Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 7: Voyage to Pevonia by Jurassicfatt

Rosemary's Pov, Kaduran City, Caretaker's Home

Woke up earlier than usual today. I was supposed to have more time off, but unfortunately an assassin's work is never done. I could have slept in, but I need to be ready to use special transport to reach my next client.

Actually, I should be saying we. I still can't believe Allie agreed to come with me. I'm apprehensive about bringing her along. She must really be shaken up after finding out about Certrius. But to come with me on my assignments? Maybe it would be better for her to remain here in Kaduran with Caretaker.

Stop playing like you're not enjoying her wanting to stay with you. It'll give you a chance to get 'closer'... the teasing voice says to me. I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. I pack up my belongings: some clothes, currency, my atlas, two canteens (one for each of us), a book, a club, 3 knives, a sword and my hook and chain. What? You can never be too prepared.

I finish packing up and leave my room. As I make my way downstairs, I see Allie and Caretaker sitting at the table, eating breakfast.

"And that's why you shouldn't listen to exotic pet vendors. Oh, hello Rosemary." Caretaker says to me.

"Hi. You two are up early." I tell them.

"Well, Allie wanted to make sure she didn't sleep in." Caretaker remarks.

"Yeah, I try to be on time when travelling," Allie says, playing with the tips of her hair. "Caretaker was gracious enough to make me some breakfast and warn me about which vendors to steer clear of."

"That's good. He is a vendor, so he knows the game." I say rather too quickly. Very smooth. Sitting down next to Allie and across from Caretaker, I grab the jug of water and pour myself a glass. I turn to Allie.

"You better drink. You'll need it where we're going." I mention.

"Where are we going, by the way?" Allie asks me.

"Yes, where is your assignment?" Caretaker then inquires.

"Pevonia, a monarch-controlled city in the middle of the desert." I tell them.

"Ah, Pevonia. The great oasis of sapphires." Caretaker says aloud.

"Wait, did you say 'monarch'? Doesn't that mean there's a king?" Allie asks.

"A queen, actually." Caretaker tells her. "She's quite beautiful, but also snobby. She wants visitors to know her city is the finest in the land."

"Yeah, finest in isolation. It's almost 16 hours away from every nearby city and academy. Every time they have a problem with Warlords, they call whatever assassins live in Kaduran to deal with it. It'll take about 8 hours in the hot sun to reach it, and we'll be there about three weeks before the next transport arrives." I grumble. If it wasn't for me being in the area, they'd have to send someone from the other side of the continent. God, sometimes I hate my job.

"8 hours?" Allie questions, dumbfounded. "But why? Can't we use something faster?" Allie asks, looking at me with those big blue eyes of hers.

"My lady," Caretaker cuts in, "while she may have a kind heart, Queen Madison is wary of outsiders. She has outlawed all other transports to protect the city. Especially those altered by Dark Magic." Pevonians and their damn rules. If it was up to me, I'd ride my motorcycle all the way there, but unfortunately that's not an option.

"Wow. That's a bit of a drag. Are there any sights on the way there?" she asks.

"We'll mostly see sand. We may see a Warlord or two." I mention. Caretaker puts a hand atop hers.

"Do not worry, my lady. Pevonia is a city of great beauty. They have many customs and dressings the likes of which you have never seen." Caretaker explains, before getting up. "Which reminds me. I have something for you." He then hurries off into the other room. Allie and I get up from our chairs and find Caretaker with a pink garment in hand.

"I apologize, but I happened to see this on the way to my contact yesterday. It's Allavarian silkweed. The lettering I had stitched in. I wouldn't suggest wearing it in public, but it seems comfortable enough to use as sleepwear." Caretaker holds up a bright pink t-shirt. On it in black lettering is the name 'Allie'.

"Oh my god, it's amazing!" Allie says as she takes the shirt, eyeing it closely. She puts it on, the material clinging closely to the large shirt she borrowed from me. It is hugging her curves quite well... Stop.

She then hugs Caretaker, who hugs back.

"Thank you so much! I have no idea what I did to deserve such kindness from you, but you have been so nice to me. I feel I should pay you back." Allie says to him.

"Nonsense. It was my pleasure, my dear. I also bought this altered Earth item for myself. It was on sale." Caretaker takes out a rectangular device, with a black circle and rectangular slot in front, and a see-through square at the top.

"An instant camera?" Allie says immediately.

"Yes. Such a curious device, the vendor said it makes instant paintings, and that he's customized it so it has limitless film."

"I'm sure he meant pictures. But wait, that means you can take as many pictures as you want and never have to replace it. How'd he do that?" Allie asks.

"A spell of some sort. You see, dark magical spells allow sorcerers to manipulate objects in ways they see fit. The larger the change, the longer the spell takes to work. For instance, Rosemary's bike may originally have used fossil liquids to run on Earth, but after it was found in the Undead Realm, sorcerers used their magic to make liquified gemstone the new fuel source. It took months for the spell to finally finish, however, hence why most Realmers and demons use other means of transport. This camera went through a similar process, although it only took five weeks."

"Why so long?"

"I am not an expert, but from what I have been told, it is because Earth objects are so 'different' from ours. While the Undead Realm uses spells and liquified gemstone in order to power our cities, machines, and the like, humans use electricity and fossil liquids. Transitioning from electric or fossil liquids to gemstone is not exactly the easiest process. In addition, many dark magical spells can be used for all sorts of purposes, including creating portals, combat, and healing. Summoning cauldrons go through a thorough production and inspection process, but eventually become capable of communicating long distances and showing historical events."

"So, something like the Web? It's described as an information highway, and uses towers that connect to satellites in orbit around Earth to allow people to access information and communicate around the world." Allie explains.

"I suppose so. Earth items tend to be a bit more expensive, given the 'exotic' quality they possess. Portals open at random, so it is rare to find the exact item multiple times."

"I can imagine." she says.

"We have learned to build some of your Earth items, though. We can always go to the market together once you have returned to see if you recognize any items. Now, if I'm going to get my money's worth, I'd best test out this 'camera' and see how it works. Rosemary, would you mind going near Allie? I'd like to take a 'picture' of you both." Caretaker remarks. My heart begins pounding rapidly.

Ooh... Time to get close to her. The teasing voice speaks again. Shut up! I go next to Allie, at almost an arm's length away.

"Come now, get closer you two." Caretaker demands in a jovial tone. I take two steps towards her as Allie scoots closer to me. I feel so uncomfortable. "Allie, why don't you put an arm around Rosemary? This will make my trip much more relaxed, knowing you two are safe together." Damn you Caretaker! I'm going to throw that thing out the window!

Allie then puts an arm around my neck. That soft skin of hers touches mine and I can smell that strawberry scent coming from her hair. I feel heat rush to my cheeks. Please don't look this way, please don't look this way. I hope she doesn't notice. Caretaker counts up to three before taking the picture, a photo springing slowly from the bottom of the camera. He grabs it and takes a look.

"Well, perhaps this was worth the money!" Caretaker exclaims, before passing me the photo. I look horrible. Like a frightened turtle. Allie looks positively radiant, her smile and hair framed perfectly with the pink shirt. Allie takes a look at the photo before handing it back to Caretaker.

"Thank you, girls. Oh, the sun is coming up. You two had better get going. Rosemary, while you are gone, I will work on the amulet. I will even pay for it to be brought to your residence while in Pevonia." Caretaker tells me. He walks up and hugs Allie. "Be careful, my lady. Do enjoy your trip."

"Thank you, Caretaker. You've been nothing but a gracious host." she says before bowing. He bows back. He then hugs me, wishing me luck before whispering to 'have fun'. He lets me go, and I raise my eyebrow to him, but he just looks at me with a knowing smile. Oh, how I wish I could break his jaw. Allie puts her shirt in a brown wooden case Caretaker gave her, as I sling my large black bag over my shoulder. We wave goodbye as we exit the house and walk straight towards the transport area, on the other side of town. 8 hours in a confined space with Allie, my heart is pounding and my stomach is in knots just thinking about it. A stern voice reminds me:

Focus on the task at hand. She's just a girl. Focus on the task at hand.

Okay. It won't be too bad. I'm sure the 8 hours will fly by.

Allie's Pov, Kaduran City transport area

The past few days have been a tornado of shock and emotions, to say the least. After what Caretaker told me about Certrius, I figured my best bet would be to go with Rosemary. Such a sweetheart, he got me a real cozy pajama shirt to wear. Even had my name stitched on it. I need to make it up to him, somehow.

I was nervous when he asked me to get closer to Rosemary and put my arm around her. I tried smiling as best I could, but having my skin touch her shoulders made goosebumps form all over my arm.

What about the stares she gave you when you put the shirt on? You got so hot down there... Come on, it wasn't like that! She probably wasn't expecting such a bright pink, that's all. I mean, she wears mostly purple and black, so it's quite different.

As I walk next to her, she points out our ride, not that you could miss it. I thought we'd be travelling by horse or camel in the desert. Low and behold, I was wrong again.

In front of us was a massive animal, light gray with six legs and two tails. It was around 10 meters tall and 20 meters long. Its head was like that of a rhino, except no horns. The body was also like a rhino except it was much lower to the ground. The animal's legs are more bent, looking similar to the legs on a lizard. The feet looked like six large frying pans. If it rampaged, I bet it could level cities. But it was completely still, as if awaiting orders. On top of the beast's large back was a green tent-like structure. A small opening could be seen at the top of the tent and a large stepladder with handrails descends towards the sand. A small green man with two heads yells from the top in an unknown language. Rosemary tells me to follow her and we climb up what seems like a never-ending staircase. The creature smells like plastic mixed with dead fish and freshly cut grass. Yuck!

We walk inside the tent and took a seat on some small bean bag shaped chairs. I notice a few small cuts at the top and sides of the tent, letting some glimmers of sunlight in. Rosemary hands the small green man pay for transport. He tells her something, before bowing and then walks passed her to ask the other passengers for payment. It was dreadfully hot inside, so Rosemary pulled out two canteens from her bag.

"Take a big gulp now. Once this Vrandoff starts moving, they'll be a breeze moving through those openings to help cool us off. I'll tell you when to drink again during the ride." she says, before taking a swig of her canteen between her black lips. I notice a droplet of water fall from her lips to her slightly sweaty neck, before dipping into the valley of her breasts. I quickly come to my senses, blushing and looking away before drinking from the canteen, the cool rush of water refreshing my mouth. I then hand her the canteen back and relax into my seat. See you later Kaduran, Pevonia here I come.

Author's Note: Hey everyone. I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I'll be updating this more frequently, so keep an eye out. So, we learned a bit more about dark magic, and now Rosemary and Allie are headed to Pevonia, an oasis city ruled by Queen Madison (I couldn't resist). Allie is following Rosemary on her hunts, but what does that entail? What kind of beasts and Warlords will they encounter? And how will Allie feel sharing a room with Rosemary? Find out in the next chapter. :)

Please do review if you can. It shows me that people enjoy my writing, which is always nice. Thanks again for reading and have a great day!
