Chapter 19
Island bound
The two jets have been slowly flying for the past five hours to reach the area where Patch is.
"Reese, when do we get to go back to the ground?" Blake asks.
"Um if Pattys calculations are correct in another four hours we will be back on the ground, granted if we don't miss the window." Reese says.
"And if we miss it?" Weiss asks.
"Another day in space with limited fuel with no third chance if we screw up a second time." Reese says.
"So we are more in trouble up here then down there?" Yang asks.
"At least we don't have to deal with Grimm up here,"Reese says.
The group then went silent at the last point.
"We are at least one hour out from the descent point." Patty says.
From that point according to Pattys math they can safely descend to the ground.
Reese was looking at the rear view camera and he could still see that atlas was still on fire.
"Hope Winter made it out." Reese says.
"She made it out, don't worry." Weiss says.
The last radio contact Reese had with her was about 3 hours ago.
"So what is the game plan when we get to Patch?" Weiss asks.
"Well go to Ruby and Yangs house and convert it into a safe house then hunker down so I can see if Ruby has some sort of tracker inside of her and remove it so Salem can't track her." Reese says in one breath.
"But you don't have an idea where the tracker would be." Blake says.
"I have a few theory's." Reese says.
"Ok mind sharing." Yang says.
"My theory is wherever this bug is it's affecting Ruby's hormones." Reese says.
Yang then caught on to what he was saying.
"No way your going to look in those areas." Yang says.
"Do you want to run from Grimm again?" Reese says.
"No." Yang says.
"Argument over." Reese says.
"Are you even a doctor?" Weiss asks.
"Somewhat I was trained to treat combat wounds and to do minor surgery. Plus Patty will guide me." Reese says.
"That's comforting." Weiss says.
"Well I can't risk some other doctor who will take their time, and having Grimm hone in on us in a few days." Reese says.
"It took Salem three weeks to find us." Weiss says.
"Yeah she took that long to prepare for the attack, I have a feeling that we won't have that long." Reese says.
"So if you find this bug what are you going to do with it?" Blake asks.
"Find a rocket and fire it in a random direction." Reese says.
"And that should buy you some time?" Yang says.
"Yep it should. Make it look like we stopped for a brief moment, then keept moving." Reese says.
"So now here is the real question. How long do you think you have to look for whatever you're looking for?" Yang asks.
"About an hour and a half." Reese says.
"So you're preparing for the operation, how?" Weiss asks.
"Well Patty is radioing ahead of us for the ground crews to set up a tent with equipment to perform the operation." Reese says.
"That's one part, what about you?" Blake says.
"I'm looking at medical books on the helmet and looking into the different ways I could perform the operation." Reese says.
After that comment everyone stayed silent and continued to look out the windows to burn the image of space into their heads as far as they know it's the last time they might see this kind of thing.
40 minutes later they started the descent to Patch.
"For those who are not wearing polarized helmets I suggest to put your head down." Reese says.
"Why?" Blake says.
"Have you seen reentry? It gets just as bright as the surface of the sun." Reese says.
For the next three minutes all everyone heard was the aircraft shaking and it got really warm inside the jet. Then it stopped and it felt normal.
"You can look now." Reese says.
Everyone then looked outside and saw the bright blue sky's of Remnant and the oceans that they know about.
"We are currently traveling at Mach 3 inbound to Patch, estimated time of arrival 30 minutes, ground crews are on standby." Patty says.
"Good." Reese says.
Right at five miles the radio squaked.
"Unknown aircraft you are entering restricted airspace, respond or you will be fired upon." The tower said.
"This is Reese with team RWBY we are inbound for a surgery." Reese says.
"Roger, you're moving very fast for a life flight. What are you in?" The ATC asks.
"Classified and don't try to get pictures of it everything is blacked out." Patty says over the radio.
The jets then went into landing procedure, another 3 minutes later they touched down and it was dark on the runway.
"Give Ruby to me." Reese says.
Yang gave Ruby to Reese and got out of the jet.
While the rest of the team was grabbing their gear Reese was rushing to the tent where the gear was waiting for him.
"Get the morphine ready." Reese says.
One second later ruby was out again.
Reese then took a moment to think about the past couple of days.
"You have been through a lot ruby. I wonder why Salem wants you so badly." Reese thought.
Reese then draped a cloth over ruby and got to work. Time was running short.
The rest of the team was now waiting outside the tent for any good news.
"What is he doing in there? I want to see." Yang says.
"Yang don't interrupt him, he is probably doing something really precise, and needs every ounce of focus he has left." Weiss says.
Unbeknownst to the team Reese had his helmet on mute.
"Well I'm kinda against what he is doing to her,he is looking in the areas where female hormones are produced." Yang says back.
"Well don't you think before he opens her up he is taking multiple scans to see what he is looking for?" Blake asks.
"Well yeah. But still it's my little sister he is doing surgery on." Yang says.
Weiss then tilted her head a little.
"Sounds like you don't have faith in him." Weiss says.
"What do you mean?" Yang asks.
"What I mean is you are faithful to him in your marriage right?" Weiss asks.
"Yes I have no regrets from that decision." Yang says.
"Do you have faith that he will be successful?" Weiss asks.
Yang hesitated on that question.
"Well umm." Yang says.
"Looks like there is a problem." Blake says.
"What kind of problem?!" Yang says aggressively.
"The kind of problem where you doubt Reese's ability to pull off the impossible." Weiss says.
"Well he did get ruby out of Salem's castle just fine." Yang says.
"But he lost his team in the process." Blake says.
"He took on Cinder even tho the odds were against him." Weiss says.
"Well he had Pyrrha's help." Yang fired back.
"He got me out of the white fang camp and effectively eliminated the leadership of that terrible organization." Blake says.
"Well ummm." Yang was saying.
"And he was able to find me when my father kidnapped me." Weiss says.
Yang was not able to get a word at this point.
"And lastly he was able to find you and pull you out of whatever hole you were in after the attack on beacon." Weiss says proudly.
Yang was now silent, she had never taken anything into account especially the past events where he regularly pulled off the impossible.
"You should be lucky that you have him, he is the best man anyone could ask for." Blake says.
Yang then took a small walk to clear her head of the doubt that had formed inside of her head.
"Do you think she got the message?" Blake whispered to Weiss.
"I hope so." Weiss says back.
After a few minutes Reese came out of the tent holding a jar, inside said jar containing two slugs of some sort and they didn't look happy being removed from their host.
"Got it out now how to get rid of it." Reese says.
Meanwhile at Atlas.
Salem had her eyes closed, she was meditating.
"Where are you, Miss rose?" Salem says.
Just then she felt a sensation like she found Ruby on a small island.
"Found you". Salem says as she gets up and gets ready to move.
At the same time at patch.
"Those are the trackers?" Weiss says with a weird face.
"Yep they are, I noticed when ruby was under they were under too, now they are out of her they have woken up and now they are doing their thing." Reese says.
"GET RID OF THEM!" Both Weiss and Blake said.
Reese then looked around and realized something.
"Patty, where is the rocket?" Reese asks.
"It was here." Patty says.
"No time to think, how much fuel does the jet have left?" Reese asks.
"About an hour and half." Patty says.
Reese then ran towards it at that same moment Patty got the hint and started the engines up.
"Send the jet in a random direction." Reese says.
Reese then threw the jar into the pilot seat and closed the hatch.
"Sorry winter." Reese says.
The jet then took off and went straight up in a random direction.
At the same time Salem was now experiencing a sudden acceleration and ascent.
"Oh she is moving. I'll wait and see." Salem says.
"Have you considered that you might be tricked?" A hooded figure asked.
"No, I hid those slugs really well." Salem says.
Back at Reese.
Reese was now sitting on the ground catching his breath, when Weiss and Blake walked up to him.
"So were you successful?" Weiss asks.
"Yes I was completely, ruby should be up soon." Reese says.
"So where did you find them?" Blake asks.
"First one was next to the kidney wedged between the adrenal gland, the other was on the underside of her right side breast, luckily I had to make small cuts less than 3 inches to extract them. So no ugly scars for Ruby." Reese says.
Both women sighed in relief.
"Good work Reese." Weiss says as she hugs him.
"Thanks, it was very difficult for me to do this. Where is Yang?" Reese asks.
"She is on a walk, she had some difficulty having faith in you to pull this off." Blake says.
Reese shrugged his shoulders.
"Eh I can see why, we have been through a lot so some doubts are about to come up here and there." Reese says in a calm fashion.
Reese then looked at the tracker that was located on Yang's scroll and it turned out she was at her dads house.
"Well it's time for us to go." Reese said.
"Where are we going?" Weiss asks.
"Home." Reese said as he packed up his gear.
An hour later.
Knock. Knock.
Yang's father got up from the couch to answer the door. He was surprised to see a guy in black armor and two women and a backpack with a hint of red hair poking out.
"Got any more room dad." Reese says.
"Yeah sure, come in." Tai says.
"You have a lovely home." Weiss says.
"Oh thanks I built it all by hand. So where is Ruby?" Tai says.
"Right here safe and sound." Reese says.
Reese lays the backpack down on the couch and opens it up and slowly brings ruby out of it.
Reese then takes a step back so Tai can look at her.
"What happened to her?" Tai asks.
"Yang didn't tell you?" Reese says.
"No, she didn't say a thing except "I'm going to bed". " Tai says.
Reese then turned to Weiss and Blake.
"There are two guest beds, top of the stairs and the door on the right." Reese says.
Both women got the hint and left the room.
Reese then sat down.
"Your going to need to sit down, it's a long story." Reese says.
Reese then recounted the past 4 weeks of what happened between the events of arrival in Atlas to ruby's kidnapping to gen ironwood's "removal" by Yang's hand to the rescue of ruby and the price that Reese's team paid and to now.
Tai then leaned back with his eyes showing shock.
"Well I guess we have to make some markers for your team tomorrow morning." Tai said after some time.
"Why?" Reese asks.
"Because they have my thanks for rescuing my little girl, and they should be honored, but we need to get some sleep, I'll watch over ruby you need a break." Tai says.
"Thanks, Yang is in her room?" Reese asks.
"Yep she is." Tai says.
Reese then entered her room silently as to not disturb her, lo and behold there she is in her bed asleep, Reese then lays down next to her and puts his arm around her, but he didn't expect her hand to grab his hand.
"Night." Reese whispered as sleep came over him.
The next morning Yang woke up to see Reese right next to her still sleeping next to her she then got up and went straight to the kitchen to get something to eat, but there was a surprise waiting for her, at the table was Ruby slowly eating strawberries with milk.
Yang then rushed forward and gave her sister a hug.
"How are you feeling?" Yang asks.
"Good I guess. What happened to me?" Ruby says.
"Well you got a surgery where Reese was looking for trackers inside of you." Yang says.
"Was he successful?" Ruby asks.
"I don't know I wasn't there." Yang says.
Just then two more sets of feet came down from the guest room.
It was Weiss and Blake much to ruby's surprise, the team then shared every bit of information with ruby so she could get the big picture.
"So where is dad?" Yang asks.
"He said something about making a memorial." Ruby says as she shrugs.
The rest of the team looked at each other with questionable looks on their faces.
Just then the back door opens and in comes Tai and Reese.
"I like that memorial a lot. my team would appreciate it." Reese says.
"Hey no problem, it's thanks for everything you have done." Tai says.
Yang then took notice.
"Hey how did you sneak past us?" Yang asks.
"I got up shortly after you, and I walked past you while you were hugging Ruby." Reese says.
The team was now really confused. And Reese went back to bed.
"What did he mean dad?" Ruby asks.
"What he said is he walked right in front of you but you were so focused on each other that you didn't notice, it's a basic focus experiment." Tai says.
"What were you doing with Reese? Yang asks.
"As thanks for getting my daughter out of whatever she was held, I made a memorial for his team, he will place it somewhere soon after he takes a nap." Tai says.
"How long has he been working for?" Ruby asks.
"Well from what I understand he has gotten 50 hours of sleep and over 180 hours of staying awake since your extradition from atlas." Weiss says.
"How do you know that?" Blake asks.
"Patty. She monitors his life signs." Weiss says back.
Everyone then nods in understanding.
Yang then went back to her room and she found Reese asleep on her bed with one blanket covering him and his head under a pillow. Yang then noticed that the armor was on the ground, Yang then got a small grin on her face.
Yang then grabbed the suit and went to the bathroom where the only full size mirror was located.
Yang then held it up to her body and was surprised that it looked like it would fit her and so with a wandering mind she put it against her body.
Zap!
Without warning it suddenly jumped from her hands and immediately adhered to her body and it started moving. Yang started to panic a little but Reese was a few feet away and it took a minute for the armor to form around the body.
Yang then got out from the bathroom and jogged to her room and found Reese still asleep.
Yang was going to be gentle to wake him up but given that the armor is covering half of her body she needed help now. So she flips the mattress.
WHUMP!
"Hey what the hell!" Reese says suddenly.
"Help!" Yang says.
Reese didn't move, instead he sat down and watched.
"Help me. What is it going to do to me?" Yang asks.
"He he well from the looks of it, the armor is going to add another user." Reese says.
"I don't want it." Yang says.
"Looks like it made up it's mind." Reese says as he sees the process is complete.
Yang then looks down to see that it's done form fitting to her body.
"Ah you need this." Reese says As he picks up the helmet and puts it on her.
When the helmet was on Yang it booted up and the hud displayed all the information she needed to know.
"I still don't want it." Yang says.
"That's rude." Patty says.
"Well it's not mine it's Reese's. So get it off Patty!" Yang half shouts.
Yang then removed the helmet and started to see the armor was coming off, but at that moment she forgot she was in her underwear.
"Ah! Don't look Reese." Yang says in a panic.
"Aw, are we a little shy now." Reese says mischievously.
"Not funny!" Yang says.
"Ah dark red, nice touch." Reese says with a wink.
"Get me something." Yang says.
Reese then gets up and grabs ruby's spare cloak he grabbed when he left beacon, and put it on over Yang.
Yang then grabbed the edges of the cloak and covered herself.
"What's wrong?" Reese asks with concern.
"I just don't want people to see me yet." Yang says.
"See what?" Reese says as he hugs Yang.
Yang then turns around and looks right into Reese's eyes.
"I'm pregnant." Yang says.
Now it was Reese's turn to be shocked.
"I'm going to be a father?" Reese asks.
Yang nods and Reese passes out on Yang's bed.
