Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 5: Learning with the Assassin by Jurassicfatt

Allie's Pov, Kaduran City, Late Morning

If someone would have told me I'd be getting a spare set of clothes from a three-eyed demon with sharp teeth, on an alternate Earth, in a different dimension, I'd have told them they watch too many sci-fi movies. Yet here I am, having been given a t-shirt, jeans and flat-toed shoes from Caretaker. He has been so nice to me. Nicer than anyone has ever treated me upon first impressions. I feel almost guilty for receiving such kindness without doing anything back in return. Maybe I can help tidy up around here or something. I wash up before putting on the clothes. Rosemary's shirt is slightly large on me, but that's to be expected since she has a larger chest than I do.

Why did I just say that? What is the matter with me? Two days ago, I was in Tahiti, eating island cuisine and going scuba diving. Now I'm in someplace called the 'Undead Realm', spending my time thinking about a woman I just met. I'm not even a lesbian. Sure, I kissed a girl back in high school, but we both agreed we weren't interested and we went our separate ways. I dated a few guys who were jerks before focusing on my career and my shop. A few years later, I met Braxton… I feel the guilt start swelling in my chest again. These weird thoughts I've had about Rosemary aren't helping. Rosemary is just... different. She's unlike anyone I've ever met before.

When she promised to not let that sorcerer get to me, I couldn't help but feel tingly inside. I got that same feeling earlier when she caught me from falling. Looking into her misty blue eyes made my heart skip a beat. When our faces were only inches apart, I wondered for a brief second how her lips would taste... How weird is that? As if the past few days weren't confusing enough. I'm probably just thankful for her saving me from that sorcerer back in the forest. Nothing more.

Taking a look one last time in the mirror, I straighten my hair out, then exit the bathroom. I say goodbye to Caretaker and go outside to meet up with Rosemary. Around Caretaker's house are different buildings of similar size, all made of some weird orange stone, with symbols on their doors. I see Rosemary standing outside with her purple leather jacket. Her hair is flowing in the wind, looking so soft and luscious... Where did that come from? Really got to stop doing that.

"Ready to go?" she asks, a bit jumpy.

"Yeah. You?" I ask.

"S-sure." she says quickly, walking up the pathway to a large market place. Vendors fill the streets, most of them looking human, give or take six limbs. "This is the city's central market. You can find pretty much anything here. Food, clothing, weapons. You name it, they sell it." As we walk around, I see a large horned man with bright red skin and bulging muscles carrying a small woman in a pink dress. The two were kissing as a group of demons shouted and cheered.

"Looks like a wedding just finished." Rosemary remarks.

"They hold weddings at the market?" I say in disbelief.

"Like I said, you name it, they sell it. Marriage licenses included." We walk until we reach a little cafe called 'Bronco borash'. Rosemary told me she'd pay for us. I hope I can find work soon, that way I can pay her back. I decide to get an ice water. It's quite hot out today. I don't know how she doesn't feel it in that jacket. My mind envisions Rosemary removing it, the sweat from her neck going down her chest to her exposed... I shake my head. I need to focus on learning more about where I am.

"Can I ask you a few questions?" I ask politely.

"Yeah, of course." Rosemary responds.

"On Earth, demons are portrayed as scary and evil. Yet here, some of them are sort of nonchalant towards us. Some are really nice, like Caretaker. And now, I see they even marry humans. How can that be?" I ask.

"Okay, so remember how Caretaker explained the portal connecting the two Earths?" Rosemary asks. I nod my head. "Thousands of years ago, portals opened around your Earth, and many humans ended up going through them, becoming stranded in the Undead Realm. Many died due to starvation or being killed off by demons and disease, but some were able to survive and prosper. Wheat, barley and many fruits, vegetables and animals like ones on Earth, as well as other useful ores and items, are present in the Undead Realm. Humans began to harvest and farm them, growing their resources. Those who survived were called 'Realmers' by the demons. Some humans fought the demons, but others saw that not all of them were necessarily evil. Many were just afraid of the Realmers because they were the unknown. Trade started shortly after the first villages were built. Human population increased. They began dispersing and building villages nearby demon homesteads and outposts. Knowledge and culture, like dark magic, architecture, food, sport, music and so on, began being exchanged. Eventually, humans and many species of demon simply learned to live together. It's not perfect, but most don't really give the other a hard time."

"What about those Warlord demons you've mentioned before? I assume they aren't the friendly type?"

"You'd be correct. You see, most species of demons are similar to Realmers, both in stature and physiology. They may eat different things, have more eyes, limbs or teeth, and practice unique customs, but there aren't that many differences. Warlord demons are much more like the scary and evil ones you've heard of. They possess strength and speed that far outmatches any Realmer. Many are more beast than demon. Some have magical powers. Others are massive in size, but there are plenty of Warlord demons our size or smaller, yet just as dangerous. Warlord demons are a greedy and disgusting bunch, constantly battling each other for control over territory in the Undead Realm." Rosemary then pulls out an atlas entitled "The Undead Realm: Warlord demon catalogue". It looks like some sort of tablet, if it was made of glowing red rock.

On the atlas, most of Asia and Africa were present, but parts of Russia and Southern Africa weren't on the map. Australia and Europe simply don't exist, being replaced by medium-sized square continents. North America was an actual circle, minus one piece, almost like someone had cut a pizza slice out of the South-East. Towards the center, I could see a yellow dot marked Kaduran. So that's where we are. South America was replaced by multiple island chains, many of which were small and oddly shaped. On the map were numerous blinking red dots, mostly in the North American, Asian and African continents. There were so many, and they overlapped in many regions, some areas completely covered in red.

"You see those red blinking dots? Those are Warlord demons." Rosemary points out. I go wide-eyed and look directly at her.

"How many are there?" Rosemary takes a moment.

"800 million, give or take a few. The population of Realmers is about 3-4 billion. Demons are 6 billion, and they make up part of that statistic. About 10% of them are dormant, waiting to wake up and terrorize the Realmers. Few are actually nice, trying to defend their territories and protect their citizens. They range between 5-6%. The other 84-85% are currently waging war, plotting to gain power over the others, doing nothing or simply attacking Realmers. There tends to be a very high death count for Realmers, hence why we don't have accurate population numbers."

"Isn't there anyone to stop them?" I ask, shocked to the holy hell. What a horrible world to live on!

"Many fight between themselves. They grow fast and die young, never really becoming a bother to Realmers and other demons. If they do make it past a certain age, or threaten the cities and villages, demon assassins are sent in to seek and destroy them." Rosemary answers. Well, that answers that, but also makes me have more questions.

"What do demon assassins look like?"

"Demon assassins come in all shapes and sizes. Both demons and Realmers can be trained to become assassins, but it is a dangerous life with few holidays. I should know, I'm one of them." Rosemary explains to me.

"You're a demon assassin?" Rosemary simply nods her head. Now that I think of it, it makes perfect sense. It explains why she carries a hook and chain, why she was so willing to help me, and also how she made quick work of the demons during their fight.

"You said assassins get trained to fight Warlord demons. Where?" I question.

"At academies. There, they teach you how to hunt and kill Warlord demons and their minions. There is at least one school in every region of the world. The one I went to is called The Hive, but there are others, such as Arihota, Kukostag, Gibralta, The Northern Heights, Magdera, etc. The ones I mentioned were the original six, but there are about a dozen now." Rosemary tells me. "Any other questions?" I feel like we've been here long enough, so I shake my head. I can always ask more questions later. Rosemary gets up, leaving three silver coins on the table. "Follow me. I think the Hall should be opening soon."

Rosemary and I walk through the various shops and venues at the market, on our way to the Hall of Assassins. Many vendors try selling us clothes, weapons, spices, alcohol, even men and women for "various purposes". Many of them were tied down or forced to stand one next to the other and pose, like mannequins in a store front window. Rosemary told me that we had just passed the flesh market. I thank my lucky stars she saved me.

"I'm so glad I didn't end up there." I say out loud. I ask about where she came from and how the academy was. She told me she was born in Kaduran and sold as a slave. One day, she was bought by a slaver, who made her carry bags all the way to the North. The cold was so bad, that she fell unconscious and he became angry, leaving her there to die. An assassin was walking by and saved her. He took her to the Hive with him. They healed her and eventually, admitted her into the academy, on the assassin's recommendation.

"I met Caretaker on an assignment 6 years back, saving him from a large venomous beast Warlord. He thanked me, and asked if he could repay me. I told him I was looking for somewhere to live, and he offered his guest room upstairs. That's been my home ever since."

I keep in stride with her, trying not to fall behind, as I don't want to get lost in the sea of people at the market. Plus, if I do fall behind, I keep involuntarily staring at her ass. I look away immediately and end up blushing like a school girl. God, this is annoying. Up ahead, I see a large red temple with many couples and families walking inside. This must be the Hall of Assassins. We go inside and walk down a flight of stairs into a large chamber. At the front of the chamber is a plaque in multiple languages, including English, which reads "The Catacombs. Memorial to the Assassins". Rosemary explains that the plaque changes the language of the sign to the mother tongues of all those present. That's actually pretty cool! The chamber has a high ceiling, with large red and yellow triangular chandeliers, which give a soft orange glow to the room. On the right and left sides are large copper murals, with pictures and names of assassins who have died while fighting Warlord demons.

On the far-side wall are 9 large statues, all depicting a different assassin. This area is called the 'Memorial to the Elite Ones', who are assassins commemorated for their incredible accomplishments. The two of us walk towards each one, reading the name and the plaques beside them. Rosemary lingers on one named "The Monster Abyss". The statue is that of a large man with long hair, wearing a vest and t-shirt, his right hand in a fist, and his left forward in a grabbing motion. On his face is a mask which covers his nose, cheeks and left forehead, but has a hole for his left eye to see through. He was ugly and downright scary to look at.

"This is one of my professors. He still trains new assassins at my old academy, now." she discloses to me. How could someone like that train Rosemary? He looks so menacing and dangerous, while she is so kind and beautiful and curv- Stop it! Just take in the sights.

As I look at them all, I notice the statue in the middle is larger than the rest. It was also made of a shiny black rock material, instead of red clay. The statue was that of a large man, wearing what looked like wrestling boots, a leather jacket going all the way down to his ankles, a pair of padded pants, a tank top which showed off his neck and upper chest, and a large oversized black rim hat on his head. He has long hair and a stubble goatee. His face has a stern look, his eyes fixated in front of him. On his hands were fingerless gloves, and he holds the handle of a shovel buried deep into the ground. A symbol of a large capital T, with two stakes on either side of it, was directly below the statue. The plaque in front read the words: "God among assassins. Defender of Realmers. Hunter of Warlords. Behold the Deadman! The Undertaker." It also explains how he and his brother Kane protected Magdera academy from three beast Warlord Demons and an army of 3500 demon troops. As I was reading the plaque, Rosemary grabs my hand and pulls me aside. Everyone around us does the same. A group of hooded figures comes in carrying torches, singing what sounds like a Latin church theme. They walk slowly to the statue. Rosemary comes close to me and I feel my heart beat rapidly in my chest.

"The Undertaker has been missing for some time, ever since he lost a battle against a massive beast Warlord in the East. These druids perform this ceremony every day, hoping he'll return one day to rid the world of that Warlord, and protect the Realmers again." Rosemary explains to me. I began to realize that we are still holding hands. Rosemary looks down and let's go. We both blush before she tells me to follow her, since it'll be getting dark soon. I have to admit... it felt kind of nice holding her hand back there.

Snap out of it! a voice in my head says to me. Rosemary isn't interested. She's a big-time demon assassin. She doesn't have time for you. Not that you are interested. You're not into women! So stick to staying alive!

We slowly make our way past the market and back to Caretaker's home. Rosemary calls out to him, but there's no answer.

"He must still be with his contact." Rosemary asserts. "I'm going to go upstairs and work off that bun I ate this morning. I'll be done by the time Caretaker comes back." She begins going towards the stairwell.

"Wait, Rosemary!" I say all too loudly. I feel my heart beat quickens as she turns and walks back over to me. "Thanks for teaching me about the Undead Realm, and s-showing me around the markets and the Hall of Assassins. I-I enjoyed it."

"No problem," she says. "Let me know if you need anything." She then turns and walks upstairs. My eyes almost instantly stare at her behind while she walks away. Stop! What is with you? Haven't you realized th-

My thoughts are interrupted as Caretaker opens the door, a sad expression on his face. He closes the door, and I hear Rosemary race downstairs.

"Caretaker, you're back." Rosemary says before noticing his expression. "What's wrong?" He rubs a hand over his face, then looks at me.

"Allie, were you telling me the truth when you said you found the Jade Jewel in the rock, and were the first to pull it from there?" Caretaker asks, his tone serious and to the point.

"Yes, I did. Why?" I answer.

"Rosemary, I need to speak to you. In private." Caretaker tells her.

"Caretaker, what is this about? What did your contact tell you?" Rosemary asks impatiently.

"In private." he tells her again.

"Why?" Rosemary asks.

"In private. I will not say so again." Caretaker says for a third time, beginning to walk towards the kitchen.

"Hey, wait a second." I tell him, walking up and grabbing his shoulder. "You can't just tell Rosemary the news. Especially considering it concerns me personally. I want know what you've learned."
"Allie, please. The news is troubling and you've already been through enough. Please wait here while Rosemary and I speak-"

"No!" I scream out, causing Rosemary to look at me with her jaw dropped. "I want to know. I have a right to know. I don't care if it has something do to with that sorcerer. I need to know what you found out from your contact about the jewel. Please." I tell him, looking straight in his eyes. He sighs.

"Alright. That sorcerer wasn't telling you the truth about selling you to the flesh market." he tells me.

"What? But he said I would be 'worth' something there. If he wasn't taking me to the market to sell me, what was he taking me for?"

"To... To sacrifice you." Caretaker reveals to me.

To be continued.

A/N: Hello again. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed. So, we got some new information on the Undead Realm, and some conflicting thoughts from Allie on her savior. But, all in all, a nice day walking though Kaduran city. Then we get Caretaker dropping this bomb. Poor Allie. What else will they learn about the jewel? Find out next time. Please do review if you can. It shows me people enjoy my stories, which is always nice. Thanks again for reading and have a great day!
