Dr. Snow ran right out of his office to see what was wrong, "Goodness gracious, Felix King! What happened?!" as he said this he led Felix to the examining table.

As Felix gently put Izzy's limp body down on the table while still pressing his handkerchief to Izzy's head he said, "I told Izzy about the conscription. All of a sudden she became hysterical and started running. I tried chasing after her, but I have never seen her run so fast. She must have been in a daze because she ran right off one of the cliffs. I jumped in right after her but she was unconscious. She must have hit her head on one of the rocks."

Felix was frantic. How could he let something like this happen? He felt as if this was all his fault, and he would never be able to forgive himself if Izzy had permanent damage.

While Dr. Snow was examining the gash on Izzy's head he couldn't help but notice how exhausted Felix was. He was sure that Felix himself didn't notice it; that boy jumped right off a cliff, swam to a sandbar, ran at least over a mile to get to his office, and all the while he was carrying a girl in his arms. Dr. Snow wanted to tell Felix to sit down, but he knew that it would be no use. Anyone who had the willpower to do everything that Felix King just did without even knowing how exhausted he was wouldn't dream of sitting down. So, he just allowed him to stay in his office while he was examining Izzy's head.

Felix felt so guilty as he watched Dr. Snow clean Izzy's terrible gash which he later had to stitch up because of how bad the cut was. Then he watched him check the rest of her body for any broken bones; she had a broken arm. Felix was holding back tears as he watched all of this; how could he let this happen? Then he realized that Clive and Muriel had to know what had happened, "Dr. Snow, I just realized that I should go over to the Pettibone's house, I'll be right back."

Felix wasted no time and barged right into the house and went straight into the kitchen where he saw Clive and Muriel, "Mr. and Mrs. Pettibone, you have to come right away. Izzy has been hurt, she is at Dr. Snow's office now."

Without a second thought Clive and Muriel rushed right out the door, and Clive started the motorcar. While they were driving down to Dr. Snow's office Felix told them what happened, "I don't know if you know yet, but today's newspaper's headline was that the government was drafting men between the ages of 20-24. When I told this to Izzy she became hysterical and started running. I tried running after her, but somehow she managed to stay ahead of me. She ran right off one of the cliffs. I jumped in after her, but she was unconscious and her head had a big cut. I was able to get her to the sand bar, and from there to Dr. Snow's office. I know that I should've come to get you sooner, but I wasn't thinking straight myself. Dr. Snow stitched up her gash and when I left he was trying to put her arm in a cast because it was broken." Felix was overwrought. He wanted to get to Izzy as soon as possible. He knew that the motorcar was going as fast as it could, but somehow it didn' seem fast at all.

Clive and Muriel were shocked, but to Muriel's relief Clive did not blame Felix, "Oh my goodness," he whispered, "It could've been . . . what would have happened if . . . if you were not there," Clive could hardly get a sentence out and instead spoke in jumbled thoughts. He finally uttered a full sentence, "It could've been so much worse; what would've happened if there were rocks beneath the cliffs instead of water, what if you were not there to save her."

Felix looked up, this was hardly the response that he would've expected from Clive Pettibone, "Sir, it was my fault. She was only hysterical because of what I told her. On top of that I should've been able to catch up to her before she ran off the cliff. Why couldn't I catch up to her?" Felix held his head in his hands.

Clive wanted to respond but they had arrived at Dr. Snow's office, nothing mattered now except his daughter. Everyone ran out of the car and went right into Dr. Snow's office. Clive and Muriel ran straight to the doctor and asked him a million questions, "Physically she is going to be alright," he sighed, "But she suffered a bad blow to the head. Until she wakes up we won't be able to know how bad she truly is." Everyone was taken a bit off guard by this news. They hadn't even considered that Izzy might have some damage to her brain.

For the next few hours everyone just sat around, waiting for Izzy to wake up. When Clive and Muriel were outside talking to the doctor Felix saw Izzy's eyelids flutter. He clasped her hand, watching her intently to see if she would wake up.

All of a sudden her eyes opened and she began looking around. Where was she? She saw a cast on her arm and she had a terrible pain in her head; she also saw a strange boy. He began stroking her hair and kissing her hand. She didn't like it. He was saying how sorry he was and how it was all his fault. He was trying to reassure her, saying that everything was going to be okay. She really hated it when he leaned in to kiss her. She turned her head away and used her good arm to slap him in the face, "What are you doing?"

Felix was bewildered. What was wrong with Izzy? Then he wondered if she had injuries beside the ones that could be seen, "Izzy, what are you talking about. Are you alright . . . I mean, do you remember what happened?"

"Do I remember what happened?! I don't know what happened, all I know is that I am in an unfamiliar place, hurt, and you are trying to kiss me!"

All of a sudden Clive, Muriel, and Dr. Snow barged in, they could hear Izzy talking. Clive and Muriel rushed to her straight away, "Oh my goodness Izzy," Clive tried to give her a hug, "Thank goodness you are alright."

Izzy pushed him away, "Who are you?" She didn't remember a thing, but she was certain that she didn't know who all of these people were.

Felix spoke up, "She doesn't remember who I am," he was holding back tears, "She slapped me when I got closer to her."

"Well of course I did, you tried to kiss me! I don't even know who you are," she didn't know what was going on. She didn't know any of these people, but they all acted as if they knew her. Although, it did seem as if these people knew more about her than she did about herself. They at least seemed to know what had happened to her as well as her name. They kept on calling her Izzy, so she assumed that was what her name was.

Clive wasn't particularly overjoyed that Felix King tried to kiss his daughter; although, he assumed that if he tried to do it just now that wouldn't have been the first time they had kissed. Clive winced at the idea of his little girl kissing a boy, but he decided that wasn't important at the moment, "Izzy, don't you know who any of us are?"

Izzy was confused. Of course she didn't know who any of those people were, "I'm sorry, but I have never met you in my life."

Dr. Snow stepped in, "Izzy, do you remember anything: where you are from, who you are, past experiences?"

"Are you the doctor," Izzy asked. Dr. Snow nodded his head so she continued, "I don't remember a thing. To be honest, the only reason why I know that my name is Izzy is because that is what everyone is calling me."

Clive was leaving the room because he was about to cry. He couldn't believe that this could be happening. Muriel and Dr. Snow both followed him. Dr. Snow thought that it would be best if he explained Izzy's condition and what would be best for her.

Izzy and Felix were left alone in the room. Izzy felt a bit uncomfortable and Felix could sense it, "Izzy, I'm sorry for trying to kiss you. I wouldn't have done that if I knew that you didn't know who I was," Felix was almost in tears, but then he let out a laugh.

Izzy looked at him confused so Felix explained, "Last summer we went canoeing. We went all the way to pine bend. When we got there I had wanted to say that I loved you, but somehow I ended up saying that we should kiss each other as an "experiment" (Love May Be Blind But Their Neighbors Ain't)."

Izzy could tell she was important to this boy, but she didn't feel comfortable hearing him talk about things that were even slightly romantic, "Uhhh . . . Felix, that is your name, right?" Felix nodded his head so she continued, "Why don't you tell me about my family instead. Was that man and woman my parents?"

Felix sighed, "Yes, except Muriel is your stepmother. Your real mother died when you were just a baby. Your father was in the army when it happened. Clive married Muriel just about two years ago. Muriel was never married before; she was a teacher for many years, she traveled for a while, and she decided to move back to Avonlea a few years ago. Now she runs the general store. You have two older brothers: Arthur is about nine years older than you and Morgan is three years older than you. Arthur is a Veterinarian and Morgan is going to school to become a teacher. You also have an Aunt Lillian. She was your mother's sister. Actually, you didn't meet her until last year when you wrote to her."

"So that is my family. How about all of my friends and where I live . . . is it Avonlea?"

Felix hated the fact that he had to tell Izzy about all of the people that she was so close to, but he had to continue for her sake, "You live in Avonlea, PEI. You love it here: the land, the sea, the people. Your best friend is Cecily King, my younger sister. You were never really close until she came back from the sanatorium in New York. You see, she had Tuberculosis for a little over a year, but by the time she came home you both had matured and ended up becoming good friends. I can imagine that part of the reason you weren't really close to Cecily before is because you were a tomboy. You had the best pitch, could hit a home run, and you never wore dresses. I loved you for it. We were best friends. We always got into mischief together. I remember the first time you put on a dress. I remember wanting to tell you that you were really pretty, but I got too nervous and ended up saying, 'Hey Izzy! Does that dress mean you can't play ball anymore? (A Friend in Need)'"

Izzy was beginning to get a bit uncomfortable. She knew where this was going, but she decided to let Felix continue. She felt terrible that she couldn't remember him, or anyone else for that matter. It was obvious that it broke their hearts that she didn't know who they were, but she couldn't pretend to love this boy.

Felix continued, "You know, we have come so far. The first day I met you, you socked me in the nose! After that we were best friends. Then, when you put on a dress I felt a little differently about you. It took me a while to pinpoint what that feeling was. I remember when there was the bachelor's auction (Lonely Hearts). When you ended up coming to our house that night, you were so beautiful . . ."

"Felix, I understand that I was obviously very important to you, but I don't remember any of these things. I don't mean to hurt you but hearing you talk about me like this is a bit uncomfortable. I wish I could remember you, I really do, but in the meantime I can't try to pretend that I love you when I don't even know you. I really don't mean to hurt you. You seem very nice, but I would appreciate it if you wouldn't act as if we have known each other for years. We can just start over. Why don't we start by getting to know each other and become good friends?" Izzy felt horrible. She could see tears welling up in Felix's eyes when she said this. She knew that this was obviously very difficult for him, but she couldn't just go along with whatever he did just because she loved him at one point. She might have loved him once, but she didn't know him now. She was willing to make an effort to become friends with Felix as long as he respected her wishes.

"Izzy," there were tears streaming down his face, "I would do anything for you. I would do whatever you could ask of me if that is truly what you want. You don't remember me and you might never remember all of the things we have gone through together, but if you never remember me I'll start over. I'll make you fall in love with me again. I can't . . . live without you. We have gone through so much, it has taken us so long to get to where we are," Felix sighed. It hurt him to say what he was about to, but more than anything he wanted what was best for Izzy, "I have to go to war in about three months. You might not remember me by then. If you fall in love with someone else, then so be it. I only want what's best for you." With that Felix left the room. The fact that Izzy couldn't remember him hurt more than words could describe. He hoped that her memory would come back before he had to leave, but he knew that it probably wouldn't. He knew how painful it would be for him to visit Izzy, but he had to do it. He had to do everything he could . . . she had to remember him.

Before Felix left Dr. Snow's he told Clive and Muriel that he would stop by tomorrow to see how Izzy was doing. Clive felt bad for Felix. He knew that this must be difficult on him as well. He couldn't believe that this could be happening. He had spent many restless nights fretting over everything that could happen to his children, but he had never imagined that anything like that could happen. Dr. Snow told Muriel and himself that he thought it would be best to go to a specialist in Halifax because he would know what to do better than Dr. Snow did. Clive and Muriel decided that it would be best to go tomorrow. He would go tell Felix and ask him if he would want to go with them.

"Clive, why don't we see how Izzy is doing?" Muriel was worried, not only for Izzy but for Clive. The entire situation was hard for Muriel to witness: it hurt her when Izzy did not know who she was, it hurt her to see Clive so distressed, and it hurt her to see Felix so worried.

Clive followed Muriel into the room where Izzy was, "Izzy, how are you feeling?"

"Physically I feel fine, I just have a pretty bad headache . . . I would also like to apologize. I wish I could remember you, I really do. I didn't mean to cause you grief … I just … I can't pretend to care about all of you when I can't remember who you are. I am truly sorry," Izzy paused, thinking of things she wanted to know. To her dismay the only thing that came to mind was Felix, "Maybe you guys can tell me, did Felix and I love each other as much as he made it sound like we did?"

Muriel and Clived looked at each other, they were on the verge of tears. Dr. Snow answered, "I don't know the details of your relationship, but I do know this: Felix King took you to the lighthouse to tell you that he would have to go to war because the government is issuing a draft for men between 20-45. He is turning twenty in three months. You became hysterical and just started running, you ran straight off one of the cliffs and fell into the water. He jumped right in after you. I don't know how he did it, but he managed to get you safely to a sandbar and he ran over a mile with you in his arms so that he could get to my office. By the time he got here he didn't even know his own exhaustion. Based on that, I would say that you loved each other … I know that it is none of my business, but please give the boy a chance. He loves you, and I believe that if you search your heart you will find that you love him too. Even if you don't regain your memory, you fell in love with him once and I believe that you could again."

Izzy sat there silent. It was clear that Felix loved her, and she obviously did at one point. But how could she love someone who was a stranger … she just couldn't.
