Chapter 13
Operation Checkmate
"Wait. What is Operation Checkmate?" Nora asks.
"It was originally a plan to turn Beacon into an Atlas school by claiming that it lacked the training necessary for future huntsmen." Reese says.
Yang knew he was lying but she kept to herself what it truly was.
"Really and how does that involve you?" Nora asks.
Now she was digging and someone had to stop it.
"He was evaluating to see if the school was lacking in certain departments." Yang says.
"Was it?" Nora asks.
"Nope." Reese says.
"Ok cool so now what are we going to do?" Nora asks.
"Well we are on the run so we have two options. One run or two stand our ground and fight." Reese says.
"Fight! Are you insane?" Jaune says.
"Only a little." Reese says with a smirk.
"We are against the largest military force in the world of Remnant. We will be crushed!" Jaune says.
"Do you remember the lessons that oobleck gave us?" Reese asks.
"Which ones? I was asleep most of the time." Jaune says.
"Well that's bad. Anyway how were big army's taken out or at least disabled?" Reese asks.
Everyone takes a moment to think then Blake broke the silence.
"Every army can be disabled by small unit tactics." Blake says.
"Good." Reese says.
"So how are we going to do that?" Ren asks.
Reese then looks at Winter and taps the side of his head.
"Weiss, take your friends away for a minute. It looks like Reese wants to talk to me alone." Winter says without breaking eye contact.
Some of the teams look like they were about to object but Yang and Weiss lead them away.
"So what do you need? Winter asks.
"Is there a way that a fire mission can be approved without ironwood's orders?" Reese asks.
"Well it can only be done if a spec ops team has the authority to do so, like if they have several HVT's in sight and we need to take them out in one go." Winter says.
"Humm is there a way to trick them?" Reese asks.
"Well unless you have the encryption codes. Then I don't see it happening." Winter says.
"Ok how badly does ironwood want to take me down?" Reese asks.
"Badly he probably would do anything to get.. oh no don't tell me." Winter says.
"Yes I am going to try to arrest him." Reese says.
"Do you know how bad of an idea that is? And more than likely he will fire at you on sight." Winter says.
"Yeah it's a bad idea. I'm probably going to die." Reese says.
"Why don't you run?" Winter says.
"Well if I keep running ironwood will eventually get me so I'm going to beat him to the punch." Reese says.
"So your going to eliminate him?" Winter asks.
"Yep I am then if the rules are accurate Atlas will stop chasing me." Reese says.
"There is a possibility that they will continue, but if you do take out the high command the main force will be at a standstill." Winter says.
"And what happens next?" Reese asks.
"Well the next higher ranking person takes over." Winter says.
"And who would be next?" Reese says.
"I would be." Winter says.
Then Winter realizes what's going to happen.
"You're going to put me in charge?" Winter asks.
"Yes I am in order to find Ruby I need your help and if ironwood can't be helpful then he needs to step aside." Reese says.
"And you think Atlas has the resources to find her?" Winter asks.
"Yep I do. And I'm aware of ironwood's semblance." Reese says.
"And you're going to use it against him." Winter says.
"Yep that's the idea." Reese says.
"You're crazy." Winter says.
"Maybe I am crazy enough to keep moving forward." Reese says as he leaves.
Reese then exited the room and walked past Yang but she stopped him.
"Where are you going?" Yang asks.
"To get the Atlas military off of my tail." Reese says.
"Well I'm going with you, and you can't stop me." Yang says.
"Yang you do realize that there will be blood spilled there will be no peaceful route." Reese says.
"I understand what you need to do. I understand that you're doing this so you can save my sister. And I'm also going to stand by your side as your wife." Yang says as she embraces Reese.
At that same moment Yang then removed the helmet from the armor and kissed Reese.
"Ok you can follow me, but everyone else stays." Reese says.
"No!" Both Weiss and Blake say.
"Why?" Reese says.
"Ruby is our teammate and we both want her back." Blake says.
"You know the danger?" Reese asks.
"Yes we do plus ironwood has some crimes to answer for." Weiss says.
"Ok then let's get ready." Reese says.
Meanwhile at Ruby's location.
Ruby had lost track of how long time had passed since she was captured by Salem.
And in that time frame Salem has done unspeakable things to her. Ranging from zapping her with lighting. To Salem put her hand on Ruby's head and fill her mind with terrifying images and other times Salem would lightly cut Ruby's arm and let a Grimm sniff her; it was mainly to sense her fear.
But what made it more terrifying was the fact that Salem hasn't left the room where Ruby is in.
"You think I have better things to do?" Salem says.
Ruby nods without looking up.
"Well normally that's true. But now that I have you I'm going to change you so you can see what your doing is pointless, your friend understands it and now she is on my side." Salem says.
"Pyrrha!" Ruby says with shock as she looks up.
"Yes her." Salem says with a grin.
Ruby then sees in the shadows a pair of eyes looking at her one bright green the other bright red.
That then made Ruby's Hope dash away and Salem knew it.
"Good now you see why it's hopeless." Salem says.
Back at Reese.
"Ok we have everything we need to kick this off." Reese says as he throws two duffle bags on a table.
"Where did you get this stuff?" Weiss asks.
"Well Atlas has many safe houses in the area. So I took the time to "liberate" their armory's for useful items." Reese says.
In one bag there was body armor and ammo, in the other there was firearms and several blocks of something.
"What's this?" Blake asks as she holds up one of the blocks.
"That is a very powerful explosive." Reese says.
"Why did you get a small amount?" Blake asks.
"Let me put it to you this way. If that was to go off right now where we are hiding would be a crater about 200 feet wide." Reese says.
Blake then looks down at the baseball sized ball and puts it down.
"Why did you get us armor? Our auras will protect us." Weiss says.
"Well I'm just guessing but if ironwood has guys after us they might be using anti aura rounds so they will go right through your aura no matter how strong it may be." Reese says.
So for a good amount of time Reese helped the woman get fitted in their new vests.
"How many hits will it take?" Yang asks.
"Well this current generation of plates you should get seven hits before its compromised." Reese says.
"I feel heavy." Blake says.
"It takes some time to get used to. But once you get it to your combat grove then you won't notice." Reese says as he makes the final adjustment on Yangs vest.
"So what is our ROE?" Weiss asks.
"If you can resolve the situation in a non lethal way then go for it, if not the put them down. Hopefully I can gain control of the situation before you have to go that far." Reese says.
"So this what a real operation feels like." Yang says in a boring voice.
"Yeah just be glad your not in the military the briefings are usually a few hours long, then comes the planning phase that takes several more hours then, the load outs then the deployment." Reese says.
"So we are compressing everything in a few hours." Weiss says.
"Yep we are." Reese says.
Some time later they were in position.
"So why did Reese give us what did he call them "clackers"?" Yang says.
"He is going to plant the explosives then when he is ready he will give us the green light." Weiss says.
"Then the action happens." Blake says.
"Reese here just got done now heading back." Reese says over the radio.
"Well that was easy." Yang says.
Meanwhile in ironwoods office.
"Sir Winter is here." The secretary says.
"Let her in." Ironwood says.
Winter enters the office and salutes him.
"Sir." Winter says.
"Winter it has come to my attention that you have been away from your desk for a while now. Care to explain." Ironwood says.
"There have a lot of problems. They usually involve Reese." Winter says.
"Are you hot on his trail?" Ironwood asks.
"Yes I am currently Intel says he is here but I don't know what his objective is." Winter says.
"Well there is one problem." Ironwood says.
"And that is?" Winter asks.
Ironwood then draws his gun and points it right at Winter.
"Winter I have had my spies follow you and they have reported that you have been with Reese for a long time. So you know what he is up to. Now I'll drop all evidence that is against you if you tell me what he is up to we can put a stop to him." Ironwood says.
Meanwhile on the roof where Reese is.
"In position wait for my call." Reese says on the radio.
Yang then picks up the clacker and flips the safety.
"Ready." Yang says.
Reese then descended from the roof and started to rappel to ironwoods office.
Back at winter.
"Sir I have not helped him in any way." Winter says.
CLICK! That's the sound of the hammer being cocked.
"Winter you have always been my favorite soldier and I want to see you climb higher in the military. Just tell me where he is." Ironwood says.
Winter looks out the window and sees a black armored figure.
"He is right behind you." Winter says with a smile.
Ironwood then turns around just in time to see his window break.
10 seconds ago.
Reese then sees a gun being drawn on Winter this part he did not see coming.
"Yang blow the charges in 30 seconds." Reese says on the radio.
"Got it." Yang says.
Reese then jumps and breaks the window and at the same time activated the armor mode.
SMASH! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Ironwood fired but he missed all his shots.
Reese then tackled him and pinned ironwoods arms.
"Got you son of a bitch." Reese says.
Ironwood then struggled and threw Reese off and got his gun again.
"No I got you." Ironwood says.
Winter then runs up and tries to disarm ironwood but was unsuccessful, ironwood then grabbed her and threw her next to Reese.
"Now it's over." Ironwood says as he take aim.
"It's not over till you say Checkmate." Reese says.
"What do you mean?" Ironwood asks.
BOOM! That was the charges going off then the building starts to tilt.
"What did you do?" Winter asks.
"Chaos try to keep up." Reese says.
"W,B,Y go secure the building." Reese says over the radio.
Weiss,Blake, and yang then rushed the building and began to clear it.
"It's over ironwood stop fighting." Reese says.
"Never Atlas will prevail!" Ironwood says as he lifts a big gun up to aim.
"Well that's a big fucking gun." Reese says as he gets on the move.
Ironwood fires a shot but missed both of them but his main target was to kill Reese and maintain control of the situation, but Reese was to fast for him.
"That gen seven armor is way faster then expected." Ironwood thinks.
Then the building then tilted and fell on top of another building that made it come to a stop now everyone was now fighting on the walls instead of the floor. But they were still in danger of falling nine plus stories high from the building they were currently trapped in.
At the same time Yang knocked a Atlas security guard out of the fight, next thing she saw was the building coming down.
"DID REESE PLAN FOR THIS?" Blake shouts.
"I DON'T KNOW BUT I HAVE A FEELING HE NEEDS HELP!" Yang shouts.
"GO! WE GOT THINGS COVERED HERE." Weiss says as she makes an ice wall.
Yang then begins the climb up to where Reese is and hopefully makes it in time.
At the same time a firefight is under way.
BOOM! BOOM! BANG! BOOM!
Several shots were exchanged between ironwood and Winter plus Reese but so far no one is making any progress.
"This is not going to work Winter." Reese says over an encrypted radio.
"Well do you have an idea?" Winter asks.
BANG!
"Well I suggest we both charge him at the same time you take left I take right." Reese says.
"Wilco you have the ball." Winter says as she slaps a new mag in her gun.
"Set!" Reese says.
Winter then gets ready to run.
BANG! BANG! Reese fired two shots.
"Go!" Reese said as he ran to the right side and at the same time Winter moved to the left.
Ironwood then sees winter then gets up and draw her dual swords and at the same time Reese comes running out from the shadows at his 10 o'clock position with his 45 drawn.
Ironwood then realized that they were doing a pincer move it was an unbeatable move unless.
"Checkmate." Ironwood says.
Next thing Reese sees is the armor shuts down and enters a lockdown state.
"What the?" Reese says.
Winter then looks at Reese and in return she got hit so hard that her aura broke and was now in a daze.
"You honestly think that I would let the new next generation of armor go missing without some sort of safety measure in it. Now it ends here you will die." Ironwood says as he takes aim.
BOOM!
The door shattered and Reese recoiled from the sound then he heard a new sound.
"DON'T YOU KILL MY HUSBAND!"
That was Yang and she was mad.
Ironwood didn't have time to recover from the blast that yang gave him, but that was all the time yang needed to close the distance.
Winter then took the opportunity to try to unlock the armor, thankfully it was a simple removal of the computer chip and hard restart it.
The bad part is it takes time for a hard reset to finish. But it looked like yang had it under control but Reese saw what was about to happen.
"Winter hurry up I got to stop her." Reese says.
Yang was on adrenaline and she was not thinking clearly.
"YOU SCREWED US OVER AND IT COST US GREIF FOR MY TEAM AND YOU HELPED IN GETTING MY SISTER KIDNAPED!" Yang shouts with ever increasing force.
Just at that point ironwood's aura broke but Yang didn't notice, she then closed the distance and grabbed him and threw him out the window, she was not done yet he then armed her firearm in the robotic arm that ironwood gave her and fired a shot.
BOOM! WHAP!
Direct hit mid air, then the body fell from 8 floors up.
"Winter step away from me right now." Reese says.
Winter didn't question it and took several steps back.
Yang then turns around and looks at Reese who was still on the ground, she then walked over to him and knelt down and cradled him in her arms.
Just then Reese had full control over the armor and he hugged her.
"Yang talk to me what's going on?" Reese asks in a gentle voice.
Yang was just shaking, just then the building then started to tilt a little bit more.
"We got to get out of here." Reese says as he gets Yang on his back then he runs to the window.
Winter then runs with him and they both jumped.
Reese then assumes the standard glide position that winter taught him and at the same time activate the armor mode.
They then hit the ground where they meet Weiss and Blake.
"What happened up there? We had the ground floor secured then Yang ran off." Weiss asks.
"Long story but we did it." Reese says.
"Now what happened to her?" Blake says as she points to Yang.
"Oh her she is sleeping off the effects of adrenaline." Reese says.
"I'm going back to the facility to take charge." Winter says as she leaves.
"K we will go to the next safe house." Reese says.
About 30 minutes later they entered the safe house and made themselves at home, the only down side is that they had one bedroom to share.
Reese then put Yang on the bed and turned around.
"You guys are going to have to share. I'll take the floor." Reese says as he sits down with the DEW in his hands.
Weiss and Blake didn't object; they then climbed in and fell asleep in an instant.
A few hours later.
Reese woke up to see that winter is calling.
"Yeah." Reese says in his groggy voice.
"Real brief I have now control over the military so it's safe to go back to the hotel. I'll be seeing you soon." Winter says as she hangs up.
Reese then gets up and stretches.
"They are going to hate me for this." Reese says as he is about to wake Weiss up.
"Uhhh what Reese it felt like I was asleep for a few minutes." Weiss says.
"Winter has control of the military. We can head back to the hotel." Reese says.
"Fine I'll get up, but once we get there I'm getting some sleep." Weiss says.
"You'll have my word." Reese says as he shakes Blake.
When Reese got to yang she still didn't wake up.
"Looks like I'll have to carry her." Reese says as he picks her up.
Some time later they got back to the hotel they were at, and they still found the lobby was shot up.
"Hope our rooms are still intact." Reese says.
They then made it to the main room (Yangs and Reese's room) and opened it up to see a masked figure.
Weiss and Blake were slow on the draw but they saw in an instant Reese had his DEW aimed at the individual.
"Raven." Reese says.
Raven then took off her mask and looked at Reese.
"What happened to yang?" Raven asks.
"Well it depends on what you're here for." Reese says.
"I understand why you don't trust me, and I bet yang has told you all the stories about me." Raven says.
"Yeah she has." Reese says.
"But I want to talk to you, tell your friends to leave." Raven says as she drops her weapon." Raven says.
"Weiss, Blake, stay in this room we will be in the main bedroom if you hear something go wrong well you know it went south." Reese says as he opens the door.
Raven was hesitant but a word from Reese changed her mind.
"Guests first." Reese says.
Raven then entered the bedroom and took a seat in the corner, at the same time Reese put Yang on the far side of the bed and parted her messy hair away from her face.
"You take good care of her?" Raven asks.
"Yep I do, she has done a lot of things for me." Reese says.
"So what happened? I was flying to find Qrow then I saw a building come down." Raven says.
"Umm it was a raid to clear some people of false crimes. And well it was not peaceful." Reese says.
"Did yang get hurt?" Raven asks as a flash of concern went across her face.
"Oh now your concerned about her safety. No she is not hurt, she is wearing down the effects of a large adrenaline rush." Reese says.
"How large was it?" Raven asks.
"Well she was in a combat scenario, then she ran up several flights of stairs to find me in danger, then she went into a blind rage and she dispatched someone." Reese says.
"Did she realize who she was fighting?" Raven asks.
"I really don't know. For all I know she saw red in her vision." Reese says.
"Ah I see." Raven says.
"So what are you here for?" Reese asks.
"I'm here to give you data pertaining to Ruby. Do you have her weapon?" Raven asks.
"Yep I have it." Reese says.
"Good it will make tracking her aura easier. Now Atlas should have a machine where it can pinpoint her location. But that's all the information I can give you I need to go back." Raven says as she leaves the room.
Reese didn't follow her; he stayed at Yang's side until she woke up.
About an hour later, Yang woke up.
"How did I get here?" Yang asks.
"Short story. You passed out and I carried you everywhere." Reese says.
"Oh i see." Yang says as she looks down.
Reese then observed her for a second waiting for something to happen. Just then her heart rate spiked and Yang had a panicked look on her face.
"What did I do!?" Yang shouts.
Reese then rushed forward and gave her a hug.
"Patty deactivate the armor." Reese says.
The armor then melted off of him the last thing to remove is the helmet.
Yang at the same time felt the warmth of his shoulder and cried into it.
"Reese what am I feeling?" Yang asks in between tears.
"What your feeling is the feeling of taking a life, you're not going to get better keeping the feelings bottled up so let it out." Reese says.
For the next several minutes Reese hugged Yang even though she wanted to let go. After a bit she stopped.
"You good?" Reese asks.
"Yeah I'm good." Yang says back, shaking a little.
They part and Yang looks at the scars on his chest again.
"Do they hurt?" Yang says as she touches one of the larger ones.
"Depends on the day. Like today I haven't felt it, maybe the combat high was kicking in." Reese says.
"What's that?" Yang asks.
"Well it's another term that means your on adrenaline and it's really dangerous to be in that for a long time." Reese says.
"Why?" Yang says.
"Well you lose touch of what's happening around you in fact you could have gotten hit and you wouldn't notice." Reese says.
"So thats probably where I was when I went to defend you." Yang says.
"Yep you were in that zone. You charged in without thought, and if I'm correct you probably saw red." Reese says.
"Yeah I did. So what happened when I passed out?" Yang asks.
"Well Winter took over the military so I'm off the list, and your mom was here." Reese says.
"What did she want?" Yang asks as her eyes turn red.
"She was here to drop off information for our rescue of Ruby that's all." Reese says unfazed.
"Where is Weiss and Blake?" Yang asks.
"Sleeping in the other room." Reese says.
Yang looks at Reese and his eyes are really red from lack of sleep.
"You look tired." Yang says.
"Yeah I am, I've been awake for 60 hours now and I only got maybe an hour at best." Reese says.
"Are you going to sleep with me?" Yang asks.
"Not until you say your fine." Reese says.
"Reese really I'm fine just hold on to me and sleep with me you need a break." Yang says.
Reese then climbs in and hugs Yang and she hugs him back.
"Humm I missed this feeling." Yang says while smiling.
"Same here." Reese says.
Some hours later.
Reese woke up to the sounds of cars stopping in front of the building.
"Yang we got company." Reese says as he shakes her awake.
"What really? I thought we were done fighting for a bit." Yang says as she gets up.
"As far as the Atlas forces are concerned. It's not over till it's over." Reese says as he runs past the armor that's on the ground.
The instant Reese's foot made contact with the armor it immediately grabbed hold and started moving around so it could fit his body.
Reese then got to the living room to find Weiss and Blake asleep.
"Get up! We have problems." Reese says as he racks a round into the dmr.
The women didn't question him; they slapped their body armor on in record time and turned off the lights.
Reese then activated his night vision and the IR laser on his weapon and took aim at the door.
"They are outside the door." Reese whispers.
"Whatever happens Reese I love you." Yang says as she takes a combat stance.
"Love you too yang." Reese says back.
For a few minutes it was silent, nothing happened.
"What's going on?" Weiss asks.
"Wait one." Reese says.
Then Reese drove his palm down and caused a frequency that only he could hear.
Just then he saw two unknowns standing at the door not moving, in fact they had their backs to the door.
"Patty comms now." Reese says.
"Floor is all clear. General, you may enter the building." The unknown said.
"Incoming." Reese said as he gets ready.
The door then opens and Reese has his laser on the center area of the target and now applying pressure on the trigger.
"Stand down Reese." Says Winter.
Reese then let go of the trigger and stands up.
"You know it's way easier to say hi alone then without an army following you right." Reese says.
When Reese got a good look at Winter her outfit remained unchanged but she did have the shoulder cloak on her right shoulder.
"Yes well I still have to do things by the book still." Winter says.
"Still? Humm guess things never change." Reese says.
"Ma'am you do realize that your talking to the most wanted agent in all of Atlas." Said her bodyguard.
"Yes I do and now that I'm in charge you do not do anything to him, I have full control over him. If I want him to clean my feet he'll ask "how well do you want them clean?" Do I make myself clear?" Winter says with an authoritative voice.
"Yes ma'am." He says.
"Good now wait outside, I need to have a chat." Winter says.
Then the guards left and silence was in the room.
"So now how do you plan on finding Ruby?" Winter asks.
"Simple her weapon has a trace amount of aura inside it, in theory we can use the satellites to find her location." Reese says.
Later at the lab.
"Haven't been here in awhile." Reese says.
"I've never been here." Weiss says.
Currently winter and team rwby is in a truck being transported to the facility.
When they arrived all of them got out and looked around.
"Home again." Reese says.
Yang took interest in that part.
"This is your home?" Yang asks.
"Yeah. Every time I have talked about the facility. This is the place." Reese says while gesturing with his hands.
"Reese front and center at my side." Winter commands.
Reese then went straight to her.
The group then walked in and entered through the doors.
"Still as cold as ever." Reese says.
"What do you mean?" Blake asks as she shakes.
"I've always wondered why the head guys have kept this place cold, maybe it was to wake us up." Reese says.
"Or to see how long you could endure it." Winter says.
The group passed by a wall with famous persons that the Atlas military has honored, Reese then sees ironwood and looks at it for a second, then he finds a red marker then he writes across it.
"TRAITOR TO THE NATION OF ATLAS."
Then Reese put it down and continued to follow the grip to the lab.
When he got to the lab he saw the quartermaster having his usual fit.
"Why can't I take apart this weapon?" The quartermaster says.
"Because it belongs to someone else and it's special to them." Winter says.
"Oh come on it looks very nice I just want a peek." Quartermaster says.
Reese then noticed that Yang was getting mad.
"You won't do anything to that." Reese says.
"Oh look at that mr I know everything is back. Enjoy your vacation?" He says.
"Yes I did, how about you getting to scanning it." Reese says.
"Fine, fine. Let's see where the owner is hiding." Quartermaster says.
The team watched the satellite view of where the tracker got to work.
"Wow the signal is all over the place, but it's closing in." The quartermaster says.
At this point Yang was anxious and Reese held her hand.
Just then the signal stopped over a dark region.
"Where is that located?" Reese asks.
"The location is unknown but our satellites have been studying the location but we need better equipment to see it better." The quartermaster says.
Reese had already downloaded the map data and grabbed Yang's hand.
"Come let's talk in private." Reese says.
"But I want to…" Yang says.
"No buts come on." Reese says.
Reese then lifted Yang up and started to carry her out bridal style.
"Where are we going?" Yang asks.
"My old room." Reese says.
After going down several flights of stairs Reese and Yang got to the barracks area of the facility.
"Ah room 45. Home sweet home." Reese says.
"This was your room?" Yang asks.
"Well technically it was my teams room." Reese says.
Reese then punched in the code and to his surprise it still worked and the door opened, and inside was the the same four beds and two desks and bathrooms.
Reese put Yang down and let her look around.
"So who was with you in your team?" Yang asks.
"Me, crystal, jack,and kathryn." Reese says.
"I see." Yang says.
"Let me guess. Still troubled." Reese says.
"Yes I am, I just don't know if Ruby is still alive." Yang says.
"Let's look at the map." Reese says as he takes off the helmet.
Reese then put it on his desk and the hologram of the world came up with Ruby's last known location.
"So what are you going to do?" Yang asks.
"Study." Reese says.
After a few hours Yang and Reese were both asleep on his bed.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
"Reese you in there?" Winter asks.
"Yes I am." Reese says back.
"Report to the briefing room in five." Winter says.
"Got it." Reese says as he gets up.
Some time later.
"So from the looks of it the unknown location is very mountainous terrain with pools of the black goo." Winter says.
"So a class five environment. What a wild world this is." Reese says.
"Exactly. But what is interesting is the clouds broke at 20:30 and we could make out the shape of a castle here." Winter says.
"That's where she is." Reese says.
"How do you figure?" Weiss asks.
"Well the aura tracker put her within a 200 foot radius of her last known." Reese says.
Then the circle showed that the castle was within the radius.
"Good let's go." Yang says.
"Yang I hate to say this but you and Blake and Weiss are staying here." Reese says.
"But she is my sister." Yang says.
