Aftermath of the Dark War Chapter 34: Tournament Games Part 2: Jungle of Fear by Jurassicfatt

Rosemary's Pov, Omni Sports Tournament, Colosseum, Afternoon

Well, that was utter bullshit! They stole that win! Allie had that won and Allysin knew it. She had Chelsea bring an edge, in the form of a tree sap because she KNEW Allie would beat her. After all that teamwork they did to fight those damn tentacles, just to screw her over in the end. That little bit of time they took from her could have given Allie the means to win it. Fucking cheating bitch. But the rules don't outlaw it, so Vivian can't do anything. Makes me so pissed off.

"I can't believe they're going to let them girls win. Allie should be the winner, not them cheating phonies!" Rebel argues.

"I know, Cuz, but there's nothing we can do. As much as I hate what they did, the rules can't be changed and we have to accept it." I feel like going down there and kicking Allysin's teeth in. Feel my boot hit the gumline. The amulet begins to heat up, the voices urging me to 'go for it'. Taking a few deep breaths, the feeling subsides and I begin to calm down.

"You okay Cuz? You looked like you were about to rip somebody a new one." I nod my head. "Don't you worry. Allie ain't out of it, yet." She stops, elbowing me in the ribs. "By the way, how did your second meeting go?" Taking another deep breath, I push my hand through my hair and close my eyes.

"Things are a lot more… complicated than I initially thought. I've had a lot to think about since my meeting with the Shadow. I can't say more." If only she knew the half of what I know now. Rebel rubs her palm against my back.

"Hey, if it's private, don't feel the need to share. It's going to be okay, C." Rebel tells me. "You hungry? Hey vendor, can I get a water and a snack for my Cuz? She's starving over 'ere!"

"No, it's okay Rebel. I'm not hungry."

"Well, I'm getting something. Let me see, do you have a nice fruit juice? Okay, I'll take the purple one. And-"

"I'm telling her tonight." I murmur.

"What?" She turns, handing the vendor the money as she finishes her order, grabbing a large purple drink and a stick with corn on the cob.

"Tonight, after the games. I told Allie I want to speak to her about something. I'm finally going to listen to you and Caretaker, and tell her how I feel."

"That's great, C! Finally growing a pair. I'm happy for ya, Cuz." I roll my eyes. She punches my arm, causing me to grab it. Damn it, Rebel, why do you have such a wicked right?! I turn to her, a question still lingering in my mind.

"You… you don't think she'll look at me different once she knows about my past, do you?" Rebel stares at me.

"Are you kidding? You are joking, right Cuz?" I don't answer, simply look down and then back up again. "Damn, Caretaker was right. She's got you good." Rebel places her drink down for a second. "You really think that little girl won't hear you out?"

"I'm not sure how Allie will react." Rebel just laughs out loud. "What's so funny?"

"Hahaha! Whew! Trust me, C, you shouldn't be worrying about it. You have no idea how much that girl cares." I raise my eyebrow. "Allie's down there right now competing in a tournament she's never even heard of, in a place she's never been, in part, to make things up to you and ensure you get paid. If that isn't enough, you should have heard her when we was doing her makeup." Rebel asserts, her accent coming out stronger from talking so fast. The other girls of the makeup department nod their heads. "*Ahem*, 'Do you think Rosemary will like this color? I'm not sure if it's too much. I want to make sure I look nice for her- I mean the event! Look nice for the event. Did you hear Rosemary's joke about the vendors on the promenade? It was really funny. She really liked the gloss I wore last time, maybe we should put some of that on again? Yeah, let's go with that. And eye shadow, maybe? I know black's her favorite color.'" Rebel says in a high-pitch tone, to mimic Allie's voice. She then cocks her head to the side, raising both brows. "That's how it was all morning. Trust me, she ain't going to react the way you think. When are you going to get a better opportunity to share how you feel?"

"I might never get the chance again." I answer lowly, causing Rebel to look at me strangely. "N-Never mind. Looks like the next event is starting." I say, changing the subject. Rebel still looks at me, puzzled by my response, then quickly turns back to the arena's center. If only she knew. The blare of the horns turns my attention away from my thoughts and back to the arena. Come on Allie. You can do this.

Allie's Pov, Omni Sports Tournament, Colosseum, Afternoon

After a few moments rest, I stand in front of Mervin, ready for the next sporting event. This one centers on endurance, just not sure what type yet. Chelsea is a few feet away from me. Still can't believe I lost the first match. Now I need to win the next two if I want to make sure Rosemary gets paid. The horns begin to sound, and Mervin grabs the microphone.

"Humble patrons, I hope that your appetite for excitement has not changed. Because the second event is upon us!" he announces, the crowd screaming. Suddenly, the surroundings begin to change again. Large trees with yellow-brown bark and lime palm leaves rise out of the ground, turning the Colosseum's center into a large sea of green. The sandy ground is coated in their black shadows, the sun barely peeking through the small openings between the leaves. Red vines dangle from their branches, swinging ever so gently in the light afternoon breeze. At the top of the trees is a large cauldron, with a massive air balloon sized smoke cloud above it. In it, I can see Chelsea and I standing on the podium next to Mervin. It must act like a jumbotron for the audience. Mervin then speaks again.

"Welcome to Jungle Trek!" The crowd cheers. "The object of the game is simple. The two competitors will enter the forest. Once they do, the trees will grow larger than they are now, completely submerging them in darkness. Each contestant will have a bracelet. Using these bracelets, they must find shrines hidden within the forest. There will be 3 for each of them. Once one has been destroyed, the bracelet will show a black tally mark. Red tally marks will appear on the bracelet when an opponent has broken their own shrine. Once all three have been broken, the contestant must race to escape the jungle. The first one to destroy all shrines and arrive back here, at the podium, will be declared winner. But be forewarned! With every shrine they smash, the jungle will become more hostile and begin to play with their minds. You won't want to stay in there too long." he singsongs, causing some members of the audience to laugh. Mervin takes two gold bracelets from his robes and places one on Chelsea's hand, and then another on mine. "But, of course, you must be asking, how can we see it, advisor, if it is obscured? Thanks to the generous Vivian the 16th, we have assembled the largest cauldron on this side of the Realm! We will be able to see them compete, even if they cannot see us. Now, who is ready for Jungle Trek?" The crowd roars. "Splendid! The second event will commence…" Mervin pauses, bending down for a second. He then stands up very quickly with the microphone above his lips. "right NOW!"

Chelsea and I turn and bolt for the jungle, the crowd going wild as we enter. The trees grow incredibly tall, their leaves blocking almost all of the sunlight and casting the ground in shadows. Little glimmers remain, and a few bugs glow neon blue in the dark forest. I maintain a steady jogging rhythm, keeping an eye out for any shrines. I wonder what they look like? After a few minutes, it feels like I've been running forever. It is much hotter in here than I thought it would be, and I can already feel my body overheating. The humid jungle air is causing condensation to drip off the leaves and sweat to slicken my forehead and arms. As I run, trying to spot one of the shrines, I look at the bracelet. How does this thing work? Everything looks the same here. How I am ever going to find-

RING! The bracelet lights up and makes a sound as I turn left around a nearby tree. Following the path in front of me, the bracelet begins to emit a faint orange glow. I must be going the right way! I keep following the bracelet until the light is a deep crimson orange and the ring sounds out loudly. I then look around. In front of me is a log, about the size of a sofa. As I put my bracelet close to it, it shines even more. I crawl over the log, grabbing the bark and hoisting myself over it. I finally see the shrine.

It is a small, purple pyramid, no bigger than a dog house. Symbols are carved onto its sides. It is held up by four crude wooden sticks, and is covered in deep moss green smudges. Alright, now that I've found it, time to break the thing. I pick up a stick and try to hit it. But the minute it goes near the pyramid, a magical barrier pushes the stick away, out of my hands. Okay, scratch that. I slowly put my hands on the pyramid itself. This time, no barrier comes up. With all my might, I try to push it off. It sways a bit, but stays put. I start to rock it back and forth, trying to teeter it over. Finally, it falls off of its pedestal. The object topples onto the ground, shattering into a million pieces the minute it touches the floor. I back up as to avoid the sharp glass-like pieces. I look to my bracelet and sure enough, a black tally mark appears. A sudden gust of wind pushes at my back, as the leaves block more sunlight.

Crawling back over the log, I continue my search for the other two shrines. The forest has become denser, and now I'm starting to hear and see things. Movement in the trees. Voices all around. The feeling of eyes staring me down from behind. Swallowing hard, I pant and continue to run through the jungle. Gazing back at the bracelet, I notice a red tally mark near mine. Shit! That wasn't there a second ago! Chelsea must have broken a shrine, too. Doubling my efforts, I finally reach the second shrine, nearly identical to the last. It breaks the same way, the pyramid shattering upon impact with the floor. A harsher wind pushes against my back, and this time I can make out the voices.

"Who do you s-ink you are, destroying my shrines?" the hushed voice slurs, before a deep red face comes out of the trees. It looks like a goblin, with a large pointed nose and sharp teeth. The red vines from earlier are all around me, slithering around. Wait, slithering? Taking a closer look, I see that the vines aren't vines at all, but huge pythons with big yellow eyes, their muscles constricting around the branches. Their mouths are wide open, showing rows upon rows of sharp teeth. "I will cut off your head and feed it to my children, Realmer." I put my hands up in a non-threatening gesture.

"Woah, I-I didn't mean to do anything-"

"Lies. Z-he bo-zh of you are liars and must be punished."

I open my mouth to try and defuse the situation, before remembering Mervin's words about the jungle playing with my mind. I look at my bracelet and see Chelsea has caught up. I bring my chin up and look him dead in the eye. "You aren't real. None of these things are."

"Dispose of her." the face says, before the snakes try to bite me. I duck and roll out of the way, before hightailing it to the next shrine. I hear the goblin head scream for them to 'Get her!', but I keep following the bracelet's light. The voice hurls insults, but I don't let it deter me.

"Come on, come on! Where are you?" I say to myself. The bracelet's orange light becomes darker as I come near two fallen trees, in the shape of an X. Going under them, I find the last shrine. Putting my hands on it, I see the face appear right where the two trees meet.

"Trespasser! I warn you not to destroy zh-at shrine." I ignore him, getting ready to shove it to the ground. In seconds, I heave it over, the sound of the pyramid's collapse bringing a scowl to his face. "Get rid of her!" A flurry of snakes descends from the trees, hissing and barring their teeth at me. I run away, dodging them as they shoot from the trees and launch themselves at my head. I've got to get out of here!

I run around, looking to my bracelet and see three red tally marks next to my black ones. Damn it! She's caught up! Where's the exit? I've got to-

Hiss! A large red python appears right in front of me, stopping me in my tracks. It lunges towards my face, causing me to jump out of the way. My boot catches a branch and I topple to the ground. The snake slithers its way up to me, its eyes never leaving mine.

"Y-You're not real!" I say. The snake hisses again, then launches itself towards me. I put my hand out to stop it from biting my face and close my eyes, expecting to feel those sharp teeth bite into my skin. The ground shakes around me. My heart pounds so hard against my chest. Still waiting to feel the bite, I start to hear the snake struggling. I open my eyes. The snake is stuck in mid-air, wiggling around, a green energy field causing it to stop in its tracks. What? It starts to shiver, going quiet. The snake then begins to go pale, so much so it starts to look like a long dust cloud, before disappearing altogether. What happened? Where the hell did that come from? Getting up, I look over my hands, no trace of any dark magic on them. I notice the bracelet. The race is still going on! Just as I'm about to run again, another voice sounds out.

"Aren't you a bold one? Perhaps there is hope." the voice from my dream says, stopping me dead in my tracks. Rosemary told me it was… Father James Mitchell. I look around, but don't see anyone. Not even the goblin face. "My, my, are you looking for little old me? How very touching." he puts forth.

"This… this is all the forest. All a mirage. None of it is real." I hear a cackling laugh.

"I am as real as that bracelet around your wrist, Allie. My earlier offer still stands, if you're interested?"

I concentrate, trying to force the voice away. Before long, Mitchell's voice is gone as I get further away from the area. I continue to search for an exit, before screaming and crying catches my attention. I should get out of here. It could be a trick. As the crying gets louder though, I feel myself following it. I approach a large tangle of red vines, all converging around Chelsea, the girl balling her eyes out as they slither up to her. She's on the ground, her lip quivering as she's scooting herself against the tree and kicking them away.

"P-Please. Just go a-away! Leave me alone!" she screams. As much as I should leave her for the stunt she pulled in the last event, seeing the genuine fear in her eyes makes me feel sorry for her. I kick the vines away, making her aware of my presence. She looks at me, wiping away her tears and trying to appear brave. "Sorry. I just… really don't like snakes." Chelsea tells me, rubbing her arm. She slowly rises to her feet. The minute she does, she tries to whack me with a stick. I block it and she pushes past me, dropping the item. You little sneak! Trying to cheat again. Running after her, I see that the bracelet is getting darker the more I follow. I catch up to her, the two of us jumping over falling branches and dodging more vines. I can't let her win this or its over! I run as fast as I can, sprinting with all I have. I finally make it out of the forest and run straight for the podium. Chelsea arrives a few seconds later, and a siren ends the match.

"May I present the winner of the Jungle Trek event, Allie!" Mervin proclaims, raising my hand and earning me a thunderous reaction from the crowd.

"GREAT JOB, ALLIE! WOO GIRL! YOU ROCK!" Rebel screams, waving her hands like there's no tomorrow. I turn to look at the section and see Rosemary on her feet, fist up in the air. A sense of pride comes to my chest, knowing I did well for her. Just as I'm about to enjoy the win, the judge with two heads goes up to Mervin, raising his voice.

"She cannot be allowed to win the match." he states firmly, drawing odd looks from the crowd and the honourable section.

"Excuse me, Favrid, but by what grounds do you make such an accusation? She has done everything that was asked of-"

"She did not destroy the entire shrine. Simply knocked over the topping pyramids and left the wooden foundations upright. And part of the event was unviewable, due to your cauldron's mishap." Mervin just stares at him, shaking his head from side to side in confusion.

"Weren't those pyramids the main part of the shrine? The goblin-face told me I broke them when he sent those snakes after me and Chelsea. If I hadn't destroyed them, why would he bother?" I ask the judge, who shrugs his shoulders.

"Perhaps he found you displeasing. Regardless, the event should be restarted-"

"THAT IS ENOUGH, FAVRID!" Vivian shouts from afar, gaining all of our attention. She slithers up to the four of us, Allysin hot on her tail. Vivian stops in her tracks in front of Favrid. "These are ludicrous accusations. The central point of the shrine was the pyramid. There is no reason for you to nitpick on such frivolities. On top of that, despite what we missed due to technical difficulties, we still saw both competitors' main actions. You seem to be eager to point out Allie's errors, while completely neglecting the fact that Chelsea Green attacked Allie during a match of endurance, which could be liable for immediate disqualification."

"Vivian, you can-" Allysin starts, before being cut off.

"Shut up, half-breed! This does not concern you!" Vivian barks at her.

"Okay, first of all, calm down. You have no right to speak to me that way, nor to insult me the way you just did. I've bit my tongue quite a few times, but that doesn't mean I have to keep doing it. I can send insults too, snake fucker. Second, if this concerns my friend Chelsea and her ability to win the match, you better believe it is my business." Allysin and Vivian stand almost nose to nose, the two glaring at each other.

"You have no place here, Allysin."

"That is not true and you know it! Chelsea worked her ass off for that win!" Chelsea simply stands there, not having said a word in at all since the argument began. She finally begins to speak.

"Allysin, Allie did make it her-" Allysin raises her hand, causing Chelsea to go quiet again. Allysin continues to go back and forth with Vivian, the two screaming at one another. Allysin takes a step forward and balls her fist, while Vivian's fingernails begin to extend from her right hand. Mervin gets between the two, pushing Vivian away.

"Gracious hostess, Ms. Allysin, please calm down. There is no reason for this! Remember, we are still visible to the audience." he tells them, whispering the last part through his teeth. The two look at the crowd, who have gone silent and are staring at the scene. "Allie must be the winner. Even though Favrid considers this a win for Chelsea, every other judge has ruled in Allie's favour, so the decision stands." Favrid bows, then walks back to his seat. Allysin immediately kicks the dirt, then calls Chelsea over, the two walking a good beat away. Vivian simply smiles, then turns to the advisor.

"Mervin!" Vivian yells.

"Yes, great hostess?"

"This is the second time I have had to intervene in an event, because you were not able to handle the situation properly. Why did we lose connection during the event?"

"I have n-no idea, great hostess! It happened right after the Duchess Chelsea jumped over the pond and Allie the Bunny tripped. This is one of the most impressive summoning cauldrons in history, forged with the most meticulous dark magic incantations. I will uncover what could have caused the temporary blockage right after the games."

"You better! You will also report to me after this event is completed to discuss your inefficiencies. Just make sure that the next event does not suffer the same issues." Vivian orders the smaller man.

"Yes, your highness." He bows. Vivian then turns to me.

"Good job Allie. I am sorry for this favoritism nonsense. Rest assured; we follow the rules here. You have just one match left. I bid you good luck." She bows and I do the same. She then walks up to Chelsea, most likely to give the same good luck message, before going back to her seat. Allysin says a few more words to Chelsea, before leaving. Looking at the crowd, I see Rebel, Cal, and Rosemary seated. I wave to them, the two waving back. Okay, onto the third event: combat.

Author's Note: Hello everyone. Hope you've been doing well. The second challenge of the Omni Sports trifecta event- Jungle Trek! Rosemary's finally going to confess her feelings. But what's causing her to act so distraught? What happened in that meeting with the Shadow? Returning to the event, Allie won! Goblin + snakes is not the best scenario, not going to lie. Got to say, having snakes lunge at you in the dark is a pretty big fear for most people. Fear of snakes, in general, is pretty common. But what exactly happened in the jungle between Allie and that snake? How did she do that? Did she actually hear someone, or was it all part of the jungle affecting her mind? Either way, Allie won the event, although there was another incident concerning the same judge. Vivian and Allysin ready to throw down over Allie's victory. All said and done, it's still 1-1. Tiebreaker will be the last round. Next chapter will be the third challenge and final part of the trifecta event.
