside the shelter and next to him a man in the same light blue jumpsuit with yellow edges and leather forearms.
"Don't worry! We are going to leave you all in your new home, the shelter one hundred and eleven! A better future... Underground!".
"Then we just have to..." one of them said.
"That's right, just take the stairs up."
With no other choice, Nate and Nora would go up the stairs, leaving others in shock at what had happened. When going up and entering the metal walkway that left them inside the vault with several people like him lining up towards a woman delivering the same monkey from the shelter.
Vault-Tec is here to help. All residents move forward in an orderly manner. Welcome home!
Said a robotic voice, as they passed the catwalks past a radiation meter, they would form in line. After about two minutes they were both handed their coveralls from the shelter, Nate saw that in the back there was a large number 101 on the back.
"Thank you, now what?" I ask while inspecting it.
"Follow the doctor. He'll show you the way" Said the woman handing another person the coverall from the shelter.
"Alright, you three… Follow me!" Said the doctor in a classic white coat with a shirt of the same color and a tie, but the laptop on his left arm caught his attention.
As they followed him, he would see a room with several capsules and people entering them.
"Oh, you're going to love this. It's one of our most modern facilities. Not that the others are bad, of course" The doctor said as he led them.
"How long do you think we'll be here?" Nora asked holding Shaun comforting him while he cried.
"Oh, we'll talk about all that in orientation. There are some medical details we need to attend to first." He said to take them to a bedroom with more capsules. Upon arrival, he would stop at the last capsules. "Here it is, go to the bathrooms that are behind to the right of the shelter, put on the shelter suit and enter the capsules.
Doing what he said, they went to the bathrooms to change, leaving their clothes in a basket. Nate looked in the mirror trying to see if this was real, he wet his face hoping it was a dream and unfortunately it wasn't. This would be his new life and he had to get used to it, what mattered was that his family was safe and that was done. I would come out of the bathroom to see Nora in her overalls trying to calm her Shaun down.
"Everything is going to be alright, see? Daddy's here. Honey, can you help me?" Nora said for him to see, he would take the baby in his arms and misery to calm him down, he would succeed.
"Who's my little one? I won't stray too far, I'll be around here" That would put him at ease.
"There's dad, see? He won't go very far" Nora said calmly.
"Everything in order? Enter the capsule!" Nate had to do it but not before kissing his wife goodbye.
"Don't worry, I'll go first" That would calm her down, Nate went to the capsule where he would enter feeling that it was cold.
"The capsule will decontaminate and depressurize you before you go further into the Refuge. Calm down" The doctor said to leave, he would see how Nora entered with Shaun and the capsules would close.
"It's time to start my new life" Nate said trying to stay calm, he would see Nora who would put her hand on the front window as if saying goodbye, he would do the same, I pray that everything goes well.

The capsule would get cold and it would be covered with ice, the only thing he saw before falling asleep was Nora being covered by ice crystals.
210 years later.
Switch to manual control. Cryogenic suspension aborted.
Nate felt a strange feeling of rejuvenation in his body and how his vision was blurry at first, but then he would see normally. Outside the capsule everything was dark. He would see how a person with protective clothing against toxic waste approached Nora's capsule.
"This is it. Here." Pointing at her, it was the voice of a woman. She would see how a man who did not wear the same clothes as her approached the capsule.
"Open it" The man said. The capsule would then be opened leaving Nora confused and Shaun crying.
"Cough! Is it done? Are we okay?" she asked coughing.
"Almost. Everything will be fine" The man said calming her down, the woman who accompanied him would try to take Sahun.
"Come here…Come here, baby…" She was going to take it, but Nora wouldn't allow it. She clung to Shaun as if her life depended on it.
Nate tried to hit the window trying to get his attention, seeing that it didn't work, he was looking for a way to open it.
"No, stop. No, it's my boy!" Struggling against the woman who was trying to take it from him, the man would pull out a gun and point it at Nora.
"Leave the child. I'm not going to repeat it to you again!" He said calmly, but showed that he was willing to do it the hard way.
"Shaun stays with me!" Nora said fighting, but she would be shot in the head causing her to drop the baby and the woman in the protective gear would take it. Nate would be frozen by what he saw, he couldn't do anything, he could only watch.
"Dammit! Get the kid out of here and let's go…" He said as he put the gun away. The woman would obey and leave, he went to where Nate was to see him, he would simply look at it seriously while he analyzed it. He was bald, with a mustache-connected beard; they weren't long, white skin, a big scar that crossed his left eye down and he wore a jacket with a metal shoulder pad. "At least we still have plan B" He said as he left.
Nate hit the window trying to break it to get to him but to no avail.
Cryo sequence restarted.
Nate just felt like he lost consciousness, he fought as best he could, but he was defeated and went back to sleep, the last thing he remembered was the man and the death of his wife Nora.
Before falling unconscious again he said. "I'm going to find you, and I'm going to kill you" And then he went back to sleep.
