Chapter 14
"Alright Jill listen up. Doc Jansen has built us a nice Aetherium Neutralizer Prototype to test out." said Soap.
"Thanks to the data you helped gathered, I was able to get the precise estimate for a test run. Hugo and Kapoor strapped it on an ACV for drop off." said Ava.
"Your job is to make sure nothing happens to it. We have a testing site planned and ready so we need it in one piece yeah?" said Kapoor.
"Be advised that Terminus will be aware of this and will try to take it for themselves. Kill any opposition that gets in your way Valentine. Dead ot alive, we can't afford to lose this prototype." said Greene.
"Good luck Jill, we're all counting on ya!" said Soap.
Later...
Jill arrives to the area via chopper about to be dropped off.
"Coming up on DZ. Wait for me go" said Reaper 1-1
"You have your orders. Secure and escort the package to the mission area, keep it safe until it can be test fired. Lets get it done."
"Alright. Let's do this." said Jill.
Reaper 1-1 reached the drop zone for Jill.
"You are go for LALO. Give 'em hell Deadbolt!"
Jill lands on the ground below seeing Reaper 1-1 fly off.
Loud noises was heard with Jill looking to see two AA missiles shoot towards Reaper 1-1.
"Spike! Spike! Twelve o'clock! Gone glowworm! Flare ou-"
The turrets successfully shot down Reaper 1-1.
Reaper 1-1? Reaper 1-1 do you copy? Goddamn it! All stations this is Valentine, Reaper 1-1 is down. Terminus has AA turrets in the AO." said Jill.
"Steamin' Hell...that triple A wasn't in out ISR. Do not let those SAMs lock on our transport bird or Jansen's prototype is toast. Take 'em out!" said Soap.
Jill readies up with a brought in Lachmann SMG with a red dot optic, heading towards the AA site. She then sees a rope leading to the AA site and pulls out an ascendant hook to latch on.
"We're burning time, set your charges on those launchers" ordered Soap.
"Transport is entering effective firing range now, hurry up!" urged Ava.
"Working on it, hang on!" assured Jill reaching higher and higher to the site.
"Missile launchers are on the roof, get up there and plant your charges!" added Soap.
She reached the roof being met with Terminus mercs waiting for her guarding those AA guns with their lives. Jill make quick work and headed towards the first of two guns.
"This is Jill, reached the AA site. Give me a sec to clear the area to start planting charges."
She plants the first of two charges and gets clear before more Terminus reinforcements enter the AO.
Once Jill cleared the area again, she goes to plant the second charge. A few seconds pass with both AA guns blown up and turned to scrap, making it safe for the transport chopper to drop off the prototype.
"Jill to Deadbolt. AA Guns are neutralized. You're clear for dropoff."
"Deadbolt? I know you are out there. I know you can hear me"
"Viktor Zakhaev I presume?" asked Jill.
"Ah yes. Jill Valentine. You should know I offered a bonus to anyone who brings me you alive"
"They can try. I'm coming for you Zakhaev!"
"Let us see if the stories I heard about you, if anything, have been merely watered down."
"Hotshot. Drone deploying flare above DZ. Area is clear...for now. Now get there before Terminus does." said Dobbs.
Jill looks over the rooftop and sees the flare. She then jumps off and parachutes down below.
"Prototype is in your airspace, arrival imminent! She's heavier than she looks. Took three of us to strap her to the ACV" said Kapoor.
"Well that's no way to talk about a lady" joked Jill.
"Nice to have a laugh while we can Jill. Now get to the ACV yeah?"
Jill lands on the ground safely near the ACV drop point.
"All stations: Lock down that drop site. I want that package intact." ordered Fletcher.
"Jill, keep that ACV secure. That prototype's one of a kind." said Soap.
Jill quickly cleared the area of Terminus and undead leaving just her and the ACV.
"ACV secure. What now?" asked Jill.
"Hugo found an Aetherium deposit big enough to really test the Neutralizer's effectiveness!" said Ava.
"The vehicle already knows the coordinates. Just make sure the ACV don't get "Neutralized" along the way." explained Kapoor.
Jill goes to press the activation button on the back of the ACV.
"Post complete. Loading system drive."
Jill then goes to climb up and sit on the ACV to ride it all the way towards the test site. She does a quick ammo check and lets the ACV take it from there.
"En route to testing site."
Jill then hears more zombies incoming from both front and back directions.
"Ah shit."
Jill remembers she packed an emergency portable sentry gun for this occasion and plants it on the front of the ACV while she switches to a Holger 26 LMG to cover the rear. She sees the massive horde of zombies, elites and hellhounds rushing towards her.
"Fucking dogs too?" she cursed.
"Don't let a single one of e-"
"Destroy the prototype yeah, yeah I fuckin got it" Jill interrupts Soap.
Jill focused fire mowing down all zombie threats from every direction making sure the ACV remains intact. When they got too close, shed threw some decoy grenades to take the heat off her.
"Can this thing go any faster?" asked Jill to herself.
The sentry gun was firing at all directions as the ACV entered a merc occupied DZ of reinforcements to get in the way.
"You bastards just don't know when to quit." she said to herself taking fire.
"Barrera couldn't have found a less heavily defended test site?" asked Greene.
"This outbreak is just one of those situations where none of the options we're stuck with are great." said Ava.
"True that. After all, I got stuck with you."
Jill kept fighting on as the ACV was inching closer to the test site. She had to use an energy mine or two once the decoys ran out to also help save in ammo.
Large Aetherium crystals coming from the ground was the indicator that she was within reach of the site.
"This is Jill. Closing in on Aetherium testing site."
The ACV makes a complete stop as Jill got off to keep the zombies at bay.
"Alright. Package is on site. ACV's done her thing. Now it's down to you Jill." said Kapoor.
"Switch on the Aetherium Neutralizer's power supply" said Soap.\
"The prototype's boot up sequence takes a while and will attract the undead like flies to a corpse." explained Ava.
"You heard Jansen, you're cleared hot Jill. Expect contact." said Soap.
Jill powers up the Neutralizer and hunkered down next to it to hold them off for as long as needed.
"Hope this works"
Then a laser beam came right at Jill as she dodged out of the way.
"Guys? I got a three headed BOW on my ass!"
"Steamin hell, it's a Mega Abomination! Don't let that bastard destroy the neutralizer. Shove a grenade down it's throat!" ordered Soap.
Jill desperately fights off the Mega Abomination and the undead, doing everything she can to buy the device the time it needs. Every time the Mega Abomination fired it's mouth lasers, Jill took a shot by throwing a grenade it its mouth and watched one of it's three heads pop and explode.
"Grenades work. Got it."
"Open those pearly white you ugly bastard!"
Jill throws another grenade at it's mouth making it two for two.
But before she could go for the hat trick...
"Boot up sequence is complete! Neutralizer is ready for test fire!" said Ava.
Jill quickly makes a run for it to detonate the weapon while being blasted by the Mega Abomination. She makes a jump to reach the button, falling to the ground to cover her head as the prototype goes off affecting everything in the area.
"Aetherium Neutralizer activate." said Ava breathing a sigh of relief.
"Jill? Jill do you copy? VALENTINE COME IN!" Soap frantically calls out.
Silence fills the comms for mere moments until the sound of Jill coughing echoed back as a response.
"*coughing* This is Jill. I'm alright. Prototype went off without a hitch."
"Bloody hell Jill, thought we lost you." said Kapoor.
"Ready to RTB. Just get me the hell out of here."
"Bravo Zulu Jill. Fang will pick you up for RTB. Did a hell of a job today." said Greene.
Later...
Ava, Ravenov, Soap and Greene all gathered around a table that had a touch screen to asses the test results. Ava swiped from the Deadbolt logo to photos of the prototype and the effects on the test site.
"As you can see, the test was a success. The Aether Neutralizer destabilizes any Aetherium within its blast radius. What remains of the element rapidly decays into harmless isotopes. But, that was raw unprocessed Aethrium. The material in Zakhaev's vial is highly enriched. My projections show this weapons grade Aethrium can withstand our prototype." explained Ava.
"In other words, you failed. This was a waste of time and resources." said Greene.
"Not true! The principle has been proven. We just need to amplify the neutralizer and recalibrate its output." corrected Ava.
"And you can do that? Can you?" asked Soap.
"Not quite. But Zakhaev obtained key research writter by the leading expert in Aetherium Enrichment." explained Ava swiping to a photo of one Oskar Strauss which had him affiliated with Projekt's Endstation, NOVA, DARPA and Requiem.
"Strauss..." said Ravenov recognizing the man.
This had Jill and Soap curious.
"Old mate of yours?" Soap asked.\
"Friends are a luxury I can seldom afford" said Ravenov.
"Zakhaev stored Strauss' research in a vault. It'll be heavily guarded, but that research holds the key to upgrading the neutralizer." explained Ava getting a location on the vault as with a photo of Fletcher and file.
"We don't have time for this. Our focus should be on Zakhaev himself!" argued Greene.
"And if we find him, then what? He unleashes his remaining vial and we have nothing to counter it?" argued Ravenov.
"I'm going after that research. Greene, If there's anything I've learned about outbreaks is that you destroy the bioweapon to contain it. All the ammo in the world that can cover Urzikstan 100 times over won't mean a damn thing if what's causing it keeps making more." urged Jill.
"Jill's right. Deadbolt might be able to hammer this thing hard enough to contain it. But if the objective is to end it, that neutralizer's our best shot." said Soap standing up for Jill and Ravenov.
"Fine, get Strauss' data. See what Dr. Jansen can do with it." Greene reluctantly agreed and takes her leave.
Soap looks at Jill, tilts his head to signal her "Let's go"
As they all left, Ava began to get a migraine as she pulls out a pill bottle and takes too.
"Ava, what is wrong?" asked Ravenov concerned with Jill looking on too.
"Just a migraine. It'll pass. They always do." assured Ava taking her leave with Jill as Ravenov stays to look at the growing effects of the Aetherium on the EZ from the desk tablet.
