Chapter 10: Unlike Valentine

If the outskirts of Boston were dangerous, downtown Boston was worse. On every corner there were three things: looters, super mutants and ghouls. As they made their way through these they would make it to the park where the park street station that would take them to the shelter was located, but they noticed that in the park there were too many signs to stay away from the pond. As they entered the park they would hear people talking about Nick being kidnapped.

Nate and Six moved behind the walls so they wouldn't be seen. Nate pulled a fragmentation grenade from his belt to remove the safety catch and throw it into the station where it would explode killing two and stunning the others. Using military tactics Nate took care of those who fell to the ground from the blast while ED-E and Six fired on those behind cover. You would notice that these were not looters but gangsters by the use of formal suits with hats both human and ghoul.

"We're under attack!" They heard someone shout from below where they were.

They would go down, but Six stopped Nate from stepping on a weight scale. He pointed out to him that there was a makeshift mine attached to the wall, most likely wired. Six reached over and deactivated it. "Like a mine."

"Yes, but crude and homemade."

As they were in the station they saw around a corner the gangsters in positions waiting for them to come down. Nate saw ED-E and nodded. They would both come out of hiding as they went their separate ways, Six stayed behind to use the med stick on anyone who came near Nate shot two without locking sights while ED-E flew in using his laser on anyone who came near him. Six switched to his sequoia ranger to mow down a group of three. They had taken out seven in total. After taking what ammunition they could use they would head down the railroad tracks until they came to a collapsed area where there used to be a construction zone where there were three gangsters that they quickly eliminated by clearing the area.

"Nate pointed to the large door of the shelter with the number 114 on it. Nate used the PipBoy cable to activate the manual mode to gain access by pressing the button on the panel.

As the metal door swung open with a loud bang. Nate and Six loaded their weapons to enter.

"Who the fuck opened the door?" a gangster asked as he approached the entrance only to be shot in the head by Six.

"John!" another shouted drawing his machine gun, but ED-E was quicker to finish him off.

They would enter the shelter to turn left and enter a room and open a door to go down the stairs. When they reached the bottom and turned down a tunnel Nate took out two gangsters and moved on. They would enter a construction zone where Six using his medicine stick took out three and ED-E took out two who ran at them with bats.

"Beep, bop, beep" (This way).

Passing over the footbridge they would enter the shelter again to go down through a hatch to go safely down to the bottom to enter through a door. When they got there they saw that they were in the atrium where up to the top was the shelter office where a gangster was taunting someone inside.

They crept up to the office where Nate finished him off with a shot from his gun.

Six approached the terminal to try to unlock it.

"Hey you. I don't know who they are, but we have three minutes before they realize the big guy isn't coming back. Open the door" Nate saw through the office window a man in investigator's clothes but because of the darkness he couldn't see anything.

Nate ransacked the body to find a password to the terminal. "Here." Giving it to Six who nodded and unlocked the terminal.

As the door opened the three of them would go inside but would stop at the sight of the famous Nick Valentine. He wasn't human. That is, he was not a ghoul or a supermutant, but a somewhat broken humanoid robot with yellow pupils. "Oh, my knights in shining armour. The question is...Why come all this way and put your lives on the line for a private detective?" He said as he lit a cigarette and smoked.

"My son, Shaun. He's missing. He's been kidnapped, but I don't know who took him where," Nate said.

"A missing kid, huh? I'm your man, though this isn't the right place."

"What are you?" asked Nate.

"First time you've seen a synth, huh?" he asked sarcastically.

"You could say yes, I'm Nate smith and I've been frozen before the war and this is Six and Ed-e" Six tipped his hat.

"A man out of time? I'm familiar with that. We'd better leave before they surround us."

"Beep, bop, beep" (Now I'm intrigued on how to get a body like that, but meh I'm good like that."

"Better that, than being a talking ball" Nick replied to ED-E.

"Beep, bop, beep!" (Oh by Robo-God finally someone else understands me!) Six Ser laughed at that.

As they went down to the courtyard they hid behind a wall because three gangsters came in to investigate who were knocked down by a grenade from Nate.

"In a beastly way, eh? Well, it does the job. Sorry for whoever has to clean up afterwards" As they passed through the showers and came to a door they tried to open it but it was locked. "Let me see if I can open it."

After two minutes Nick would open it. Climbing up they made their way through several hordes of gangsters. On the way they discovered Nick's motive, it was to look for a girl named Darla who was kidnapped from her home by this Skinny Malone.

"Who... built this shelter? A fitness trainer!? He said as they walked up the stairs.

"That's what I thought," Nick said as they went upstairs. "Skinny Malone and his boys are waiting for us, somewhere. The name is ironic, but don't be fooled it's dangerous."

As they reached the top they could hear footsteps behind the door. "There's a lot of movement on the other side. Be prepared for anything.

When it opened there were two gangasters, a man in a black suit and a woman with a baseball bat.

"Nicky? What are you doing? You break into my house. You shoot my kids. Do you have any idea how much this is going to cost me?" shouted the slightly overweight man in the black suit.

"I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for your little friend the messy one, Slim. You should tell her to write home more often," Nick replied.

The woman would scoff. "Oh...Poor Valentine. Are you ashamed that a girl beat you up? I'll run home to Daddy, won't I?

"You should have moved on, Nicky. This ain't the old neighborhood. In this Refuge I'm the king, you hear me? And I'm not gonna let a dweller, a cowboy, and a metal ball shut us down while we're on the move!"

The impatient woman would look at him annoyed. "I told you we should have killed him, but you had to get sentimental! All that crap about 'the good old days.

"Darla, I'll take care of this! Skinny Malone's always got it under control!"

"Oh, yeah? Then what are these idiots doing here, huh? Valentine must have brought them here to finish us all off!"

Six approached him. "Malone, there's no need for this, you can let us go and don't interfere with your business."

"I'm sorry, but you know too much. Goodbye" He pointed, but Six was quicker as he used his revolver to rip the gangsters' guns away; including Darla's.

Six looked at them with a cold stare as he loaded his revolver. "I said, we leave and we don't interfere. Understood Malone?"

Malone eyed him angrily, but it was only enough to see the group's guns and the hardened stares of those who rescued Nick. "You have ten seconds. One..."

"Let's get out of here" Nick said as they walked away while Malone counted.

Exiting the shelter and going through a control room they would climb up a ladder to the surface.

He said as he watched the sky getting dark "I never thought I'd be glad to see the sky. Now the million-dollar question: How did they know where to find me? Few knew my whereabouts."

"Your secretary, Ellie. She sent us," Nate said.

Nick was amazed. "Really? I should give you a raise. You mentioned something about your son, Shaun, and his disappearance. Let's get to my office before nightfall to clear up your case."

"Let's not waste any time," Nate said to be followed. But he remembered alfo. "What do you mean, you're familiar with men out of time?"

"I'd rather not talk about that for the moment, until we're safe," Nick said seriously, watching the streets.

They continued on their way in silence and making sure there were no attacks.

I decided to add Intimidation in this part, we are getting closer to the confrontation, wait for the moment. See you later :)
