Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 8: Welcome to Pevonia by Jurassicfatt
Allie's Pov, Pevonia, Royal Palace, 3 days later, Dusk
Stuck inside. Again. Feels like every vacation I go on has me waiting in a room. I've been in Pevonia for three days and have done nothing but wait for Rosemary. I wanted to explore the city, but Rosemary told me I'd be safer here. Granted, I shouldn't want to go walking around alone when a War Criminal wants to use me as a human sacrifice, but I can't help it. Unfortunately, Rosemary told me to stay and made sure the guards watch the doors at all times. At least they have an endless supply of fruit and water, unlike our trip here.
8 hours of intense heat, people bickering in various languages I couldn't understand and a breeze coming not so often from specifically cut holes at the top of the tent. Three times, Rosemary told me to take another gulp from our canteens, as to not waste it, but it was so unbearable. Not even Tahiti was this hot!
It didn't help at all that the heat made Rosemary's hair cling to the sweat on her body, causing me to involuntarily stare at her. One time she caught me and raised her eyebrow, asking if something was the matter. I blushed before telling her I was lost in thought.
This has really got to stop. I'm sure she's getting uncomfortable and I don't want to scare her. Plus, I'm straight, so I shouldn't even be acting this way. She and Caretaker have been so kind over the past week. I don't want to lose the only people that have shown that to me since I got here. So far, all she's done is try to protect me from… him.
I wish I could go back in time. Make sure I never touched that jewel. Maybe all this wouldn't have happened. The kidnapping, the fear, the death… But I can't. No matter what I do, I can never return to Earth. It scares me so much to be somewhere I know almost nothing about. But I need to keep going. That monster's coming for me after all, so I've got to keep my focus on listening to Rosemary's instructions.
When we arrived, Rosemary carried my bag, despite my protests, and we went through a large blue-pillared gate leading into Pevonia. What a beautiful city. Lush green gardens with pink flowers, blue and white bricked walls, as well as markets filled with spices, clothing, trinkets, those exotic pets Caretaker mentioned and the biggest sapphires I have ever seen in my life. We finally made it to a large white palace with round blue symbols, and guards wearing purple ceremonial garbs and wielding large metal spears. Their clothing, surprisingly, reminds me of the costumes from the movie Aladdin. The guards said the Queen was on business and would return to greet us soon. They then brought us to our room. The Queen must love purple. The room was painted white and purple, with a large white furry sofa, a small black-purplish table, a purple chair, violet rug, large lavender candelabras and one large king size bed with light purple sheets. There were also purple towels in the small restroom and a bell in case we needed a servant. This is the room I've been stuck in. All I've been doing is walking around, eating, sleeping and admiring the knife Rosemary gave me before she left.
'Take this. If anyone tries to hurt you, use it. I'll be back soon.' she said to me. The knife is quite elegant, with its black hilt and steel finish, but it is heavy as all hell. How does she carry those weapons all the time? She must be so strong to carry this like it's nothing.
And don't you love it. Feeling so safe in those strong arms of hers. What! No… *Sigh* Now I'm all types of screwed up. Ugh. I need to get out of her-
"Excuse me, Miss?" I turn around and see one of the guards standing at the front of the room. He's a younger man with dark skin and green eyes. He carries a spear in hand and a sword on his brown leather belt. His face looks rather concerned.
"Yes?" I ask.
"You must come with me. The assassin has returned with a handful of our soldiers. They have killed a Warlord, but many of our men were lost and injured, including the assassin herself." What! I feel my heart skip a beat. I quickly put the knife in the hilt on the back of my pants and ask him where she is.
"In the infirmary. Come." he says, before he and another guard escort me to the infirmary. We walk into a room filled with men and women, some lying on cots and others with bandages covering all/parts of their body. I finally see her sitting on one of the cots, a woman with a green uniform applying something to her arm. Rosemary sees me coming from afar.
"Allie? What are you doing here?" she asks. I can see a deep purple bruise about the size of a baseball right below her shoulder and a large gash on her left arm right above her elbow, with blood seeping out.
"Oh my God! What happened?"
"What do you me-Oh this? A group of Pevonian soldiers and I were in the lower basin of the sewer when we came about that thing." She points over to a large brown corpse in the right corner of the room. Its skin looks like rock and its head is football-shaped with a spike at the top. It was bipedal and about the size of a brown bear. You could see a large cut at the neck with dark greenish blood pouring out. "That beast Warlord came running at us. The soldiers used spears to force it away and I threw my hook to cut its throat. Little did we know that was the male, and its very angry, larger mate was in the area. She plowed right through us and took two soldiers with her. I was able to flip out of the way but she caught me with a lucky shot." Rosemary then pointed to her arm.
"That looks pretty bad. How long have you been here?" I ask.
"A few minutes. Don't worry too much about it. I've had worse, and the healer's applying some antiseptic and bandages so I don't get an infection. I still have a job to do, after all."
"What? Shouldn't you rest up before heading back out there?" I question. I can't help but feel she's taking the situation a bit too lightly.
"Allie, this is my job. I'm a demon assassin. I was hired to get rid of these beast Warlords. Every second I wait here; someone innocent could be in danger." she tells me. I can see how true her words are as she speaks them. She opens her mouth to say something when a soldier wearing white armor comes running towards us.
"Excuse me, Assassin Rosemary, but I must have a word. I am Sub-lieutenant Kustin. A few of the soldiers and I found this in the sewers." He then holds out a slimy turquoise egg. It was completely round and looked to be the size of an ostrich egg.
"Where? How many?" Rosemary inquires.
"In a nest made of what seemed like bone. We uncovered five in total."
"Ugh! Disgusting!" I say aloud.
"Damn it! Maybe that female was pregnant. It would explain why she and the male charged at us when we got near the nest." Rosemary asserts.
"I'm sorry Assassin Rosemary, but my men and I found this in the third level of the sewer line. You were only on the second. So, unless those creatures left their eggs undefended…"
"Those are from something else." Rosemary finished.
"Exactly my fears. My men have cleared it and secured the hatches."
"Wait, are you sure about those being from a Warlord? How do we know something else that lives in the sewers didn't lay those?" I ask. Tons of invasive species are brought by profit-seeking smugglers to other continents all the time on Earth. Who's to say that isn't true here?
"I'm sorry Miss, but nothing lives at the third level except rats. The channel is not very small, but has no openings other than the 4 hatches my men have secured and the small drain which leads into the river under the sands." Rosemary sighs before running a hand through her hair.
"Great. One down, two to go. Sub-lieutenant Kustin, make sure your men keep the third level hatches secure until I arrive. I need to find that female Warlord before going after whatever laid those eggs." Rosemary puts forth.
"Yes, Assassin." he says, before clasping his arm to his chest and running off. She then waves the healer away and gets up, grabbing her hook from the cot.
"Back to the hunt. Look Allie, I can imagine being stuck in that damn room must make you feel a bit flustered, but it's the only way to keep you safe." She then looks into my eyes, causing me to freeze. "I also appreciate your concern for me, but I've been doing this for a while. I've got to go back and finish this so that no one else gets hurt."
"I know, I know. You're the demon assassin after all. It's just that… You're my friend and I don't want you to get hurt." I tell her.
"That's okay. I don't want to get hurt either." she says jokingly, but I see a bit of sadness in her eyes.
"Stop it. I'm serious. Please be careful." I tell her, putting my hand to her arm. She winces a bit, and I realize I just touched the bandaged one.
"Oh God, I'm so- "
"No, no, it's fine. I need to remember not injure it any more than I already have. And I promise to be careful." She then puts a hand to my shoulder and my heart starts racing again at the slight touch. "I'll be back by morning. Okay?"
I nod my head quickly before she turns around and starts walking out of the infirmary. She makes it seem so easy, hunting these demons like it is nothing. She truly is trained for this. I can't help but feel my heartbeat quicken as I see her walk away, going back to face whatever monsters lurk in the sewers.
A/N: Hello everybody. I hope you enjoyed this shorter chapter. So, Rosemary and Allie have arrived in Pevonia. Allie's been cooped up in her room, bored to all hell. And Rosemary was injured, much to Allie's surprise. These Warlords pack a nasty punch, but Rosemary seems unfazed. Looks like Rosemary's got more than she bargained for this time, though. Where is the other Warlord? Who, or what, laid those eggs? Can Rosemary avoid getting even more injured? Next chapter will be the hunt, so find out next time.
Please do review if you can. It shows me people enjoy my stories, which is always nice. Thanks again for reading and have a great day!
