Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 15: Bunny Revelations and A New Assignment by Jurassicfatt
Allie's Pov, Kaduran City, Caretaker's home, Afternoon
As we walk to the door of Caretaker's home, it feels like it has been forever since we were here. I've only been to one city and yet I yearn for more experiences in the Undead Realm. Just, nice ones, please. When we enter, I see Caretaker walk out from his room, his three eyes and sharp teeth visible through the happy expression on his face.
"Rosemary! Allie! Welcome back." he says with his familiar Greek-style accent. He comes and hugs us both, before eyeing the cage. "What is this?"
"Allie made such a good impression with Queen Madison and her bride, that they gave us these as a gift." Rosemary explains.
"Aren't they cute?" I ask him, putting the cage onto the kitchen table. He bends down to see them.
"My, I wasn't expecting the two of you to have children already." Caretaker states amusingly. The both of us blush before Caretaker wiggles his finger to Fenris. Yeah, we both named one: Rosemary chose the name Fenris for the boy rabbit and I chose Phoebe for the girl. Fenris growls low in his throat, looking like a dog about to pounce. Caretaker looks him straight in the eye, and slowly, Fenris begins calming down. Caretaker laughs.
"I do say, this rabbit bears a striking resemblance to you, Rosemary." Caretaker asserts. Rosemary and Fenris look at each other, before turning to Caretaker. Rosemary cocks an eyebrow and Fenris shakes his head. Wait what? Did he understand what Caretaker said?
"Did Fenris understand that?!" I ask. I've never seen a bunny react like that before.
"Dread swamp rabbits are notoriously intelligent. They can even handle basic problem solving." Caretaker explains. I look down and see Fenris nodding his head to me. "Unfortunately, they are also extremely territorial, ready to fight at a moment's notice."
"We were hoping you could look after them while we're gone? I have another assignment-" Rosemary begins saying.
"In the West, yes, I know. I was nearly skewered by a Warlord on the trip home. Luckily, I brought poisonous arrows in my pack." Caretaker admits to us.
"Skewered! Oh my god, are you alright?" I ask fearfully. I hope he hasn't been injured.
"Yes, I'm fine. Still a bit shaken, but fine. I'll have no problem looking af-Oh my goodness!" Caretaker explains before shouting and looking down. We both look at the table. A large brown centipede with black fangs has somehow crawled into the cage. It lunges at Phoebe, who jumps out of the way, fear in her eyes. I go to it but Rosemary grabs me and pulls me away.
"No! That's a Kaduran Sidewinder. The poison from it kills in minutes!" she explains. Oh my god, that thing's going to kill the bunnies!
The centipede begins moving towards Phoebe, but Fenris jumps in front, growling low in his throat. The centipede raises its head upward, showing its yellow underbelly. Fenris opens his mouth wide, rows of razor-sharp teeth visible. He growls again, eyes focusing on the centipede. The disgusting creature lunges towards Fenris, fangs first, but Fenris dodges and bites down on the side of its head. The centipede shakes violently, causing Fenris to let go and jump back.
The centipede rises again, orange blood oozing from the bite mark. Fenris jumps and kicks the cage door, causing it to fly open. He then jumps towards the centipede, growling again and baring his teeth. The centipede winds itself slowly, letting its two antennae wiggle around. It wiggles to the left, the right, then lunges Fenris' left side. Fenris kicks the centipede's head, then jumps forward and bites down on the head once again. The centipede shakes to free itself, but Fenris won't let go. He jumps out of the cage, pulling the centipede with him, as the bug squirms in his grip.
Fenris moves to the edge of the table, jumps to the chair and then the ground, before moving to the flames underneath the cauldron. Fenris throws the centipede into the flames, its body burning in the fire. It quickly crawls out, but Caretaker grabs it with a pair of tongs and holds it outside. Suddenly, a hawk comes down and grabs the still burning bug. Fenris jumps back onto the chair, then the table and returns to the cage. Rosemary closes it as Fenris goes into a corner, a neutral look on his face. Phoebe comes to his side and nuzzles against him. He relaxes before closing his eyes.
"Holy crap!" I say, turning to Rosemary. She's still holding me slightly, the feeling bringing butterflies to my stomach.
"I know. He's one hell of a fighter." Rosemary expresses, shock evident in her voice as she lets go.
"I told you. Highly territorial." Caretaker says suddenly, washing the tongs.
"How the hell did that thing get in the cage" I ask.
"Kaduran sidewinders are known for coming in through small crevices, since their bodies are very malleable. I've tried to plug up as many holes as I can, but dozens of people collect them to harvest their venom. It only takes a few seconds of distraction for one to slip away." Caretaker explains.
"I'm just glad Fenris got to him before it bit Phoebe." I admit.
"That's one hell of a mean streak he's got. He roasted that thing." Rosemary argues, looking at the now sleeping rabbit.
"Doesn't seem like they'll need much care, but I'll watch them for you." Caretaker states.
"Thank you. I'm going to go quickly wash up from our ride here." I tell them, my heart still racing.
"Okay. I need to talk with Caretaker anyways. Once you finish, we're leaving." Rosemary says. I nod before heading to the bathroom.
Rosemary's Pov
Once I hear the door close, I turn to Caretaker and quickly explain what happened the night I put on the amulet. He listens intently, stroking his beard, a smile gracing his lips when I mention the kiss. It's been burned in my memory, the feel of her soft lips meeting mine, as my hand tangles in her silky blonde hair.
"It was as if I was a spectator in my own body. I could feel what I was doing and saying, but I had no control over my movements or actions." I explain.
"Well, I did tell you to be careful." he remarks. "But if what you say is true, perhaps it would be best to analyze it."
"I can't take it off."
"What?"
"I can't. I've tried. Look." I say, moving my hand towards the amulet's chain. The chain moves on its own, avoiding my grasp. I try grabbing the centerpiece but it burns my hand away. "Ow! See what I mean." Caretaker's eyebrows raise slightly, before going to touch the amulet. He pulls his hand away almost immediately, shaking it. We try working as a team, me holding the chain firmly while Caretaker tries to undo the latch, but every time it escapes my grip, and the chain continues to move the latch away from our hands. Finally, we let it go.
"Hm. Remarkable. It doesn't seem to want to get off of you. Do you hear the voices from the amulet often?" Caretaker asks.
"Not really. Once in a while I'll hear them, but it's almost always when I'm dreaming. I can't really make out what they're saying. And I haven't lost control since the first night."
"This is a bit concerning. I wish I could call Cal over to investigate this, but he's not even in town, and I realize you and Allie must leave soon. If anything happens, let me know straight away." he tells me, placing a hand on my shoulder. I smile. Just then, Allie returns from the bathroom.
"Okay, I'm ready. Should I pack anything?" she asks. Her face is no longer sweaty and her hair is slightly curled, making her look adorable.
"Not really. My bike doesn't have any area for large baggage." I explain. I then go into my black bag and pull out a brown dagger holster. "Still have that knife I gave you?"
"Yeah." She says, pulling it from her luggage. I put the knife into the sheath and give it to her.
"Place it on your belt." I say, as she looks at me with her piercing blue eyes. God they are so… Focus on the task at hand. "Allie, we're going into Warlord territory. No city this time, only small towns and villages. I need to protect you, but I also have a job to do. We may be separated at times. That knife," I point to it, "is the only thing that stands between life and death. If it comes to it, I want you to use it."
"B-but I've never used a knife like this before. To… to kill someone. You gave it to me in Pevonia, but the guards made sure I was safe in the room." she says, fear clear in her voice.
"Listen Allie, you've seen the kinds of things Warlords do to Realmers and demons. They are vicious killers, and their followers are no better. They will kill you, given the chance. Do not give them that chance. Am I clear? Can you do this?" I ask her seriously, Caretaker and I looking at her. She's silent for a few seconds.
"Y-Yes. I think so. Can you show me how to…?" she starts, but I silence her by grabbing a knife from my boot. She pulls hers from the sheath. I motion Caretaker to come towards us.
"Just as in humans, all demons have organs. The head houses the brain in most demons. Other areas have arteries." I point to the neck, thigh and heart, just as a start. "Stomach area will slow them down, if not kill them. If they grab you, aim for the elbow pit. Not all demons have their genitals in between their legs, so don't kick there." She nods. "Hold the knife away from you. Never try any fancy tricks. Either hack and slash, or stab, then run." I demonstrate on Caretaker, pretending to hack his arms and turn the knife to stab his eye. I put my knife back in my boot. She tries the techniques a few times on him, before he abruptly grabs her arm, startling her.
"Remember, I may not move, but they will." Caretaker reminds her, before letting her arm go. "Also, a good punch to the face will hurt them too."
"Thanks." she says sheepishly. I turn to her.
"Most importantly, the Warlords. You run. I can handle myself. I do not need your help. Do not try to be a hero." I state. Her eyes shoot up.
"What about in the forest? When I saved you from-"
"That was different. He's humanoid. The Warlords we'll be seeing are beast types. Most of them are much larger and require someone with years of training hunting them." I argue, motioning to myself. "If one or more Warlords, or their minions arrive, you run. That knife is only a last resort option."
"But what if you need help? I can't just sit by and watch yo-"
"No! I would rather one of those Warlords tear me apart then have any harm come to you!" I say, grabbing her arm. She looks sadly into my eyes. I put my other hand to her cheek, caressing it slowly. "You are… my friend. I do not want you getting hurt because of me. If you see one of the Warlords or I tell you to run, you do it. Am I clear?" I ask with authority, raising my voice to show how serious I am. She nods and I release her.
"Yes, I understand." she says compliantly, looking into my eyes. She places her knife back into the holster on her belt and I grab two knives, my hook and chain, club and sword from my bag, and go to the back of the house. I open a door and see my bike, ready and polished for the trip. I turn to Caretaker.
"I had some free time." he explains. "I also packed a few canteens and a bag of spare clothes." He points to the left side of my bike, where four steel canteens and a burlap sack can be seen.
"Thanks." I place the items securely on the side of my bike. Caretaker opens the large door in front of us, showing the roads around Kaduran. I get on and motion Allie over. She sits behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist. The feeling causes my stomach to knot and my heart to race. Focus on the task at hand, I repeat over and over.
"Wait!" Caretaker yells, pulling out two simple motorcycle helmets. "You keep forgetting this. Please don't." He hands a black one to me and a gray one to Allie. We put them on and I rev the engine, the roar reverberating throughout the room and our bodies.
"Thanks, Caretaker. We'll see you soon." I tell him. I turn my head to Allie. "Ready?" I ask.
"Yep." she says.
"Alright. Hold on tight, bunny." I tease, before starting the bike and racing down the Western Road out of Kaduran.

What horrors await them in the West? Who will they meet along the way? And what is in store for that amulet around Rosemary's neck? Will it cause Rosemary to change again? Find out next time.
