Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 10: The Banquet, Part I by Jurassicfatt
Allie's Pov, Pevonia, Royal Palace, 3 days later
It's been three days since Rosemary killed those Warlords. So far, she's been resting and hasn't left the room. She refused to stay in the infirmary again, says it makes her nervous. It's funny to think of such a strong, powerful assassin being afraid of staying in a hospital. She's been taking ice baths and eating very little. I swear she must have slept for 12 hours when she first came back. I have to admit; I was afraid when I saw the injuries she had. A doctor has been checking in on her twice a day, making sure her injuries are healing. I've been keeping an eye on her, too. Everywhere except in the bath.
Come on! One peek? You know you want to. Breathe. You're just concerned. She got injured and given she's your friend, you want to make sure she's okay. It makes my heart twinge saying that sentence, but I don't know why. Suddenly, I hear a knock at the door. I tell them to enter, and see it's the green-eyed guard from before.
"Excuse me Miss Allie, am I disturbing you?" he asks politely.
"No, not at all. What is it?" I ask.
"I've come to inform you that Queen Madison has returned from her business trip. She has decided to hold a feast to commemorate the lives lost three days ago. You and Assassin Rosemary have been cordially invited to it." he says, before handing me a blue handkerchief. On it in cursive letters are the words: Queen's invitation.
"Look, I'd love to go, but Rosemary's still healing. I don't think she's in the mood for-"
"For what?" Rosemary answers, startling me. I turn around and see her standing in the doorway of the bedroom, her hands resting against the sides of it. Her hair is over her right shoulder and she's wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts which bring out her hips. What? Jesus, maybe I've got a sugar rush from all the fruit I've been eating.
Oh, you've got a rush, alright. I hear the little voice say in my head again. Not even going to respond to that, brain. Rosemary walks forward before looking down at the invitation.
"Tell the Queen we'll be there. I think I've spent enough time indoors. That goes double for you. I don't know how you stayed in here for so long." she says. With great difficulty, I think to myself. Great, great difficulty.
"Excellent. I shall inform our Queen straight away. The Queen has taken the liberty of choosing your outfits for tonight. Servants, come." the guard says, before two female servants, one pink-skinned and one white, come in with a sapphire dress and a black dress with red highlights. "You are to wear these at tonight's banquet."
"Hey, woah, woah, woah! Now hold on a minute. I said I was going to go. I didn't say I was going to dress in some ridiculous outfit for the 'Killer Queen'." Rosemary asserts. Killer Queen?
"Assassin Rosemary, the Queen has informed me that if you do not wear these, it will disrespect the other guests who will be in attendance. Many royals will be attending the festivities tonight, and it is not customary for a guest to disrespect the wishes of the host." the guard explains to us. She glares at him. I put a hand to her arm and she looks at me.
"Hey, it's alright. The point is to get out of the room. We can just come back if the party isn't our scene." I offer. She closes her eyes for a moment, before looking at the guard.
"*Sigh*, Alright, but no freaking hats! Last time I went to a Pevonian banquet, some stuck-up royal wanted to trade hats because of the 'beautiful color of it'. Never again." she says in a funny accent as she puts a hand to her face. I laugh out loud, before the guard tells us to be ready in one hour. Then, he and the servants leave. Rosemary looks at me.
"We'd better get ready. I'll get changed in the bedroom." she says quickly. I feel my eyes turn to watch her but I stop myself. What is with me? This better stop or else something weird and embarrassing might happen at the banquet.
50 minutes later
This dress is actually nice, and a perfect fit too. It is probably tailor made, given this is a palace. Maybe I have the same build as some of the royal family. It's backless, and it came with some light blue eye shadow and lipstick, a silver necklace and a pair of sapphire shoes. I've brushed my hair, detangling as much as I could. I apply the makeup and put on the necklace, before putting on the shoes, checking myself in the mirror one last time and leaving the bathroom. I see Rosemary with her back turned, standing in her pre-chosen outfit and a pair of boots. It has no sleeves and is quite form-fitting. It is mainly black with a red diagonal line pattern going down the sides, connecting at the bottom in one thin red line. She turns, and I notice the uniform has a cross sketch pattern right above her breasts. My eyes linger there for way too long.
"Hey, ready t-Woah!" she says, her eyes going wide as she looks at me. Her eyes look up and down at me, and her mouth has dropped. I blush before ringing my hands. She clears her throat and then speaks again. "Y-You ready?" she asks.
"I think so. You?"
"Ready as I'll ever be. Let's go." she says, before holding out her arm. I link my arm with hers, goosebumps coating my skin as we walk out of the room and are escorted by guards to the main hall of the palace. She seems to be fine, but I worry if it isn't a bit premature for her to be out and about like this, given her injuries. She's one tough cookie, that's for sure. I should make her some real ones once we get back to Kaduran, to cheer her up. As we enter the doors, voices can be heard chatting all around the room. I see women in fancy dresses and men in well-made suits everywhere. A band sits towards the back, its members having spiky sand-colored skin and various musical instruments, including some drums and guitars? They don't have any cords, so I don't think they run on electricity. I guess they must be like Caretaker's altered camera. Many people are adorned with sapphire jewelry, sipping some sort of drink from their glasses. At least 20 dark brown circular tables have been set up, all with blue table cloths and fancy blue throne-like chairs arranged. Rosemary leans her head to my side and my breath catches in my throat.
"Nervous?" she asks.
"A little. I've never been to a 'banquet' like this before. Or at all, for that matter." I tell her.
"Don't worry, just follow my lead and you'll do fine. I've been to many of these banquets, and I've made plenty of errors. You'll do fine." she repeats to me. I turn to her.
"If you screw up so much at these things, how am I not going to look like a fool following your example?" I didn't mean to say that? Where did that come from? I should have thought before I spoke up. Fearing she might get angry, I look down. But, instead of bickering with me, she just laughs it off, which makes me look at her.
"Hahahaa! Now that's the spirit! There's that girl I saw in the forest." she says to me. Suddenly, a group of men all wearing guard uniforms come out, trumpets blaring. A small fat man with a white mustache and four arms beckons our attention as the trumpets die down. He begins speaking in a regal tone.
"Dearly invited guests. Thank you for coming. It is my pleasure to welcome you to this event, where we honor the lives of those we lost to the Warlords and thank those who helped stop their rampage. May I present to you our ruler, back from the Grevert province, Queen Madison!" he yells. A 5 ft.3 woman with hazel eyes comes into view. She looks to be in her early thirties. She wears a long purple flowing dress and holds a paper fan in her hand. Her hair is an auburn-brown color and she has a large silver tiara in it. She has purple eyeshadow and red lipstick on. She has a snobby look to her, her head up and her face emotionless as she walks with authority. To her right is a brown-eyed woman, same height, with golden tanned skin and long brown hair. She is wearing a royal blue dress, a smaller silver tiara, silver earrings and a necklace with a large sapphire in the middle. She wears blue eyeshadow and shiny blue lipstick. The two walk into the room, and the band members begin play their instruments, singing a song called "Killa Queen".
As the song plays, Queen Madison holds her hand to the woman next to her. The woman grasps it and Madison twirls her in front of the crowd. Some people cheer, while others stay silent. Queen Madison interlaces her hand with the woman, walking with purpose as the band continues. When they finish, the crowd claps and cheers, the band bowing in thanks. Queen Madison claps her hands as well and everyone begins taking their seats. The guards tell us that we will be sitting with Queen Madison at the head table, along with Sub-lieutenant Kustin, his family and a few royals. My first banquet. Well, here goes nothing.
A/N: Hey. Hope you all enjoyed this short chapter. So, Allie and Rosemary have been invited to a banquet by Queen Madison. Rosemary isn't pleased that she chose her outfit, but Allie assured her it should be fine. Sure are a lot of people at this banquet. Should be a fun time. Until next time, take care and have a great day!
