The story is entirely fictional.

Characters may look and act different than they do in real life. This was done intentionally, and things will change over time in this story, so please be patient.

Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 1: Paradise no More by Jurassicfatt

Allie's Pov, French Polynesia (Tahiti), March

Tahiti, the most boring vacation I've ever been on. Most people would call me crazy for saying such a thing, but I bet they haven't been stuck at a resort like I have the past 4 days. I grew up and lived most of my life through harsh winters and somewhat cool summers in Toronto, Canada. I've only travelled to the U.S. a couple of times, so when my boyfriend Braxton asked me to go with him to Tahiti, I was very excited. Braxton is a businessman working at GP Capital, so he doesn't get many days off. I own a business. A pastry shop called 'the Choco Bunny', right in the heart of Downtown Toronto. It's just me and two other ladies who work there, and we serve loads of customers. And I mean a lot. People will go to Tim's or some other café for coffee, then go straight to the Choco Bunny for their morning pastry. The workload for me can be quite intense. A lot of people doubted me when I first started out, but I always manage, even if Braxton thinks my business will tank soon. He can be a real douche sometimes.

I've been with him for a year and some, but he's grown distant over the past months. Leaving early, coming home late. I only get to see him on the weekends, where he mostly checks out the stock market and sleeps. My friends warned me something like this might happen when I started seeing him. We first met at my shop. He was wearing a three-piece silver suit with a white shirt and dark blue tie. His beard was light-brown then, and he had dark blue eyes. He was looking for a bagel and coffee to go before leaving for a big meeting. I gave him a Guatemalan blend and a homemade cheddar/asiago bagel and boy did it get his attention. He came by the next day to ask me out. I hadn't dated much since my last boyfriend left me a few years back, so I said yes. We've been dating since then. My friends were concerned when they first met him. They'd say something along the lines of 'He only cares about making money and showing off', or 'you are too nice to see what a dick he is'. Of course, I didn't believe them then, but now I see what they meant.

When Braxton surprised me with this trip, he told me he was trying to make up for the past few months. He told me that we were going on a 'two-week romantic getaway' to Tahiti and that we'd spend the whole trip together. Little did I know that meant getting stuck in a room, going with him to the casino every day, and watching him flirt with every waitress who brings him a bourbon and gamble at the blackjack/poker tables. Of course, whenever he loses it's my fault for 'giving off bad vibes'. Don't get me wrong, the hotel is nice and all, but I'm not allowed to leave the room in case 'some guy tries to hit on me'. This trip hasn't been what I imagined it. I haven't been in the ocean since I got here, but today that's going to change. Braxton said he's booked a scuba diving expedition for the two of us this morning, and that tonight, we'll be dining at a fancy restaurant. He left to speak with the captain and told me to meet him in the lobby in 20 minutes. I decided to wear a white one-piece bathing suit with black shades and flips-flops. Hopefully it'll get his attention.

Seeing that 15 minutes have passed, I leave our room and make my way downstairs. As I arrive, I see Braxton waiting for me on a lounge chair. He has a pair of red swim trunks and a white button-up shirt with a pair of aviators. He smiles and begins walking towards me.

"Hey doll, ready to go?" he asks me in his raspy voice.

"Yeah I'm ready! Where's the captain?" I ask.

"Follow me doll." Braxton answers. We exit the hotel and make our way over to a pier loaded with locals and tourists of all kinds, from families to couples and travel groups. The pier was filled with cruise ships, scuba diving charters, shark cage trips and yachts. We make our way over to the right of the pier before Braxton exclaims "Here it is doll! Fallah, over here!" and what I see makes me speechless. In front of me was a small-medium sized fishing boat. Instead of pristine white or silver like the other charters, or even a simple blue like most other wooden fishing boats, this one was a dull gray with large patches of rust all over it. The engine looks old and has a large hole, big enough to see the gears inside. On the side of the boat, in faded turquoise and red paint, were the words "Fallah's scuba adventure". In the boat was a large man, with long black hair tied in a bun. He resembles a sumo wrestler, given his sheer size and weight. He wears a Hawaiian style shirt and green shorts with flips-flops. On his shirt was a nametag which said "Fallah Bahh". Braxton shakes hands with the man before turning to me.

"So, doll, what do you think?" he asked.

"Um, Braxton, I'm not so sure we should do this." I hesitantly answer, eyeing the boat and its large captain.

"Come on doll. I've booked us the charter for the day, so it shouldn't go to waste. Fallah's going to bring us to a more secluded part, where there's even underwater caves with air pockets we can surface in. No pesky tourists will bother us, either. Come on, today's supposed to be about us..." he pleads to me. Well, the scuba tanks and masks on the boat looked pretty new.

"Ok." I finally give in.

"Great! Then let's go!" he proclaims. Braxton got in the boat first, and then Fallah helps me aboard. He then starts the engine and we were on our way. Fallah was actually pretty nice. He explained that he was from the Philippines, but fell in love with this island on a trip and moved here 9 years ago. He told me "When the wata calm and the sun shining, Bahh be working." He even packed us food for the wait: this sugary Tahitian donut called Firi Firi, which looked like figure 8's. I took one bite and the taste of sugar and coconut filled my taste buds. It was firmer than a normal donut, but I found it tasty, unlike Braxton who almost choked on it. I asked Bahh for a recipe, but he said I'd have to ask the vendor he bought them from. Braxton, who had been staring into space, abruptly turns to face Fallah.

"So, my man Fallah, you're a businessman and you've been here a while. You ever hear of the legend of the Jade Jewel? The one that shines in an underwater cave?" he asks. Fallah's smiley face turns fearful almost instantaneously.

"Is very bad news. Many men go missing looking for jewel." Fallah answers. I could tell the very mention of it had changed his mood entirely. Wait, has this whole 'romantic excursion' just been a cover for Braxton to go looking for some stupid trinket?

"Braxton, you didn't book this trip so we could find the jewel, did you?" I almost shout.

"No way doll! I booked it for us. The jewel is just a side feature, that's all." Braxton answers. I'm not buying it. Just another important thing for Braxton to do and not tell me about. A few moments later, we finally reach our destination. The water was a beautiful turquoise and has a few rocks sticking out of it, with very little plant life growing on them. Braxton and I put on our blue and yellow scuba tanks and facemasks before Braxton leaves the boat. Fallah helps me into the water, but warns us:

"The jewel is cursed by spirits. Very bad news. You find jewel, no come back. Bad fo' business." I thank Fallah and told him we'd meet him in an hour or so. Braxton and I slowly start to swim underwater. There are so many different types of exotic fish here! You couldn't turn your head without catching something beautiful in your sights. At the edge of the reef, Braxton and I found the opening to what appeared to be a cave. He motions me to follow him. We swim slowly upwards into the mouth of the cave. The water was calmer here, but much cooler, and an uneasy feeling overcame me as we swam deeper into it. Before I knew it, Braxton and I had surfaced into an air pocket. There was a small pool of water with multiple rock formations, flat enough for us to swim to and lean on. We take off our masks and scuba tanks, leaving them leaning on the largest rock formation while we take a minute to rest. I look around the cave and see brilliant purplish-blue gemstones. A few minutes later, Braxton pulls out a flashlight from the pocket of his swim trunks.

"Bahh was hiding something. That overgrown stump knew the jewel was valuable, just doesn't want us to find it." Braxton proclaims. He then begins going to other rocks and shining light on the gemstones, hoping to find the jewel. He turns to me, "Do you see it?"

"No Braxton, I don't." I answered coldly. "Why is this so important? I thought today was going to be about us?"

"Doll, listen, I've been crunching numbers and still Donavan's making more money than I am. The partners are impressed because he started wearing this ruby ring his grandfather owned. They're saying he's up for promotion. If I want to make it to the big leagues, become a major partner, I need something to make the ring look cheap. Plus, with the extra dough I make, we can have a dream wedding and you can sell that useless shop you have." Oh, how romantic of you! I love that shop! I worked hard to get my business license! Regardless of all the times Braxton was absent, that shop was the one constant in my life. A place where I truly felt happy. Yet all he does is insult and belittle it like it's nothing. On another less serious note, I'm not interested in dream weddings in the slightest. Maybe after this I can go find a nice bird watching tour and leave him at the resort for a change. Braxton shines his flashlight on me before saying "Help me find it."
"Look for it yourself! I don't care about dream weddings or your stupid promotion. I came here to spend time with you on vacation, not to watch you gamble, drink and search for a stupid trinket!" I shout. He simply scowls before continuing his search. Not wanting to watch him any longer, I get up from the rock I was leaning on and swim to another one towards the middle of the cave. As I put my arms on the rock to steady myself, my eyes catch something. A weird shaped object jutting out of the rock. Hesitantly, I grab the object, which easily comes out of its resting place. In my hand is a dark greenish colored rock. It is circular on the bottom and has three sharp edges at the top. It's actually quite beautiful, in a way. This must be...the Jade Jewel! I found it? But I wasn't even looking for it? Before I had a chance to react, Braxton had already come to my side and swiped it from me.

"Ha! We found the it! Great work doll." he all but cheered. I turn to face him.

"Braxton, remember what Fallah sa-"

"Screw him, the jewel's mine now!" he said before laughing gleefully. So much for 'we'. His laughter suddenly stops as he looks past me. His eyes are wide and his face goes pale. I turn around and freeze in place. On another rock near the far side of the cave was a man, standing upright and looking straight at us. He is incredibly tall, hunched over from his immense stature. He has long arms and his long curly fingers are stained red. His skin is white like milk, and he wears a red cloak like that of a king. Where did he come from? His eyes were fixated on the jewel as he murmured one word, his voice like nails on a blackboard: "Mine."

Braxton's eyes moved towards the object in his hand before whispering to me, "On the count of three, we make a break for the tanks. Ready, one, two-" Suddenly Braxton pushes me in the tall man's direction before swimming quickly towards our tanks. You rat bastard! Before I could even react, the tall man leaps toward the rock where Braxton had swum to, stabbing one scuba tank with his long pointy fingers. The air escapes it is a soft whizzing sound. He then pulls Braxton out of the water by his left arm, holding him while his other hand plucks the jewel from his grasp. The tall man smiles, his yellow and slightly pointed teeth showing.

"Let me go man, please! You want the jewel, it's yours, just let me get out of here!" Braxton pleads, wiggling in his grip. The tall man looks curiously to Braxton's face. "You want money? Is that it? I can give you 12000$ cash if you let me go. I can deposit more into your account if need be. I'll even throw in my Lamborghini. Come on man, let me go!" But the tall man continues to simply look at Braxton. He then puts the jewel in his cloak, and places his left hand on Braxton's right shoulder. I could see Braxton wincing as the man's long fingers touch his skin. Then, the tall man pulls Braxton's left arm towards him, separating his shoulder with a loud POP! sound. Braxton cries out in agony, and then the tall man throws Braxton at the far wall as hard as he can. Braxton's body bounces against the rock wall, a thick Crunch echoing throughout the cave as he collides with it, before he drops into the water. The water turns crimson as Braxton's lifeless body slowly floats to the top. Oh my god! He's dead! And I didn't do anything to stop him! The tall man then leaps to the rock near me and stares downward. He put his hand towards me, evidently trying to grab my arm. Before I could think, instinct took over. I beat his hand away and swim as fast as I can to the other tank. Unfortunately, it was in vain. I feel a large hand grab my foot and yank me out of the water. I try kicking his arm to get free, but it has no effect. Held upside down by the tall man, I could see the yellow untrimmed nails of his toes sticking out from the bottom of his cloak. He eyes me up and down from toe to head before speaking, "The jewel is priceless, but you will fetch a mighty price at the flesh market. You may want to become less combative, lest I sell you to a torture fiend." He then chants something in an unknown guttural language, before a blood red portal opens under his feet. The tall man slowly sinks into the red gelatinous like circle and I scream for help, hoping someone might hear me. I try grabbing the rock, but my hands can't get a grip on it and I plunge into the portal, screaming in terror as I am pulled into it.

To be continued!

A/N: So, Allie's in trouble! Can she escape this disgusting sorcerer? And what horrors lie wherever he is taking her? Might be a little bit before I can update again (all the more reason to keep you in suspense!). I hope you enjoyed this new chapter. Please do review if you can. It shows me that people enjoy my stories, which is always nice. Thanks again for reading and have a great day!
