Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 4: Breakfast with Allie by Jurassicfatt
Rosemary's Pov, Kaduran City, Morning
Well, that night was less than restful. It took me quite a while just to get to sleep, my thoughts constantly lingering on... her. Why do I feel so strange when I'm near her? What is it about this woman? Is it pity? Gratefulness? Fear?
I think the word you are looking for is 'attraction', the teasing voice remarks. You couldn't look in her eyes for how starstruck you were. You felt that spark when she was touching your hand yesterday, didn't you? How you yearn to feel more of her body beneath your fingert-ENOUGH! *Sigh* I've got to get a grip. As I walk away from my bed, the scent of delicious cooking fills my nose. My stomach grumbles in anticipation. I walk slowly downstairs, seeing Caretaker carefully place a hot tray down on the table. Really going all out today, huh? I walk into the main room and see Allie, still blissfully sleeping on the couch.
I can't help the small smile that comes to my lips. She's curled on her left side, snoring softly into the couch cushions. Her hair all over the place, yet she looks peaceful and worry free. When she wakes up, her thoughts will be firmly on being stuck in this Realm and the fear that sorcerer inflicted on her. I meant it when I said I wouldn't let him touch her again. I won't let him get anywhere near her. I'll rip his throat out and feed it to the hellhounds before I let something happen to her. I've never felt this way about another female before. Why am I so protective over her?
Don't play coy, the teasing voice reasserts itself. No! I will not listen to this ridiculous nonsense. I-It's my duty, that's all. To protect all Realmers and demons from those who would do them harm. I hear her stir on the couch. As I look down, I am graced by her big blue eyes looking up at me. I blush, wondering how long I must have been staring at her and if she had seen me doing so.
"Hey." I say to her, waving like an idiot. Smooth.
"Hey. How did you sleep?" she asks, rubbing her eyes.
"Not too bad." Liar. "What about you?"
"Okay I guess." she speaks. Is she still sad? Of course she is, you dunce! Her entire life is over thanks to that scumbag. She begins looking around the room. "Is someone cooking?"
"Caretaker is. He's making us quite a spread." I answer.
"Oh great, because I'm starving! I haven't eaten since... the boat..." she states sadly. Her thoughts must be on her boyfriend Braxton. I don't know how she can feel so sorry for him. His greed is what prompted him to look for the jewel. And when he had the choice between greed and his love, he pushed his own girlfriend towards that sorcerer in order to save his own life. If he was still alive, I'd deck him in the face right now! Tearing the sheets off herself, I see she's still wearing that weird garment showing off her luscious curves... Why do I keep doing that?
You know why. the teasing voice responds.
Shut up! the scolding voice rebuttals. Focus on the task at hand!
Yeah, which should be getting her out of those clot-No! Focus on the task at hand. Focus on the task at hand. Focus.
I see Allie lift herself off the couch, but she gets up too quickly, causing her to lose her balance. I swiftly catch her and pull her close to me, my right arm full wrapped around her mid-section and our faces only inches apart. She stares up at me again.
"You alright?" I ask. She nods her head and I get lost looking into her eyes.
"Ahem, I hope I'm not intruding," Caretaker speaks up, holding a plate of freshly made buns in his hands, "but I wanted to let you know that breakfast is ready." Both of us separate instantly, blushing. What is with me? We make our way to the mess. A wooden table with some antique chairs, a large black cauldron and rock surface for cooking, and a small window.
"I hope you are hungry, my dear. I've cooked some specialties for today's first meal." Caretaker remarks. He wasn't kidding. On the table were 12 honey covered Tartirician style bread buns, a pitcher of grape juice, 4 massive Harpy egg omelets with onion, some sort of cheese, mixed fruit salad and a basket of freshly cut figs.
"You made so much food for us, thank you Caretaker." Allie says, then noticing the blue colored omelets. "Um, can I ask what this is?" she inquires, pointing at one plate of large omelets.
"Harpy omelets. Don't worry, they are meant to be that color." Caretaker points out. Allie looked like she was debating whether to eat it or not. "What's the matter? I hope I haven't overcooked them."
"No, no, they look delicious. It's just, well, I'm a vegetarian." she explains, looking between the both of us.
"Oh my goodness, I've already insulted her. I'm sorry." Caretaker says, grabbing the plate and getting ready to toss it. Allie grabs him by the arm, stopping Caretaker in his tracks.
"No no! It's okay. I don't mind if you guys eat them. I may be a vegetarian, but I'm not going to look or treat you any different if you aren't. I'd never force people to live the way I do. Plus, this is your house, and I'm your guest. You obviously put a lot of work into this meal, and I appreciate everything you've done for me. So please, don't toss these." Allie argues, motioning to the plate. Caretaker looks at the plate, then gives her a nod and places it back on the table. The three of us take our seats. Caretaker gives us plates and utensils, and we all start to dig in. Allie's stomach growls before she finally picks up a Tartirician bun and takes a bite. Closing her eyes, she moans in delight.
You like hearing that, don't you? the little voice teases again. Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, now focus on the task at hand: eating. Grabbing one of the circular buns and biting down, my mouth was filled with the sweet taste of honey. Allie must have liked them too, as she had finished her first and was moving onto two more.
"Wow Caretaker, these are really good. Is this part of the, um, Tar-, Tartir-, your peoples' cuisine?" Allie asks.
"Tartirician. And yes, it is. Many find it bland but I grew up on it, so it reminds me of home." Caretaker answers.
"Well, I for one think they are really good." Allie speaks honestly, before taking another forkful of her cut fruit. Caretaker smiles in gratitude before doing the same. Allie explained to him she owned a pastry shop back on Earth and asked him for the recipe for the buns. He agreed to teach her the recipe at a later date. Before we knew it, we were done. Caretaker packs up the leftover eggs, buns and figs for later, and Allie asks what everyone would be up to today.
"Well, I'm going to meet with an acquaintance of mine, see if I can find information on the jewel you found." Caretaker explains. "Since Rosemary isn't on an assignment, how would you like her to take you on a tour of Kaduran city?"
Oh no! Why would he say that? A whole day in Kaduran with her! I'll have to watch for every pickpocket and scumbag in town. You need to protect her, remember? the scolding voice asserts. She's new here, and she should at least be shown where to buy food and clothing.
Don't act like that's the reason. You know you want to spend the rest of the day, walking around town with her nestled to your side... Focus on the task at hand.
"I don't know if that's such a good idea. I don't want to be a burden to her." Allie says. I feel my heart drop instantly at the tone of her voice. Is she afraid of me? She did see you tear those demons apart, so that's probably a yes.
"Nonsense. She's on break. She can show you some sights around the city, and teach you of our history at the Hall of Assassins." Caretaker argues.
"Well... if she really doesn't mind." Allie says apprehensively, biting her lip and looking in my direction. My eyes focus on her lips. Full and pouting, I wonder how they would feel against m-MOVING ON! I turn to her and nod my head. Allie smiles at me, then turns back to him.
"Hey Caretaker, do you have any spare clothes I can borrow? I don't know how comfortable I feel going out in public in my swimsuit." Allie confides.
"Of course. I'm sure Rosemary will have something you can borrow. You go wait in the bathroom, it's on the left past the doorway, and I'll go get some for you." Caretaker tells her. Allie thanks him for the meal again and walks out of the kitchen. As I watch her leave, Caretaker stands up, before turning to me and grinning.
"Why did you have to do that? I'm not a guide! It's one of my only days off this month and I have to spend it protecting her from pickpockets, thieves and slavers!" I point out to him, wondering why he would offer such a thing in the first place.
"It'll be good for the girl to go out and get her mind off the traumatic events she's seen. I need some time to meet with my contact. And you and I both know you aren't as opposed to this as you say." Caretaker remarks to me.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I question. Caretaker places the plates in the cauldron.
"Rosemary, I may be over 300 years old, but I'm not naïve. You haven't stopped looking at her since she got here. And you made sure she knew as long as she stayed here, you would protect her."
"What are you trying to insinuate?"
"I'm not insinuating anything. It's just good to see you interested in something other than your work." Caretaker then turns around, and tells me to wait outside while Allie gets ready. I grab my jacket and head towards the front entrance.
Somehow, I think today is going to be a long day.
A/N: Hello again. A bit of a shorter chapter, but I hope you enjoyed. Please do review if you can. It shows me people like my stories, which is always nice. Thanks again for reading and have a great day!
