Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 16: West Country Assignment by Jurassicfatt

Allie's Pov, West Country, Early Evening

That was one hell of a ride! I've never been on a motorcycle before, especially one this powerful. I'm pretty sure that if I held onto Rosemary any tighter, she'd have problems breathing.

You know she didn't mind. The annoying voice returns to say. Not the time, brain. We've parked right outside of a small town. Looks like a simple farming area, with corn and wheat fields to our right. To our left, simple shabby houses made of rotting wood greet us. They stand on a swampy greenish ground, covered with weird shaped rocks. I'm not kidding when I say some rocks are hexagons. A monastery can be seen a few yards away. The majority of the buildings we see are completely destroyed or have multiple walls knocked down. As we go nearby one, we see streaks of blood painting the broken wood. Four three-toed, bird-like footprints are in the middle of the road. Their impressions are pretty deep. Rosemary crouches down to take a look.

"The Warlord. Must be about 8 meters tall. Quadruped." Rosemary states firmly. We walk for a bit, but the trail ends. "Pretty small for this kind of carnage. Can't tell where the damn thing went. Let's go check the monastery. Maybe some survivors are hiding in there."

We walk down the road towards it. The monastery is pretty small, with a triangular roof, a large bell at the top and one large wooden church door. The roof is made of reddish-pink bricks, the walls of dull gray stone. The square shaped windows are dirty, with large brown patches all over. Rosemary tells me to be ready and we walk inside. A small shrine with a large statue of a three-armed man, with his hands facing forwards, graces us. Behind it, I see a winding staircase and a door to another room on the back-right side. We walk to the door and Rosemary puts a finger to her lips. She slowly opens the door and the smell of blood floods my nose. We walk in and the smell gets even worse, my eyes watering to the foul stench. Looking around the room, I start to feel sick. A man with a bisected body is in the right corner, his bones out and guts spilling out onto the ground, flies and maggots devouring the corpse. A head hangs on a hook in the air. A purple arm and a yellow foot have also been impaled onto two other hooks. In the middle of the room, a large ovular bathtub filled with blood catches the eye. Upon closer inspection, various body parts like eyes, noses, and ears can be seen filling it. Rosemary takes a look.

"The villagers, at least what's left of them. Both Realmers and demons, from the different appendages. What the hell did this?" Rosemary asks. The stench is really getting to me and I feel it's a miracle I haven't thrown up yet.

"This place is horrible and I feel sick to my stomach. Can we leave?" I ask.

"Right behind you." Rosemary says. We move to the door and I reach for the handle. I turn the knob-

Bang! A pale skinny hand bursts through the door, trying to grab me.

"Ah!" I scream, freezing in shock. My heart races in fear as Rosemary grabs me and pulls me from the door, locking it. She immediately pulls out her sword. Multiple hands begin breaking through, all pale with black knuckles and three fingers. Moans can be heard coming from the other side. Yellow eyes and teeth stare at us from the holes in the door, the creatures banging it over and over. The feeble wooden church door moves forward with every blow, its hinges being pushed to their maximum extent. When it is finally forced open, it topples and slams on the ground. Wham! In the doorway, over a dozen yellow-eyed demons can be seen. They are all naked, their pale skin clinging to their bones, like they all suffer from horrible malnourishment. Some carry sticks, others small rocks. Their three-toed feet are full of red sores. I unsheathe my knife with my right hand, ready to fight. The demons moan and groan, pushing themselves through the doorway, all coming towards us.

Rosemary cuts a few heads off with her sword, blood spilling and the heads rolling on the ground. Rosemary tells me to stay back and keeps cutting them down with relative ease. Unfortunately, one gets past her and heads straight for me. He lifts an arm, trying to whack me with a stick. I dodge it and push him away. The minute I touch him, he grabs my shirt with his free hand. I try prying my shirt from him but he has such a strong grip. As I see his hand with the stick raise, instinct takes over. I stab the knife deep in his hand, blood coating the blade. He groans as I pull the knife out. He looks at his hand before coming at me again. I don't hesitate. I slash his arms away and stab his neck, the blade tearing into flesh and bone. The black hilt sticks out of the newly created wound. His neck turns red with blood, leaking down the left side of his chest and arm before he collapses on the ground. I pull my knife out quickly, before reality dawns on me and I feel sick again. Oh my God, I killed him! He's dead!

"Yeah, and he deserved it!" Rosemary says suddenly, making me realize I said that out loud. I turn and see her slashing three demons in the mid-section, their top halves falling to the ground. A demon grabs Rosemary's sword, and two more try to encircle her. She kicks one down and stabs the one holding her sword in the chest, before grabbing the third and throwing him into the blood bath. Bloody water spills over the sides as his head smashes against the bath in a loud Thud! The demon on the ground gets up. I run and stab it quickly in the head, the knife breaking through the thin skin and skull, penetrating his brain. His yellow eyes go dark and the demon slumps to the ground lifelessly. Pulling my knife out, I take a look around. Bodies layer the floor, most of them without their heads. Rosemary's face and clothes are covered in blood. She looks at me briefly.

"You okay?" she asks in a worried tone. My mind wanders over the dead bodies. How does she do this with such ease? Yes, it was self-defense, but I've never killed someone, er, something before. Multiple somethings, actually.

"Y-Yeah, I, I think so. What were those things?" I ask.

"Minions most likely. Explains why they are still alive while everyone else isn't." She pulls the sword from the demon's chest and walks to the blood bath. "We'll have to see," cuts head off the last demon, "what they were up to." His head falls and rolls a few feet from her. We step over the bodies, scale the staircase and see that the door to the bell has been bolted down with nails. Fingernail marks can be seen across it.

"Those things must have barricaded this to make sure no nearby towns could be warned." Rosemary says, before kicking the door down. Inside the room, a large gray bell sits in the center, with a few ropes and a balcony with a view of the whole town. My gosh, the town is completely demolished! Like a twister came through. Rubble litters the town, and more destroyed homes come into view. Looking closely, I spot something in the distance. It's a large orange-skinned creature, walking on four legs. "Well, there's our Warlord. Stay here." she says, before walking through the doorway.

"Wait." I say and she turns around. "Be careful." I tell her. Very original, the voice returns to say. She nods and walks down the staircase. I see her walk outside and straight towards the Warlord.

Don't worry. She knows what she's doing. A voice tells me. Doesn't really calm my nerves, though. Please be careful, Rosemary, I think to myself.

Rosemary's Pov

I walk past the ruined homesteads and houses that people used to frequent. I've sheathed my sword and pulled out my hook and chain. As I turn the corner, I hear what sounds like a struggle and finally see the Warlord in plain sight. This Warlord has orange fur, with blue bird feet and a large deer-like body. The back of it is quite muscular, but the legs are very thin. Its head is like that of a seagull, but it has no eyes. It looks to be about 8 feet tall and 2 meters long. It squawks as it pecks holes into its victim, blood oozing onto the ground. The victim groans and then stops moving, slumping to the ground in deadly defeat. The Warlord pecks one more time, before stomping a foot onto the victim's chest, a Crunch sound echoing out. The Warlord bobs his head up, looking at me with its blood-soaked yellow beak. It squawks aggressively, turning to face me.

"Birdy want a beating?" I tease. I then spin my hook and chain a few times before throwing it at the Warlord's thin legs. It stabs into the right one and wraps around the left. The Warlord squawks painfully as I pull the chain hard, causing it to fall onto its side. I run to it, wrap the rest of my chain around its neck and pull tightly. It snaps its beak at me, trying to find flesh. I pull out my sword and stab it in the neck. It shrieks, then tries to lift itself up. Damnit, die already! I grab the chain with my left hand, go into my boot and pull out my knife, stabbing it deep in the skull. The Warlord shrieks again. The shriek slowly winds down into silence. Its back legs kick in protest before the Warlord's head drops to the ground, a yellow bubbling blood leaking onto orange fur from its wounds. I pull my knife and sword from its head, unwrap my chain from the legs and dislodge my hook from its kneecap. I killed it, but I feel very uncomfortable about the whole situation. This is too easy. A few moments later, I see Allie running up the road towards me.

"Rosemary, that was amazing! You rock!" she exclaims. I blush at the compliment. I clean my knife, sword and hook with a handkerchief.

"It was nothing." I admit. I look at the Warlord and to the man it was pecking. It's one of those gray skinned demons, same as the ones that attacked us. Allie comes over to my side.

"What's wrong?" Allie then notices the body. "That looks like a demon from the monastery."

"It is. This doesn't make any sense. These demons are obviously serving the Warlord. Why would it attack him?" I ask, cleaning my face of dirt and blood with the handkerchief.

"Maybe he pissed off the Warlord?" Allie surmises.

"No. It isn't just that. This town is destroyed. There's no way this thing could have done the massive amount of damage here. But I can't find any other footprints. There's also the monastery. Why were some of the villagers cut up and bled into the bath? Their deaths seemed almost ritualistic." I say, looking around. I walk away from the body, Allie following behind me. All of a sudden, I feel a vibration under my feet. I raise my hand and tell her to stop.

"Do you feel that?" I ask. I feel the vibration again, this time more intense. Allie nods, looking at the floor. The vibration comes a third time, much more intense and I swear I can hear a sound coming from the North. "Get to cover now!" I yell.

"What? Why?" she asks. I feel it again and hear a large boom right outside of the town. Then I feel a large gush of wind come from the same direction, before a large shadow can be seen in the clouds. It looks to be in the shape of a frog.

"Run!" I tell her, and the two of us bolt for the monastery. The shadow nears closer and closer to the ground before landing firmly in front of us. A large blue frog with two eyes, one white and one yellow, stares at the two of us. Standing at around 30 feet, its slimy skin has small gray spots all over. Looking closer, I see that those are the gray demons that attacked us earlier. It blinks one eye, then the other, before speaking in a deep base voice.

"Rejoice! For I, Jedidiah, have returned." Fucking hell!

To be continued.
