So I'm changing up this chapter, just a few things because it just wasn't working for me, I apologize for any confusion and inconvenience
True to his word Tony didn't say anything during the three weeks but Kate had found little 'presents' on her desk starting Monday.
Gum, herbal teas, peppermints, ginger drops and even a small pillow for her lower back greeted her in the mornings. Kate was impressed because her office was always locked, but then she knew Tony had skills, whether it be flirting with the cleaning crew or picking the lock to get in her office he'd been able to get in. He also helped with her occasional alibi, when she'd tried to thank him he simply said "That's what partners do." with a grin.
It was at game night four weeks later, when everyone could make it, that Gibbs and Kate made the announcement. "We're having a baby." with Gibbs wrapped around Kate, a hand resting on her belly, that Tony made her appreciate him more.
"Who had today on the baby pool?" despite knowing a full four weeks before the others, Tony wasn't going to spoil it, he just hugged Kate and said "Congratulations."
"We have a Kibblet!" Abby bounced squealing.
"We're going to give the director a heads up, though it won't really change how I've been working." Kate admitted.
"That's why you haven't been going into the interrogations like the other profilers," McGee said as understanding dawned on him. "in case a suspect turned violent." Kate nodded.
"We have to have a baby shower!" Abby squealed and bounced more.
"Why does a baby need a shower?" Ziva whispered to Ducky.
"Baby shower is having a party for the mother to gift her things before the baby is born." Ducky said knowing not everyone had baby showers.
"Oh, we do not do that in case of...you know." Ziva didn't want to say in case something happens to the mother or child before birth.
"Some families feel the same, I believe that is why most women wait until the second trimester to inform family and friends of their pregnancy." Ducky explained. "I'm sure Caitlin will understand if you do not wish to be involved." half listening Ziva nodded.
"So have you told Mom and Dad?" Rachel asked.
"I have not." Kate shook her head.
"Afraid you're going to move to the head of the line?" Danny teased.
"I am sure I'm driving the bus now," Kate laughed adding "and no, I'm telling them tomorrow, I didn't want them calling you two and ruining the surprise."
"Like they'd call us?" Rachel laughed sipping her wine.
"She called you about Danny." Kate pointed out finally released from all the hugs.
"True." Rachel gave a nod.
"I say she blames me, it's my influence that's lead you astray." Danny said proudly making Kate laugh.
"It's me." Rachel shook her head "As the oldest girl I was supposed to show Katie what a proper marriage is."
"They'll blame Gibbs for corrupting me."
"I say Gibbs get the blame." Tony agreed with Kate.
"Danny." McGee pointed.
"I'm sorry, are we actually betting on this?" Rachel asked watching Tony take out a note pad.
"This is the first I get to be involved in," Kate chuckled giving Tony the go ahead "baby's sex and due date are going to be the other ones."
"Dollar?" Gibbs asked, the others were five dollars but this one was just family.
"You taking the blame?" Tony asked holding his hand out for the dollar, Gibbs nodded giving him two dollars, one for himself and one for Kate, whose purse was somewhere in the house.
"A dollar then." digging into her wallet she pulled out a dollar to go with her twenty for poker.
"I can't believe we're betting on this." Danny chuckled in disbelief.
"We also bet on sports, Michaelson takes care of sports betting, I handle team Gibbs related things." Tony said without skipping a beat with his writing and money collecting.
"Team Gibbs related?" Rachel asked.
"Like when someone will return to work after an injury, Gibbs and his dislocated shoulders or being shot." he looked to Kate who smirked.
"Almost always the next day if not the day of." McGee supplied.
"Kate," Tony nodded to her "cost me money."
"Sorry Tony." Kate chuckled.
"Couldn't wait one more day?" Tony asked glancing at her before looking at Ducky as he took the older man's dollar, Ducky just nodded towards Gibbs.
"Boredom won out." Kate chuckled.
"Is that what we're calling it?" Tony glanced at Gibbs, who for once wasn't paying attention, Kate rolled her eyes with a blushing smile as she pushed Tony's shoulder.
Abby and Rachel discussed baby shower plans while they played poker, promising to iron out the details in the morning and who to invite from work both past and present as Kate still had some friends from Secret Service. "We should do co-ed, maybe a barbeque so the boys are included." Abby suggested.
"Is that allowed?" McGee asked.
"It's my baby shower so I say yes." Kate nodded checking her cards.
"What does one do at a baby shower?" Ziva asked, she knew gifts but that was all.
"Different games, food and with it being co-ed Gibbs get to help with presents." Rachel nodded to him.
"We'll set it up after we learn the sex of the baby." Abby said then asked "We are learning the sex of the baby right?"
"How else am I supposed to know what to paint the nursery?" Gibbs asked.
"Not pink," Kate shook her head, pink was never her color but her mother had forced both her and Rachel into pink outfits until they were old enough to fight back. "pale blue maybe or lilac."
"Whatever you want." Gibbs promised.
"Pizza or Chinese and I'm in." Tony nodded playing with the stack of poker chips in front of him. "So when do we find out?"
"Next doctor appointment is Tuesday..."
"This Tuesday? We need more time for the work baby pool, if you tell the Director on Monday it will take a few days to get through the office, can we tell them the week after?" Tony asked.
"For the sake of the baby pool yes." Kate couldn't help but chuckle and shake her head amused.
"We can start ours tonight, sex and due date when we are finished up." Tony said checking his cards again.
"After we find out what the baby is we need to register at the different stores for what you need which is everything." Abby reminded sipping her soda.
Jenny was curious seeing Kate and Gibbs step into her office first thing on Monday morning, standing up she gestured them to chairs but Gibbs said "It's just real quick."
Nodding Jenny waited, it was Kate that spoke up "I'm pregnant."
Jenny couldn't help but smile "I thought you were coming in for something serious, more serious." she amended
"No," Kate promised "just pregnant."
"Thank you for letting me know, this explains the interrogation thing." Jenny nodded "Is there anything else?"
"No we just wanted you to know." Gibbs said.
"And I thank you for that, continue with your self imposed modified duty" she nodded to Kate "and send... DiNozzo, I'm guessing, up this way for the baby pool." she smirked.
After Jenny was told word flew around the bull pen and the rest of the building, Ned held out a yellow smiley face balloon to Kate after lunch. "Congratulations Boss."
"Thank you Ned." Kate smiled.
"You need anything, let me know." Ned offered.
"Less cologne," Rourke gruffed, not that Ned wore a lot, he just knew from experience that Kate would become more sensitive to smells "strong smells irritate pregnant women," he explained with a chuckle seeing Ned sniffing his own lapel "wife couldn't stand the smell of cooking meat but craved burgers and all kinds of barbeque."
"How'd you solve that?" Kate asked with an amused smile.
"Take out, so if need be I know a great barbeque joint." he grinned "Congratulations."
"Thank you, obviously you're in charge while I'm gone."
"Obviously." he nodded. "I'll keep an eye on the 'kids' while you're away." she knew he meant both her present and past teams. "Send Ned to check on Abby and such." he promised.
"Thank you."
"So how'd your folks take it?"
"Haven't told them yet." Kate admitted, but she knew how it would go and she was ready for it.
"Well we will leave you to that, let's go Ned, I want you watching every interrogation." Rourke gruffed gesturing to the door. "Kate, If they're not happy for you, they're idiots." Rourke said before closing the door, she'd heard it lock. Kate gave a quiet laugh, Tony had said the same thing except he'd said morons.
Dialing the phone Kate waited "Hello?"
"Hi Mom." she knew it was early but she was hoping to catch her father before he left for work.
"Katie." her mom sounded happy to hear her voice. "It's Katie." Kate heard the distinct click of the button, her mother put her on speaker.
"Katie." her father's no nonsense voice came over the phone.
Kate decided on the band aid approach, just yank it off. "I was just calling to say hello and to let you know I'm pregnant." she waited for it.
"Caitlin!" her mother gasped.
"What?" her father roared.
So far they were responding exactly how she knew they would, she was waiting to see who they were going to blame. "Gibbs and I are having a baby." she knew her father had heard her but the man had yelled 'what' so she repeated her news.
"Out of wedlock?"
"Yes Mom." Kate said evenly.
"Katie," she sounded disappointed "I thought I set a better example for you and your sister."
"It wasn't you, it was them, those people she's with now. Loose morals." Her father gruffed "You need to get married."
"No thank you," Kate disagreed but promised her father "we're fine the way we are."
"Katie it's a sin."
"Mom I'm fine, I'm sure God will forgive me." Kate sipped her hot tea, that Tony had brought when he did the coffee run.
"How can I show my face...you, Rachel and Danny..."
"It's an embarrassment." her father muttered.
"Embarrassing to you." Kate said still without raising her voice.
"To any parent." her father gruffed, "You need to get away from those people."
"Our Priest..." her mother started but Kate smirked knowing they'd flip out if they saw Abby, Abby who regularly hung out with Nuns, Nuns who had sent Kate a congratulations card.
"I simply called to tell you I was pregnant, I'm not listening to a lecture, my life, my way." with that Kate hung up.
