The Multiverse is a concept of which we know frighteningly little...
But the little chunk of it we do know is best known as the Spider-Verse. While many have different descriptors of this piece of the multiverse, the best way to put is that it is a collection of universes connected by one person, one superhero:
Spider-Man.
Granted, not every variant of the hero is the same. Sometimes, it's a Spider-Woman. Occasionally, it's a Spider-Punk. Sometimes, it's even a Spider-Cat!
But across the multiverse, one thing remains constant: One person is given great power and becomes a symbol of hope in their universe, creating a great story in the process.
And we are about to watch one of these stories in action...
"Ridiculous! Utterly ridiculous!"
That was one Chloé Bourgeois. And her reaction can be explained.
You see, Chloé belongs to the class of one Miss Caline Bustier. And the class was lucky enough to be able to explore the newly built lab of Dr. Miles Warren. With genetic and mechanical experiments straight out of a comic book, most people would be nothing short of ecstatic.
Chloé was not like most people.
"Adrien, how would you be okay with this? What if a spider gets in your hair or something?" Chloé asked one of her lifelong best friends, Adrien Agreste, who looked like he was about to explode in joy.
"But it's something you would only find in comic books! It could be exactly like the lab where Peter Parker became Spider-Man!"
Chloé sighed and let her head sink into her hands. She already disliked non-Ladybug bugs, but spiders were a whole category of "nope" by themselves. And her friend was one of the superhero's biggest fanboys.
When they finally got there, Chloe started to SLIGHTLY understand why everyone was so hyped. The place in fact did look it came out of a sci-fi story. Large computers, high-tech machines-
Hiss
That sound broke Chloe out of her thoughts with a startled yelp. Hiding behind Adrien, she saw the main reason why she didn't want to go to this lab: spiders.
There were a few glass tanks full of them. And one was crawling on the glass particularly close to where Chloe was just standing.
Chloe sighed. Oh, how she hated spiders.
"Oh, I see some of you have met my pets!"
That was none other than the man of the hour. Dr. Miles Warren himself.
"Apologies, Ms. Bustier. I had to tend to urgent business and traffic was not on my side." He held his hand out to be shaken.
And got nothing.
"What's he doing?" A confused Chloe asked a confused Adrien, only getting a shrug as an answer to her question.
"Don't you guys remember?" Sabrina Raincomprix, Chloe's other best friend, spoke up. "He's from the U.S."
"Oh." Chloe and Adrien understood perfectly.
Dr. Warren, realizing, put his hand back to his side. "Erm- my apologies again. It has only been a complete week that I have been in Paris, and I am still getting used to some of its customs."
"We can tell." Chloe whispered to Sabrina, earning a giggle.
"So, who's ready for the tour?" Multiple students, including Adrien, responded to Dr. Warren's question with an enthusiastic cheer.
The tour of the lab was more interesting than Chloe would like to admit. Apparently, Dr. Warren's goal was to use the genetics of animals to help people who had problems related to their genetics. For example, using bat genes to cure deafness. But then they walked into another room...
And Chloe wanted to scream.
Arachnids, EVERYWHERE. Scorpions, mites, ticks...
And spiders. Oh, so many spiders.
It took all her willpower to not faint right there.
"And spiders. Out of all creatures roaming the earth, I always found them some of Mother Nature's magnum opuses. Fun fact, did any of you know-"
Chloe started to tune out the words of the scientist, because she was focused on something else. A spider, surprisingly. It was small, with a grayish body and yellow legs. Creepily, not long after Chloe noticed it, it NOTICED her. And started staring. Like it was curious.
Chloe turned away quickly. A staring contest with a spider. There goes any chance she's sleeping tonight.
"Dr. Warren, I have a question." asked one Alya Cesaire, prompting Chloe to roll her eyes.
"Fire away."
"What exactly do you plan to do with these spiders?" asked Alya. Which was a point Chloe and Sabrina could agree on.
At least the bats and the other animals had something humans could benefit from. What the hell could SPIDERS do?
"Good question, Ms. Cesaire. You see, my old comrade Richard Parker believed the venom of spiders could be used to do anything from cure diseases to counteract poisons across the globe! Unfortunately, he passed years ago, so I have taken it upon myself to finish his work. So, any other questions?"
Before anyone could ask any more questions, there was the sound of a loud crash coming from outside the room.
"What was that?" Multiple students asked. Miss Bustier, not wanting to risk any of her students, slightly opened the door, peeked her head out, and saw a not-so-welcome sight.
There were at least nine or ten masked men in the lab, grabbing technology. Although one didn't wear a mask, showing a young man in a yellow sweatshirt with brown hair and equally brown eyes.
"Alright, let's get this out of here. This stuff will pay a fortune on the black market. And if ANYONE damages anything, it's coming out of your pay. Ya hear me!?"
Tristan Boucher. Thought himself the best thief and criminal in Paris, though in reality he was a thug who routinely got his butt kicked and thrown in jail by Ladybug and Cat Noir. If the cops didn't do it first.
But now he was here. With armed men. And he looked scarier up close.
Miss Bustier quickly and quietly closed the door. "There are armed thieves. They're stealing Dr. Warren's technology."
Dr. Warren gasped. "But I have spent years on it all! This cannot stand!" He started to march out of the room.
"Dr. Warren, what exactly are you going to do?" One Marinette Dupain-Cheng asked.
"Simply give them an offer they can't refuse." Dr. Warren said while pulling out something with a button on the top. A trigger. With that, he walked out of the room.
"Miss Bustier, maybe we should sneak out while the thieves are preoccupied with Dr. Warren." Adrien suggested.
Chloe agreed. Armed thieves were scary. But spiders were scarier. Especially when they are staring directly at you. Which is exactly what one of the spiders was still doing.
Before anyone could give their own input on Adrien's idea, they heard Dr. Warren confronting the thieves.
"What exactly do you gentlemen did you are doing?" Dr. Warren asked, his politeness masking his fury.
"Robbing you, duh." Tristan said casually. "Look on the bright side doc, your tech will fund a very noble cause: making us rich!"
"Sorry," Dr. Warren said while raising his arms to show the trigger. "But that is one charity I will not donate to." He pressed the trigger, and multiple turrets sprung out the walls and ceiling, targeting the thieves.
"Shit!" Tristan yelled while taking cover. "If things get too desperate, grab the heavy artillery!"
Still in the safety of the arachnid exhibit, the class listened in suspense at what was unfolding outside. Mylene Harpele looked like she wanted to cry. In any other scenario, Chloe would've rolled her eyes at this. But now, who could blame her?
Thoop
Uh oh.
Before anyone had a chance to react, an explosion rocked the outside of one the walls, making the entire class fall to the floor and sending multiple spider cases falling to the floor, shattering them.
"Hey boss, I think I heard something from inside that room over there!" One of the thieves said.
"Then check it out!" Tristan shouted, clearly exasperated.
The thug opened the door to the room, revealing the class to the criminals. "Oh, found some stragglers."
With that, the class was dragged out the room to the restrained Dr. Warren and Tristan Boucher, who was currently reloading a grenade launcher while angrily muttering something. "Stupid turrets ruining my payday- oh, now who are these?"
"Found them hiding earlier, boss. Counted at least sixteen of them, not including the teacher." The thug said.
Tristan did a quick survey, then did a low chuckle to attempt (and fail) to hide his anger. "You said SIXTEEN, right?"
"Yeah?"
Tristan, frustrated beyond belief, grabbed the thug by the collar and brought him to his face. "THEN WHY DO I ONLY SEE FOURTEEN?!"
The class looked around, very confused at what Boucher said, and Chloe noticed something.
Adrien and Marinette were missing.
Marinette, she could understand. She has been a coward since they were young. But Adrien? Nope. No way. No way would he abandon his own best friend like that.
He was... calling for help. Yeah, calling for help! Probably Ladybug considering his infatuation with the heroine. Though she couldn't blame him.
"Hold on, boys! We may walk out of this richer than expected." Tristan said to his men, before crouching down to eye-level with Chloe, who was forced to sit on the floor. He grabbed the girl by the arm, dragging her away.
"Let me go!"
"The Bourgeois brat! Hahaha, jackpot! I wonder how much Mister Mayor would pay to for his precious little-"
Tristan didn't get the chance to finish his sentence before a loogie courtesy of Chloe became very acquainted with his face.
"I said. Let. Me. Go."
Tristan wiped the spit off his face with a gloved hand and, clearly at his breaking point with his rage, raised his other hand to slap Chloe...
But before it could come even close to the girl, his hand was restrained by what looked to be...a yoyo.
"This ends now, Boucher!"
That red and black spotted pattern, the eye mask, it was none other than the one, the only...
"LADYBUG!" Chloe cheered.
"Son of a-" Tristan tried to curse, but Ladybug pulled him into two of his own men before that could happen.
Getting his arm out the yoyo. Tristan pulled out a revolver and aimed it at the arthropod-themed superheroine. "I am seriously at my limit already, and I don't need a brat in spandex pissing me off even more!"
"What about two?" With that, a black blur sent Tristan crashing into two more of his men.
That black blur being none other than Cat Noir himself.
Tristan groaned. "Change of plans, boys! Whoever kills Kitty Litter, and the Bug Brat gets paid extra!" With those words, bullets started flying everywhere to kill the superheroes while Miss Bustier's and Dr. Warren fled the area.
"Ohmygod-" Chloe was, for lack of a better descriptor, scared out of her mind. Yes, Paris was subjected to supervillains on a regular basis, but that didn't make things like this any less scary!
Once they were certain they were somewhere safe, Chloe and Sabrina let go of breaths they didn't even know they were holding.
"First spiders, now thugs! Can this day get any worse?!" Chloe nearly screamed in frustration.
Apparently, it could!
Mere seconds after Chloe said that, she felt immense pain in her arm. It felt like she was stabbed with a sword that was frozen and then lit aflame. It was agonizing.
She quickly brushed her arm in an attempt to get rid of whatever was causing her pain. After a couple brushes, she saw a red bump from whatever caused her that pain. And then... she said it.
The same. Damned. Spider. That was staring at her earlier.
"That's it!" Angered beyond belief, Chloe took out all her current frustrations on the arachnid, stomping it until there was nothing left of it but a paste. "I have had it!"
"You and me both."
With the sound of a revolver clicking, Chloe turned to see a disheveled Tristan aiming his revolver at her.
"It was supposed to be a simple job. Break into lab, steal tech, sell tech, get paid. But nooooo, those stupid heroes had to show up and send everything to hell!" He stormed closer. "But at least I can get some solace knowing the girl who ruined my hair is fu-"
BONK
With a sound akin to a fallen coconut, Tristan was knocked out, falling to the floor. A smug Cat Noir standing behind him.
"You kiss your mother with that mouth?" He joked. Then he turned to an annoyed Chloe. "What do we say?"
"Thank you." Chloe said, clearly annoyed.
Once it was made clear that Tristan was the last of the criminals, the class walked back to the lab, which was covered in bullet holes and wrecked scientific equipment, and a sullen Dr. Warren.
"My research! My tech! This will take weeks to repair, if not months!" Dr. Warren yelled in anguish.
The class said nothing, and Chloe chuckled. They knew what was about to happen.
"Don't worry, good doctor! I got this!" Ladybug said.
One Lucky Charm later, and the lab was in perfect condition. Dr. Warren, ecstatic beyond belief, took Ladybug's hand and started shaking it so hard that she started shaking.
"Thank you oh so much!" The doctor said.
"No big deal, but...we gotta go!" And with that, the two superheroes disappeared, meaning that the tour could continue as normal.
...Meaning they were going back to the arachnid room.
Crap.
A minute after the thieves were hauled off by the police and the class had to go back to standing in a room full of the most disgusting creatures in existence, Adrien finally reappeared.
"Well, where were YOU when the thieves showed up?" Chloe asked while elbowing her friend.
"I-uh-well-" Adrien stammered.
"Hah! Just kidding. I know you went to ask for help. Should've been here to see the fight though. Ladybug, as always, was so cooo-" Chloe suddenly became dizzy, having to cling onto Adrien to stand.
"You okay?" Adrien asked.
"Yeah, yeah. No big deal." Chloe stood up and calmed down her friend. But the moment he was distracted, she lifted up her sleeve, seeing the red bump from the spider bite was still there. She looked to the tank that contained the spider that bit her earlier, and noticed it was missing that one spider.
It was odd, but Chloe shrugged it off.
It's just a spider. No big deal, right?
Nope. Never mind.
Big deal. VERY big deal.
At first, the spider bite symptoms were barely noteworthy. Just occasional dizziness.
But hours went by and now the symptoms have gotten worse.
She had a headache so bad she was convinced her skull cracked open; she was so dizzy she was stumbling across the sidewalk. And she was oh so slightly nauseous.
Not to mention this weird pain in her wrists.
She was so grateful when school ended. Now she could sleep away these insufferable spider bite symptoms.
When she got to the hotel, she even forgot to greet her father. She just wanted to sleep off this painful spider bite.
She finally got to her room. Finally, her bed.
She fell into her bed, somewhat content. Chloe was just gonna nap the spider-bite off...
BEEP BEEP BEEP
Crap.
That was an alarm clock.
In a panic, Chloe slapped her alarm clock. There was so much to do. Brush her hair, change into new clothes.
"Merde!" Chloe swore. She jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom to brush her hair.
Well, TRY to brush her hair.
It's pretty hard to actually brush your hair when you have AN ALARM CLOCK STUCK TO YOUR HAND.
"What the-" Chloe tried shaking her hand to get the clock off. Nothing. Pulling the clock off. It just got stuck on her other hand.
Being fed up, she grapped one of her brushes and started using it to pry it off her hand.
CRACK
Good news. It worked. The clock was no longer stuck to her hand.
Bad news. Her brush was now broken.
She wanted to scream. To cry. But school was starting soon and she did NOT want to be late. So she instead started hastily throwing off her old clothes and wearing new ones.
Walking past a mirror, she saw something that made her jaw drop.
Chloe before wasn't LANKY, more of a normal build for a girl her age.
Now she looked like she went to the gym every day. Abs and everything!
"Hmm, not a bad look actually." Chloe said.
She threw on her now-slightly-tighter clothes in a hurry, grabbed her backpack, and started running to the school.
Suprisely, it was way easier. No different than a light jog.
Could it be...
No. No no no. It is fictional. It is NOT REAL.
Once Chloe got to school, she immediately ran to the person she wanted to see.
"Oh, hi Chloe!" Sabrina greeted her friend.
"Sabrina, I need you to do me a favor. Look up the powers of Web-Boy or whatever." Chloe said.
"Do you mean Spider-Man?" Sabrina asked in confusion, before realizing she was slightly looking up to talk to Chloe. "And were you always this tall?"
"Sabrina, please." Sabrina's eyes widened. If Chloe of all people was saying please, she was serious.
"Okay." One quick search. "Uhhh, super-strength, sticking to things, enhanced stamina-"
Now Chloe was slightly worried. She used those powers this morning.
"And spider-sense."
Chloe let out a sigh of relief. "Phew. I was starting to get worri-"
Then, it felt like time slowed down for the girl. Without thinking, Chloe raised her hand and caught a ball she didn't even know was flying towards her.
"Woah Chloe, I didn't know you could catch!" Sabrina was surprised.
And so was Chloe. "I... can't."
After a few seconds, the girls realized exactly what this meant.
"Putain de merde, I'm like Spider-Man."
That was an INCREDIBLY frustrating day. A day full of pulling school papers off sticky fingers and pulling down the sleeves of her now-too-small jacket.
At this point, Chloe just wanted to go home and cool down, whatever that meant.
"Ugh, I wish I could learn how to bring things back from the dead, so that I could kill that spider again!"
Before she could continue ranting on her walk home, she felt IT again.
That weird tingling feeling she got when the ball was flying toward her.
But it felt...different.
Like it wanted her to FOLLOW it.
Against her better judgement, she obliged.
After following it for a little, she was brought to an alleyway that looked like it came straight from Batman's origin story.
"Hello?" Chloe heard and saw nothing. Was her "Spider-whatever" on the fritz?
A hand landed on Chloe's shoulder. "Hey-"
Then Chloe did something surprising. In one swift motion, she grabbed the arm of whoever that was and threw them halfway across the alley, crashing into a trash can.
Once that person landed, Chloe could get a good look at whoever that was.
It was some black teenage boy. Wearing a green jacket and brown shorts.
And - Gag – Jordans.
But the odd part was the red spider emblem on his shirt. And Chloe's spider-sense was somehow "pointing" towards this guy. If that even made sense.
So, Chloe asked the million-dollar-question.
"Who are you?"
The teen showed a nervous smile and shrugged.
"I'm Miles Morales."
Bonjour, everybody! This is my first fic, so if it's trash, that'll explain why.
