The Pettibones decided to stay in Avonlea. The specialist said that Izzy would have a better chance of regaining her memory if she was in a familiar place. Felix spent the next few months trying to get Izzy to remember her life before the terrible incident. He would have to go to Europe soon and he desperately wanted Izzy to remember him, her family, friends, and Avonlea.

Meanwhile, Izzy hated the fact that she couldn't remember anything. There were so many people that claimed to be related to her, know her, or were friends with her. Everyone was telling her of things that they had done with her in the past, and she hated the fact that she couldn't remember these things. She knew nothing about her life, she was only left to believe what everyone told her. Cecily King said that she was her best friend so she tried to become friends with her. She liked Cecily so she didn't find it so difficult to be with her. Mr. and Mrs. Pettibone said that they were her parents (Mrs. Pettibone was only her step mother), Morgan and Arthur her brothers, so she tried to get to know them as well … and Felix, she found it the most difficult to be with him. Everytime he came he was holding back a fountain of tears, he tried to respect her wishes and just start by becoming her friend. She could see the longing in his eyes as he looked at her; the longing for Izzy to love him back. He never tried to move things along too quickly, or remind her of how much they loved each other but that just hurt Izzy more. She felt horrible seeing how much this boy loved her, but she knew that she could not return his love.

Felix was finishing the last of his packing as he was going to have to leave on the afternoon train. He didn't want to leave: he didn't want to leave his family, his friends, and his beloved Izzy. He knew that by the time he got back she could very well be engaged or even married. She would've forgotten about him. Of course, he didn't matter much to her already. She knew that he loved him, but what good is that? He loved her, but she didn't love him.

All of a sudden there was a knock on the door, "Come in."

Felix turned around, it was Felicity, "Felix," there were tears in her eyes. She tried to make the situation a little more cheerful but failed miserably, "Remember when you were younger? All you wanted to do was go away, mostly from me. I remember when we opened our time capsule filled with wishes for the future, remember? The one you, Sarah, and I made. When you read yours it said, 'I want to wish for more wishes, but if I can't have that I wish for a million dollars so that I can get away from my miserable sister Felicity' (Out of the Ashes). I remember when you used to play war with Morgan and …" Felicity froze. She hadn't meant to mention her, but when thinking about it she thought that it would be best, "and Izzy."

Felix turned away, there were tears in his eyes. He wished that he could forget her the same way she had forgotten him, but how could he? He knew that he could never stop loving Izzy. He felt as if by going away all hope was lost and that she would never love him back, "Felicity, I don't know what to do." All of a sudden he broke down in tears. Felicity went over to him and gathered him into a sisterly hug.

"Don't give up, don't lose hope."

"Felicity I feel dead inside, I feel as if my life was over the moment I realized that she didn't know who I was. In some ways I'm glad I'm going to war. At best I will get killed, at worst I won't have to see Izzy fall in love with someone else … Felicity, I hated the fact that I would have to go, but I knew that the thing that would keep me going was Izzy. Knowing that I would return to her. Now, I have no reason to make it out of there. She doesn't need me anymore."

All of a sudden Felicity slapped Felix on the face, as hard as she could manage, "Felix I will not hear you talk like this! Izzy might not love you but Mother and Father love you, Aunt Hetty, Aunt Olivia, Uncle Jasper, Cecily, Sarah, Daniel, Montgomery, and all your friends love you … and I love you. I need you. You're my brother and I love you. If you die on the front I don't think I could go on. Felix, I need you to come home," Felicity was crying uncontrollably. Felix walked over to her, tears streaming down his own face. He wrapped his sister in his arms and embraced her in a brotherly hug.

"Felicity, I'll come home … I promise. When I'm in Europe I'll think of Avonlea and everyone in it. I'll think of coming home to all of you," Felix paused. With everything happening with Izzy he forgot about how much everyone else loved him and would miss him … and how he loved them, "Felicity, will you promise to do something for me?"

"Anything"

"Take care of Izzy for me. Don't think of me when looking after her, just think Izzy. I know that her family and friends will take care of her, but I would feel better knowing that you are keeping an eye on her as well."

"Felix … I promise that I will make sure that Izzy is alright. Don't worry. And Felix … I know that it might not seem this way now, but I know that things will work out between you and Izzy. I don't know how to describe it but I just know," Felicity didn't know how, but she was sure of the fact that things would work out between her brother and Izzy. She didn't know how it was going to happen, but she was positive that it was going to happen one way or another.

Felix smiled. Sarah had said the same thing a few months prior. He wasn't going on much, but hearing Felicity and Sarah both saying those things gave him hope that things would work out.

Everyone was at the train station to see Felix off, even Izzy. He hugged each one of them goodbye … then, he came to Izzy. She held out her hand to shake, but instead he held it in both of his, "Izzy, I know that it doesn't mean much to you, but I love you. I only want what's best for you. I'm not going to ask you to wait for me or anything like that because it wouldn't be fair to you. But I beg you, return to me," Felix was holding back tears. He knew that the irony was that he was the one who was going to Europe, but he felt as if she had left him rather than he was leaving her.

Izzy looked into Felix's eyes, she could see the longing in them. She wished for his sake that she could return his love, but she just couldn't. She gave a polite smile, "You are doing your country proud. I'll be praying for your swift and safe return."

Tears began streaming down his face, "Goodbye," he wished that he could take her in his arms and give her a passionate kiss goodbye, but he couldn't. So, with that he got onto the train with his friend Elbert and they waved goodbye to their friends and family. Although Felix was leaving his home all he could do was pray that Izzy would return to him.
