Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 17: West Country Assignment Part II, Fireflies and Savagery by Jurassicfatt
Rosemary's Pov, West Country
Allie and I stand before the massive frog Warlord. His belly is extremely large, his short arms in the air as he sits, his large webbed feet pointed in our direction. He stares down at us with his different colored eyes and speaks again.
"I, Warlord Jedidiah, will rebuild this town in my own image!" he says with great enthusiasm, waving his hands to the sky. "First, to slaughter the denizens! Go my children! Kill these Realmers as you see fit!" Almost immediately, the gray skinned demons begin climbing down Jedidiah and landing on the ground around us. I kill two before turning.
"Run!" I yell to Allie. "Get to cover! I'll get their attention!" A chorus of moans sound behind me, so I turn. There must be at least fifty of them. I throw my hook and chain, slashing six of them down, before screaming at Jedidiah. "Hey, asshole!" He looks down to me. "Yeah, you! Were you this ugly as a child? No wonder your parents tried to eat you!" I say mockingly. Jedidiah's eyes widen and then narrow in annoyance.
"My children! Annihilate that firefly!" he bellows, before the massive horde of demons' moan in unison and come towards me. Firefly? I'll worry about that name later. Pulling my sword out, I hack and slash every demon that comes near. Eventually though, the numbers become too great and I'm forced to take drastic measures. Time to do something stupid. I hope Caretaker doesn't get on my case about this.
Allie's Pov, West Country, Monastery
I push the statue with all my strength and block the front entrance. Hopefully that will hold them back. Even I can't believe I moved that big thing all the way over here. I'm pretty sure eight or so demons followed me to the monastery. I hear their moans and bangs coming from the large door. The sun is starting to go down. I've lit a few torches here using a pack of matches Rosemary gave me. They give a soft glow to the room. I pull my knife out from my belt.
"ARGH! You cretin!" Jedidiah bellows from outside. I look through one of the grimy square windows and see Jedidiah using a webbed hand to slap his stomach. Focusing on it, I see Rosemary. Her sword in her left hand, hook in her right, she climbs up the stomach of the giant Warlord. She stabs her blades into his rubbery skin to pull herself higher and higher. She must be 12 feet off the ground! Some of the demons crawl up to attack her, the others moaning and clapping from the ground. One grabs her foot, but she swiftly kicks it square in the face and he falls down to the ground, splattering upon impact. A few more demons meet the same fate. Jedidiah still slaps his stomach, his arms too short to wrap around his large protruding blue belly. The ripples produced do little to stop Rosemary's ascent. Please be car-
Crack! *Glass shattering* A hand suddenly breaks through the bottom of the window, spraying glass and startling me away. I've been so focused on Rosemary; I didn't see one of the demons in front of me. His gray three-fingered hand tries desperately to grasp onto me, but I slash it away, drawing blood. More hands break through the window. God, what do I do now? Looking around, I see the frame is wood. I need to find something to barricade it. I need something big enough to block most of… the other door! I quickly run up the stairs. Behind me, I hear more glass breaking. I finally reach the top, seeing the door Rosemary kicked down earlier. Taking a breath, I pull the large door from the ground and bring it downstairs. I also go into the other room and remove the limbs and head from the three hooks, ignoring the blood on my hands as I pull the hooks down with all my might. I had to jump up and down to remove the last one, but it finally came free.
Walking back to the entrance, I see a demon trying to crawl through a small opening in the cracked glass. I stab him in the eye with my knife, killing him, before raising the door to lean against the window. I feel bad for doing it, but I had no choice. The window is pretty large, but the door blocks a good portion of it. Only the very top is showing. Putting one hand to brace it, I stab one hook deep into the middle of the window frame. I secure it into the wood, and the blunt end sticks out, resting directly against the left side of the door. I then do the same on the right window frame. I step back. The door is nestled between the metal parts of the window and the hooks in the frame. I hear the hands pounding against it, but it seems to be holding. For now. I better defend the left window. I'd put the other door, but it already has holes in it and I only have one hook left.
"Okay, just got to hope these barricades hold up." I say to myself. Yeah, and hope you can hold off eight or so demons singlehandedly. I hold the hook with my left hand and knife in my right, readying for a fight.
Crash! Boom! I turn around and see Rosemary on the ground, pieces of roof around her.
"Oh my God, Rosemary! Are you alright?" I ask, running to her side.
"*Groan*, New plan: don't antagonize the Warlord." she says, slowly rising to her feet. She's holding her side. I help her up, before looking at the roof. The large hole where she came in from is right above me. She starts chanting something in a guttural tone, before a white energy shines from her hands. In seconds, it covers over her entire body. She takes a few deep breaths, then turns to me as the light fades.
"You're in pain. What was that?" I ask.
"*Moan* Small healing spell Cal taught me. Subsidizes the pain for a bit, so I can keep going. We need to find a way out of here. If we go from the back room, we might be able to-" she starts, before getting cut off by large vibrations coming towards the monastery. Then, a massive Boom sound rattles us and the building. Before I know it, I see Jedidiah's white eye look at us through the hole.
"Move, now!" Rosemary tells me, the two of us running to the back room. Jedidiah's large hand comes barreling through the side of the building, causing gray stone pieces to be thrown at us. I see a large piece coming towards me, but Rosemary pushes me out of the way. The piece hits her directly, knocking her into the far wall.
"Rosemary!" I scream as her body collides with the wall. She falls down and lays on her side, not moving. A blue hand with slimy fingers probes through the hole for one of us, causing the rest of the left wall to fall. I'm not quick enough to dodge it, and part of my legs get trapped under the rubble. I try lifting it off me, but it is just too heavy. The webbed hand sifts through it, heading in my direction. The minute he feels my legs, he dusts the pieces off and grabs me, pulling me out through the monastery's broken left side. The Warlord pulls me up to his face, his breath smelling of rancid garbage and his lips full of red sores, similar to the ones on the minion's feet. I wiggle in his grasp, trying to get myself free.
"Let me go!" I yell, but Jedidiah simply laughs.
"Are you giving me orders, little one? My children, see to it the firefly is dead." Jedidiah commands. The remaining gray skinned demons go in through the new opening in the monastery, brandishing bricks and sticks.
"No!" I yell, punching his fingers with all my might. He simply laughs.
"You will make an excellent snack." he proclaims, before lifting me above his head with two rubbery fingers and opening his large mouth wide. His yellowing teeth are sharp and his tongue is a deep lavender color with sores. Oh God, this is it! There's nothing I can do! I'm done for-
Suddenly, my eyes catch something in the distance. Numerous orange lights coming from the ground. Focusing, I see it's a flurry of fireballs! The fireballs hit Jedidiah in the arm and head, burning his skin and causing his hand to drop down and let me go. No! I'm in free fall, feeling the air pushing against my body as I plummet towards the ground. I scream, knowing this is the end and soon I'll be splattered across the dirt road. Then, out of nowhere, a jumping figure catches the corner of my eye. I feel myself fall into someone's grasp, two arms grabbing me tightly, before we fall to the right smoothly. Looking up, I see my rescuer is a black woman, with bright blue hair, lip gloss and eyeshadow. She wears a zipped-up light red jacket, shorts and shoes. She looks at me, before speaking.
"Don't thank me. I'm missing happy hour for this." she tells me, letting me down and turning to Jedidiah. His arm and neck have multiple burn marks. The scent of burning wood fills the air. "Hey dick, you wrecked my favorite bar." the woman says to the big Warlord.
"Firefly!" he says in disgust, looking down at her. She goes into a sprint towards him. He closes his fist and smashes it downwards at her, but the woman dodges it, jumps and runs up his arm, throwing another fireball at him. It collides with his neck this time. He shakes his arm but she jumps off, readying another fireball from her hands. Before she can aim it, however, he swats her out of the sky and she falls down to the ground.
"Time to end this nonsense." he says. Jedidiah raises his fist up, ready to crush the woman.
BANG! RING! The monastery's bell goes crashing into his face, knocking his head back. The bell's ring sounds throughout the town as it hits the ground. Jedidiah topples over, the floor shaking all around me. I see Rosemary running full sprint past me towards the fallen Warlord, hook and chain in hand. Oh, thank goodness! I can't help the flutter that comes my heart knowing she's alright. I notice the crystal in her amulet shining brightly in the darkness. Jedidiah begins to stir, raising his head slightly. Rosemary jumps onto his stomach and runs straight to his face.
"YOU DO NOT TOUCH HER!" she shouts, the other voices from last time speaking alongside her. She stabs her hook into his neck and runs forward, tearing the hook through the flesh of the prone Warlord. He grits his teeth and gasps, Rosemary scratching as much of his skin as she can. "WE SHALL TEAR YOU TO SHREDS FOR HURTING HER!"
I watch her tear the hook from his face, stab it into his mouth, pull the chain hard to open it and then jump inside. In seconds, Jedidiah swallows her in a large gulp, smiling after the act.
"No!" I yell, feeling my heart break at the sight. You've lost another one, a harsh voice tells me. No. Please no! Jedidiah laughs again, before stopping, his eyes widening. He opens his mouth over and over, putting his hands to his throat. He looks like he's choking. More blood begins pouring from the already huge gash on his neck. Someone then breaks through the skin, hook and chain in hand. It's Rosemary! She's covered in his dark blue blood, but she doesn't seem to care. She throws the hook at his nose, the blade piercing deep into his right nostril. She jumps, pulling the Warlord's head down with her. She walks towards where Jedidiah's head meets the ground.
Roughly yanking the hook from his nostril, Rosemary takes her sword in her left hand and begins cleaving into his large skull with both weapons, screaming as she does so. Jedidiah, looking delirious from the amount of blood he's lost already, lifts a hand to his head, gurgling slightly as Rosemary continues the onslaught. Flesh and blood spurt out from his skull onto Rosemary, her weapons and the nearby ground. She finally reaches bone and begins hammering her sword into it, causing Jed to yelp in pain. She continues until she cuts away at part of the skull, stabs her hook into the brain and rips out a large portion of it. Light fades from his eyes and his hands fall to the ground as Rosemary continues to eviscerate his brains.
"WE SHALL VICTIMIZE YOU AND MAKE YOU SUFFER, WARLORD! DIE LIKE YOUR BRETHREN!" she yells. Getting up, I feel the blood rush to my legs, the bruises already setting in my torn jeans. I slowly walk to her side and grab her arm. She looks at me, her eyes tinted with that familiar blue aura.
"Rosemary!" I shout, catching her attention, before speaking softly. "Rosemary, you got him. He's gone. And I'm okay." She finally removes her hook and sword, a mixture of blue and red blood dripping from every inch of her body. Without thinking, I grab her and hug her against me, the blood staining my clothes, hair and cheek. "I'm so glad you're safe."
Rosemary crushes my body to hers, arms encircling me in a possessive way. A minute or so later, I hear footsteps. We separate and see the black woman from earlier limp towards us.
"You know, that's really messed up." she says aloud, pointing to Jed's brain.
"Can we help you?" Rosemary asks, her voice still echoed by the others. She spins her sword in her hand. I turn to her.
"Hey, it's okay. This girl saved me from Jed. Thank you for that, by the way." I explain, before thanking the other girl. Rosemary looks at her as the woman clicks her tongue.
"No problem. That shithead destroyed my favorite bar. He needed to die. His little flock of uglys seems to have booked it after you cut him to pieces." she says, accentuating her words. "Oh, I need a drink. You too?" she asks.
"Where were you all this time, firefly?" Rosemary asks accusingly, pointing her sword.
"I was on my way for a drink at the local bar in a town about 5 miles West of here. People were yelling and screaming. No armies or assassins when you need em. Shithead had showed and broken it to rocks and rubble. Felt it only necessary to make him hurt for that."
"We don't trust you." Rosemary states clearly.
"Don't have to, ASSassin. I just saved your girl's ass." the woman retorts.
"Do not insult us again, firefly!" Rosemary answers back, inching closer.
"Oh? You want to go, bitch? Fine by me." the woman responds, readying a fireball.
"Woah, woah! Everybody, calm down." I say, getting between the two. "She saved my life. She hasn't tried to attack us so far, and we need to wash this blood off. The least we could do is let her guide us to the next town." I tell Rosemary.
"Trust me, if I wanted you dead, you'd be on fire by now." she says, licking her finger and touching her butt before making a sizzle sound. "There's a tavern in the next town. Small, nice place to crash and drink. Holdout area, partially underground, in case Warlords ever attack the region. They've got some baths." she claims. Rosemary looks at her, then turns to me, before nodding.
"Okay. We'll take you up on that. I'm Allie and this is Rosemary." I say, introducing the two of us.
"I'm Kiera. Kiera Hogan. Nice to meet you. Now let's go. I need a jug of martini ale, stat!" she answers.
A/N: Hey guys! Long time. Been a while since I updated, and now, two chapters so quickly? Well, it's been a pretty hectic month on my end. Luckily, I was able to work on Aftermath, as well as some new content, including a new story. Be on the lookout for that one. Trying to update some more before things get busy on my end. So, Rosemary and Allie narrowly survived their encounter with Jedidiah. He nearly killed Allie a few times. Looks like Rosemary made sure he wouldn't get the chance again. That amulet makes her even more... bloodthirsty than usual. Especially when Allie's in danger. Whoa! And we have the introduction to Kiera! From the looks of things, the 'Hottest flame' definitely isn't just a nickname for her. I wonder what the tavern in the holdout town will look like? Will the amulet cause more trouble? And what does a drunken, fire-wielding Kiera look like? I hope you enjoyed the new chapters. Feel free to review! It's always appreciated. Until next time, have a great day everyone!
