Peace had finally been restored, thanks to Team Natsu. The famed one hundred year quest had finally been completed. Dragon gods that they were tasked with sealing were finally gone. Tired, bruised and beaten they made their way home with smiles on their faces.
They were welcome back in open arms from their guild. A massive party was thrown in their honor. Fights broke out, laughs were had. Finally things could go back to normal as they once were. Though even with the cause of celebration, one person in particular wasn't celebrating, and his team knew exactly why.
Natsu, being the one that fought all of the dragon gods, with assistance from his team of course. But the last God really hit him hard, being Ignia the Fire Dragon God, the very blood son of Igneel. The information was a lot for him to process at first, but he knew he had to put a stop to him to his madness. But Erza, Gray, Lucy, Happy, Carla and Wendy witnessed the battle first hand. They saw Natsu kill his basically half brother in front of their very own eyes, and that mere thought was eating at him, more than he thought it would.
Gray tried his best to cheer his best friend up by bickering with each other like they always did, but to no avail. Lucy was unsure how go approach the subject, Erza was worried about him, but she didn't wanna press him to tell them what he was feeling.
Even the guild noticed this behavior, but most shrugged it off that maybe he was just exhausted.
The most notable change was the fact Jellal Fernandez, former guild master of Crime Sorciere joined Fairy Tail much to Erza's joy who finally convinced him. Natsu watched the raging party going on around him, before letting a sigh escape his lips, noticing Erza talking to Jellal. Her smile, her cheeks that turned as red as her hair when she spoke to him.
"See ya guys," Natsu waved goodbye to the members, pushing open the doors as he left, making everyone stop to look where he once stood.
Gray ran his hand through his hair with a soft sigh. "I didn't think this would affect him this much," he said, turning to face Lucy who sported the same look as him.
"Maybe he just needs time. I mean he did kill his own half brother, I'd think anyone would be reeling from that," Lucy said softly with a frown, hoping Natsu would return back to normal.
A Week had gone by, but Natsu was nowhere to be seen. He started taking solo jobs, leaving his team behind to worry about his well-being. Not even Happy was allowed to come, which threw everyone for a loop. But nobody knew besides Ignia, another thing was bothering him, something that made his heart ache at the thought.
Erza, someone who's he's looked up to his entire life since a kid. He always wanted to be her equal in battle and in general. He always strived to be her equal. But her attention was else where, on a certain Azura haired wizard, Jellal. He had no ill will to the guy, but he couldn't help but feel angry when he was with Erza. And now that he was there all of the time at the guild, he felt like Erza was better off without him now.
Natsu rested his aching body against a tree. Bruises and slight cuts littered his body. His hair shadowed his puffy eyes, his hands resting on his knees as you could hear a stifled sob come from his mouth. His head rested on his knees as he let out a shaky sigh. "What the hell is wrong with me? Why do I feel like my heart is breaking... w-why do I care if she's with him..?" His teeth gritted together tightly as more sobs racked his body. "w-why?..."
Meanwhile, Erza was sitting down with Jella in Magnolia Park, chatting about anything, until a certain subject was brought to light.
"Have you heard from Natsu at all?" Jellal asked Erza who frowned at the question.
"I haven't heard a word about him. He hasn't been to the guild in weeks, and I'm really starting to worry about him. He hasn't been the same since he killed Ignia," she let out a soft sigh escape her lips, her eyes glued to the ground. "I wish he'd talk to me..." A single tear ran down her cheek, causing Jellal to pull her into a hug.
Jellal held her close, his hand rubbing up and down her back. He, too, was worried about Natsu, but he had a feeling it was more than Ignia that was on his mind. He wasn't a fool to not notice Natsu's behavior change when he joined the guild. How he seemed to glare when him and Erza were together. 'Does Erza know that Natsu has feelings for her?' he thought as he stared down at the red haired woman who sniffled against his chest. The mere site of it broke his heart.
Erza noticed Jellal staring down at her as she looked back up at him. Neither of them said a word as Erza's cheeks began to flush, her hands fidgeting with his blue coat. "Jellal.. there's something I want to tell you," she says softly, leaning up to him.
"W-what is it Erza?" He asked, his cheeks too getting as red as her hair.
Erza didn't say anything as she leaned up to him, her lips puckering ready to kiss him. His eyes widened as he quickly grabbed her shoulders, pushing her back. She looks up at him confused.
"Jellal.. why did yo-"
"I can't do this, Erza," he said to her, causing her to pull back. "It's not that I don't care for you, but I'm not the one you should be confessing too," he averted his gaze from her shocked face.
"W-what do you mean Jellal, I do love you, I've always loved you since we were kids in the tower," she held her shoulder, glancing away from him. "Did something change? Or are you gonna tell me you have to repent for your sins?"
Jellal sighed, running a hand through his hair. "That's not Erza, did you ever take to consider someone else has fallen for you right under your nose, and you were too focused on me to see it?" He asked, staring straight into her eyes.
Erza blinked her eyes in confusion, "what do you mean? Who else could feel love for me?"
Jellal just let out a soft chuckle, "and you call him an idiot. Who do you think? He's a certain dragon slayer," he grinned playfully, noticing Erza's expression go from confused to utter shock.
"N-natsu?!"
He simply nodded at her answer. "I've noticed the way he looks at you. His cheeks get all rosey pink, and you can tell he wants to tell you, but he's too afraid to tell you."
"Why would he be afraid to tell me? I mean I'm flattered he does like me, but do I.. feel the same way?" She asked that question to herself mainly as she dug through her brain at all the times where she noticed his attitude towards her change. The Tower Of Heaven he practically almost gave his life for her, Nirvana he fought to keep Jellal out of prison. He did so much for me... how did I not realize it? I call him an idiot and dense, yet here I am years down the road now realizing how he feels... how I feel.. does he think I don't want him around anymore because of Jellal?"
Jellal watched Erza go deep into thought. He noticed her eyes widen as she had finally come to the conclusion. "So, do you see him now?" He asked with a warm smile.
Erza's blush deepened as she gave him a small smile back. "I do, I guess I just thought my heart was only meant for you, I'm sorry Jellal I have to find him."
"Don't apologize to me, you should be apologizing to him," Jellal slightly scolded her playfully with a grin. "Now go."
Erza sternly nodded before jumping off the bench, and taking off out of the park, leaving Jellal alone.
"This was for the best," he said softly to himself as his eyes glanced towards the sky deep in thought.
Erza scoured every inch of Magnolia, desperately hoping she would catch site of that lovable pink haired idiot. To her disappointment she could never find him, until she walked near the river. Suddenly she heard muffled cries, which caused her to freeze in her tracks. Her body turned to a little oak tree, her heart shattering into pieces at the sight she was seeing.
Natsu was curled up next to the tree. His knees were curled up tightly against his chest. The scarf given to him by Igneel was nicely folded next to him. She could hear him trying his best to quiet his sobs, but to no avail. The mere site of Natsu crying threw daggers into her heart. Did I cause him this much pain?" She thought as she slowly walked up to him.
"E-erza... do you just not see anymore, am I not worth your time anymore?" He muttered into a whimper.
Erza could feel her heart breaking apart at the words he was saying. She walked up to him with a sad smile before she responded. "I do see you Natsu."
Natsu's head shot up faster than lightning, surprising even Erza. His head slowly turned to see Erza with tears in her eyes. "E-erza?..."
She quickly dropped to her knees next to him, her hands pulling him against her chest, tears coming full force. "I'm so sorry Natsu..." her voice was breaking as she leaned back to look at him. "I've been so blind to the truth, so focused on Jellal, that I completely forgot about you," she smiled softly, touching his cheek. "Someone who's always been there for me through everything, someone who promised I wouldn't shed another tear if he could help it... someone.." Her eyes fluttered shut as she leaned in. "someone like you.. Natsu," she pressed her lips against his.
Natsu's eyes widened, his body tensing up at the touch before his puffy eyes shut. He wrapped his arms around her, desperately clinging to her as he returned the kiss. It went on a full minute before they had to pull away for breath. "E-erza I-"
She put a finger over his lips, slight tears still trailing down her cheek as a bright smile crossed her lips. "Don't say anything Natsu, just let me fix this, okay?" Her voice was so soft and gentle it made Natsu melt. He acknowledged her request, resting his head against her chest.
Erza rested her forehead against his with a warm smile, her cheeks flushed, feeling his warmth that she desperately needed. "I see you, Natsu," she pressed kiss to the top of his head.
"And I never want you to leave my sight again."
"A-aye."
Gah, that was so fucking sweet I can barely contain myself. I get how some could make this out that Erza just jumped to Natsu because Jellal rejected her. I do understand how most would perceive it as that. But, Jellal was basically saying in that moment, stop clinging to the past and look forward to the future. Anyway, I do hope you enjoyed this one-shot and look forward to more! I'll see you all in the next one, laters. :)
