Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 14: Evil Lurking and Talk of Amulets by Jurassicfatt
No One's Pov, Pevonia, Pevonian Centralis, Night
Pevonian Centralis. Pevonia's largest public area/market, is virtually lifeless at night. Minus the guard patrols every 45 minutes and occasional drunken fools tripping in the dark, the once bustling city square is completely empty. At least, it was.
A small pink skinned woman, wearing a black shawl and robe, creeps past corners, watching the guard patrols leave the area. When the coast is clear, she quietly runs past many of the stalls until she reaches one called "Magic lantern corp." Next to the stall is a dark alley, a heap of rotting garbage sitting at the other side of it. Looking over her shoulder, the pink woman walks slowly into the alley. She starts to whisper:
"Havok? I'm here. Hello, Havok?" she begins, before a large figure grabs her by the throat and slams her against the wall. The pink woman starts struggling, gasping for air, before the figure lets her go. The woman looks up at her attacker. The figure is 6 ft. tall, with jet black hair and white skin. The figure wears black shiny boots, a black leather jacket, top, and pants, and a spiked silver and black gas mask that covers from the nose to chin. The mask is held by a silver string which wraps around the ears. Their eyes are light brown and have black paint around them.
"Did you really ne-" the pink woman starts, before the large figure punches her face. The woman goes side first onto the ground, and the assailant kicks her six times in the stomach. The woman groans and gasps in pain with every shot, before she is lifted once again, this time with one hand. The figure removes their gas mask, revealing themselves to be a woman. A look of pure anger is etched on her face, with her scrunched brows and grit teeth showing in the pale moonlight.
"Do not mention my name in public! Ever again!" Havok hisses, punching the pink woman in the gut. She wheezes as the larger woman drops her. She falls to the floor, clutching at her stomach. "Now, what news do you have for me, Shyla?" she asks.
"N-nothing new. I tried to get close at the banquet, but that girl spent so much time near the assassin and the royal guards." the newly named Shyla states, before Havok smacks her down, kicking her head hard and grabbing her by the hair. She smacks her face repeatedly against the ground, then yanks her head back up.
"That's not good enough!" Havok says, raising her fist to punch Shyla, blood now running from her brow. Shyla puts her hands up in fear.
"Wait, p-please! They received a package from the West. Here, I took the cloth it was wrapped in." she begs, pulling the purple cloth from her robes. Havok grabs it from Shyla's hand, admiring it, before stuffing it into her shirt. She then releases Shyla's hair. Shyla slowly gets to her feet, wiping the blood off her face with her shawl.
"He will be pleased to hear this." Havok asserts, before reaching into her jacket and throwing a bag of coins at Shyla's feet. Shyla opens the bag, revealing dozens of silver and gold coins. "Your payment: six-hundred and seventy-five dollars in Pevonian coinage."
Shyla swiftly closes the bag and puts it in her robes, before getting up. "What if I find new information…?"
"Someone else will meet you. You'll meet them near the fruit carts. You'll be paid with interest." Havok says. Shyla's face goes into a smile.
"Thank you-" Shyla starts before Havok grabs her by the throat again, lifting her with both hands. Shyla gasps for air, eyes wide, mouth open and hands clutching Havok's big arms.
"If you ever utter my name again, I will beat you until blood pours from every inch of your face! Am I understood, Shyla?" Havok snarls, before Shyla nods her head. Havok releases her grip. Shyla collapses to the floor, rubbing her neck and taking deep breaths. "We'll be in touch." Havok says, showing her crazed smile, before walking off. Havok walks to another district and enters a small motel. She unlocks the door to a room and goes inside. A bed with green sheets, pale taupe walls and a dirty bathroom filled with blood can be seen. She walks to the kitchen cauldron and says an incantation, before the cauldron begins turning red. She smirks, realizing the spell she was given worked. She pours some black dust into it. A smoke cloud appears, and a woman begins speaking.
"What news have you received Havok?" the voice sneers. The image shows Su, her blackish-red lipstick and eyebrows sticking out in her white face paint. Havok and Su have never seen eye to eye, but they do work together when necessary.
"Put our Master on now." Havok shouts, earning a knock from an adjacent room. She'll have to gut the other guest later. Some footsteps can be heard before a bald-headed man's face enters the cloud.
"Havok, my sweet. How I have missed your enormous thighs!" Father James Mitchell appears, his signature sniveling voice ringing through. "What news do you bring to us?"
"The assassin and the girl went to the Springs a week and a half ago. They also received a package from the West." she then pulls out the cloth from her bust and shows it.
"Excellent. They must have received it from one of the assassin's friends. You have done well, Havok." Mitchell says proudly, smiling wide. Havok nods stoically, but inside she feels elated to have done well for her Master.
"Where are they headed?" Su asks, anger seeping through her voice.
"My source tells me they will return to Kaduran. Though reports of Warlords from the West suggest the assassin may leave for another assignment." Havok puts forth.
"Excellent. Great job, Jessicka. Now come home." Mitchell expresses. "I will not have you running to the West when another of my kind has been terrorizing the area." Mitchell says firmly.
"Beg your forgiveness, Master, but why? You know I can handle myself." Havok argues. Su squints her eyes at her, but Havok ignores it.
"I know, Havok. But you've earned your keep. You are to return home. You and I have… unfinished business to deal with." Mitchell says, smirking. Havok's eyes meet his, and Su stamps off, clearly irritated. "Come now, Su. Don't be like that." Mitchell says halfheartedly. "*Sigh*, Time to be dashing. We will await your arrival." Mitchell tells her, before the smoke cloud slowly disappears and the cauldron goes black again. Havok walks to her bed, packing her meager belongings. As she thinks of Mitchell's last words, a maniacal grin comes over her face.
Allie's Pov, Pevonia, Palace Gardens, Morning
"I can't believe you made such things." Mickie exclaims.
"Hey, mint chocolate chip muffins are a summertime favorite at the Choco Bunny." I say to her. For the past week and a half, every morning I've been going for walks with Mickie. She's actually pretty cool. She's a good listener, and she's very opinionated. She gets really excited when I talk about my shop, especially when I mention flavors she's never heard of. Supposedly chocolate doesn't exist in the Undead Realm, so I had to explain what it was. She fell in love almost instantly, as most people do.
"What other items do you sell at this shop of yours?" Mickie asks.
"Oh, all types of things. I'm good with chocolate, but I make a mean cinnamon bun. Do you know what that is?" She shakes her head. "Cinnamon is a spice from Earth. It has a natural sweetness, but actually lowers blood sugar. You put it in a dough and make it into a swirly bun. It has a lot more to it, but you get the hang of it with practice. You eat it warm, served with or without icing." I explain.
"That sounds amazing. I should have you cater my wedding. Once Madison and I find a date for it, of course." Mickie tells me.
"Where is she, by the way?" I ask. I haven't seen Queen Madison since the banquet.
"She's busy getting me a horse." she says with a large grin. "Also making new trade deals. The council has decided to look for new trading partners now that Nesfaria has been banned. Madison petitioned they do so after the banquet. She's been sent since, as queen, she's technically head of state. Once the council and assembly votes on it, we'll be getting new iron, silver, and gemstone deposits at a fair price."
"Well, that's some good news. And a horse? I didn't know they had horses here. That's pretty cool. Oh, and don't worry too much about a date, yet. I've got a bit of a hectic situation myself." I respond. She stops before turning to me.
"Hey, is everything alright?" Mickie asks.
"Sure, why?" I say all too quickly. She gives me an all-knowing look. "Alright, not really. I mean, I still fear Certrius could show up at any point and take me. So, I guess things could be better."
"I meant between you and Rosemary." Mickie clarifies. Yeah, there's that too. Ever since the incident with the amulet, Rosemary and I haven't really spoken. When she woke up the next morning, she almost bolted out the door. She went to see the doctor, but he says she's perfectly fine, at least from what he told me. She keeps going to see Sergeant Kustin and the other Pevonian authorities, mostly. We see each other briefly at night, eat in absolute silence (rarely, I might add) and go to bed. I needed someone to vent to, so I told Mickie. I even told her about the kiss, something I didn't even mention to the doctor. "Is she still referring to herself as 'we'?" she asks.
"No. But it just seems like ever since that night, neither of us has wanted to talk to one another. Either she bolts or I do before the other wakes up." I explain. "I wish things would go back to the way they were before she put on that damn amulet. And before we… you know."
"Yeah, I get it. Well, the only way that will be possible is if the two of you talk it out. Avoiding each other won't help: trust me, I know." Mickie says, giving me a warm smile.
"You're right. I guess I've dragged this out long enough. I'll go find her and sort this out. Thanks, Mickie. You're the best." I say before hugging her.
"Don't mention it. Now you better go patch things up before your Vrandoff transport trip. Don't want you to be in awkward silence for 8 hours, now do we?" Mickie jokes. I nod, thanking her for her advice and going back to my room. As I walk in, I see Rosemary on the white sofa, tossing an apple in the air a few times. When she finally sees me, she catches it and places it back on the tray, before walking up to me. My heartbeat increases with every step she takes. She stands about five feet from me before speaking.
"H-How was your walk?" she asks. I take a few steps closer.
"It was nice. I told Mickie about some of the desserts I make at my shop." I tell her, before ringing my hands nervously. God, why is this so difficult? We look at each other for a second. Well, here goes…
"Rosemary/Allie." we both speak at the same time, before stopping again. I urge her to continue.
"Okay. Allie, I, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry I've been avoiding you. Ever since the other night…" Rosemary starts, before stopping, moving her hands around and trying to find the right words.
"It's okay. I've been kind of avoiding you, too." I admit.
"You have? Oh." she says somberly. "Look… This has never happened to me before. I've never had a magical item take over my body like that. I'm sorry if I scared you by acting so weirdly, throwing my knife and… and kissing you." she says, looking down for a moment.
"I don't blame you for that. I knew you weren't in control at that moment." I answer truthfully.
"Well, that doesn't make up for me being too cowardly to face you afterwards. I didn't want things to change, so I was afraid to tell you what I was thinking." she tells me. I grab her hand.
"Hey." She looks into my eyes. "We're cool." I tell her.
"*Sigh*, Okay, good. Let's just, just go back to the way we were before. Pretend that night with amulet never happened." Rosemary asserts.
"Yeah. Okay…" I say, my heart dropping instantly at the mention. Somehow, I feel even worse than I did when we weren't talking.
"You okay?" she asks.
"Um-hm." I respond, not making eye contact. She looks at me for a second, before continuing.
"Alright. You have everything packed up?" she asks, breaking my train of thought.
"Yeah. Let me just-" Knock, knock, knock. Three knocks on the door interrupt us, before some royal guards and servants walk in. One servant with a green dress is holding an object draped with a blue cloth.
"Sorry to interrupt. Assassin Rosemary, the Vrandoff transport just arrived." the guard says.
"Thanks." she tells him.
"Now, Miss Allie, the Queen's betrothed, Mickie, told us that she unfortunately will be unable to come give you her goodbye, due to an incident in the Southern district. She wants to say thank you by giving you this." the guard says, before motioning the servant holding the object. The pink skinned woman lifts the drape. Under it is a blue metal cage, and when I see what's in it, I'm speechless. A huge grin comes over my face and I run to the cage. Inside are two of the weirdest bunnies I have ever seen. One has pure white fur with a light blue stripe on the back of one ear, and two pale green eyes with no pupils. The other larger bunny, if that's what you want to call it, is mostly black with some white fur on its belly, two red eyes with black pupils, long black claws, a white tail and a row of sharp teeth. When I put my hand to the cage, it growls low in its throat, causing me to pull away. Rosemary laughs, bringing a bigger smile to my face.
"I like that one." she says. Of course, she would.
"Oh, I like this one. Look at you! Oh, you're so cute!" I say, wiggling my finger to the white one. The bunny comes near the cage and nuzzles its nose against it, making a happy honking sound. Aww!
"The smaller one is a white female Pevonian cottontail. The larger one is a male Dread swamp rabbit. They both enter into a sort of trance when adapting to an environment, so don't worry about them during the trip. The water we've provided should keep them cool." the guard explains. I put the cage down, pack the rest of my things, and meet Rosemary in the main room. Rosemary slings her bag across her shoulder and grabs my bag with her left hand, while I take the rabbit cage. The guards escort us all the way to the transport area, before we slowly get on the Vrandoff and head back to Kaduran. I had to climb up holding the cage with one hand.
Even with the bunnies, I still feel sad by Rosemary's words. Forget it ever happened.
That would be for the best. I hear a harsh voice say in my head.
What about what you felt? Doesn't that matter? Maybe. I don't know. I should just forget about the kiss. Forget about how those lips felt against mine, and her sweet smell of honey, and her… No. No, you know what. I am going to move on from that kiss. I repeat it to myself multiple times, like a mantra, my heart sinking every time I think of the words.
Author's Note: Hey everyone. Hope you enjoyed this newest chapter. So, we have the introduction of Havok, Rosemary and Allie figuring things out after their 'incident' (much to the delight and dismay of Allie), and now they have two pet bunnies! Stay tuned for more when Allie and Rosemary go back to Kaduran. Until next time, have a great day!
