AN APPLE A DAY – Chapter 2: Blurred Senses

If time was merely a concept, then he did not have the slightest idea of how long they have been gazing at each other.

He did not know the true meaning of being lost until he stared into those deep and immaculate amber orbs of hers. The same familiar windows that bore the very essence of his being from years ago.

Never has he felt all his seven human senses consecutively robbed from him faster than any stimulus could.

Auditory and gustatory were the first ones to go. The final signals which his brain received corresponding to those two senses occurred when all the sounds and noises died down from his surroundings, and when he recognized the familiar salty-sour taste as he gulped down a relative amount of saliva down his throat.

His olfactory sense was the next to dull as the last thing he remembered was taking a whiff of her fragrant hair when he stood closely to her. Her elegant blonde tresses smelled of English pears and freesias.

Tactile sense slowly ebbed away together with his vestibular and proprioception as he struggled to maintain his upright position. He knew at the back of his mind that he was still holding her attacker's wrist, preventing his imminent display of violence; but he was slowly becoming unaware of the crushing force that he was exerting on the mentioned limb to deter her away from harm.

Lastly, his vision gradually became clouded as the only thing that mattered was the image of her standing in front of him, her face equally revealing shock, and her eyes reflecting all kinds of emotions.

As much of a cliché as it was, time stood still for him and for her.

He didn't even recall how he got there. All he knew was that he was on his way to the staff cafeteria to grab lunch with his friends. Coincidentally, the route they took towards the dining hall required them to pass by the corridor that connects to the emergency department.

That's when he heard the commotion.

That's when he saw her.

That's when he completely ignored his friends' chatter as he absent-mindedly ran towards the dangerous scenario involving her.

After what seemed like an eternity, the security personnel strategically swooped into the scene. He was brought back to his senses when he felt their repeated firm nudges onto his arm, instructing him to cease contact with the intruder. He took another concerned glance towards the blonde before he decided to abruptly let go of his grip. This caused the aggressor to stumble back and faint on the spot. The other gang members exclaimed their leader's name in unison.

The security team that consisted of nine members escorted the group of assailants outside to interrogate them and their injured leader was placed on a stretcher for immediate medical evaluation.

The blonde exhaled a deep sigh and turned her heel to walk the opposite direction, but he stopped her just in time as he grabbed her wrist.

"Wait! Are you alri—"

"Of course," she replied coldly, not daring to look into his eyes.

"Anna, I just—"

"I am perfectly fine. I didn't even need your help," she cut through his inquiry the second time as she quickly pulled her arm away from his grasp.

And as if on cue, the head or Paediatrics and Emergency, Doctor Faust, approached them from behind. "My, my! What a scene!" he exclaimed as he looked at the two individuals with an obvious aura of awkwardness surrounding them. In his defence, he was pertaining to the group of trespassers, but Yoh and Anna were certainly making their own little scene. So much amusement in tow, he carefully looked at the brunette then at the female blonde, then he decided to intervene.

"Anna, why don't you take your break? I'll go see you afterwards," the German doctor encouraged.

The woman elicited a small bow towards her senior then walked away.

Yoh's eyes followed her retreating figure until she was gone.

It took him a few seconds before he regained composure and averted his gaze towards Faust. Yoh plastered a confused look, opened his mouth in an attempt to speak, but was again cut-off for the nth time that afternoon.

"I know. I have been meaning to tell you," said the department head with an apologetic smile.

. . .

"Yoh! YOH!"

He was pulled back to the present as he heard one of his companions yelling his name like there's no tomorrow. An annoying headache was starting to creep on him, and he tried to blink a couple of times to clear his vision.

"What's the matter with you? Are you having a flu?" asked the Horohoro, about to touch his forehead. "Actually, which reminds me! When are we scheduled for our annual flu shots?" the blue-haired guy continued with his musings.

Ren slapped Horo's hand away before it even made contact, "The only thing this idiot's having is a painful daydream," he looked at Yoh, "do we need to run some tests on you? It would be interesting to see your brain under an MRI right now."

No one dared to react with his joke.

"Sigh, Yoh. Sorry I didn't tell you earlier. I was meaning to but then I suddenly got busy, and well, you know," Yoh did not even notice that Manta has now caught-up with them in the cafeteria. His friend's face full of guilt.

That was interesting. There are now two people who wanted to tell him about Anna being within the same 5-kilometre radius vicinity as him, but somehow the news did not reach its destination and now he had to suffer the shock of meeting her again from such a crazy situation.

He grinned at his friend reassuringly, "It's okay, Manta."

"Although I might admit, it is still quite a shock that she's back," the blue-haired on started, "I mean, given her history with this place and the… the people," he trailed off regretfully after realising what he just said.

All three men glanced towards Yoh who was calmly sipping his coffee. They waited for more descriptive reactions yet nothing else came except for a serene smile.

"Well," Yoh muttered getting up from his seat, "it was a pleasure to catch-up with you, gentlemen, but I gotta run. My folks insisted on meeting-up after the staff conference. Yoh know how grandma doesn't like being kept waiting," he stated truthfully with a shudder.

His friends just stared at him blankly as he motioned to leave.

"What do you mean 'catch-up'? You barely even talked," Ren countered.

"Yeah! You owe us at least one boys' night. Next time we do it at Ren's," HoroHoro added, with malicious eyes and smirk.

"And what makes you think you are welcome at my place you moron?"

"Huh? I thought the bro-code says I can invite myself to your place at any time?"

"Bro-code my ass!"

"Come on, Ren, you used to be sweeter than that!"

"Piss off, sweet was never in my vocabulary!"

"How 'bout we do it in mine?" the bickering men looked at Yoh simultaneously. Manta let out sigh of relief.

Everyone showed a satisfied smile.

"At your bachelor's pad, indeed."

. . . . . . . . . . .

Anna was walking in unbelievable hurried strides.

Her heels sounded continuously as she strode past the long and winding white corridors of the hospital. The doctor's gown she was previously wearing, now dangling on her arm as she felt an indescribable increase in heat.

She endured a few more steps, turned left and right at a few corners, earning a few lustful stares from several male visitors and employees alike whom she gladly ignored like they did not existed. She was ready to throw her stethoscope against one bloke who dared to catcall her, until she finally reached her destination. She pushed a glass door open, and slowly stepped outside, allowing the gentle breeze to brush against her gorgeous face.

The invigorating scent of garden flowers combined with freshly cut grass filled her senses as she inhaled a significant amount of air into her lungs while she closed her eyes to filter the blinding brightness of the outdoors.

Whether she needed mind clarity, venting out about her day or just plainly hanging out and enjoying nature, it was the place that always appeased her sanity. She noticed how much the hospital's garden has improved compared to the past. It was now a vast field with numerous flower beds and aesthetically landscaped greens scattered along the walk paths and pavements. There's even a couple of Koi ponds and fountains which never fail to entertain anyone who visits spot.

Her mind travelled back to the troubling events in the emergency department earlier transpired in a whirlwind. It worked her up so much that she did not even notice she was clutching her chest in an attempt to calm her breathing and she even had to lean on one of the concrete foundations of the buildings.

She did not mind the group of thugs who threatened her safety, no. She was even quite glad that she could release her anger on them due to the rude patient she previously had prior to the incident. She was so close to projecting her pent-up frustrations when out of the blue, he appeared.

She knew the sole reason why her heart was beating at almost dangerous levels was him.

After several years, she felt the whole equilibrium of her well-being, which she worked so hard to rebuild, was overthrown by a mere 3-minute encounter with him.

She heaved another sigh.

Anna contemplated as to why she was so affected with his presence when she practically prepared for it almost half of her life. She knew it was bound to happen in the future, but she did not anticipate to see him so soon after forming her resolve to come back to Izumo.

So why is she faltering now?

She smiled.

"Idiot. You wanted this. Stop being weak," there was nobody else in the area, so she was pretty sure she was reprimanding herself.

"Good grief. Talking to ourselves now, aren't we?" Anna spun around to see a tall and attractive blonde male. He was wearing a long-sleeved navy polo with slightly unbuttoned top, tucked in a pair of light grey slacks. He had a pair of black casual loafers on, and his lab coat was stylishly being blown by the gentle wind. There was an enchanting smile plastered on his face as he casually walked towards her. Heck, he did not look like he was in his 40's and she was quite convinced that it was almost illegal for a married man to walk around like that.

"Don't you have patients to attend? I'm sure that rude old lady in the ED would love to bask in your soothing presence," Anna started with sarcasm.

Faust chuckled at her gesture as he leaned at the same concrete pillar a couple of metres away from her. He knew her too well to understand that this was just her way of a sweet greeting.

"You haven't changed at all, love," he mused.

Silence.

"In all honesty, Anna, I was shocked to learn from my wife that you were coming back," he paused to wait for a reply but continued when none came. "I thought you were having the time of your life and almost built your own empire in Tokyo," he eyed her curiously with an adoring look, "so what gives?"

Anna's expression softened when she witnessed the look he was giving her. His aura seemed so calm and reassuring but there was also a hint of worry etched in his face; the kind of fatherly energy that she missed all along.

"I was here for a week already and you came to see me just now?"

"I was in a medical mission at Nagano. You did not answer my question, Anna."

Her lips curved into a slight smile as she shifted her eyes to cast her gaze at the man before her.

"Who knows? Maybe I got bored and missed my overly-protective pseudo-dad?"

Faust wondered at how she quickly regained her composure but he smiled softly, nonetheless.

"I just wanted to make sure you're okay."

"See…" her reserved smile grew wider, then she teased, "what did I tell you?"

The senior doctor grinned and shook his head in amusement but the moment was cut short by the sound of his mobile phone ringing.

Faust reached for his mobile in the inner pocket of his lab coat and brought it to his right ear. "Yes?"

A woman's voice echoed from the phone's speaker.

"Yes, she's here with me. That quick? Ah, yes, yes, alright. We'll be there," and with that, he tapped the mobile screen to end the call and put it back in his coat pocket.

He looked at Anna and opted to taunt her back, "See? What did I tell you?"

. . . . . . . . . . .

"There you are!" Yoh was greeted by his mother almost instantly after he opened the dark blackwood double doors to the chairman's suite.

To say the space was huge was an understatement. It was situated at the topmost floor of the 3rd tower, within the 110-acre hospital complex. The penthouse-style space had high ceilings, tall glass panels that surrounded half of the room, and had a minimalist-contemporary interior design. It boasted a magnificent view of Shimane prefecture including both the central business district and the luscious mountains and greeneries. There was even an infinity pool and a bar by the sophisticated veranda.

Yoh didn't even get the chance to reply when the woman stood-up, marched, and pulled him into a warm mother-son hug.

"Missed you, too, mom," he smirked adorably. Now that he has acquired a significant change in his height, he towered over his mother which made it easier to plant a quick adoring kiss on the top of her head. His left arm protectively went around her shoulders in an embrace. His right hand clutched a few bags of presents as a form of peace-offering.

He really did miss his mother and he noticed how much she has changed all those years. Her beautiful face now carried a few fine lines that were barely noticeable to the naked eye despite her light make-up. She was dressed in a matching light grey blazer and knee-length pencil cut skirt. Her cream top had a big black bow that rested on her neckline, and her nude Louboutin heels complimented the overall look. Keiko definitely looked years younger than her age. He knew where he got the pleasing side of his own genes from.

Yoh mentally counted the years that has gone by. He tried to recall the rare occasions he spent with his family which he could precisely count in one hand. They a very prestigious clan in Japan who dominated the medical, industrial, and even political industry. But everybody knows prestige always comes with a price tag and never having enough time to spend with loved ones is one those.

"Goodness me, what took you so long? For a second, I thought you were going to ignore our invitation again. How was your flight? You should've told us your travel itinerary so we could've arranged one of the private jets," Keiko commented with a sigh as she touched her son's cheek.

He chuckled at his mother's adorable display of affection. "Mom, that wasn't necessary, believe me. And no, no, it's just that I got lost from the main building on my way here, is all," he looked around the room further. "You guys sure splurged on the restorations, didn't you? This new wing of the complex is totally foreign to me," he continued when his mom did not look convinced.

"You would notice the difference if only you came to visit more often," interrupted a raspy voice within the room.

He moved his line of sight towards the seated figure in the pristine white leather sofa.

"Obaa-san!" he took a few strides to give his grandmother a peck on the cheek when he felt the wrath of her cane came in contact with his right hip.

"Oww! What was that for!?"

"You dare ask me after avoiding us for so long!?" said Kino, who was wrapped in a floral, navy traditional Kimono. She raised her cane once more to threaten Yoh with another strike.

"Whoah! Whoah! Grandma, come on! I'm 29 now. Don't you think hitting me with your cane kinda sets us back to when I was 10?" he pouted while trying to shield himself from his grandma's fury.

"I would still shamelessly strike you even if I had my great-grandchild within this room!"

The mention of the word, 'grandchild', made his mother's eyes sparkle. "Speaking of grandchildren, Yoh, hun, don't you think—"

"Ojii-san!" the adolescent male exclaimed pretending not to hear his mother's impending comments about starting a family. He nervously strolled across the living room to approach the old man who just entered the living room in a wheelchair, assisted by a nurse. He was also wearing a navy kimono with black haori around his back. The nurse bowed politely and left the suite.

Yoh stood in front of his grandfather to give him a slow and respectful bow, then he straightened up as he saw Yohmei gently wave his hand in acknowledgement. By this time, he also noticed his father, Mikihisa, entered the room. He was dressed in a business suit with a lab gown over him. They looked at each other for a few seconds, then Yoh gave him a small head bow to politely recognise his presence.

No more words were spoken between the father and the son.

Yohmei cleared his throat, "I believe you haven't answered your mother's question, Yoh."

"What question?" he rolled his eyes, feigning innocence.

"You know, for a Paediatric doctor, you seem quite allergic to the idea of kids," his grandmother chided.

Yoh groaned and raised both his palms to cover his eyes.

"Ugh, and here I was thinking you were all going to congratulate me personally for getting my surgeon status, not knowing I just walked into a hotseat trap," he muttered almost to himself.

Mikihisa approached his son and put a hand on his shoulder, "We're just thinking about the family's future, son," he paused when Yoh did not reply, "and yours, too."

"I am perfectly capable of taking care of my future, thank you very much…" he shrugged and slight shook his shoulders to pry off his father's hand. "Actually, I am more interested in the status of grandpa's health. Come on, ojii-san, tell me we can still vacation to Hawaii to look for a girlfriend," he winked towards his grandmother, when he saw her raise an eyebrow, "for me, grandma, not for him," he cleared out nervously.

Keiko's expression went from curious to incredulous, "But you do have a—"

"Well, we can catch-up more if you'd join us for dinner later. We will need to discuss about the job offer I have for you, sooner or later." Yohmei suggested, not letting his daughter complete her words.

"Ah, yes, that's right, come join us tonight! Also, have you heard from your brother?" asked Keiko after recovering.

Silence.

"Yoh—"

"No, I haven't," he replied curtly, his mood suddenly became dismal.

The other occupants of the room watched the abrupt change in his moods for a few more seconds before he recovered.

"Anyway, I'm afraid I can't join you tonight. Dr. Faust wanted to personally introduce me to the whole Paediatrics department, and I needed to finalise some documents with human resources prior to my official commencement on the floor," he explained with a hint of indifference, a noticeable change in his carefree tone.

"Maybe you should hire a secretary soon?"

"There is no need for that, mother."

In truth, he always loved doing things his own way because of his free-spirited nature. So, hiring extra help really wasn't his thing. His family should have known that by now.

He straightened up and went towards the back of his grandfather's wheelchair to grab the handles.

"Come on, I'll escort you all out," he then flashed his relaxed smile as he wheeled Yohmei towards the exit, the others followed them.

Although he tried to mask it, Keiko noticed her son's apathy right at the mention of his brother. She could only let out a sigh.

They reached the foyer connecting to the private elevator which they all boarded. Upon seeing the doors open one level lower than the suite, Yoh observed some security personnel clad in black suits with earpiece lapels on one ear. The members of the protection squad all bowed in unison towards him and his family members, before they boarded inside.

Yoh gave Keiko a gentle peck on her cheek to say farewell before he stepped out of the elevator.

"Promise me you'll join us next time? At least go to the gala," she whispered.

"Gala? How come I didn't—"

"Yoh!" her mother was now glaring at him with a murderous look.

"'Okay, okay, I promise," he sweat dropped but plastered a sincere smile.

Why are all the women in his life this scary?

The youngest Asakura then waved the rest of his family members goodbye. He watched the elevator doors close before he turned his heel towards his next destination.

Lost in thought, he strolled along the pristine hallways. He was on the second topmost floor of the building, and he knew it was the administration floor but since he wasn't familiar with the surroundings yet, his next mission was to find the HR department.

Aimless wandering was not something new to him and he kind of admitted that it was fun exploring the hospital's new wing. Being in there gave him mixed feelings of nostalgia and adventure. The kind of cheap thrills he always enjoyed.

He knew the medical foundation's every corner and angle. How can he not? He practically lived there his whole life. However, the newly built third tower extension was something new to him. Restoration's construction has just completed nine months ago, and the new wing has not been fully operational for more than half a year.

As the brunette meandered further, he walked past a few familiar faces who greeted him courteously, and some females whom he swore he had never encountered in his life but acted as if they knew every bit of him anyway. He shook his head with a playful smirk and continued his journey until he caught a glimpse of a certain angelic blonde crossing the corridors in front of him. She was following Dr. Faust, and both were moving towards the left-hand side corner of the hall.

Piquing his interest, he followed them from a safe distance.

The two blondes reached the room at the end of the stylishly decorated foyer, and it was then when he saw a familiar green-haired woman opening the door. She welcomed the two inside.

His eyes widened in realisation.

Yoh has found his destination, but now he had a different mission because surely, seeing Jun invite Anna into her office after a violent commotion at the ED was not exactly a good sign.

. . . . . . . . . . .

She welcomed them with such a lovely smile.

Tao Jun has always been an exceptional beauty with a delightful personality as known by her clients and colleagues alike. She was appointed as head of human resources for the last 4 years. Although yes, she was the daughter of a distinguished board member, Dr. Tao En, everybody just downright agreed that no one else held the position better than her.

Her hair was tied in a neat high bun, and she sported chic beige blazer and high waisted pants co-ords. Her black Chinese-collared shirt was buttoned and tucked-in neatly in, accentuating her ample bosom, and her sexy black, red-soled pumps just finished the classic deadly style.

"Please, feel free to take a seat," she welcomed Faust and Anna as she gestured towards the lavish armchairs situated at the front of her desk.

Anna gracefully sat on one of the chairs and Faust grabbed the other.

"Looking good, Jun," complimented the male doctor.

"I can always say the same for you, Dr. Faust."

Anna crossed her legs as she snorted.

"Jun, it's nice to see you again, believe me, but I'm sure we are not here for pleasantries. So, if you don't mind, why don't we just get down right to it? I have patients to attend to," the blonde started in a sweet and feisty tone.

Faust looked at Anna frustratingly. If he could just mutter a few well-known curses right now, he would have done so. He was trying to lighten the mood in hopes of lessening her sentence by making small talk and this woman was ruining the vibes by being painstakingly cocky and all.

This made the HR head cast her sweet look at the female doctor with such amusement. She has always admired her feisty and cunning persona. Truly, her unmistakably attractive physical features paired with her unique character was enough to be put on a pedestal by the men, and women around her.

"Dear Anna-chan, you have no idea how I missed you," Jun beamed a sincere smile then continued, "It's true that your transcript says a lot about your exceptional knowledge and skills in the medical field, and I believe that is why you got such a strong recommendation from a VIP within the board, but my, my," she paused to look at Anna intently, "barely a week has passed since you started the with us, and already in trouble?"

Anna raised her eyebrow at Jun's presentation of a light-hearted reprimand. She opened her mouth, ready to respond—

"It was self-defence," a familiar voice interrupted.

Three of the room occupants jumped slightly, before charging their gazes against the newcomer who has just entered the office. He carried an authentic air of self-confidence which was not very difficult to notice due to his manly stance.

"Dr. Asakura, what a nice surprise! However, I believe you are well-mannered enough to know that barging into my office like this is not—"

"It was self-defence, Jun." Yoh stated with a serious face as he sat comfortably on another lounge chair nearby, crossing his legs in a distinguished manner.

The green-haired woman just stared at him with much curiosity.

"You can ask me about the details. I can help you write that incident report if you want," the brunette continued with his attractive smirk.

"And why should I do that?"

"Well, consider me as her support person," he made it sound as the absolute fact while he casually pointed his thumb towards the doctor in question.

"No, you are not," Anna retorted disapprovingly towards Yoh. "He is not," she huffed towards Jun.

"Yes, I am." Yoh countered looking at Anna, acting hurt. "I really am!" He pouted as he turned to Jun.

"You really have a knack for meddling with someone else's business, haven't you?"

"No matter how you try to deny it, Anna, I was also there at the time of the incident. Stop trying to take all the hero credit for yourself." He was partly provoking her.

"I beg your pardon!"

Yep, she was clearly annoyed. He swore, if her looks could kill, he would've been stabbed by multiple daggers which could be flying out of her murderous aura by now.

At this point, Jun and Faust were literally just flipping their heads back and forth to whoever was talking just to keep up with the pair's endless tirades against each other in front of them.

Since the furious blonde did not hiss anything back after their heated staring contest, Yoh sighed and decided to follow-up his claims.

"As I was saying," he stressed every word, as he quickly glanced at Anna from the corner of his eyes.

"I'm sure you are all well aware that assault towards emergency responders is a criminal offence. This covers police officers, paramedics and in this case, healthcare workers in the emergency department," Yoh stated, now seeing the interest from the other occupants of the room.

"An assailant charged with this felony can be fined for more than 200,000yen and sentenced with jail time for multiple years depending on the severity," he paused to look at Jun with a serious expression, "Anna was intimidated by nine, full-grown, adult men, one nearly assaulted her sexually by trying to kiss her, and almost turned it into to a battery case by attempting to hit her with a brass knuckle. Anna slapped the offender as a form of self-defence, and had I not come to intervene," he looked away as if stating the truth will hurt him the most, "she may well be one of our patients needing surgery by now."

There was an uncomfortable silence afterwards.

"Is this true?" Jun asked as she recovered from the revelations.

Anna nodded quietly.

"Very well then," the head of HR clasped her hands together and rested them on the table before her. "Thank you, miss, and gentlemen, for your time and cooperation today."

The blonde lady gave her an inquisitive look.

That's it? That easy?

The brunette mustered a satisfied smile and leaned back confidently in his armchair.

The other male sighed in relief, "Ara! It's great that this has come to conclusion now. I must admit, it was such the drama," he stressed out, looking intently at Anna, "but I am glad it has all been cleared out." Faust rejoiced while standing up, holding his hand out to the green-haired woman to perform a handshake.

Jun took Faust's hand with a sweet, warm smile and accompanied him towards the reception whilst starting a conversation about recent events within the board, leaving the other two still in their seats.

A minute has passed and neither one of them spoke.

"Don't expect me to thank you." Anna broke the silence.

"I don't need your thanks. I just did what I felt was right," Yoh shrugged.

Anna stared at Yoh with narrowed eyes before deciding to get up and leave, but her movements were halted abruptly when the male doctor grabbed her arm to pull her back slightly.

"I'm not the same as before, Anna," he declared then continued with a deep voice when she did not answer, "I'm not the same hopeless boy you played all those years ago."

A few seconds flew in complete sound mute.

It took a moment before his words clicked into Anna's mind, and she snorted in purpose then rolled her eyes to denote the deepest form of sarcasm she could. She did not yank her arm that remained clasped in his hand but turned her head to look at him with a sweet yet alluring countenance instead.

Yoh flinched at her unexpected move but did not let her go. His cheeks even turned a noticeable shade of red and eyes widened like donuts when Anna suddenly leaned towards him on his seat, one of her knees dropped forcefully in between his thighs, missing his crotch by an inch. His breath hitched within his throat as her intoxicating scent filled his senses once again due to their undeniable proximity.

Anna fostered her advances when she placed her hands on both arms of the lounge Yoh was sitting on, trapping his body in the process. She lowered her head until her mouth was next to his left ear, hot breath tickling the hairs on his skin, then wickedly whispered something that triggered a surge of electricity through his spine, "And I'm still that boss bitch you took for granted."

The quick turn of events left the young male doctor petrified in his seat. He did not even notice when Anna withdrew her body and left. The sound of her heels ebbing away from the distance.

Yoh exhaled the breath he did not know he was holding then blinked a few times before craning his head towards the exit in hopes of catching a glimpse of the retreating woman.

He seemed to have forgotten about the paperworks he needed to sort out with Jun.

. . . . . . . . . . .
