So, because there isn't enough of these two together on the internet, I'm putting together a oneshot collection.
Most of these will come from an internal universe I've built but never put to paper after I deleted an old journey fic off FFN which also contained Heartsoulshipping, the other oneshots I've written can be part of this universe if you so wish, I won't be contradicting them anywhere. There will be other ships within this collection, but Ethan and Lyra will be the focus.
This will be updated whenever I can find the time.
And lastly, there will be individual warnings within each oneshot if they so apply.
"Ugh… where is he?"
"Detention. Where else would he be?"
Lyra Jane Soul frowned as she leaned against the wall of her high school. Her friend, Kristina Perry stood with her as they waited for their final friend to complete their trio.
"What did he get detention for this time Kris?" Lyra asked with a sigh, bending down to give some attention to the Chikorita and Marill at her feet.
"I think Calvin was picking fights again," Kris said, "And you know who his favourite target is."
Lyra hummed in response, turning to the door again. This time, there was someone walking out. It was who they were waiting for, complete with backwards cap and his Cyndaquil and Aipom on opposite shoulders.
"About time," Kris said, but her tone was in jest.
Ethan Aubrey Gold gave Lyra a hug, before sharing a much shorter one with Kris. Lyra's face flushed and her chest soared. When Ethan moved to Kris, she quickly looked away from her friends until the heat in her cheeks died down.
"Calvin was on one today," Ethan huffed as his Aipom jumped down to the Pokémon that lay asleep by Kris' feet, a Sentret and a Hoppip, "No, Aibo!"
Ethan's Aipom was about to wake the two, and he looked back at Ethan with a frown.
"Nah, it's okay," Kris said, Aibo didn't require another invitation, "We need to get home anyway."
"Anyway," Ethan continued where he left off, "Calvin was just being a dick, he wouldn't leave me alone today. And when Cynder beat his Cyndaquil again today, he ran off crying to daddy like always. And he always gets away with it because his dad's the headteacher."
Lyra placed a hand on his shoulder, Ethan took a breath.
"He's completely incapable of letting me walk between lessons. Always trying to say shit about my dad and calling me short and a peasant."
Ethan's father had gone missing before he was born, last spotted going into the Ilex Forest. As such Ethan had grown up with his mother as his single parent, on her measly paycheck that only just struggled with the bills. Throughout their primary school years, Lyra's father had always packed her an extra sandwich to give to Ethan. Ethan knew his mother was trying her best, and would never complain about it to his friends.
Unfortunately for Ethan, he was also short. Standing at five feet and four inches compared to Calvin who was pushing six feet. Kris was also taller than him at five-six, but Lyra was shorter than him at five-one.
"You need to stop reacting though," Kris said, "He keeps getting a rise out of you, that's why he does it."
Lyra didn't say anything, she understood how Ethan felt. Her mother had passed away when she was a young girl and she could hardly remember her.
"It's not that easy though," Ethan sighed and they finally set off.
"It might rain soon," Lyra said as they walked through New Bark Town, dark clouds were gathering in the sky above them.
"Sorry," Ethan mumbled, knowing that they were only still outside because of him.
"I didn't mean anything by it!" Lyra quickly said, feeling a shot of guilt shoot through her at possibly harming his mood further.
Ethan gave her a small smile and nod and she felt her chest soar again.
Ethan and Lyra had been friends for as long as they could both remember, often joking that they had been friends from the womb. Their fathers were friends from university and Lyra's parents had moved to New Bark Town from Goldenrod City when Lyra's mother was still pregnant with her, mere months before Ethan's father had disappeared. Kris had moved to New Bark Town from Violet City when the trio were seven and Ethan and Lyra had accepted her into their group. Despite Ethan and Kris' tendency to argue, they had been friends for the eight years since.
"So are we going to Lyra's then?" Kris asked, Lyra lived the closest to where they currently were.
""Sure," Lyra said as the first drop of rain struck her on the nose, "We'd better speed up."
Cynder curled up in Ethan's hood with a squeak of annoyance at the starting rain and the three picked up their pace.
"Marina is loving it," Kris said as Lyra's Marill frolicked in front of them, "Flora and Hip-Hop seem to be happier too."
Lyra's Chikorita and Kris' Hoppip both seemed to have gained energy, in contrast to how they were lazing about earlier.
"They can enjoy it until we get home," Lyra frowned, "I don't quite fancy being soaked through."
As soon as the words left her mouth, the heavens opened. They sprinted the rest of the way to Lyra's house, dripping wet when they finally made it. Lyra ran to the bathroom to get them some towels to try and dry off enough to enter, her father poked his head out of the living room as they were towelling off.
"Good afternoon," he said, "Dinner for four tonight then Lyra?"
Lyra nodded, "Ethan and Kris are going to have to wait for their clothes to dry."
They ended up sat in her bedroom, all in various states of undress due to their wet clothes needing to dry. Cynder had curled up in front of the radiator that Ethan's shorts and cap, Kris' T-shirt and Lyra's shirt were draped over. The Fire-Type had been very uncomfortable in the rain and was appreciating the warmth. The Pokémon that had enjoyed the rain were still outside in the back garden so they could continue to enjoy it.
"Is this what you two watch when I'm not around?" Ethan asked, rolling his eyes at the reality show on the television. He was clad in just his T-shirt, boxer shorts and socks, his legs crossing over with Lyra's, who had put on one of her nighties over her knickers and was still wearing her thigh-high socks.
"Pretty much yeah," Kris shrugged, the show was about engaged couples, where the groom planned a wedding with no input from the bride at all, "A genius like Lyra needs to turn her brain off sometimes."
"Yeah, sure," Ethan scoffed, "But it's so predictable, he's going to do everything she hates but she'll love it anyway."
"It makes good background noise though," Lyra said, more focused on her notepad, "You can focus on something else instead."
Lyra was in the top set in every single one of her subjects, so she often received more homework than Ethan and Kris. This was alongside the three days each week that she'd help out at Professor Elm's Pokémon Laboratory. Ethan and Kris had taken to hanging out in Lyra's room when she was doing her inflated amount of homework or tagging along to Professor Elm's lab.
Ethan eventually got up to go to the toilet and Kris immediately rounded on Lyra.
"You," She said sharply, almost causing Lyra to jump at the serious tone, ""Why are you acting so strangely around him?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Lyra hissed, eyes widening at Kris' smirk.
"Yes, you do. The blushing and the turning away all the time."
"Shut up Kris."
"I don't believe it! You have a crush on him."
"I'm begging you to shut up Kris," Lyra's face flushed a deep red at being rumbled, she sank lower in her seat.
"I'm right though aren't I? You have a crush on your best friend?"
Lyra sighed and finally nodded.
"What are you going to do about it?"
Lyra glared at her, "Nothing. Are you insane?"
Kris's smirk disappeared, she suddenly had a look of pity on her face, "But Lyra, Ethan may be as dense as a post but he's going to notice you acting so weird around him. You're probably the only person he can read like a book."
Lyra threw her head back, not even wincing when it hit her bedroom wall, "I know, but I can't tell him, it could drive a wedge between us and I'd prefer us to just be… us."
Kris looked at the bedroom door, hearing Ethan's footsteps. She decided to wrap up the conversation with a final statement.
"Lyra, I think if you keep quiet, that'll drive a wedge between you instead."
Each morning, Ethan would wake up, get ready for school and then leave to knock on Kris' door, where they would then go to pick up Lyra and walk to school together.
"Kris," Lyra said as she opened the door, "Can I speak to you for a sec?"
"Sure," Kris replied, ascending the steps on the front porch.
"What's up?" Ethan asked, still munching on a slice of toast from his hasty exit from his own house.
"Nothing!" Lyra's voice became high-pitched and strained, "Just… period stuff."
Ethan quirked an eyebrow, but didn't say anything as Lyra dragged Kris inside.
"When you left last night," Lyra said quietly, "You didn't say anything to him did you."
Kris glared, "No, I didn't. And I'm a little offended you think I might."
Lyra sighed and looked at her guiltily, "Sorry. I just feel like I'm going crazy."
"Because you're hiding something from him. You never hide anything from him and now you're feeling bad about it."
Lyra looked like she was almost on the verge of crying, "I just don't know what I'm supposed to do."
"Tell him," Kris urged, taking Lyra by both shoulders, "Lyra, if you really like him… in fact, at least in a platonic sense, you definitely love him. He deserves your honesty."
"I know," Lyra took a deep breath to try and calm herself down, "I just need time to get myself ready."
"Everything okay?" Ethan asked as they stepped out.
"Everything's fine," Kris said, not even stopping to wait, "C'mon let's go. C'mon Scout."
Her Sentret leapt up onto her shoulder. Ethan looked quizzically back at Lyra but she didn't meet his eyes as she walked past him.
This continued for a week, Lyra getting progressively more distant throughout the week. Eventually Ethan had enough, and one day, when they were walking home from school, he finally snapped.
"Okay, what's going on between you two?" he asked forcefully, "You two have been acting so weird!"
"Don't worry about it," Kris said, "There's nothing going on."
"Don't give me that!" Ethan said angrily, "You're hiding something from me!"
Kris and Lyra shared a look before Kris kept trying to placate him, "Ethan, I promise you it isn't important."
"Bullshit," he growled, "If it wasn't important, you wouldn't be trying to keep it from me."
Kris' attempts to placate Ethan turned into an argument that quickly escalated.
"Something's not right. I can tell because Lyra tells me everything."
"Well maybe this time she doesn't want to tell you Ethan!" Kris shrieked, making Lyra wince.
Ethan whirled around to her, a wounded look on his face. When she didn't answer immediately, the anger in his face dissipated and he just looked hurt.
"Okay, fine," he said, his tone clipped. He turned on his heel and walked away, "Cynder, Aibo!"
His Cyndaquil and Aipom followed, both right behind his heels.
Lyra and Kris shared another look, Kris mouthed at her, I'm sorry.
"Ethan! Wait!" Lyra shouted, taking off to run after him.
He hadn't gotten very far. When she caught him she grabbed his hand but he whipped it away.
"You're right," she said, "I have been hiding something from you. I just wasn't ready to tell you yet."
Ethan turned to face her, "You've never had an issue telling me anything before. The way you're hiding this from me makes me feel like I've done something wrong."
Lyra took his hand again. This time, he didn't pull it away, "I promise you haven't."
"I'm sorry," he said, "I don't want to force you to tell me if you aren't ready."
She shook her head, "No, you deserve to know."
She took a deep breath, "I like you."
"Lyra…"
"And I didn't want to tell you. Because, you're my best friend. You're so important to me that I'd rather keep it in and keep you in my life than tell you and tear us apart. But, I'm doing that anyway by not telling you. Ethan, I just want us to be like we always have."
His face softened, "Lyra, I don't think we can go back to being friends."
Her heart sank.
"Because I like you too."
For the first time in a week, her brown eyes met his golden ones, "Since when?"
"A while. I thought it would go away if I left it alone, but if anything, I've just liked you more."
Lyra hugged him, she grabbed him tight and felt like she would never let him go.
"Lyra, I don't want to go back to being friends. Not now that we both know that we like each other."
"I just don't want to ruin things between us," she said into his chest.
"Lyra, our relationship was always going to evolve in some way. Whether we get together or not, things will change between us in some way. We can still just be us, maybe just with more kissing and stuff."
Lyra snorted, the tension finally breaking, "And stuff?"
Ethan nodded, "So if we both like each other, why don't we take the plunge together?"
"Okay," Lyra said, a smile breaking onto her face and a fluttering feeling in her stomach, "You've convinced me."
The two settled back into a hug. Meanwhile, Kris was watching from just in earshot.
"Well," she said, turning to her Pokémon, "Looks like I'm the third wheel from now on."
