Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 9: Warlord Hunting 101 by Jurassicfatt
Rosemary's Pov, Pevonian Sewers Entrance
I wait in front of the entrance, with a torch in my hand and my hook slung across my back. It is pitch black outside. Sub-lieutenant Kustin and an older Lieutenant named Gran separate the Pevonian soldiers who will be accompanying me into the tunnels. The others will guard the hatches to the third level. The two seem to be at odds with one another, the older Gran constantly shouting at Kustin. As much as I don't want to go back into that literal shithole, I need to kill the female and whatever laid those eggs before the job's done. They've drained quite a bit of water down into the third level, so we should be able to walk through. Gran informs me that Sub-lieutenant Kustin and 15 soldiers will accompany me, while he and a dozen of the men watch the hatches. I turn to Kustin.
"Ready?" he asks, as his men unlock the doors.
"Let's go hunting." I say before walking through the doorway and down into the sewers, again.
Rosemary's Pov, Pevonian Sewers, Second level
No sign of the female. Seems like we've been walking in the sludge here for an hour. The light of our torches shines a few feet in front of us, but anything beyond is pure black. The limestone walls are green, and a brownish-green water slushes at our feet. The smell is just as you can imagine: pure crap. Some of the men complain that they can barely handle it. I keep going, not letting the stench or water get in the way of my job. Sergeant Kustin is to my left, another spearman to my right, and the rest of the squad is behind us. I turn to him, curious about something.
"I don't mean to offend you, Sub-lieutenant, but why did Gran stay behind? I thought title was important in the Pevonian military?" He clicks his tongue, a Pevonian sign of insult.
"Because Gran is afraid of these monsters. He may be my commanding officer, but it was his cowardice which led to the deaths of my men. We were the ones who were asked to deal with the problem before you arrived. He led the men towards that beast, before running the minute it attacked. Nine soldiers died, I was blamed for it, and my rank was reduced."
"Well that's bullshit. He runs yet you get demoted." I say aloud.
"I don't agree with your wording, but yes. It is bullshit." he answers. We come to a four-way sewer line, two of which are blocked off. We decide to split up. Not the best idea, I realize, but we have no choice. Every moment wasted means that thing can get out and attack the civilians. Kustin takes the right tunnel with eight soldiers and I take the forward tunnel with the other seven. As we walk a few meters into it, I notice a greenish blood handprint on the wall. The soldiers and I bring our torches to it. The female was here.
"Its wounded." I say, and a couple of the soldiers cheer as we continue moving forward. We walk until we come across a large opening in the ground. Looks like something broke out from the other level into this one. Pieces of limestone protrude outward, and water drops slowly leaks down into the third level of the sewer, their sound echoing off the walls. The other Warlord.
"Looks like we'll have to go back." I say, before leading the men out. We reach the four-way line again and I hear something faint in the distance. A hum of some sort. Abruptly, I hear men from the right tunnel scream 'It's here' and 'Kill it!" before a large roar can be heard. I grab my hook and chain, tell the men to follow me, and we run down the tunnel as fast as we can. Screaming can be heard all the way there. We reach a large clearing and I see⦠what's left of them. Some of the men vomit at the sight. I kneel down to see the carnage. Three men have had their heads crushed against the wall, the tops of their skulls broken and their blood splattered on the rock. Two others are on the ground, their rib-cages having been bent inward, probably from the female stepping down onto their chests. Another has had his legs ripped off from the knee down, his chest plate marked with a large green handprint. Kustin and the other two soldiers are nowhere to be seen.
"Damn it. This thing moves quick! We need to find Kustin and that Warlord so we can end this. You two, double back and cover the door in case that thing gets any ideas about leaving. The rest, come with me." I get up before one of the men stops and speaks up.
"Isn't that one of the eggs from the third level?" We all stop and shine our torches to the ground. Low and behold, a broken turquoise egg is there, its yellow contents leaking into the water. Shit, that means-
"We're only six. Where's Pelan?" a soldier cuts in. I look and realize we are short one man.
"He was with us before we heard those voices." another soldier chimes in. Without a word of warning, something big and fast grabs the soldier, then quickly jumps back into the darkness with him. The soldier screams, before gurgling and a sick Crunch! can be heard.
"Everyone, back to back! Spears at the ready!" I scream. The five remaining soldiers come together in a circle, clutching their spears firmly in their hands and pointing them forward. Hook and chain in hand, and shoulder to shoulder with the other soldiers, I tell them to quieten down so I can listen for movement. I hear slight thumping and that humming sound against the West ceiling. Then, I see a pair of three orange eyes close and reopen, staring in my direction. I throw my hook towards it. It digs into something fleshy as the chain wraps around it. A bird-like shriek can be heard, echoing off the walls. I pull it hard to the ground and a Thud is heard as it hits the floor.
"I've got you, you bastard!" I yell as I shine a torch forward. In front of me is a leopard-sized and turquoise scaled creature. On its neck were three gills, the yellow skin of them glossy, with clear slime pouring out. They emit a low humming sound. It has four legs, with long sharp claws on each of the four digits of its feet. Based on its long body, it looks quadrupedal. It has a short fishlike tail and black spikes going down its back. The head looks similar to a chameleon, but its eyes are three solid orange orbs. Its small snout holds two flaring nostrils and a row of blood-soaked teeth. The dazed look in its eyes tells me it must be disoriented, but I keep some distance from its mouth to be safe. The hook is deep in its forehead. Suddenly, it snarls. The men stab into its body with their spears over and over, causing it to shriek again. Yet as quickly as they stab, the wounds would heal almost automatically. Fuck, its one of those healing bastards! Only acid can kill it. The best place to pour it is the mouth, since the acid will tear through the beast's throat and insides. I tell the men to hold it down, as I wrap more chain around its neck and pull tightly to keep it in place. With one hand, I go into my jacket and grab a small vial of Kaduran salt acid. The beast begins thrashing about as it sees the vial, trying to release itself from the bonds, but I hold the chain firmly with my left arm as the men hold its body and continue to stab it. I uncork the vial and tilt the bottle forward-
"Rooaarr!" When the female Warlord from earlier yells from behind us, large footsteps going into a charge following suit. I roll out of the way, temporarily releasing the chain and dropping the vial, as the large ovular headed Warlord ploughs through the remaining soldiers, knocking them onto the ground or into walls. The still-lit torches on the ground show its outline in the darkness. This female is at least three feet bigger than the male. It turns around, blows steam from its mouth and pulls its foot back, readying for another charge.
Unfortunately, that wasn't my only problem. With no one holding it down, the scaled Warlord pulls itself free from the chain and tears the hook from its forehead, the skin regenerating in seconds. It turns and glares its orange eyes at me. Fuck. I drag myself up and pull a knife from my boot. It'll cut the creature, but I'll need that acid to kill it. I run head first at it and it jumps toward me, its fang-filled mouth opening to bite. I side-step it and slash its left side. It shrieks, and of course, the ovular headed Warlord runs straight for us. I grab my hook and the vial quickly. Luckily it didn't turn over and dump into the sewage. Turning around, I see a torch mere inches from me. I grab it and throw it towards the scaled Warlord, hoping it'll catch the other one's attention.
It works. The large female charges straight towards the creature and slams it against the wall. The scaled Warlord bites down on the larger female's arm and scratches at her torso, but the female simply bangs it in sickening Thuds! against the wall over and over again, groaning as it tries to free its arm. As I watch her pry the scaled Warlord's mouth from her arm, I see an opportunity.
I grab my hook, run and jump onto her back. As she roars and tries to shake me off, I pour what remains of the vial into the mouth of the scaled Warlord. I lose my grip on my hook, so I stab my knife into the large female Warlord's neck, before I grab my hook once again and try to slash her throat, just above the collar bone. It stops my arm and throws me away, but I catch myself, landing on my feet. I see the scaled Warlord violently coughing chunks of flesh from its mouth, clawing at the ground before it collapses and spasms. The large female Warlord looks straight at me, before stomping on the head of the dying scaled creature. Looks like it's just you and me.
Suddenly, Kustin comes from behind it and stabs a spear into the right thigh of the female Warlord. It roars before swiping at him, but he evades it and grabs another spear, readying himself to fight again. Blood seeps down his face, but he looks determined to kill the thing. The female grabs the spear, pulls it from its thigh, and breaks it in two pieces that fall to the floor. I throw my hook and stab it into the female's left arm, before yanking it hard downward. The beast goes to one knee and Kustin takes the opportunity to lunge at its face. But the female blocks the spear with its hand, green blood seeping from the freshly made wound. I yank the beast's arm hard with my chain, pulling the hook free and then throw it at its head. The hook digs into the left side of its face and it groans. I yank it downward, grab the broken spear and stab it into its brain, blood splattering from the force of the blow. Kustin then stabs what remains of his spear into its neck. It slumps to the ground, finally dead.
Kustin and I share a look. Both of us are covered in blood and bruises. My jacket and part of my shirt is torn. My boots are covered in slime, guts and watery shit. We look around and see three injured soldiers still breathing. I pull my hook free and turn to him.
"What happened?"
"This tunnel leads to the hatches. The beast arrived and Gran ran again, but not quick enough. The beast crushed his body like a twig. His men tried to fight back, and that's when my men and I showed. That beast just wouldn't yield. It charged and ended up knocking me out. When I awoke, my men were dead. I ran as fast as I could when I heard you and the others fighting for your lives." Kustin explains.
"Well, glad you're still kicking. We better go check on the survivors." I say. Two soldiers have dislocated shoulders and cuts on their chests. The other has a broken leg and is barely breathing. "Let's get them out of here." I tell him, before helping Kustin lift the soldier to his feet, putting his arms on either of our shoulders as we walk back towards the entrance of the sewers.
A/N: Hey everyone. I hope you enjoyed this short but action-packed chapter. Not one, but two Warlords to deal with! What a day for poor Rosemary. Luckily her and Sub-lieutenant Kustin were able to stop them. I had a lot of fun typing this chapter. Working on this and a few other stories, both one-shots and multichapter fanfics, so stay tuned. How will Allie react once she sees Rosemary's injuries? Rosemary will definitely need some rest after this mission. Maybe Allie could be of some help? And what other adventures will they have around Pevonia as they wait for the next transport? Find out next time.
Please do review if you can. It shows me people like my stories, which is always nice. Take care and have a great day!
