Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 13: Hot Springs and Amulet Awkwardness by Jurassicfatt
Allie's Pov
*dream sequence*
Music from the band.
Dancing. Staring into misty blue eyes. A soothing voice.
"No one will lay a finger on you while I'm around."
Heartbeat rising.
"I promise."
Desire. Wet heat coming from my core.
Someone's watching us. The royals, maybe.
No. Someone else.
Nails scratching on a blackboard. "Hello, again."
I run from the voice, but a large hand smacks me down. I fall to my knees and hold my cheek. Suddenly, my surroundings change. I'm thrust into a forest of some sort, with snow lightly dusting the ground. Sinister looking pine trees thrash back and forth, a strong wind howling in the night. In the distance, a shrine with a T and stakes can be seen. A firepit right under it, unlit and full of soot. I look around and see a woman in the distance. Her face is covered in thick white face paint. Her eyebrows and lips are reddish-black, and she wears a red and white wedding dress with spiked black boots. At first, she sways with the movement of the wind. She turns her head slowly and spots me. She suddenly begins sprinting, now brandishing a whip in her hand. She cracks it and the Thwack! echoes in the night. The woman jumps towards me and screams, thrashing the whip again. I try to run but can't move. I watch the long black end of the whip come towards my face-
Allie's Pov, Pevonia, Royal Palace, Morning
I wake up, my hand clutching my face and my heart pounding harshly against my chest. Another nightmare. *Deep breath* Okay. Breathe Allie. Breathe. After a moment or two, I start to calm down, and begin questioning what happened in my dream. Where was I? Who was that woman? *Sigh*, probably a combination of my mind playing tricks and the alcohol I drank at the banquet. I get up from the bed, and I almost lose my balance. Whew! Last night was a blast, but I think I better lay off whatever alcohol they were serving. I feel a bit of a hangover coming on this morning. Luckily my memory wasn't completely gone, and… that's what scares me the most.
This thing with Rosemary is getting worse. It was really nice of her to teach me the traditional dance last night. I thought she'd be too proud for it, not wanting to dance around so many royals, but she did it anyway. I had a lot of fun. Time seemed to stand still while we danced, and then she promised not to let any harm come to me while I was with her. Again. Her warm hand clutching my chin, bringing heat to my cheeks and butterflies to my stomach as I watch her smile at me. Without thinking, I started getting closer to her, almost as if I wanted to-
Kiss her? And don't play coy, you knew your intentions. A voice says in my head. What? No! Shut up! God, this hangover just got worse and my head is spinning now. I think I better go sit down. I walk out of the bedroom, but I don't see Rosemary anywhere. I go to sit on a chair, when I see a tray on the black coffee table. The tray has a bunch of flat pancake-looking sheets, a tall glass of greenish water, and a jar of blueish-purple jam. On the tray is a card. It reads:
Hey Allie. Hope you slept well. Thank you for listening and for your support. The green drink should help with any ill effects the Pevonian wine has with you. All the best, Mickie.
Oh, how thoughtful. I should thank Mickie in person the next time I see her. I grab the glass of green liquid. It sloshes against the sides as I spin it around slowly. It looks really bad, but it smells sort of like watermelon. That's pretty weird, right? Then again, I'm in another dimension where humans and demons live together, so define weird. As long as it gets rid of this headache, I'm game.
"Here goes nothing." I say, before taking a sip. Huh, not bad. Kind of tastes like lemonade, maybe with a hint of- Woah! My headache just got a lot better. That's pretty impressive. I take another sip, before digging into breakfast. Rosemary comes in seconds later, slowly opening the door, trying to be quiet. Her hair is down and she's back to wearing her black shirt and pants combo. She slowly closes the door before turning and seeing me at the end of the room.
"Allie? Hey, I didn't see you there. When did you get up?" she asks. She has a package in her hands.
"Not too long ago. Mickie sent us breakfast and a drink to kill this hangover I have. Where did you go?" I ask, taking another sip of the green liquid.
"Hangover, huh? Been there." she says. "I went downstairs to ask if the Hot Springs had a private section, so we don't have everyone hovering over us. People here either love or hate assassins, so I don't want you harassed when you're with me." That's really sweet of her. I motion for her to take some breakfast, but she says she's fine.
"What's with the package?" I ask her. It's wrapped pretty tightly and is a dark green color.
"This is a wrap cloth. It's made of the leaves of a desert plant that grows in the Hot Springs. It has been fashioned into clothing designed to be worn in water." she explains.
"So, its like my bathing suit?" I question. I wondered if any kind of swimsuit was worn here or if people just swam butt naked. An image flashes into my mind of a naked Rosemary coming out of a pool, her hands on the edge as she lifts herself out, her skin covered in water beads and her free-hanging breasts swinging in th-Nope! Nope nope nope! Stop it. I close my eyes, forcing the image to disappear.
Stop this little fantasy, right now. You know she doesn't want you. Start worrying a little more about staying alive. A harsh voice cuts in. Right, need to focus on staying safe. Rosemary then answers my question.
"You mean that clothing you wore when we first met? If you use it for swimming, then yes." she clarifies. "Did you pack it?"
"Yeah. Need a bit more time before I'll be ready. We can go a little later." I tell her.
"Not too late, I hope. It's already close to midday and the Hot Springs close an hour before sundown." Rosemary mentions. Wow, I must have really slept in. It was a rather late night.
Don't you know it. Her hands holding onto you, wanting to go lower. Imagine her skin soaking wet at the springs. Oh, so tempting… *Sigh*, Maybe if I drink more of this green liquid, it'll get rid of this annoying voice too.
Allie's Pov, Pevonian Hot Springs, 3 hours later
You know, these Hot Springs really are relaxing. I've been in the water about twenty minutes and it's made my muscles feel as if they just received a thorough massage. Rosemary and I walked from the Palace all the way to the outskirts of town to get here. Luckily, they have an area for us to change when we got there. An oasis of springs with yellow water and reddish-orange rock surrounds us. The water is deepest at the centers of the pools. The attendants told us to put on this lime-green paste on our skin, to avoid burning in the hot sun. Feels like any other kind of sunscreen once you rub it into your skin. We go into a pretty big spring, the diameter must be about three meters, with a large tree in the middle. Well, that explains the plant Rosemary mentioned. Speaking of, she's wearing the outfit she bought this morning. The dark green leaf one-piece hugs her form perfectly. It rests from her upper chest all the way down to her thighs and bottom, covering them from eyes view. She sits with me, the water bubbling slightly from the bottom. She's placed her arms on the edges of the spring, water beading on the light skin of her arms, neck and chest.
Get closer, why don't you? The voice says. Oh my- Splash! I scream and jump at the noise. A little blue-skinned boy with one red eye stares at us, shaking his dark hair free of water. A large, blue and slightly annoyed-looking older woman calls to him. She looks like the boy's mother. He exits the pool and follows the woman away to another section. Rosemary just laughs.
"What's so funny?" I turn to her, still clutching my heart and giving her an eyebrow raise.
"You! I didn't realize you were so skittish in public places!" Rosemary says, laughing again.
"I'm not! It just took me by surprise. Don't tell me you weren't a little shocked by it?"
"Allie, I'm an assassin. Being prepared for the unexpected is part of what I do." she says cockily, her eyes closed. Smartass. Let's see if we can get her off that high horse.
I push a huge wave of water at her with a large Splash! Her eyes fling open and look directly at me.
"Did you just splash me?" she asks, her eyes fierce. I smirk.
"Bet you didn't see that coming. Now you know how it feels." I sass to her. She just looks at me and points an accusing finger.
"Don't start something you can't finish, bunny."
"Bunny?" I ask.
"Yeah, bunny. Cute but easily startled." she says to me, before going back to enjoying the spring. I can't help but blush at the word cute, but I'm annoyed at the easily startled bit. I put my hands in front me and force another wave at Rosemary's head. Splash! Her eyes open again, staring at me.
"Did you ju-" Splash! I don't give her a chance to finish, splashing the water in her face a third time with a smile. "Okay, that's it!" she says, getting up and stretching her arms out to grab me. I quickly swim from her reach, but she's in hot pursuit. I swim to the other edge of the spring, turn around and see Rosemary still coming. As she approaches, I swim along the right side to avoid her and then push myself off the wall into the middle of the pool. Rosemary does the same before grabbing onto my leg. She pulls me towards her. I splash her twice, but she stops me by grabbing my arms. I grab onto her arms and we wrestle each other for control, spinning around and laughing like idiots in the water. She finally gets the upper hand, grabs me by my waist and side slams me into the water, fully submerging me. As I surface, she holds a hand out to me and pulls me up as we laugh again.
"Hahaha! Got you! *Pant pant* Wow. That was fun." she says, grinning widely. We swim back to one side, spend a few more hours relaxing and splashing each other again before leaving for the Palace. We arrive around dusk. The guards ask if we enjoyed ourselves and escort us to our room. They mention that a package arrived for Rosemary while we were gone. We go into the room and see a purple velvet cloth wrapped in simple brown rope, with a letter attached. Rosemary opens the letter.
"It's from Caretaker. It says: 'Hello, girls. I do hope you are enjoying the Pevonian sights. Here's the amulet, built by Cal himself. But be forewarned! Cal says it is quite powerful. I hope you like it. Sincerely, Caretaker.' Hm. Good old Caretaker, always finding a way to get new equipment for me. Cal is the mute sorcerer I mentioned. Well, let's see what we've got." Rosemary says. Inside the package is a circular silver amulet on a chain, no bigger than a pin-button and covered in various symbols. Some look like ancient Greek, while others seem similar to the ones I saw at the Hall of Assassins. In the middle is a crystal, clear in color but with a faint blue aura around it.
"It's beautiful." I say aloud. Rosemary unhooks the chain and begins putting it towards her neck. I stop her. "Wait, shouldn't you be a bit more careful? Caretaker did say to be wary of its power." I mention to her.
"Come on, Allie. I've put on plenty of Cal's trinkets. He exaggerates quite a bit for someone who never speaks." she asserts, before latching it around her neck, the circular centerpiece hovering just above her large cleavage. Dear God, why did I just say that? "See? Nothing to worry ab-", Rosemary starts saying, before she groans in pain, clutching her head with one hand.
"Rosemary!" I go to help her, but the amulet begins glowing brightly, blinding me. I shield my eyes, and then turn as the light diminishes.
Rosemary floats slowly into the air, her hands to her sides outstretched and her head slightly up. The amulet's faint blue aura is more noticeable now. The whites of Rosemary's eyes have that same blue aura around them. Voices whispering can be heard throughout the room. Without warning, Rosemary floats back down to the ground. She looks to her hands, admiring them for a few seconds.
"Rosemary? Are you alright?" I ask her slowly. She looks up at me.
"We are fine." she says cryptically, a mischievous grin on her face. We? It sounds as if multiple voices all said it at the same time with her. "Yes, the female assassin we have joined. Most interesting and powerful."
"Joined? What do you m-"
"Stop. Your voice is sweet but somewhat distracting. You are the… bunny? A peculiar name." Rosemary then tilts her head. She sees a vase filled with flowers sitting on the coffee table. Maybe another gift from Mickie? In seconds, Rosemary grabs a knife from her boot and throws it at the vase. The knife cuts through the tops of 8 of the 12 flowers, as she laughs gleefully. "Perfect."
"Hold on! Who are you and what have you done with Rosemary?" I demand. What the hell is going on?
"The Souls of many. We have done no harm. We have simply become one with this meatsuit, joining her body and mind with ours. Her power is greater for it, as are her emotions." 'Rosemary' explains, before grabbing my hand and pulling me towards her, wrapping an arm around my waist. Before I even have a chance to react, she kisses me. I freeze in place. She smells quite sweet, like honey. Her lips are soft and open. Her right-hand rests on the back of my head. I want to pull away, but instead, I turn my head to the left, close my eyes and kiss back. Her black lips glide across mine slowly. Moans escape from my throat as I melt into the kiss. Her hand tangles in my hair, slightly pulling on it. A rush goes through my veins, straight down to my core. I feel her tongue begging for entrance, running lightly across my bottom lip. I quickly regain my senses and pull back from her. I unravel myself from her and put a few feet of distance between us, wiping my mouth on the back of my hand. I look at her, that same mischievous grin painted across her face.
"Wu-What was that about?" I ask in shock, my mind still in circles over my actions. Why did I do that?
"Like we said, emotions are stronger and much more amplified. And-" Suddenly, the whispers from earlier return, causing Rosemary to stop speaking and look around the room. Nodding her head, she turns to me. "We must go. Not to worry, though. We will meet again soon, little bunny." she explains, before the aura disappears and Rosemary falls to the ground.
I run to her and check her pulse. Her eyes are closed and the amulet is no longer shining. She's unconscious, but alive. Thank God. I grab the amulet, but it burns my hand away. Ow! What the hell? I try again, with the same results. I call the guards and ask them to help me place Rosemary on the bed. A doctor is then called in. I explain to him what happened; under the condition he does not speak a word of it to anyone. He tells me to stay while he checks her vitals. After the examination, he says everything checks out, but that he's never heard of something like this. He explains that 'her energy seems like it was sapped from something', and that it is not uncommon for magical items to affect people during their first usage. But never do they cause them to faint or fall unconscious. He tells me the best thing to do is to let her rest, and that he'll check up on her in the morning. He's informed the guards to keep an ear out. He says to call for him when she wakes, even if it happens in the middle of the night. He then leaves the room. Heading his words, I tuck her into bed. She's been out this entire time. As I exit the room, I keep the door open. I put away all the wet clothes from the springs. Going into the main room, I slowly push one of the couches closer to the opening of the bedroom door. I then take the extra pillows and blankets from the bathroom and make a bed on the sofa. I need to be ready for when she wakes up, so it's best if I sleep nearby. Checking her one last time, I fluff the pillows and get a drink of water. My mind begins to race.
What in the actual hell just happened? Just how powerful is this amulet? How did those voices do that? Where did they come from? What is with the voices telling me her 'emotions are amplified'? And why didn't I push her off me immediately when she kissed me? That heavenly scent. Her hands in my hair as she passionately kissed me. My lips are still tingly from it, and I can feel my heartbeat quicken as I relive the moment. What-What is wrong with me? I think I better go lie down. My head's starting to spin again and this time no green drink's going to get rid of it quick.
Author's Note: Hi everybody. Hope you are well. I hope you enjoyed this new chapter. The day started with a horrible nightmare for Allie. Allie is still coming to terms with what happened at the Banquet. After what seemed like a pretty perfect trip to the Hot Springs with Rosemary, the amulet Caretaker sent arrived... What the hell just happened? Rosemary suddenly starts saying 'We' instead of 'I', acting weird and then kisses Allie, before collapsing. Why? What is this amulet? How does it work? Will Rosemary remember she did when she wakes up? And how will the two respond to the kiss? Find out next time. Until then, have a great day!
