Felix was unoccupied at the moment so he sat down and decided to reread Felicity's letter since it was the last one that he had received. He missed her. It had been months since he had seen her. He mostly kept on rereading the segment on Izzy …
"Felix, I am afraid there is still no change. She still doesn't remember her life before the accident. However, Cecily and myself have become especially good friends with her. She is so much happier now. When you left she was only a shell of what she once was; so lifeless and empty. She may not remember her old life, but she is back to her old self. She is the Izzy that we know and love, she even played a game of baseball with Daniel. The doctor said that this is a good sign. He didn't want to get our hopes up, but he said that there is still a chance that she will regain her memory. She just needs something to … jog it.
Felix, you also wanted to know if she had any … romantic attachments. There is this one young man who she seems to be particularly fond of, William Taylor. His father is a businessman from New York, and he hopes to take over the business one day. He is spending his summer at the White Sands. The two of them have gone on many outings together. You told me that when taking care of Izzy I should think of her rather than you. I can't help but think of you; so, I thought that you would like to know that Mr. Taylor is a very nice, successful, and respectful young man. He practically worships the ground that Izzy walks on …"
Felix abruptly put the letter down. He couldn't bear to read anymore. If Izzy fell in love with someone else that was fine, but he couldn't bear to read about it.
Felix's comrades saw the pained expression on Felix's face, "What's wrong King? Is it news from home?"
None of the other soldiers and Felix were particularly good friends, but they enjoyed each other's company. They never talked about anything really deep, but then again they only knew each other for about a month. Felix tried to save any troubles from home for Elbert, but he was going to be busy that night so he just pretended that he had hurt his wrist.
He sat there talking with the other soldiers, everyone was talking about home. Then one soldier started talking about his girl. Almost everyone talked about how they had to leave either a beau or fíance beyond. Once everyone had talked about a "delicate person" or a "kind heart" a few soldiers noticed that Felix didn't say a thing, "Hey King, don't you have a sweetheart? A special girl to return to?"
Felix wanted to talk about Izzy, that was all he was really able to think about. He gave his famous lopsided smile, "Well … there is someone that I love."
"Why don't you tell us about her?" Everyone overseas understood how difficult it was to leave those you love behind.
"Well," Felix began, "her name is Izzy Pettibone. She came to Avonlea a few years back because her father wanted to find a place where his family could settle so he decided to take a teaching position at the Avonlea school. Her mother died when she was a baby and her father was a military man, on top of that she has two brothers. When we met I was twelve and she was ten. I loved her more than any other girl because she was a tomboy. She only wore pants, she didn't spend the entire morning primping, and she could throw the best fastball. Well … one day she put on a dress. I thought she was going to become like all the other snotty girls, but she was the same Izzy. I did a lot of stupid things, but each time she forgave me. One day I really messed up …"
One of the boys jokingly said, "Please tell us, I'm sure that listening to someone else's stupidity will make us feel better about all of the stupid things we have done."
Everyone laughed and Felix continued, "Well, one summer I wanted to move our relationship along. We were canoeing and stopped at Pine Bend. I had wanted to say that I really liked her, but instead I said that we should move on to the next step … kissing. As bad as that was, it only got worse. I said we could think about it as an experiment."
Everyone began to get curious, "Well … what did she do?"
"She was about to let me kiss her, but she quickly got up and said that she just couldn't do it. But as bad as that sounds, it gets worse yet. Elbert and another boy (Donny Lester) asked me what happened, and I told them that I wasn't going to tell them anything. They ended up taking that as if I wasn't going to tell them anything because something happened. They spread a rumor around town that we had kissed and Izzy was upset with me for over two months."
All of the soldiers cringed, "Yeah … that is very stupid, but when did she forgive you … or did she?"
"Well, her Aunt Lillian came from Boston and Izzy wanted to go back with her. She said that it would be a "whole knew her". I embarrassed myself in the middle of the hotel lobby (I worked there) by saying that she did need a "whole knew her", and I said that I thought that she was perfect just the way she was. I begged her to stay with me. I don't regret embarrassing myself like that because she decided to stay. When her Aunt Lillian's train left the station she said that there was only one way to erase a white lie; she kissed me."
"Wow! That sure does beat our stories. You sure were lucky that she forgave you."
Felix frowned, "That's not the end of the story. Things seemed to be going fine until … Well, on my sister's wedding day I showed up in a navy uniform (it was about a year ago). Izzy was so hurt that I didn't mention this to her. She was also hurt because I was the one who begged her to stay, but I was the one who was leaving! She thought that I didn't really love her anymore. Well, let's just say that we had a wonderful "walk". During that walk she begged me to stay, I decided to. I couldn't see how I could leave."
"Wait, what did she see when she found out about the conscription?"
"I had to tell her. She didn't even know about it until I told her because she hadn't gotten the newspaper yet. I took her by the lighthouse; when I told her she ran, and she can run fast. She was practically hysterical, she ran straight off one of the cliffs and fell into the water."
Everyone was shocked. None of them knew what they would do if the love of their life fell off of a cliff.
Felix continued, "I jumped right in after her. I had to swim about fifty yards to get to a sandbar, and from there I picked her up and ran to Dr. Snow's office. When she finally woke up I was reassuring her that everything would be alright. Then I tried to kiss her. She slapped my face."
At this point everyone was confused. They wanted to know why Izzy Pettibone would do such a thing. They were all intently listening to Felix.
"Well … soon enough we found out that she didn't know any of us. She had hit her head on one of the rocks and was suffering from amnesia," Felix was trying to hold back tears, "I tried to get her to remember me, and her life; I only had three months because I was going to turn twenty then. Well, she didn't. I know Izzy, the only reason why she spent any time with me at all was because she felt sorry for me. Before I got on the train all she said to me was, 'You are doing your country proud. I'll be praying for your swift and safe return.' In reality she was the one who had to return to me."
Felix paused and looked at the letter from Felicity. He was unable to go on and gave it to one of the other soldiers to read. When he had finished reading it aloud everyone just sat there, silent.
Finally, Felix spoke up, "So boys, I do love someone, but she doesn't love me. So now you know that Izzy Pettibone is the person so dear to my heart."
